Focusing on Todays Rural Environment

A tasteful trade

14-year-old creates
business from 4-H project

AVON Rain puddles

are scattered along the fence
line, filling the plastic base
that covers the roots of tomato plants. As the sun peaks out
from beneath the heavy gray
clouds, Austin Maile walks
through his garden, checking
the plants and anticipating
when they will ripen.
At 10 years old, Austin,
now 14, began Austins Acres
a garden at his home near
Avon and a produce stand at
the local farmers markets.
It started as a 4-H project
with food preservation, Austin said. I was approached by
a fairgoer, asking if I sold any
of my foods.
On a two-acre plot, Austin tends to more than 350 tomato plants and 1,500 pepper
plants, as well as pumpkins
and other produce, with his
parents, Randy and Jodi.

His mother is a very patient woman with our little

business, said Randy, with a
grin.
Every Friday afternoon,
Austin and his father attend
the St. Josephs Farmers Market with their vehicle overflowing with canned goods
and fresh produce pasta
sauces, tomato soup, hot
pickles and barbecue sauce,
among much more.
He first sold herb jelly,
made with herbs grown in a
planter on our deck, Jodi
said.
After receiving encouragement from others and
shining reviews from customers, Austin delved into the art
of gardening, experimenting
with different varieties of
produce and food preservation recipes.
My 4-H project turned
into attending markets that
sold really well, so I decided
to expand, Austin said.

FARMING Bright flowers surround Barb Kohorst as she sits on her

patio north of Farming. The flowers
seem to dance with the breeze as the
sun adds a glow to everything it touches. Carefully tended gardens spread
across the lawn of Barb and her husband Dans property, but it is the nearest arrangement to the patio that seems
to steal the show.
Leos Garden is circled with rocks
and bursting with plants, flowers, wind
chimes and reminders of the son the
Kohorsts miss daily. It is a garden of
healing, celebration and remembrance,
bringing peace and faith as it grows.
Leo Kohorst was a quiet, gentle
spirit. His family remembers him as a
man of justice who welcomed everyone into his life and his heart with open
arms.
He didnt pass judgment, nor give
focus to our limitations, or worry about
labels that others put on us, Barb said

us anyway. Leo accepted everyone for
who they were.
In 2009 Leo and his family had
the opportunity to take a trip across
the United States and into Vancouver,

where Leos sister was living at the

time. Leo, a 2007 graduate of Albany
High School, was an adventurer and
an outdoorsman at heart and thrilled to
have the experience.

they saw and experienced in the 10 or
so days spent on the road, Barb said.
But it was with that experience that he
insisted we take time to see more of the
national parks.
The 2009 trip to Vancouver did not
allow enough extra time to see all the
national parks Leo wanted to show his
family.
Leo wanted to go south and visit
the parks in California and Utah, Barb
recalled. I promised him that before
his sister left Vancouver, we would
go back and take the south route so
he would be able to show us more of
Gods beautiful creation.
But the trip did not happen. In October 2010, Leo was violently attacked
by his roommate. The roommate was
later convicted of 1st degree murder
with life in prison and no chance for
parole.
In this tragedy, taken from us was

Christian, an exceptional musician, a
humanitarian, an idealist, a dreamer
and a young man who had an uncommon understanding of what is good,

Austins favorite tomato is the

Heirloom Oxheart, for its color and
shape.
In the first years of business, Austin focused his time and efforts on
growing plants for barbecue sauce
production, but he has since incorporated the use of hot peppers for steak
sauces and marinades.
People like spices and I thought
itd be fun, Austin said. I wanted
to go in a different direction, and its
worked really well.
Using cayenne, jalapeo, ghost
and Carolina Reaper peppers, Austin
concocts a variety of hot sauces and
barbecues.
The Carolina Reaper is the hottest pepper in the world, Austin said.
We have to wear gloves when han-

dling it when its ripe.

