Brochure
Date: 7.8.16
Course & Section: Communications 130-01
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Description: A two-sided (duplex) offset mock brochure using the adobe programs including a self made logo,
personally written copy, and my own design.
Programs: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
- Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.
- Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.
- Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality images, not including the logo. One should be clipped in
Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image.
- Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs, headers,
and subheaders.
- Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.
Process: I decided to create a brochure about an outdoor resort because I love everything outdoors camping, fishing,
hiking, etc. I found some images that inspired me and pulled an indigo and lime complimentary color scheme from
them. After settling on a color scheme, I created my logo using Adobe Illustrator. I used the pen tool to create a simple
mountain/river design and included contrast in the words of my logo. Once my logo was created, I began playing around
with the placement and alignment of the design on InDesign. I placed the photos and aligned the text and headings. I
added a few visual elements like the lines and the watermark in the background. In Photoshop, I used the
quick-selection tool to select the bear, then refined the selection and pasted it into the InDesign document and created
a text wrap. As a finishing touch, I used guides to check the alignment.

Montage
Date: 5.28.16
Course & Section: Communications 130-01
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Description: An inspirational montage design formed by combining typography with the blending together of
multiple photos.
Programs: Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
- Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flow
- Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message
- Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks
- Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements
- Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image
- Apply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scriptures - your choice)
- Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size. Theme word(s)
- Select good quality images
Process: I started by searching for images online that coincided with this quote that I love. Once, I had found several, I
created a 8.5x11 document in Adobe Photoshop and placed the first picture of stormy waves into the document as the
background. My second image used in the montage, the picture of the girl, was much too bright for the background, so
I used colorizing filters to add a more bluish tint to this image, as well as darkening it a little bit. I then used the lasso
tool to feather-select the girl standing on the cliff edge, and paste her into the document. I used a masking layer and
the masking brush with varying opacities and sizes to gradually blend the rocky ledge into the choppy oceans. The third
image I added to the montage was the lighthouse. The colors were off in this photo as well, so once again, I used a filter
to make it fit the color scheme of my design then used the same process as I did with my second image to blend it into
my montage. I added a separate image of waves following the same process to the background to make them appear
more choppy. I also added a cloud texture to make the sky look darker and more stormy. Last of all, I added the quote
and played around with the fonts and alignment until I was satisfied. I completed this entire project using only
Adobe Photoshop.

Event Ad
Date: 5.14.16
Course & Section: Communications 130-01
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Description: A full-bleed, high resolution, full color event ad created by using only Microsoft Word.
Programs: Microsoft Word
Objectives:
- Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together)
- Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
- Create a full-bleed design.
- Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience.
- Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.

Logo
Date: 6.8.16
Course & Section: Communications 130-01
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Description: A professional logo designed for an organization using only Adobe Illustrator.
Programs: Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
- Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image that will appeal to the audience.
Do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs.
- Market research: gather opinions from at least ten people about which logo appeals most to them.
- Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos. (No Illustrator pre-fabricated flares, symbols, etc.. No
photos or live-tracing. You may use an image or drawing as a guide to trace it with the pen/pencil, but delete the image
before submitting.)
- Refine one logo with variations for color
Process: This project was my first experience with Adobe Illustrator and I definitely learned a lot by trial and error. I
started by creating three completely different logos with various color schemes and visual elements. I then gathered
feedback from other people and based on their comments, selected the above design as the most effective and
visually appealing image, and refined it. I mainly worked with shapes and fonts with this logo. I used the polygon shape
tool to create the triangular outline of the design, and played with the stroke to add the border effect. I then combined
multiple triangles to create the snowy peak of the mountain. Lastly, I combined the edgy sans serif font with a simple,
bold script font to give the logo a woodsy yet modern feel.

Flier
Date: 5.6.16
Course & Section: Communications 130-01
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Description: Black and white promotional flier to advertise a business leadership conference for recent graduates.
Programs: Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
- Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.
- Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.
- Retrieve image and logo from links on this page.
- Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links in InDesign intact.
Process: To get some ideas flowing, I sketched four different designs on paper then selected my favorite of the designs
to continue refining. On Adobe InDesign, I laid out a similar design, added boxes to create repetition and unity within the
piece. I made the focal point of my design the smiling students and created a line to draw the viewers eye down to the
title and body content. I used deep contrast between black and white to make the lettering and logo stand out against
the busy background photo. I kept the body copy small and professional, contrasting it with the large, loud title fonts.
All images and content for this flier were provided.

