Assessments could capture the moment for adult learners by providing an overall picture of learning abilities, opportunities to take a closer look at the learning skills, and areas needed for additional intervention. According to instructor Teresa Spanella in the article The Importance of assessment in Education (2015), assessments in education are referenced as showing importance in the learning process and gives an overview if learning objectives have been met in the classroom (para. 2-4). These broad outlooks on the learning process could provide important tips of additional information needed to achieve improved learning and classroom success. When answering the question, why use assessments? different perspectives should be taken into consideration. These perspectives could vary from students thriving to learn content, teachers gaining feedback for ongoing instruction, schools and educational departments catering to faculty needs, and organizations gearing to gather data. Although perspectives could vary from person-to-person in the classroom, assessments are important for the following reasons: Reveal ranges of scores for high and low levels of learning, gain feedback periodically through the learning process, and to show where areas of need are for learners to gain improvement and/or review content. Spanella also references assessments as high motivators in the classroom allowing for moments of harder work from learners (2015, para. 7). If assessments are utilized consistently in the learning process, students could be encouraged to work towards improved learning outcomes. Student retention rates could also be disclosed when using assessments. For instance, a study from the Association of Talent Development (ATD) by Karl M. Kapp (2015) revealed that adding frequent tests during online learning results in higher retention rates. Kapp studied research to show that dispersing shorter tests promoted overall retention (para. 2-6).