To date, his customers favorite is
the fermented jalapeo sauce.
This year, my favorite is the hot
sauce, too, Austin said. I put it on
burgers, chicken, whatever.
To prepare the produce for further
processing, Austin and Randy follow
a strict method; first beginning with
the peppers placed in a netted bag and
soaked in liquid, being fermented to
bring out the flavor.
Once we get the mixture kick
started, we can keep going, Randy
said.
Austin agreed.
The first batch takes about six
months resting in the liquid because
its fresh, he said. After that, we can
reuse the liquid and it doesnt take as

Then, the peppers are run through
a juicer to remove excess liquid. Other ingredients, such as onion powder,
are added, and then the sauce sits in a
boiling water bath for 15 minutes before being labeled and stored for the
markets.
Some recipes come from Grandma and some from Great-GreatGrandma. They have been handed
down the line, said Randy, who grew
up canning produce with his family.
Before finishing a batch, Austin and his father test the recipe with
pH meters to ensure the appropriate
amount of acidity is present.
Its quite the process, Austin
said. Some recipes are our own and
others we start with a known recipe
and then tweak it to make it our own.
Currently, the father-son duo is
fermenting a bag of jalapeos for vinegar.
We wanted to make jalapeo
pepper wine, but couldnt get an answer for how we can go about marketing it, Randy said. So we turned
it into vinegar.
Throughout this business journey,
Austin has learned how to can, make
bulk foods and tend to a garden; and
once the products are on display at
the farmers market, a feeling of accomplishment rushes over the teenage boy.
I honestly never thought it would
be this big, he said. I have a lot of
loyal customers.
Many farmers market attendees
will visit Austins stand every week,
purchasing sauces and then revisiting
the following week to return the jars.
Additionally, an Austins Acres Facebook page helps grow the customer
base.

what is true and what is just, Barb said with strength

behind her words. We really miss Leos quiet, gentle
presence. When you lose a child, there is a part of
your heart that goes with them.
Leo was known for his music, composed original
songs and could play just about any instrument. It was
a talent he shared with others spreading inspiration
and joy to those who met him.
God blessed us with Leo for 22 years, and we
will live out his memory until the day we are reunited, said Barb.
Leos death left his family with overwhelming
grief. However, through the tears came a sense of
healing and eventually the realization that they needed to follow through on the last promise that was
made.
It was very important for us to be able to take

that trip it was for Leo. We knew we needed to keep

that promise, said Barb.
Barb wrote of the experience, an excerpt is below:
We kept our promise to Leo and in August 2012,
we took the camper for three weeks and traveled
6,600 miles out west to visit the national parks that
Leo wanted to show us. We took rocks from our rock
pile and along the way we painted and wrote messages of Love for Leo on them. We each picked a
special national park where we left our rock in loving memory of him. We would pause and say special
prayers and poems about him.
How marvelous it was to wake up in Crater Lake,
Ore., to a view of the deepest lake in the world and
the blue color of the water was stunning. We headed
to Redwood where we drove through a large tree. The

took a nice hike to the hot springs. We kept driving to
Shasta-Trinity Forest and Plumas Forest where trees
were donated through Arbor Day Foundation in Leos
honor.
The journey continued to Yosemite, Death Valley, the Hoover Dam, Zion and more. All the places
Leo hoped to see with his family and in many ways,
he did.
We could feel him there with us, Barb said
with a smile. There have been a lot of ways we have
found healing but this trip was really something that
helped us.
As they traveled, the Kohorsts opened gifts that
had connections to Leo; they ate his favorite foods
and sang the songs he had written as they watched the
glow of campfires across the United States.
The painted rocks left for Leo each had a special
message for him with his passion for nature, it can
be assumed that he will find the rocks as he journeys
through Gods wondrous earth.
There is truth to the saying, in nature nothing
dies, Barb said. Being in the wilderness has a way
of making us feel connected to Leo. It has helped
us when the waves of grief become overwhelming.
Spending time in Gods beautiful creation has brought
us peace and serenity in the midst of our grief jour-

