1.

Understand anatomy and physiology in relation to moving and positioning

individuals

1.2

Describe the impact of specific conditions on the correct movement and

positioning of an individual
There are some conditions like arthritis, Parkinson, cerebral palsy, amputation or
stroke which need a special attention when moving and handling an individual
suffering of any of them. Thats because patients suffering of them could have
sensitive areas which can become more painfully without a gentle moving and
handling. Also patients suffering of Parkinson need more time than other
patients because the moves are slower and rushing them will definitely result in
a fall or will discourage them form keep moving.
It is very important for care staff to be familiar with the medical history of the
residents in order to be able to offer a good support to them and also
communication is very important. Even someone who does not have any of the
above mentioned conditions can have a day when he/she feels more stiff than
usually or in pain and we have to make sure that we assist them in a way which
is not aggravating the condition/problem.

2.

Understand legislation and agreed ways of working when moving and

positioning individuals

2.1.

Describe how legislation and agreed ways of working affect working

practices related to moving and positioning individuals
According to Nolan (2011), the statistics regarding the accidents in the care
settings show that more than half of the accidents happen during the moving and
handling process. In order to reduce the risk of accidents and to keep safe both
patients and workers, legislation for safe moving and handling has been
developed. The Moving and Handling Regulations (last updated in 2002) impose
duties for both employer and employee which are meant to be respected for
everybodys safety. On one hand, the employers duty is to ensure a safe
environment, properly checked equipment and trained staff for all moving and
handling operations and is the employees duty to respect the individuals care
plan moving and handling requests and the general moving and handling
principles at every moving and handling manoeuvre.
There is no moving and handling manoeuvre which can be 100% safe, but by
respecting the legislation the risks are considerably reduced.
