AVE2-C-5000, 5 V/div
Avtech offers a unique line of tunable and fixed-tuned highpower solid-state VHF and UHF monocycle generators for
ultrasonic, SAW, radar (including ground penetrating radar),
TDR and network characterization applications. The frequency
tuning option, small size, and high output power permit many
novel applications. Units in the frequency range of 200 to 5000
MHz produce a single sinusoid output while units in the range
of 20 to 200 MHz produce a more rectangular doublet, as
shown in the photos above.
The AVD1 and AVD families are both fixed-tuned units for the
frequency range of 400 to 1500 MHz, but the AVD1 modules
are much smaller (1.1" x 1.3" x 2.3") than the AVD modules
(1.7" x 2.6" x 4.2"). The fixed-tuned AVE family operates in the
frequency range of 1500 to 3000 MHz. The AVE1 family
features octave tuning (via a one-turn control) in the frequency
range of 1000 to 3000 MHz while the new AVE2 family
provides fixed-tuned units in the frequency range of 3000 to
5000 MHz. Models AVA and AVB both operate in the frequency
range of 200 to 400 MHz but the AVA is tunable over the full
octave while the AVB is fixed-tuned. Frequency tuning of Model
AVA is accomplished by varying the length of a miniature
flexible coaxial cable between two SMA connectors. The AVC

family is also fixed-tuned and operates in the frequency range

of 20 to 200 MHz.
All models are designed for 50 operation. All units are
available in miniature module form (requiring +15 VDC prime
power), or in the bench-top instrument -C format. The modules
require a TTL input trigger.
The pulse repetition frequency of -C units is variable from 100
Hz to 1 MHz using the internal clock oscillator that is controlled
by a four-position range switch and a one-turn control (a 3 MHz
option is available for 1000 MHz and higher AVD units). A delay
control and a sync output are provided for sampling scope
triggering purposes. The units can also be triggered externally
using a TTL-level pulse. The propagation delay in the
externally triggered mode is typically 50 ns. A DC offset or bias
insertion option is available with most units. Units with this
option include a circuit similar to Model AVX-T (see
http://www.avtechpulse.com/bias/avx-t) at the output. The
required DC offset or bias is applied directly to rear-panel
solder terminals. Models with the -C suffix require 100-240V,
50-60 Hz prime power.
See the AVB1-C series for 50 and 100 Volt models and the
AVB2-C series for 400 and 800 Volt models.

1) -C suffix indicates stand-alone lab instrument with internal clock and line powering.
No suffix indicates miniature module requiring DC power and external trigger. (See
http://www.avtechpulse.com/formats for details of the basic instrument formats).
2) Specify required frequency (or T1).
3) The maximum PRF for AVD units above 1000 MHz can be extended to 3 MHz. To
specify this option add the suffix -F3 to the model number. The maximum output
amplitude at 1 - 3 MHz falls to 15 VPP.
4) For DC offset option suffix model number with -OS. Not available on AVE2 models.
Avtech Model AVX-T bias tee can also be used to obtain DC offset.

5) When ordering, specify the octave tuning range by adding a suffix consisting of the
lower and upper center frequencies, i.e. add suffix -1000-2000 to specify a 10002000 MHz tuning range, or -1500-3000 to specify a 1500-3000 MHz tuning range.
6) A 50 Ohm load is required. Other loads may damage the instrument. Consult Avtech
(info@avtechpulse.com) if you need to drive other load impedances.
7) For monitor option add suffix -M. Not available on AVE2 models.
8) For electronic control (0 to +10V) of the center frequency, suffix the model number
with -EF. Electronic control units also include the standard front panel one-turn
controls. Input impedance greater than 10 kilohms.