A respected tractor restorer

Vouk enjoys working

with old machines
By HERMAN LENSING
Staff Writer

ST. JOSEPH Gary Vouk has, by

his own description, a disease of sorts.
He likes restoring and repainting
machines.
I started at about 16 or 17. We
had an older John Deere B here. I
painted that. Then I restored a 1967
Impala and that kind of got me into
it, said Vouk, now age 45 years old.
Attention to detail, a love for
machines and a course or two at St.
Cloud Vo-Tech has helped Vouk become a respected restorer. He really
doesnt know the exact number of vehicles he has restored, but on the farm,
where he helps his brother, Brian, and
his parents, Don and Donna, there are
over 40 either restored or being restored tractors.
We use them at a small threshing festival we have in the fall, said
Vouk. They almost all work.
Restoring and repainting is more
than just putting a coat of paint on.
Every project he has worked on requires cleaning, fix up and rebuilding. He also found people have good
memories about what a finished product should look like.
Sometimes they will say the red
is too red or too orange, he said about
repainting International tractors. I
get the paints from the dealers so it is
the right color.
He sometimes goes to Auto Value
for off brands.
He has worked on a variety projects. The time it takes to rebuild, re-

Deere.
It was all red and green around
here, he said. I have painted almost everything excepted an Allis
Chalmers.
That list includes the Cockshutt, a red-orange and yellow Canadian-made tractor.
The Internet has been great for
getting parts and images of what
something looked like. Detailing
of the equipment has become easier with vinyl details.
Living on the farm started by his grandfather
Roy, Vouk and wife Kathy have a family connection to the land. The annual threshing project is a
continuation of threshing bee run by another family member near St. Stephen for a number of years.
Last year Gary and Brian introduce something special to the event.
He bought a Case steam engine, Gary said.
We rebuilt it and used it. Its not completely restored, but it runs.
It took about one year to rebuild the engine.
The brothers have set a deadline for themselves.
We had a 50th anniversary coming up and we
wanted it ready for that, said Gary. We had to put
new pipes on in the boiler.
The piece that really challenged him was the
cab for a Minneapolis Moline R. It was different
from other cabs and not made for most of the tractors.
They (the people who wanted it restored) said
it was industrial grade or had been used by railroads, he said. There were no pictures of that cab

anywhere.
Pictures would have been helpful as the
cabs condition alone made it a challenge. There
was not one spot that was not rusted or dented,
said Vouk. I had to build pieces for it.
His skills working with metal and welding paid
off in that and other projects.
The final project passed the customers approval.
Actually, Vouk has rarely had anyone who
doesnt appreciate his final product. There is one,
however, who always finds something not quite
right.
I dont like looking on my own work, he said.
I pick out stuff nobody else can see. I always see
things I could have done different.
Vouk is currently restoring a 1969 Charger and
1928 Chevy, with more tractors in the future.
Finding places to put them can be a problem,
he said. Collecting them gets to be like a disease
after a while.

Dee Dahlke and Wes Haglund are always on the lookout for unique items to decorate
their cabin on Lake Koronis near Paynesville.

Haglund, Dahlke
display yard sale
finds at the lake
By DIANE LEUKAM
Staff Writer
PAYNESVILLE Wes Haglund
loved the times he was able to spend at
family friends cabins as a boy. Those
times were rare because they were
farmers and it was hard to get away.
Then one year his dad had a chance
to buy a cabin next their friends for
$10,000 and the unthinkable happened: he didnt do it. From that time
on, Haglund always wished he could
own one himself.
He also never passed by a flea market or garage sale he didnt like. Not
out of a need for anything, but from a
natural curiosity, and a love of finding
something unique.
Then in 2009, he found a way to
meld the two interests when he happened by a small cabin for sale on Lake
Koronis in Paynesville. He wasted no
time purchasing it and he couldnt be
happier. All the cabin memorabilia
hed been collecting for years at those
garage sales and flea markets finally

