Unit 3: Research Questions

1.The two main forms of research undertake in the media industries is primary and
secondary research.
Primary Research being research you go out and find out for yourself and do yourself, a
prime example of this would be creating a questionnaire to find out who your target
audience is for a project you are working on.
Secondary Research is research in which has already been discovered already, this
could be extracting information from other websites about the topic of your subject and
how it can back up what you're doing.

2.
A/B
NRS ( New Revenue Solutions ): NRS Media is the global leader in helping media
companies achieve increased short and long term revenue and market share.
( nrsmedia.com/ )
ABC: ABC (Audit Bureau of Circulation), the industry body for media measurement.

We inspire market confidence by delivering a valued stamp of trust across the media
world. Our data is used by a wide range of decision makers.
BARB: Broadcasters Audience Research Board (BARB), have been delivering the
official viewing figures for UK television audiences. We commission research companies
Ipsos MORI, Kantar Media and RSMB to collect data that represent the viewing
behaviour of the UKs 26 million TV households.
RAJAR: RAJAR stands for Radio Joint Audience Research and is the official body in
charge of measuring radio audiences in the UK. It is jointly owned by the BBC and the
Radiocentre on behalf of the commercial sector. About Joint Industry Currencies. The
Joint Industry Currencies are unique. ( www.rajar.co.uk/ )
3. Media audience can be segmented in different ways for example SOC ( social class ) meaning
how high they are in the social class whether it's high class being rich or working class and you can
also segment them into age groups from elderly people to younger people like teenagers and kids.
C.A.R.G.E.L also segments people in how it's said the C stands for class; the A stands for age; R
stands for race, G stands for gender; E stands for education and L stands for lifestyle.

4. In the media industry, advertising is important because without advertisement you would not be
able to sell your end product which means no income for the team who made the product plus

advertising gets your product out their to the public ready to sell and earn money off it if people like
it, this includes advertisements, posters, podcasts, etc.
5. A researcher is someone within the media team who researches about a certain topics along with
certain expects behind it, this includes things like what the topic is about or is the topic possible to do
and make reality. They examine everything behind a product including its possibility to make, what
will need to be done to make it, costs, etc before bring it to the whole team and deciding whether to
go ahead with it. The role of a researcher is to also contact potential guests for certain types of
shows who can help with the show or topic, they are also responsible for most of the pre production
process like the location recce, risk assessment, release agreements, background information etc.
So its important to prepare well and do all the pre-production work and have GANTT charts and
recce sheets.
6. Another important purpose of production research is to demonstrate that I have planned my
product correctly so that it is viable, a few examples of my work to explain off that:
A Gantt Chart is a chart that I had made during the production of my World Of Warcraft
advertisement, I used this to help me keep track of what I need to do and what has been done
overall to make make my production a success which It was in the end.
Another would be a Actor release, this document was made by me and sent out to actors that I
wanted in my advertisement this is basically a legal agreement between the producer which was me
and the hired actors who starred in my advertisment.
Last example could be the Budget, this was a document made by myself to preview what I was
going to spend my money on and to make sure that I did not go over budget, and to see if It did go
over budget If i needed to reconsider anything,
7. SWOT analysis is a study undertaken by an organization to identify its internal strengths and

weaknesses, as well as its external opportunities and threats,

for example the ones you can see below are the strengths,
weaknesses, opportunities and threats within the TV advert I
had done.
Strengths
Weaknesses
Opportunities
Threats

8. Copyright is a term in which put on a product to mark that is that persons original work and
that it belongs to them, people copyright things in the media industry to not have their material
stolen by someone else that the work doesnt belong to.

Copyright on Youtube
The are key guidelines surrounding Youtube and Copyright. Youtube has the right to
take down videos that you have uploaded if it breaches copyright laws.
Your video can still be taken down even if you give credit to the owner, even if you do
not monetise your video, purchased the content yourself from Itunes, have recorded
the content yourself - for example recording your TV.
Youtube by law has to take the a video down if it is an infringement of copyright laws
however Youtube cannot determine copyright ownership. Youtube will receive a
complaint or a DMCA takedown notice from a rightsholder, where it will then remove
the video. If you are found to have used copyrighted material you will receive a
copyright strike on your account and you will have to take a session in its online
copyright school. If you continue to use copyrighted material and receive 3 strikes
on your account Youtube has the right to remove all accounts that you are associated
with. Your videos will also be removed and you will not be allowed to come back and
create a new account.
Privacy is different to copyright on Youtube. If you appear in a Youtube video it does
not mean that you own copyrights to it. However ever if you appear in a video
without your permission and you feel as though it invades your privacy or safety you
can put forward a privacy complaint.
Intellectual property - Intellectual property refers to the creation of work such as

