Piano tuning/restoration clinic
This will an overview of the equal-temperament tuning system
demonstrated on the standard Yamaha P-22 piano by Berklee
College of Music work-study student Alexander Anderson. The clinic
will be broken into two main parts; the piano tuning, and the
maintenance and restoration of broken parts.

What factors affect a pianos pitch?
Hearing the harmonic series
Tuning the unisons
Tuning the octaves
Setting the temperament
Piano Maintenance:
The parts of the piano cabinet
The parts of the pedals
The parts of the piano action
Adjusting the capstans, keyboard regulation
Trash, dust, dirt removal
Broken keys, hammers, strings.
Rebushing keys
Tying a string off
Voicing the hammers

Basic keyboard/Jazz Piano Workshop
This will be an open keyboard/piano workshop ranging from
beginning piano students, to intermediate players, to advanced
pianists focused on jazz improvisation. We will have a basic/beginner
class focused on basic piano theory, and jazz tunes, as well as a
more advanced class with advanced practice techniques and
repertoire.

Rhythm Section Workshop
The rhythm section workshops will feature the
members of the AfroXchange primarily hosting a jam
session, and demonstrating various jazz improvisation
techniques over original music, and jazz standards. We
will be focusing on the following techniques:

Roles of different instruments in ensemble playing


Basic jazz rhythms (swing)
What is swing?
Popular song forms in American music
Jazz vocabulary (transcriptions, listening)
Jazz repertoire
Incorporating different grooves with ensemble
playing
Call & response
Communicating through sound
Q&A with regards to specific instrument techniques,
and experiences.
Incorporating traditional African elements of rhythm
& melody.
