Crack tip values: Von Mises stress = 526 MPa, S22 = 454MPa.
Von Mises stress is higher than S22 stress at crack tip.
Von Mises is the equivalent stress (i.e. having stress description from
all stress components) while S22 is stress in only direction-2 thats why
Von Mises stress is greater than S22.
Fig. 1.2 shows that we have stress singularity at crack tip and stress
decays as a function of 1/ distance as we move away from
crack tip.
Both curves coincide with each other and show almost same behaviour
away from the crack tip.
Discussion
Crack tip values: Von Mises stress = 439,44MPa, S22 = 393.55MPa.
In this case the Von Mises stresses are decreased from 526Mpa to
439Mpa and S22 from 454Mpa to 393.55Mpa and this decrease in
stresses is due to the addition of plasticity.
Plastic properties are responsible of material relaxation and dissipation
of elastic strain energy and due to this fact the stresses decreases at the
crack tip.
In fig. 2.2, it can be seen that we have stress singularity at crack tip
which decays as a function of 1/ distance as we move away
from crack tip.
In fig .2.2 both curves coincide with each other and show almost same
behaviour away from the crack tip.
Maximum equivalent plastic strain appears at crack tip which can be
seen in fig 2.3 and it becomes zero when move away from crack tip.
Question 03: Material with Plastic properties and different crack lengths
( a=0.1mm,a=0.2mm ,a=0.4mm)
Discussion
Crack tip Values:
Mises stress for crack length 0.4mm = 531.21 Mpa.
Mises stress for crack length 0.2mm = 439.44 Mpa.
Mises stress for crack length 0.1mm = 354.9 MPa.
This shows that longs cracks exhibits more severe stress singularity than
short cracks.
In fig. 3.1, it can be seen that we have stress singularity at crack tip which
decays as a function of 1/ distance as we move away from crack tip.
Crack tip Values:
S22 stress for crack length 0.4 mm = 479.22 Mpa.
S22 stress for crack length 0.2 mm = 393.55 Mpa.
S22 stress for crack length 0.1 mm = 315.63 MPa.
This also shows that longs cracks exhibits more severe stress singularity than
short cracks and Mises stress is greater than S22.
In fig. 3.2, it can be seen that we have stress singularity at crack tip which
decays as a function of 1/ distance as we move away from crack tip.
