Orlandos Theory
PERSON
Patients are defined by greater aspects than their illness.
The expression of need, both verbal and non-verbal, is seen
as a whole need being addressed in pursuit of health
(Sitzman & Eichelberger, 2004). Thoughts, feelings, and
perceptions clearly and correctly identified in a patient by
the nurse aids in faster resolution of distress
(Tabers Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary, 2013).
ENVIRONMENT
Manipulation of a persons internal and external
surroundings can add to or alleviate patient stress or
illness. The nurse works with the patient to mitigate
environmental stressors (Black, 2014).

Orlandos Theory
HEALTH
Health is a dynamic characteristic that includes both the
physical and mental health of the person. The nurse
validates each intervention based on if the health of the
patient is improved (Sitzman & Eichelberger, 2004).
NURSING
Good nursing is produced by assessing patient perception,
thoughts, or feelings and responding appropriately (Fitne,
n.d.). Decreasing patient distress improves patient
outcomes and strengthens nurse-patient
relationships. Effective nursing is deliberative, not
automatic (Sitzman & Eichelberger, 2004).