had a home.
Beside him to enjoy this home is
a smiling Dee Dahlke, a partner who
loves lake life and unique objects
every bit as much as he does. Together, the two are always on the hunt for
items that catch their eye, and can help
give their home its eclectic, downhome, cabiny feel.
Wes spent a lot of time restoring
the cabin after he bought it, using his
skills at woodworking to make any
necessary repairs. He also restored
several pieces of antique furniture to
their former glory, including a large
wardrobe as well as a clawfoot table.
The decorating, though, is up to
Dee, who has an instinct for creating
vignettes from related items both inside and outside the home.
With a lake theme in mind, she
once framed a page from an old magazine that showed numerous womens swimsuits from the early 1900s.
Not long after that, the couple was at
a garage sale where they saw an old
woolen womens swimsuit. The elderly lady having the sale was not willing to sell it because it belonged to her
mother.
When we told her it would be displayed in our home, she sold it to us,
said Wes.

would buy it and not take care of it,

said Dee. She was relieved to sell it
when she knew it would be preserved.
Another display in the home features an antique mail sorting cabinet.
Wes pointed out burns in the wood,
where the postal workers used to set
their cigarettes while they sorted the
mail. Various pieces are displayed
within the cabinet of many cubbies.
When asked about how they dusted it
all, Dees answer was simple enough:
I dust when the Vikings are on. I like
to listen to the game while I do other
things; I cant sit still.
A large fish Wes caught on Lake
Minnewaska graces the living room
wall, complete with the lure he used
catching it, along with an old fishing
net.
Outside, Dolly keeps watch as
the lifeguard on duty. Decorating the
lakeshore of the cabin, Dolly is a mannequin dressed up in patriotic rega-

lia who sits on a lifeguard chair with

signs all around stating the rules of the
beach.
Off to the side of the yard is a
small garden with another unusual display. While at a flea market, Wes and
Dee came across a pedestal sink that
caught their eyes. Looking closer, it
had detailing that included pictures of
a fisherman on it. They took it home
and added other items including an old
outhouse door, turning the whole thing
into a conversation piece.
But lake life for them is not all
about collecting. Its about peace and
quiet and enjoying their surroundings.
While standing out on the dock, Wes
explains how one day when they were
out there, a bald eagle flew into a tree
just yards from the dock carrying a
fish.
It was so quiet you could hear the
crunching as he ate it, said Wes.
Not being avid swimmers, one of

their favorite things is to

take their pontoon out
onto the lake, often visiting the three islands visible from their cabin. One
island has hiking trails
which they enjoy, and
deer and other wildlife
as inhabitants. Another
has an eagles nest which
they occasionally bring
visitors to see.
At their cabin, Wes
and Dee water the flowers, mow and trim, feed
the birds and everything
else having a cabin entails.
Their goal, though, is
to not be busy. They love
to entertain, relaxing with
family and neighbors
and all the great people
theyve met on the lake, This arrangement causes visitors to take a second look.

we stay here, said Dee. We dont go As Wes put it, This place has paid

Reeds raise, sell quality

Angus beef cattle
By MISSY MUSSMAN
Staff Writer

BROOTEN When it
comes to raising quality Angus
beef cattle, the Reeds know a
thing or two.
Thats our focus, Jake
Reed said. We market high
value cattle here.
Jake Reed and his wife,
Dawnt, own and manage
275 registered Angus females
225 cow calf pairs and 50
replacement heifers, with his
parents, John and Joanne Reed
at Bar J Ranch LLC. near
Brooten. Jake and Dawnts
children, Tori, 14, Jamison, 11,
Ellie, 9, and Hudson, 5, help
out at the ranch as well.
The Reeds seasonally
breed their Angus females.
We usually A.I. the herd
between May 15 and the first
week of June, Reed said.
Then, we turn the bulls out
after to catch any cows that
didnt settle.
The Reeds focus on phenotypic traits like feet and
legs, small to moderate body
size and longevity.
We want structurally
sound and long lasting cattle
that will make our commercial

