Brochure

Description

This project was created for a fictional family-owned farm

which grows berries and cherries and invites the public to
come pick and pay for their own fresh fruit.

Program/Tools

For this project I used Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and

Photoshop.

Objectives

Create a two-sided duplex layout with a full-bleed design.

Learn how to text wrap around an image.
Learn how to use and apply paragraph styles in InDesign.

Process I knew I wanted to use a lot of contrast and

give the brochure a rustic feel. So I used neutral, textured

backgrounds in black and white to create that contrast
and rustic design. I cloned the black background in
Photoshop to stretch it to a fill a full-bleed 8.5x11.
Since most of the berries and cherries at this farm are
vibrant red, the contrast against the neutrals brings
attention to the color of the fruit in the logo and images.
I created the Irvine Cherry & Berry Farm logo with
Illustrator. I tried to keep it simple and let the contrast
and logo be what draws the eye.

Program/Tools

For this project I used Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign.

Objectives

Create a business card and stationery suite that uses consistent

repetition. Create a new logo for a specific business. Apply
legible typography and effective color scheme.

Process

I started by developing my logo with InDesign. I decided to use

colors that were reminescent of sweets, such as pink, teal and
cream. I simplified the cake in the logo and incorporated the
banner that I had originally created as a separate design element.
I tried to put emphasis on the business and professionals names.
I kept it simple, and worked a lot with the alignment of the
contact information.

I used Adobe Illustrator for the logo and Adobe InDesign
for the layout.

Objectives
Create stationery with adequate whitespace to allow
letter-writing. Apply repetition for a consistent suite.

Process

I developed the logo for Tiers 4 U, and simplified my

letterhead in the process. I used repetition of colors
and elements like the simple teal line. I worked a lot
with the alignment of the contact information. I tried to
balance the contact information with the logo so it would
communicate the most important information. I felt the
contrast of the colored bar against the white would be
simple and effective to draw attention where necessary.

Wedding Invitation
Description

This project was created for a fictional couple announcing their

marriage to friends and family.

Date

Instructor

Program/Tools

I used InDesign primarily, with some detail work in Photoshop.

Objectives

Create a new optional project that communicates the intended

message. Use repetition and simplicity.

Process

I researched images that to use for a fictional couple, and

found this one and fell in love. I knew that I wanted to create
a simple, woodsy design with a gold and white color scheme.
I found the wreath image for free online, and thought it fit the
theme perfectly. I used Photoshop to put a color overlay that
would make the wreath a gold color. I made sure to balance a
whimsical script font with a classy, legible serif font. I tried to
bring out the most important information, dates/places/time,
and bend the names by typing on a shape to make it unique.

Program/Tools
This project was created using solely Microsoft Word.

Objectives
Apply knowledge of color schemes. Use a scanner to transfer
a printed image to a digital file. Learn to design a layout using
Microsoft Word.

Process

I began by finding an image in Brides magazine from my

favorite wedding dress designer, Hayley Paige. I loved the color
and dynamic photography. I scanned the image to a digital file
and placed in a Word document. I scanned in Hayley Paiges
signature (her logo) and used the remove background feature.
I found a font as similar as possible to the Susan G. Komen
logo and played with the size and alignment to imitate it. I used
shapes to create the small pink ribbon, the breast cancer symbol.
I used simple, classy, legible fonts besides the logos, and played
with the alignment and sizes to communiate the most important
information.I tried to create a clear flow of hierarchy.

Adobe Photoshop

Objectives
Learn to use masking layers in Photoshop to blend images
together. Apply contrasting typography.

Process

I started with the inspiration of a profile with double exposure. I
wanted to communicate the divinity within the female character
by layering it with an image of a cloudy sunset. I masked in the
horizon line with the starry sky image to create the setting. I
found an image of Jesus Christ and masked it in with subtle
feathering and transparency. I wanted Him to be reaching out
to the female character, but the original photo had him clasping
hands with another person, so I found an image of Christs hand,
outstretched, and masked it over the original hand at the wrist.
It took some manipulation of size, angle, and opacity, but it fit in
the end. I kept the typography simple, but created contrast.

Program/Tools
I used Adobe Illustrator to create this logo.

Objective

Develop a new logo through elimination and revision. Use

variation and contrast in typography.

Process
I started by developing three different logos of different styles
and colors. I surveyed which of the three people found most
appealing. I combined elements from a couple of the logos, and
created the vine and flowers myself with shapes and the pen
tool in Illustrator. I tried to make the vines feel organic and free,
and chose an analagous color scheme of green, teal, and blue. I
decided to contrast my typograpy with a sans serif and a script,
that would make the logo feel both youthful and modern, while
attempting to appeal to the older audience as well.

I edited the HTML and CSS codes with TextWrangler.

Objectives

Learn to manipulate HTML and CSS coding to create a

web page with consistent color and typography. Use tags with
indention and comments to organize the coding.

Process

I started with a basic idea of what I wanted the web page to look
like. I had a basic outline for the CSS code, and made changes
to the colors and typography. I was able to find a background
image that matched the message of my logo, and placed it in
the CSS. I placed the logo in the HTML within the header. I
was able to manipulate the text box to make it transparent with
RGB color settings, and used <div> to make the head and body
different percentages of opacity. I spent some time manipulating
the title box so it would be filled with color and stretch across
the text box. I wrote the body copy myself and formatted it in
HTML to provide organization and hierarchy.

Adobe InDesign

Objectives

Use the given body copy and images to organize a layout

in InDesign. Create a hierarchy with an effective title (not
the logo).

Process

I started with a handful of sketches for layout ideas, and chose

one that was simple and utilized contrast and whitespace.
This was my first attempt at Adobe InDesign, and all things
considered, it was relatively painless because of the simplicity of
my layout. I worked to manipulate the text into a hierarchy that
would communicate the right message to the right audience. I
kept the text simple and professional and created contrast with
the crisp black and white. The gray text box draws attention to
itself because of its compatible but different value.

Camera: Nikon D60, Adobe Photoshop
Objectives
Apply basic photography skills and Photoshop editing functions.
Apply color scheme knowledge and add design elements to the
chosen photo. Create contrasted typography.

Process

I began by taking several photos with different subjects and

arrangement. I chose one of my favorites and edited it with
Photoshop. I enhanced the color, manipulated the levels, and
sharpened certain areas of the photo, of my subjects hair and
eyes. I picked out purple and green from the photo and added
yellow to complete the color scheme. I tried to balance the
values so they would be compatible, and not conflict with one
another. Thats why I placed the design elements on the white
background. I created the flowers/leaves in Illustrator to create
repetition from the photo. I used contrasting typography that
matched the message and theme of the photo.
