NebraskalicensedoccupationaltherapistshavealicenserenewaleverytwoyearswithanAugust1stdeadline,
evenyears.
Twenty(20)continuingeducationhoursarerequiredforoccupationaltherapists,andfifteen(15)hoursfor
occupationaltherapistassistants.
Therearenolimitsforonlinecontinuingeducationhours.Theboarddoesnotpreapprovecontinuingeducation
courses.
Contentmustrelatetooccupationaltherapyandmeetboardguidelinestobeaccepted.

personally.Whydoesonedecisionwinoutoveranother?Whatdoesthedecisionprocessinvolve?Howdothese
decisionsimpactthoseinvolved?Thiscoursewilladdressthesequestionsfromtheframeworkofethicaldecision
modelsandtheAmericanOccupationalTherapyAssociationsCodeofEthics.

Cyberbullying
Cyberbullyingisa2houronlinecontinuingeducation(CE/CEU)coursethatreviewsevidencedbasedresearchfor
identification,managementandpreventionofcyberbullyinginchildren,adolescentsandadults.Bullieshavemoved
fromtheplaygroundandworkplacetotheonlineworld,whereanonymitycanfacilitatebullyingbehavior.
Cyberbullyingisintentional,repeatedharmtoanotherpersonusingcommunicationtechnology.Itisnotaccidental

orrandom.Itistargetedtoapersonwithlessperceivedpower.Thismaybesomeoneyounger,weaker,orless
knowledgeableabouttechnology.Anycommunicationdevicemaybeusedtoharassorintimidateavictim,such
asacellphone,tablet,orcomputer.Anycommunicationplatformmayhostcyberbullying:socialmediasites
(Facebook,Twitter),applications(Snapchat,AIM),websites(forumsorblogs),andanyplacewhereoneperson
cancommunicatewithoratanotherpersonelectronically.Theshortandlongtermeffectsofbullyingare
consideredassignificantasneglectormaltreatmentasatypeofchildabuse.Thiscoursewilldescribespecific
cyberbullyingbehaviors,reviewtheoriesthatattempttoexplainwhybullyinghappens,listthedamagingeffects
thatbefallitsvictims,anddiscussstrategiesprofessionalscanusetopreventormanageidentifiedcyberbullying.
Cyberbullyingisafastgrowingareaofconcernandallhealthcareprofessionalsshouldbeequippedtospotthe
signsandprovidesupportforourpatientsandclients,aswellaskeepupwiththetechnologythatdrives
cyberbullying.

MedicalMarijuana
MedicalMarijuanaisa3houronlinecontinuingeducation(CE)coursethatpresentsasummaryofthecurrent
literatureonthevariousmedical,legal,educational,occupational,andethicalaspectsofmarijuana.Inspiteofthe
factthatnearlyhalfofthestatesinthiscountryhaveenactedlegislationlegalizingmarijuanainsomefashion,the
realityisthatneithertheintendedmedicalbenefitsofmarijuananoritsknown(andasyetunknown)adverse
effectshavebeenadequatelyexaminedusingcontrolledstudies.Conclusiveliteratureremainssparse,andopinion
remainsdividedandcontentious.Thiscoursewilladdressthemajorquestionsaboutmarijuanathatareasyet
unansweredbyscientificevidence.Whataretheknownmedicalusesformarijuana?Whatisthelegalstatusof
marijuanainstateandfederallegislation?Whataretheinteractionswithmentalhealthconditionslikeanxiety,
depression,andsuicidalbehavior?Ismarijuanaaddictive?Ismarijuanaagatewaydrug?Whataretheadverse
consequencesofmarijuanause?Dostatemedicalmarijuanalawsincreasetheuseofmarijuanaandotherdrugs?
Thecoursewillconcludewithalistofimplicationsforhealthcareandmentalhealthpractitioners.

CommunicationwithElders
WiththeincreasingnumberofolderpeopleintheUnitedStates,itisvitalforhealthcareprofessionalsto
communicateeffectivelyandrespectfullywithelders.Effective,appropriatecommunicationwitheldersisimportant
formanyreasons.Foroccupationaltherapists,communicationisthefoundationofservicedelivery.
Communicationisrequiredforassessmentofthepersonpriortotreatment.Symptomsare,afterall,subjectiveand
mustbereportedbythepersontotheclinician.Effectivecommunicationalsocontributestohealthliteracythe
personsunderstandingofhercondition,treatmentoptions,andthetreatmentplantobefollowed.Apersoncannot
complywithatreatmentprogramunlesstheprogramiscommunicatedclearlyenoughforthepersontounderstand
it.Themoreeffectivethecommunication,themoreeffectivetreatmentwillbeandthemorecosteffective.
Communicationalsohelpstheclinicianunderstandthewholeperson:theemotional,social,andfinancialrealities
thataffectresponsetotreatmentandabilitytocomply.Thiscourseprovidesanoverviewofagingchangesthat
affectcommunication,dysfunctionalcommunicationhabitstoavoid,andstrategiesforappropriatecommunication
withelders.
