Recent Prior Experience (specific relevant concepts, skills and values the school students have experienced prior to this lesson):
They are now to complete this practical class with the knowledge from their theory class with an addition of a demonstration given in the beginning.
Syllabus Outcome(s):
One or two only. Please note the syllabus
Reference number AND write out in full.

By the end of this lesson, the students will:
Identify timber butt joint
Complete a butt joint

-Observe students creating a butt joint

- Students must use all tools in a safe
manner.
- No testing, just recognition and
understanding and use of hand tools

selects and uses appropriate materials

for specific applications.

Any safety issues to be considered:

Ensure that students have only 4 per table

Timing (mins)

INTRODUCTION
Teacher to mark attendance
Introduction of the Butt joint

Resources and Organisation:

T Marks roll using call and response method.

5

The teacher will question the class to ensure they

understand last lessons theory:

T will then praise behavior, which is steady.

T then begins with questioning the students to refresh their
memory from the last theory lesson, then they proceed with a
demonstration of the Butt joining methods.

Q/ what are some of the safety requirements needed

when making butt joint?
A/ Safety glasses, apron and earplugs if working near
power tools.

- Tools:
Demonstration of Butt joints and completed sample

The T advises Ss to ask questions in regards to the

demonstration focusing on components and safe operating
procedures.

Q/ why are butt joints used when constructing

corner joints?
A/ They are very quick and easy to make but are not
very strong.
The T begins with a short demonstration of Butt
joint. Passing a completed joint around the class for
Ss to have a closer look at.

Teaching Strategies / Learning Experiences:

(How it is taught) Write detailed steps showing what the
teacher (T) will do and what students (Ss) will do.

T will asks students to step back to their tables where they each
have their allocated pieces of timber, and ask Ss to begin.
Commented [LF1]: Class discussion

Any questions from Ss, hands are raised.

5

Commented [LF2]: Demonstration to whole class of

lesson skill set

Ss will watch and can ask questions in regards to

Butt joints and safe operating procedures.

DEVELOPMENT
Explain the importance of timber joints.
Each Ss is to be standing at their tables with their
pieces of timber.
Ss to begin creating their butt joint on their allocated
timber.
The T is to walk around and talk to each table asking
if they need help in the process.

The whole
time

30

T is to allow Ss to help one another within their table groups but

also to ask questions
Ss must not complete the other Ss work, they must only provide
verbal help and demonstrations through their own work and
ideas.

- Tools:
sample Butt joint

Commented [LF3]: Students working in table groups on

assigned task for the lesson
Commented [LF5]: Students who have grasped the task
better help the other students within their table group

T will circulate around the class and talk to students

about the importance of using glue as well as nails
when creating butt joints
Q/Why are butt joints used and why arent they very
strong?
A/ Butt joints are used because they are very quick
to construct, but they arent very strong because
there are no interlocking pieces besides the nails and
glue if used.

T must continually be aware of safety and Ss behavior in the

classroom whilst table group work is taking place.
Commented [LF4]: Teacher circulates around the class
helping students that have problems with the class task
and also questioning students who have a greater grasp
on the task with more in depth questions

The T must ensure and remind Ss to stay on task.

CLOSURE
T to start a class conversation about the pros and
cons of using butt joints

Commented [LF6]: Whole class conversation started to

combine class as a group again

T to ask students conclusion questions.

Q/ Why did the class use butt joints on their project?
A/Butt joints are quicker and easy to make and the
class project doesnt need to have a very structurally
strong joint

T will then praise behavior, which is steady.

Q/ What forms of safety equipment must be worn

while creating Butt joint? (revision of earlier
question to ensure students have a good
understanding of the importance of PPE)
A/ Safety glasses, apron, earplugs if working near
power tools.
The T asks Ss to pack up all equipment and return
sample pieces of timber back to allocated storage
areas.

- Tools:
Students timber pieces, sample butt joint.

Commented [LF7]: Lesson summary questions asked to

ensure all students have grasped the lessons content and
to gauge whether content will need to be re visited next
lesson

The teacher must check that all equipment is back to

ensure the safety of the students inside the class and
outside.