customers profitable, Reed

said. We breed for great cattle, not just numbers.
While the cows calve between Feb. 15 and April 15,
Bar J Ranch hosts their annual
Angus bull and female sale on
the farm in March. Their Angus cattle are sold to customers in Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota.
In addition to our Angus, we have one of the top
Lowline herds in the country,
Reed said. Our Lowline cattle
sell all over the United States
at consignment and production
sales at the ranch.
Although most of the cattle are sold during the sales,
cattle are also sold year-round.
We sell them privately,
too, Reed said. It just depends on what were up to at
the time.
Despite selling a lot of
females, the Reeds do keep
some heifers for replacements.
We keep the cows for as
long as theyre productive and
then replace them with a yearling heifers, Reed said.
With cows calving, the
sale and breeding the herd,
February through the first
week in June is hectic at Bar J
Ranch.

PHOTOS BY MISSY MUSSMAN

Jake Reed owns and manages 275 registered Angus females with his wife, Dawnt, and his parents,
John and Joanne Reed, at Bar J Ranch near Brooten.

Thats when our most

intense work happens, Reed
said.
During the grazing season, the cows are rotationally
grazed in groups of 40 to 50
cow calf pairs on over 1,000
acres of pasture.
We usually have the cows
out on pasture by May 20 and
theyre done in November depending on the pasture, Reed

said. We try to have them

graze eight months out of the
year.
Once the cows come home
from the summer pastures,
they graze on crop residues
and cover crops.
The Reeds own 450 acres
of pasture and lease another

We rotate the cows once
a week on these, Reed said.

those as the pastures we own
closer to the farm.
Those owned pastures are

seven acres in size.
We rotate the cows every couple
days, Reed said.
Once the cows are moved, the pasture they finished grazing is rested for
35 to 40 days before putting cattle back
on.
We give it enough time to come
back, Reed said.
The number of cows per paddock
depends on the size of the paddocks.
Most of or pastures have has 40
to 50 pairs on them, Reed said.
Water is available in each paddock
as well.
There are natural water ways in
many of our paddocks, Reed said.
We also run waterlines to many of
those paddocks, too.
With their cattle grazing during
the summer, spring and fall, the Reeds
have been working on reintroducing
warm season grasses in some of their
pastures. They have used fire and rotational grazing to help bring back those
native grasses and flowers.
In their cool season paddocks, the
Reeds inter-seeded legumes like clover
and birdsfoot trefoil.
The Reeds also use a pasture irrigating system.
But we only use it on 80 to 90
acres on the main farm, Reed said.
The rest is subject to the amount of
rain we get.
During the day, the Reeds spend
time checking all the pastures. They
feed mineral, check the cows and make
sure they are healthy, and rotate the
cows to a different pasture.
We also check and manage the
resting paddocks, and work to keep the
weeds under control, Reed said.
Although there are 1,000 acres of
land dedicated to pasture, the Reeds
also have 200 acres to grow corn and
hay for winter-feeding.
We dont sell cash crops, Reed
said. It all goes to the cows and

