Las Posadas

ur posadas traditions have always been

Christian and joyful, and their Christianity is
precisely the source of their joyful characteristics.
We celebrate posadas full of deep joy, because
the mystery of the coming of our Savior is being
renewed. And this joy is manifested in a way that
is full of deep faith, because the God-With-Us who
was promised in the Old Testament desired to
come as a child, as a new little brother for all
humanity.
In these pages we offer a very practical way to
keep our posadas full of spirit and, in that way,
full of true joyfulness.
Las Posadas is the Novena of spiritual
preparation for Christmas. The Rosary is prayed
and the litany is sung or prayed, while walking in
procession and bearing the images of Joseph and
Mary, or following two people who lead the
procession, dressed as Joseph and Mary.

We present for each posada two brief

readings that renew us in our own Christian belief
about this Christmas season and a community
prayer that will help us to feel more at home with
God. Afterwards we ask for Posada, singing the
verses in three different places.

diferentes.

The posadas draw us nearer to God. Joseph,

Mary and Jesus incarnated in the womb of Mary
were also migrants. We identify with them,
because in some way every one of us are pilgrims.

Las posadas nos acerquen ms a Dios. Jos,

nosotros somos peregrinos.

PRIMER DA

Old Testament: (Jeremiah 23:5-6)

LORD, When I will raise up for David a
righteous Branch; And He will reign as king and

Antiguo Testamento: (Jeremas 23, 5-6)

New Testament: (Luke 1: 26-31)

Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent
from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth, to a
virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph,
of the descendants of David; and the virgin's name
was Mary. And coming in, he said to her,
Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you."
But she was very perplexed at this statement, and
kept pondering what kind of salutation this was.
The angel said to her, " Do not be afraid, Mary; for
you have found favor with God. And behold, you
will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and
you shall name Him Jesus.

Nuevo Testamento: (Lucas 1, 26-31)

preguntaba qu querra decir semejante saludo.

await the coming of the Messiah.

SEGUNDO DA

Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, and a

branch from his roots will bear fruit. The Spirit of the
LORD will rest on Him, the spirit of wisdom and
understanding, the spirit of counsel and strength, the
spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. And He
will delight in the fear of the LORD, and He will not
judge by what His eyes see, nor make a decision by
what His ears hear; but with righteousness He will
judge the poor, and decide with fairness for the
(
afflicted of the earth; and He will strike the earth with
the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips He
will slay the wicked. Also righteousness will be the belt
about His loins, and faithfulness the belt about His
waist.

Antiguo Testamento: (Isaas 11, 1-5)

impo. Ser la justicia su ceidor, la fidelidad
apretar su cintura.

New Testament: (Luke 1, 31, 34-38)

The angel said to Mary: And behold, you will
conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you
shall name Him Jesus. Mary said to the angel,

Nuevo Testamento: (Lucas 1, 31, 34-38)

"How can this be, since I am a virgin?" The angel

answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will
come upon you, and the power of the Most High
will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy
Child shall be called the Son of God. And behold,
even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a
son in her old age; and she who was called barren
is now in her sixth month. For nothing will be
impossible with God." And Mary said, "Behold,
the bond slave of the Lord; may it be done to me
according to your word." And the angel departed
from her.

Ahaz said, "I will not ask, nor will I test the
LORD!" Then he said, "Listen now, O house of
David! Is it too slight a thing for you to try the
patience of men, that you will try the patience of
my God as well? "Therefore the Lord Himself will
give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child
and bear a son, and she will call His name
Immanuel.
New Testament: (Matthew 1: 18-21)
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows:
when His mother Mary had been betrothed to
Joseph, before they came together she was found
to be with child by the Holy Spirit. And Joseph her
husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to
disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly.
But when he had considered this, behold, an angel
of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying,
"Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take
Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been
conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit."She will
bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for
He will save His people from their sins."

quieren cansar tambin a mi Dios?

blessed is the fruit of your womb! and how has it
happened to me, that the mother of my Lord would

Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the
city of David which is called Bethlehem, because
he was of the house and family of David, in order
to register along with Mary, who was engaged to
him, and was with child. While they were there,

barren heights, and springs within the valleys. I
will turn the desert into pools of water, and the
parched ground into springs.
New Testament: (Luke 2: 15-16)
When the angels had left them and gone into

Antiguo Testamento: (Isaas 41, 17-18)

quien ustedes desean. Miren: Ya va entrando, dice
el Seor de los ejrcitos.

New Testament: (John 1, 6-7, 9-12, 14)

There came a man who was sent from God; his
name was John. He came as a witness to testify
concerning that light, so that through him all men
might believe. The true light that gives light to
every man was coming into the world. He was in
the world, and though the world was made through
him, the world did not recognize him. He came to
that which was his own, but his own did not
receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those
who believed in his name, he gave the right to
become children of God. The Word became flesh
and made his dwelling among us.

Nuevo Testamento: (Juan 1, 6-7, 9-12, 14)

Vino a

NINTH DAY

NOVENO DA

Old Testament: (Isaiah 40: 3-5)

A voice of one calling: "In the desert prepare the
way for the LORD make straight in the wilderness
a highway for our God. Every valley shall be
raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the
rough ground shall become level, the rugged
places a plain. And the glory of the LORD will be
revealed, and all mankind together will see it. For
the mouth of the LORD has spoken."

Antiguo Testamento: (Isaas 40, 3-5)

vern. As ha hablado la boca del Seor.

New Testament: (Hebrews 1: 1-4)

In the past God spoke to our forefathers through
the prophets at many times and in various ways,
but in these last days he has spoken to us by his
Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and
through whom he made the universe. The Son is
the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his
powerful word. After he had provided purification
for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the
Majesty in heaven. So he became as much superior
to the angels as the name he has inherited is
superior to theirs.

Nuevo Testamento: (Hebreos 1, 1-4)
