Product:

All BMC & VMX Series Machines With The 24-Station Swing Arm ATC

Issue Number:

Description:
To provide a comprehensive recovery procedure for the swing arm if it stalls during a tool change
cycle. Successful arm recovery requires an understanding of the operation of the ATC solenoid
valve stack (Figure 1) for correct sequence of motion. The proper sequence is as follows: Tool Pot
Down, Arm 60, Arm Down (and 180), Arm Up, Arm 0, and Tool Pot Up.

NOTE: In order to perform the following recovery procedures, the control must simply be set to
ESTOP for BMC series machines. VMX series machines have an ATC Air Relief valve, which
makes the air supply active to the transmission only when there is control power. To power up the
control, first set machine to ESTOP then press the MANUAL and POWER pushbuttons. Do Not
Press START.
If arm is in the UP position, at 60, and wont go down:
1) Press Arm 0 solenoid button to return arm to Home position and remove any tooling from
spindle and/or tool pot.
1) Ensure Z-axis is a correct tool change height (this can be verified in ATC/MACHINE
DIAGNOSTICS) and press Arm 60 solenoid button to move the arm toward spindle.
3) Press Arm Down solenoid button.
4) Press the Arm 0 solenoid button. The arm should start to turn then drop rapidly and rotate
180. Caution: Stay clear of the arm personal injury can result.
If arm is in the DOWN position, at 180, and wont go up:
2) Remove any tooling from spindle and/or tool pot as well as any tooling in the swing arm.
(To remove tooling from the swing arm, press its release pin down, which releases the lock
on the thumb).
3) Ensure Z-axis is at tool change height (this can be verified in ATC/MACHINE
DIAGNOSTICS).
4) Press Arm 60 solenoid button.
5) Press Arm Up solenoid button.
6) Remove air supply and pull supply line to transmission assembly from the air fitting at top of
the ATC unit.
7) Manually rotate arm until it can be pushed to the UP position. Rotate arm slightly in the UP
position so that it does not drop back down.
8) Reconnect airline to fitting at top of ATC unit and then turn air supply back on. Caution:
Stay clear of the arm personal injury can result. Once air is supplied to transmission the
arm will swing to the 60 position and stay UP.
9) Follow procedure for recovering arm that wont go down listed above.