Business Card
Date: 6.11.16
Course & Section: Communications 130-01
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Description: A clean, professional business card with a self-selected color scheme and
self-made logo.
Programs: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
- Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.
- Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs. Dont use
photos or live trace.
- Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card. Photos are okay on business card as additional
design elements. Business card should be 3.5 x 2 and printed above center on a vertical page.
- Apply typography rules, keeping small copy.
- Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of white space.
- Include contact information: name, address, phone, website, and email on each piece. Use
periods, bullets, or spaces in phone number; no parentheses/ hyphens.
Process: After researching the main tools and icons used in surveying to use for my logo inspiration, I first created the
logo in Adobe Illustrator. I used mainly the shape tools and transform effects to create a sleek, simple compass and
tripod as the visual component of the logo, then combined it with clean, professional font to make the design stand
out without being too busy. I settled on the color scheme because surveying tripods are often a gold-yellow color and
I thought the complimentary indigo helped make the design pop appropriately. After creating the logo in Illustrator, I
transferred it over to Adobe InDesign and laid it out on the business card. I added the contact information using the
same font that I used in the logo to tie them together. I then added a few simple, color-scheme appropriate design
elements (like lines) to make the stationery more visually appealing without creating visual distractions than would
detract from the important information.

Letterhead
Date: 7.8.16
Course & Section: Communications 130-01
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Description: A clean, professional letterhead design with a self-selected color scheme and
self-made logo.
Programs: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
- Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.
- Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing logos or use
previous designs. Dont use photos or live trace.
- Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a letterhead. Photos are okay on letterhead as additional design
elements. Letterhead should be 8.5 x 11, full-bleed optional, but trim only .125.
- Apply typography rules, keeping small copy.
- Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of white space.
- Include contact information: name, address, phone, website, and email on each piece. Use periods, bullets, or spaces
in phone number; no parentheses/ hyphens.

Web Page
Date: 6.25.16
Course & Section: Communications 130-01
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Description: A web page designed using HTML and CSS to showcase a personally created logo.
Programs: TextWrangler, w3schools.com, Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
- Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long side is 300 500 pixels.
- Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target
audience.
- Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. (Include all required tags Doctype (provided), html, head, title, meta
charset (provided), body, h1, h2, p, ol or ul (with li tags), img, br, and a link to blog)
- Acquire a working knowledge of CSS. (Customize the provided CSS provided to format the HTML to complement the
logo design. Change at least the following: The h1 text color & h1 background color, font colors for the paragraphs & list
items, the background color, font families and add at least one css comment.)
- Identify hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color picker.
- Open the HTML page in a web browser and capture a quality screen shot with .5 inch margins for printing.
Process: I used only the code editing app Text Wrangler for macintosh to create my webpage, aside from resizing my
logo and making it transparent, and adjusting the colors of my background image in photoshop. I opened basic, preloaded HTML and CSS documents in linked them in the program. I edited the content in the HTML document to pertain
to my logo project and sourced my logo image into the page as well. After the content was updated, I shifted my focus
to the design aspect of the webpage.I initially pulled the colors from my logo to create gold headings and an indigo
background, but I didnt think it looked very professional, so I just went with black and white for the body and headings
instead. I updated the fonts to Georgia for the body and Tahoma for the headings. I selected Tahoma because it
looked similar to the font used in my Logo Raleway. I added 2 back up fonts to each category in case someones
browser couldnt support my first font options.I opted to do a photo background rather than a colored
background, as I thought it added a level of professionalism and made my page stand out. I used information from the
code validating/web developing site w3schools.com to learn how to insert an image as the background. Lastly, to align
the logo and copy as best I could and give them enough space from the edge of the border. I also changed the size of
the bordered area to allow more of the background image to show.

Photo Design
Date: 5.22.16
Course & Section: Communications 130-01
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Description: Portrayed a color scheme in a poster layout with an original photo edited using Photoshop.
Programs: Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
- Learn basic photography skills.
- Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the colors into
the layout.
- Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
- Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.)
- Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout.
- Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.
Process: I first formulated my plan by selecting a color scheme from the color wheel that I would use throughout my
project (both image and design.) I decided to go with analagous because I thought it would be easier to find in nature
than some of the other color schemes. I explored for a while, looking for the perfect shot, and snapped a picture of this
large pill bug I found walking toward some flowers. To take the picture, I used a Nikon CoolPix L610. After making sure
that I had a clear, quality photo with good composition and lighting, I used Adobe Photoshop to make basic edits on the
photo, including refining the saturation, levels, sharpness, and color balance. I placed the image into an 8x11 document and began trying out different design elements that went along with the analagous color scheme of the photo,
as well as finding a quote that I think went with the picture. I added the swatches (making sure they closely matched
the image and those in the color wheel) and the color scheme title to my design. One of my favorite parts of my design
are the patterned transparent squares that border the poster. I think this creates flow and repetition from the swatches
and also incorporates the color scheme throughout the entire design without overshadowing the image or quote. For a
finishing touch, I made sure the quote was aligned properly and that dragged guides throughout my design to ensure
that I was happy with the placement of everything in my image. I feel that my design accurately incorporates my color
scheme throughout, as well as showcasing many of the design principles.