weaned calves.
Once the corn silage is harvested,
the Reeds try to plant a cover crop.
Thats been a big help for us,
Reed said. It allows us to stock pile
on forages. We graze the cover crops in
the fall, too.
During the winter, cows are fed
hay and corn silage, and housed outside with corn stalk bales used as wind
breaks.
The Reeds have been managing
Bar J Ranch for the past 40 years.
John moved to the area in the late
1970s after managing another beef
herd in South Dakota.
This was a large Angus farm, and
the owner was going out of business,
Reed said. My dad bought the land
and cattle from him in the early 1980s
and started the operation.
Originally, John and Joanne ran
Angus cows, and eventually expanded
into Lowlines in the mid-1990s.
Growing up on the farm, Reeds
love for beef farming grew.
I always liked the cattle, Reed
said. We built fence, checked pastures, helped work the cows, and
showed our cattle at shows across the
country. I always knew I wanted cattle
in my future.
By 2008, Reed and his family
moved back to the farm and started
working with his parents before forming a partnership in 2012.
I got my own herd going, too,
Reed said.
After coming back, Reed started
shifting the farms focus from mainly
selling Lowline cattle to registered Angus females and bulls, too.
We expanded the Angus operation. That was my focus, Reed said.
We went from selling about a dozen
Angus bulls to over 50. Im interested
in the genetics and following the pedigrees.
For the past eight years, Reed

worked as a full time sales specialist
with Purina.
It gets busy, but it works, Reed
said.
Looking ahead, Reed wants to
continue improving the herd and their
grazing set up.
We are constantly making chang-

es to do that, Reed said.

But seeing how far the farm has
come is something Reed is impressed
with.
Weve put in a lot of hard work
and dedication, and were still here,
Reed said. The fact that the ranch is
40 years old and still running is something to be proud of.

Bromenshenkel celebrated her 90th birthday party
out at the family farm southwest of Sauk Centre as an
open house event, the Bromenshenkel family decided to continue this celebration and make it an annual
get-together with immediate family.
Hildegard was born on June 15, 1922, and this
year turned 94 years old. Her children Gene, Dave,
Marilyn Uhlenkamp, Linda Clayton, Larry, and Tina
Hong, along with approximately 70 other family
members, attended the annual event the weekend of
June 25 in honor of her birthday.
This event is a chance for the Bromenshenkel
family to all see each other once a year.
Its a lot of work getting ready for it, but its
a lot of fun and everyone enjoys it, Dave Bromenshenkel said, who hosts the event with his wife, Irma.
Campers invade the family farm starting on Friday afternoon for a weekend of fun.
This year, the family was blessed with a 75-degree day despite a few weather delayed events.
Every year we have lucked out, and its been
beautiful weather. This year there was short rain
shower, but it didnt affect our weekend, Laura
Bromenshenkel, daughter of Dave and Irma,
said.

tents were popped up into place. At 6 p.m. they had a

pizza party where everyone chipped in a few dollars.
Afterwards, the family was entertained by watching
the kids fly their kites.
At 9 a.m. on Saturday the family puts on a 5K
run/walk.
My brother Tony had suggested we do a 5K because we have so many runners in our family who
have ran Grandmas Marathon or other races, Laura
said. A week before our first family gathering ever
was Grandmas Marathon. Now we call ours Grandma Bs 5K.
In preparation for the event, t-shirts and bib numbers were made. Each participating family member
registered, including babies in strollers.
Grandma Hildegard stood at the starting line and
rang an old cowbell, signaling the start of the race,
along with her number 1 bib number pinned on the
front of her t-shirt.
As all of the kids said, Grandma is No. 1.
The 3.1-mile run followed a gravel road that intertwined up and down hills and went by corn fields.
Some of the aunts and uncles walked or rode on
a trailer behind a tractor, while many of the cousins
ran the route.

were rewarded a prize a John Deere oven mitt and

winner with a time of 22 minutes.
After the run, everyone showered before joining
in a potluck lunch.
Everyone participates and has a job to do, so
everyone shares in the workload, Laura said.
The afternoon is packed full with activities, including water balloon fights, human-sized Jenga, potato shooting and bingo, amongst other things.
If an outdoor event is scheduled, the family always has a backup plan in case weather interferes
with a planned activity.
Last year, a mock wedding was held in the corncrib gazebo to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Gene
and Carol Bromenshenkel. This year, the family celebrated Lyle and Marilyn Uhlenkamps 50th anniversary.
For dinner, Hildegard provided hotdogs for grilling, and everyone else contributed to the rest of the
meal. The night continued with cards, games and
Bromenshenkel trivia, a trivia game with questions
and answers related to the Bromenshenkel family.
Sunday morning was the Big Daddy Breakfast
which included eggs, hash browns, onions and bacon. After breakfast, everyone helps clean up and
says their goodbyes.

