Alkalinity of
Common Liquids
The pH scale is a special scale used
to tell if a substance is acid,
alkaline (base) or neutral.
Scientists use indicators to
determine the pH of a substance.
One common indicator is litmus. Litmus indicator turns red in acids
and blue in alkalis (bases).
In this activity, you will use litmus to find out about some common
drinks you might like.
Instructions:
1)Test each liquid listed below with both red and blue litmus paper.
2)Dip the paper quickly into cup.
3)Record the color of the wet section. Use only the words red or
blue.
4)Complete the last column to say if the liquid is an acid, alkali (base)
or neutral.
