Budget Assignment
Proposed Three-Year Budget for 2016-2019
Goshen Elementary School is a suburban community school consisting of
approximately 450-500 students. The media center receives a budget of approximately
$5,000 annually. The district currently provides access to several databases that
provide E-books, as well as periodicals for research.
The school is starting its first year as a STEAM School in 2016-2017. The media
center will support the new STEAM initiative through the acquisition of STEAM related
resources linked to Common Core standards. This will include not only print resources
for both teachers and students, but also technology resources. Before designing the
budget, the media committee requested feedback from teachers, students, and other
community stakeholders as to what resources they felt were most needed to
successfully achieve the learning goals. The media center is committed to providing
students and teachers with the resources necessary to increase student achievement.
The media center will strive to promote literacy and 21st century skills so that students
will be college and career ready.

Justification for Materials

Books:
With the initiation of the new STEAM curriculum, teachers have asked for more
books and print materials on STEAM related content to coincide with the Common Core
and Georgia Performance Standards. Our goal is to have STEAM books to support
content, as well as other STEAM related books on topics of student interest for
recreational reading. The media center will also continue to provide current popular
fiction titles, as well as Georgia Book Award nominated books. Books will also be
purchased on varying Lexile levels where the current collection is lacking.
Periodicals:
Subscriptions will be purchased for research materials and pleasure reading.
Only those periodicals which are not available through online databases will be
purchased in print. Periodicals will be selected based on survey results of teacher
curriculum needs and student interest.
AV Materials:
The current video collection is extremely lacking and outdated. Teachers have
expressed a need for videos to support the current standards, especially in the areas of
science, social studies, health, and literature. The special education department has
also requested books on CD of required novels to meet the needs of some of their
students.
Software:
To support the STEAM initiative, software utilizing engineering skills will be
purchased to be used in conjunction with STEAM lessons and the maker space.
Desktop Computers:
Our school is one of the technology poor schools in the district. The media
center currently only has three desktop computers for student use. With becoming a
STEAM school, it is important to have the technology resources within the library to

support students and teachers adequately with research and projects. Students will
need access to computers for drafting and engineering prior to creating in the maker
space. The current computer designated for video production is outdated and not
capable of running the required programs, therefore needing to be replaced.
Headphones:
Students are in desperate need of headphones for the computer lab. The current
program being used in the district for benchmarking and student progress monitoring in
reading and math requires the use of headphones to complete the assessments and
modules. This program is required for all students.
Maker Space:
To support the STEAM curriculum and provide a 21 st century learning
environment for students in the media center, a maker space will be created. The
maker space will begin with basic creating materials such as Legos, various craft
materials, etc. The complexity of materials will increase as students and teachers
become more comfortable with the maker space, and will eventually incorporate mother
boards, robotics, and a 3D printer.
