Big success at US trade show AHR Expo in Anaheim:
ASHRAE, the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Engineers, has singled
out and honoured the energy-saving giants from
ebm-papst in Mulngen (Germany) with an award
for the most innovative product in the field of
ventilation.
ASHRAE president Richard Rooley presented the
ASHRAE Award to ebm-papst Inc. product manager Armin Hauer during the AHR Expo in Anaheim,
California. This largest and most important US
trade show for heating, refrigeration and air-conditioning attracted about 50,000 visitors from
this industry who came to see what kind of products the 1,800 exhibitors from 26 countries
had to offer.
For Michael Bauer, EC business segment manager at ebm-papst Mulngen, this award just testifies to the fact that EC technology will turn out
to be the technology of the future even in big sizes.
With the award, the top-notch ASHRAE jury honoured an excellent and outstanding piece of development accomplished by ebm-papst engineers. The
world market leader in motors and fans has come
up with EC motors that use up to 30 percent less
energy than conventional motors. This is the reason
the EC motors are called energy-saving giants
and marketed as EC Giants in the English-speaking
world. Launched in 2003, these products make a
substantial contribution to environmental care not
only because they have markedly higher efficiency, but also because they generate a lot less noise
than conventional motors. Another decisive advantage: the quiet giants come with their electronic control already integrated.
With EC motors and EC fans, the AC current from
the mains is converted into DC via special electronics. Compared to other EC products, the ebm-papst
energy-saving giants offer higher efficiencies,
generate less noise, have integrated electro nics and
come in impressive sizes!
As for price, the energy-saving giants are comparable with conventional AC systems.
The energy-saving giants are used as axial
fans (impeller diameter 710, 800, 910 and 990
mm) in refrigeration, with condensers, water
chillers, dry coolers and evaporators. As centrifugal fans (impeller diameter 500 to 630 mm), they
are used in climate cabinets, air conditioning
room units, and industrial extraction hoods as
well as in rooftop fans.
For Gerhard Sturm, founding ebm-papst President and C.E.O., the energy-saving giants help
to keep jobs in Germany: With this new technology, ebm-papst has managed once again to
take the technological lead over our global competitors.
The EC motor in size 55 newly developed by ebmpapst Mulngen is very quiet and perfectly and
optimally adapted to the various and diverse applications in building ventilation and air-conditioning,
in telecommunications and in refrigeration.
This revolutionary 3-core motor sets new standards in its class and size as noise and vibration
are hardly generated at all. This motor variant is
an economic replacement for the conventional
anti-vibration mounted solution with integrated
electronics established on the market so far.
Apart from its substantially higher efficiency compared to conventional AC motors and its signicantly lower generation of heat, this ebm-papst EC
motor offers comfortable and simple open and
closed loop control possibilities. The electronics
integrated in the motor can directly be connected
to the 230 V AC mains.
Moreover, the new fan types based on this motor
design can be installed in any mounting position
and thus open up a wide range of possible applications. According to the manufacturer, these fans
are available as of mid-2004.

Flat
sharp & beautiful
Everybody wants them some of us already use them
and most people do not know that ebm-papsts
latest EC technology is being used to make them.
Flat screen TV and computer screens or PDPs
(Plasma Display Panels), TFT (xxxxx), LCDs (liquid
crystal displays) and Projection TVs are what we
are talking about.
The worlds largest number of researchers, designers
and manufacturers of these technologies are located in South Korea. Companies like LG (Lucky Goldstar) or SAMSUNG were guided and supported by
the South Korean government several years ago to
become the global leaders for these products.
Huge investments for clean room facilities are necessary to manufacture i.e. at screen TVs of up to 72
in size.
Clean rooms with oor areas as large as forty football elds are being currently planned and constructed to cope with the global demand of more and
more at screens.
And more and more of these clean rooms are being
equipped with FFUs (fan lter units) that are being
driven with ebm-papsts EC-fans with integrated
electronic.
Immediately after final R&D of the upgraded ECGiants, lab tests and verifications a pilot project
was launched to prove the function in the field.
In the small town of Kolbermoor near Rosenheim
in Bavaria Gntner and ebm-papst Mulfingen
installed the first EC-Giants S3G800-BA02-03 in
a condenser application. For the first time three
800 mm EC-fans were used for closed loop headpressure control.
Closed loop sensor control will maintain a head
pressure of 12 bar with a proportional band of 3
bars independand of load and cooling requirements. The fan will start to turn at 12 bar head
pressure and will run design speed at 15 bar.
The set value and PID parameters are set via LISA
software.
One fan acts as master and two fans are set as
slaves.