a tiller, hoe or pick the weeds by hand. We
dont use any pesticides or herbicides.
What do you enjoy most about gardening? Eating the fruits of our labor! And
the quiet, thinking time garden therapy.
What is your favorite recipe using garden produce? Grandmas veggie soup.
The kids love grandmas vegetable soup!
Tell us your most useful gardening tip: Use plastic clips (we ordered ours from
a garden supply place) to clip the peas to metal fencing. It makes picking the peas
much easier.
What did you plant in your garden this year? Tomatoes, peppers,
basil, cucumbers, peas, kohlrabi,
beans, carrots, lettuce, radishes,
mint, flowers, eggplant, cabbage,
broccoli, zucchini, squash, pumpkins, watermelon...you know, a regular farmers market.
Is there anything new you tried
this year? Yes, I tried a new lettuce
called Corn Salad. We didnt like
the texture or the flavor. We pulled it
out and planted a spring salad mixture instead. I also planted Romaine,
thats wonderful.
Marlene and Dale VanHavermaet
Tell us about the most unusual
Ward Springs
thing youve ever grown: Purple
kohlrabi, they are purple on the outside, but white on the inside, and they have a little sweeter flavor that the green kohlrabi
does.
What has been your biggest challenge with your garden this year? Actually, Im not
really finding any challenges. Dale did a wonderful job with the soil.God has blessed us
with just the right kind of weather. Its a wonderful year for gardening!
How do you protect your garden from pests and weeds? We have raised gardens for
almost everything, so we havent noticed a big problem with pests, and weeding is so
easy, thats a non issue also.
What do you enjoy most about gardening? Watering the plants. I love the smell of wet
dirt and watching everything grow.
What is your favorite recipe using garden produce? Bruschetta with fresh tomatoes,
basil, olive oil, feta cheese and balsamic vinegar. And salsa.
Tell us your most useful gardening tip: Work hard in the spring to get rid of weeds,
then its much easier for the rest of the season to stay ahead of them.

What did you plan in your garden this

year? In our 1,800 square feet garden we
planted planted potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage, kale, carrots, beets, pea pods, peas,
green beans, radishes, onions, green, red
and yellow peppers, hot peppers, strawberries, raspberries, horseradish, rhubarb,
squash, pie pumpkins, cucumbers, zucchini, watermelon, sweet potatoes and dill.
Is there anything new you tried this year?
Kale, sweet potatoes and crazy hot peppers.
Tell us about the most unusual thing
youve ever grown: Celery.
What has been your biggest challenge
with your garden this year? The wind and
Jack and Linda Loch
hail. We put up wind accelerators to block
Sauk Centre
off some of the wind. The gophers have
been pretty bad too, eating the strawberries
and chewing into the sprinkler system. Deer have been around eating the top off
of the beets.
How do you protect your garden from pests and weeds? We are always weeding. Since April, we have put about 20-25 hours a week working in their garden.
What do you enjoy the most about gardening? The flavor of the food and we
know where our food is coming from. Last year we dug up 230 pounds of potatoes
and made homemade tator tots and fries. It is also great exercise. We spend a lot
of time tilling which is hard work.
What is your favorite recipe using garden produce? We try to make food ahead
of time, so once dinner time rolls around there is little prep time. For entrees we
like lasagna and spaghetti and for snacks we like canning salsa and making fresh
jalepeo poppers filled with peanut butter, wrapped in turkey bacon and topped
with BBQ sauce.
Tell us your most useful gardening tip: You have to do it dailywe are out
there a couple times a day. Like Lindas mom would say, You cant be a weekend
farmer. Its fun to look outside and see the growth everyday.
