CHAPTER 4

ANALYSIS

4.1

Material selection
In this final project, the study analysis was conducted to determine the most

suitable material to build pineapple cutting machine. It aims to ensure that the material
used to make this engine meets the requirements of appropriate and correct. Suitability
of materials by mechanical properties must be determined correctly.

4.1.1

Brainstorming

Brainstorming (Figure 4.1) is a group creativity technique by which a group tries

to find a solution for a specific problem by gathering a list of ideas spontaneously
contributed by its members.

Calculation

From this project, we calculate the gear mechanism of this machine. The
calculations that involve are angular velocity for each gear, the angular revolution total,
and torque for each gear.

Design drawing

Through this project, we have been design the shape of this machine for this
project using solidworks 2014 software. SolidWork is a Parasolid-based solid modeler,
and utilizes a parametric featured-based approach to create models and assemblies.
Parameters can be either numeric parameters, such as line length or circle diameters, or
geometric parameter, such as tangent, parallel, concentric, horizontal or vertical, etc.
Numeric parameters can be associated with each other through the use of relations,
which allows them to capture design intent.

Building a model in solidWork usually starts with a 2D sketch (although 3D

sketches are available for power users). The sketch consists of geometry such as points,
lines, arcs, conics (except the hyperbola), and spines. Dimension are added to the sketch
to define the size and location of the geometry. Relation are used to define attributes
such as tangency, parallelism, perpendicularity, and concentricity. The parametric nature
of SolidWork means that the dimensions and relations drive the geometry, not the other

way around. The dimensions in the sketch can be controlled independently, or by

relationships to other parameters inside or outside of the sketch.

4.4

Design drawing using SolidWork

From this project, we have design the part of component of this machine using
SolidWork 2014. In this drawing, we have added the dimension and assembly all the part
of this machine to complete the full design of this machine. The components that have
been assemble can be seen in Figure 4.3. The component that have been assemble in
SolidWork called Bill Of Material (BOM). Besides, we also draw the isometric drawing
of this machine (Figure 4.4).

4.5

Discussion

From this chapter, we have been selected the suitable material to build a
pineapple cutting machine. We have been through several discussions with our group
members and supervisor about the material selection. For main body of this machine we
have use solid steel that use types of welding joint. The power transmitter to operate this
machine was servo motor that use electric power supply. For the cutting mechanism of
this machine we together selected the stainless steel core slicer due to food
manufacturing safety.

4.6

Conclusion

From this topic, we can see the physic law and mechanical process applied in the
project. From the analysis, we can relate from what we learn from our subject and
applied it to our project. Moreover, we can sharpen our skills of physics and dynamic
application that we learn through our learning in the university. We also increase the
understanding of engineering subject through this project such as material selection,
dynamics, and others. Other than that, we also have done and sharpen our skill of
solidwork application drawing software to create the actual 3D design for the project and
make the schematic drawing of the project.
