Module 5 - Essential Question & Inquiry-Based Lesson Plan

Template
Human Impacts on Ecosystems

Grade Level/Subject

7th Grade Science

Overview of Lesson

Students will be researching the negative human impacts that

are affecting various ecosystems around the world. They will
create a Glogster to promote awareness for one particular
human action and investigate possible solutions.

Web Address for

Activity Information

Students will use the website created for the project at:
http://frostnscience.weebly.com

(Where can students find

guidance for inquiry
activity? This would be
Blog, Google docs, WIKI ,
WebQuest, URL)

Essential Questions
(What are the
essential/main question/s
that students will be
answering in this
activity?)

Suggested
Foundation/Subsidiar
y Questions

Examine how human activities are impacting ecosystems.

Formulate solutions to protecting ecosystems and biodiversity
of life.

What human activities affect land ecosystems?

What human activities affect water quality and quantity?
What is biodiversity?

(What are some guided

questions that should be
answered to help with
answering essential
question?)

Content Standards
Addressed

LIFE SCIENCE (LS)

Topic: Cycles of Matter and Flow of Energy
This topic focuses on the impact of matter and energy transfer
within the biotic component of ecosystems.
Content Standard: In any particular biome, the number,
growth and survival of organisms and populations
depend on biotic and abiotic factors.

The Final Product

What will students

1. Before the beginning of the project, students will need

background information about the negative impacts that
humans have on ecosystems.
2. Students will have the task of promoting awareness
about one of these negative human impacts through a
visual presentation.
3. Using Chromebooks they will visit the designated
webpage (provided) that includes a step-by-step
procedural outline, resources to find information, and a
rubric.
4. Allow students time to research through the resources to
choose which impact they would like to further explore.
Remind students that if it is not on the list they need to
have it approved.
5. Once they have decided they need to answer these
questions:
Explain the negative human action. Basically, what
is it?
Why is this action happening? What is causing it?
What type(s) of ecosystems is/are being impacted?
What part of the world is being impacted the most?
Name two organisms being affected and the impact
it has on them.
6. Student should use the resources provided to them from
the webpage.
7. When they have gathered all their information, students
will create a Glogster to present their findings. Make
sure students include 3-4 appropriate graphics to
illustrate their topic. Also, students must have 3
possible solutions or actions that can help prevent these
negative actions.

Procedure
How will student work be
assessed?

The Glogsters will be assessed using the rubric found on the

last page. They will be assessed on attractiveness, accuracy,
solutions, and use of class time.

Reflection

What problems do you anticipate with this lesson?

How will this lesson fit into your overall curriculum planning?
I anticipate the following problems: time constraints, difficulties
for students to pull out important information from the resources
given, and technical issues in creating the Glogster itself. Unless
the students are familiar with using Glogster I believe it may be
a challenge at first until they are used to the tools and formats of
using Glogster.
This lesson will actually fit into my overall curriculum planning
extremely well. This guided inquiry lesson will give students an
opportunity to further investigate one particular human impact
on an ecosystem and learn much more about it. Also, it will give
students a chance to share their findings with each other. We
typically cover this information but do not go into great depth;
this will give our class a chance to find relevant and meaningful
information and solutions of what they can actually do on a dayto-day basis. Students will learn that even the smallest action
can have an impact on the world.
