Class: Backyard Beekeeping & Honey Extraction East Bay, Sunday April 11, 2010
9am-12:30pm: Honey bees are a joy to keep in the backyard simply for their buzzing presence
and, on hot days, the smell of honey, wafting through the air within ten feet of the hive. They
increase pollination in your yard and therefore increase your yields from fruit trees and
vegetables. You may also harvest honey (gallons per year), beeswax, pollen, and propolis from
the hive. We'll cover what you need to know to feel ready to have a Langstroth backyard beehive
-- how to get bees, what equipment you need, where to put the hive, how to extract honey and
upkeep the hive. There will be local honey to try. At the class break, we will take a short walk
over to a local beehive. Instructors: Jennifer Radtke and Margaret Farrow. 1:30pm-3:30pm: For
the afternoon honey extraction, we'll travel to a North Oakland backyard hive about a mile away
from the BioFuel Oasis and go into the hive briefly. Then, we'll learn how to uncap the honey
and spin the frames in an extractor. To enroll: send email with the subject name of the class you
would like to take, and your name and phone number. After emailing us, please click the "Pay
Now" button below the class description to reserve your spot in the class via credit card or debit
card. Location: BioFuel Oasis -- Ashby, 1441 Ashby Avenue, (@ Sacramento St.), Berkeley.
Time: 9am - 3:30pm. Cost: $30 w/o honey extraction, $50 with honey extraction. Info: 510-665-

Andrew Revkin In conversation with Healy Hamilton San Francisco, Tues. April 27, 2010
An award winning journalist for The New York Times, Andrew C. Revkin reports on the global
environment in print and on his New York Times online blog. Dot Earth focuses on the
projection that by 2050 or so, the world population is expected to reach nine billion people.
Those additional billions will be seeking food, water and other resources on a planet where,
scientists say, humans are already shaping climate and the web of life. Revkin examines efforts
to balance human affairs with the planet's limits. He has spent over 25 years covering
environmental and social subjects ranging from Hurricane Katrina and the Asian tsunami to the
assault on the Amazon and the troubled relationship of climate science and politics. Purchase
tickets online. Location: Herbst Theatre, War Memorial Performing Arts Center, 401 Van Ness
Ave, @ McAllister, San Francisco. Time: 8pm. Cost: $20. Info: 415-392-4400,

Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation: Program Associate, Andes Amazon Initiative
Palo Alto, CA
Established in September 2000, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation seeks to improve the
quality of life for future generations. The Foundation’s science-based, results-driven orientation
stems from the principles and interests of Gordon and Betty Moore. The Foundation operates
proactively in three specific areas of focus—environmental conservation, science, and the San
Francisco Bay Area—where a significant and measurable impact can be achieved. Distinct
Initiatives have been created within these three Program areas. An Initiative employs a portfolio
of grants that are expected to help achieve targeted, large-scale outcomes in a specific time
frame.
The Program Associate position will provide program and administrative support for the
Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation’s Andes Amazon Initiative. This position has a term limit
of four years. The Andes-Amazon is the world’s largest river basin and is the source of one-fifth
of Earth’s fresh water. It is also the most abundant wilderness on the planet, supporting the
world’s highest diversity of birds and concentration of primate diversity, one-third of all
freshwater fish species, and more than 60,000 plant species, half of which are endemic varieties
not found elsewhere. Today, nearly 20 percent of the intact forest in the Amazon Basin has been
lost to logging, cattle ranching, mining, agriculture, and infrastructure development. Current
statistics suggest that up to 9,000 square miles of forest are lost every year. A complete job
description can be found here. Last day to apply is May 29th.