inventions, literary work, artistic work - designs/patterns, names. And along with
trademarks, patents and copyrights it allows people to get recognition or even
financial benefit from their work. While patents protects inventions.
Trademark - A trademark is a recognizable sign, design or expression which
distinguishes products or services of a particular trader from the similar products or
services of other traders. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellectual_property#Trademarks
For example Youtube have trademarked logos, however Youtube's API - Application
Programming Interface allows you to incorporate Youtubes logos into your application
or device, meaning that you can use Youtube-logoed branding on your own website
and applications as long as the logo used within an application links back to Youtube
content or some form/area of Youtube.
If you want to use a youtube logo you can download these from the Youtube brand
site. There are also guidelines on the colouring, sizing as well as placement.
Furthermore youtube also states that you must not shorten or abbreviate its name
anywhere within your application.

Q1 Explain the four main methods of research

2. When designing my own survey, i consider many aspects like what audience i want to put out
the survey to and what i want to ask my target audience I also have to make sure my questions
relate to the topic i am working towards, I also have to consider what types of questions i want
to ask whether it be a multiple answer question or a long detailed one.

3.

4. Issues i would need to consider when doing secondary research is to mainly make sure that I
am not just plagiarizing the work and that if i am using a quote to use quotation marks and to
link the source in which i got the answer from.

1 The key areas of a presentation depends on the topic, however if you're selling a product and
making a presentation for it you would wanna include slides which then include your primary
research, secondary research, budget, your idea etc and then to overall explain and go in depth
into your idea for the person / group you're presenting to.
2. Explain fully what the following terms mean
a) Intrapersonal communication is a communicator's internal use of language or thought. It
can be useful to envision intrapersonal communication occurring in the mind of the individual in a

model which contains a sender, receiver, and feedback loop. This can occur between multiple
people, for example in the fashion show there was a spokesman who had repeated some of the
situation the teachers have given us like the roles people have or where the camera are placed
and so the spokesman repeats this and presented it to us and we talked over it.
b) Interpersonal communication is an exchange of information between two or more people.
It is also an area of study. Communication skills are developed and may be enhanced or
improved with increased knowledge and practice. During interpersonal communication, there is
message sending and message receiving.
c) NVC - It's well known that good communication is the foundation of any successful
relationship, be it personal or professional. It's important to recognize, though, that it's our
nonverbal communicationour facial expressions, gestures, eye contact, posture, and tone of
voicethat speak the loudest. For example when we presented our TV advert proposal to the
teachers, I went in and presented my proposal however I didnt just use my vocals I had also
used my gesture, keeping eye contact with my teacher, keeping my posture up etc and I feel this
gave me a higher grade overall and allowed my proposal to go through.
d) Paralanguage: The non-lexical component of communication by speech, for example
intonation, pitch and speed of speaking, hesitation noises, gesture, and facial expression, again
another example we can use is my TV advert proposal presentation which i had given with this
keeping my speed of speaking at a normal pace not too fast or slow as it would of given the
illusion i didnt know what i was talking about, also using my pitch of voice to emphasize certain
parts of my presentation.
e) Visual Aids: An item of illustrative matter, such as a film, slide, or model, designed to
supplement written or spoken information so that it can be understood more easily using the
same example of my TV advert we can take the part where I show the Sales and for this instead
of putting the increase of sales from last year, I would of just written sales have increased this
saves having to do a long and complicated statement about the sales and I had that title along
with a graph which showed it easily instead of me wasting my voice.

3. I Feel to make your presentation as smooth as possible you would want to really go in depth
in each slide, and to really present your idea to the audience also to add statistics as it may give
a clear understanding to the audience you're presenting to. Plus to explain your final idea in a
way that your audience would understand give an example of their point of view and how your
product would help / entertain them.
