What are the three basic health and safety rights at any workplace?

1) Keep a safe and well-maintained workplace


2) Provide hazard information, proper safety equipment, training and competent
supervision
3) Follow proper procedure in case of injury

What should you do if you think you should have special safety equipment and
don't?
I think you should contact your supervisor / manager and tell them there is a
shortage on safety equipment and you cant work until there is another suit for
you to wear. If there is another suit for you to wear, but you forgot it, just ask
another worker to take care of your shift for 15 minutes while you go and get it
on.

Do you have the right to refuse unsafe work?

Yes, if you are a worker here in Ontario you can refuse to do any work that you believe
is unsafe and with reason to that, you may refuse to do it.

What is WHMIS training?


WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) training refers to
emergency procedures, general workplace safety and to give the workers an
understanding of dangers in their workplace.

What should you do if you get injured at work?

The first step if you get injured is to receive treatment from a hospital, clinic, or whatever
it may be. The next step is to tell your supervisor / manager how you got injured so they
can solve and fix the problem for others. You will also have to complete a claim for
workers compensation on Form C-3.

As a student/young worker, does the ESA (Employment Standards Act) apply to


you? Are there exemptions?
Yes it does apply to us high school / young workers and there are a few
exemptions for us.

How can you tell if you are not being paid correctly?

When you are you are supposed to get your check, you will receive a pay slip that has
all the details of your hours worked etc.

As a young worker, are you entitled to paid statutory holidays?

Yes, for most jobs (only excluding a few that mostly deal with children and gardening)
you get Christmas, boxing day, new years, family day, thanksgiving day, Canada day etc
off.
10. Are you entitled to lunch and coffee breaks?
After every 5 consecutive hours that you work, you are entitled to at least 30 minutes of
lunch break. Employers do not have to give any other breaks as long as they have the
eating period.
11. Can an employer deduct the cost of a company uniform from your pay?
Yes, they can deduct the cost from your pay as long as they have written consent from
you to take money off.
12. What should you do if you think you are a victim of discrimination in the
workplace?
Speak to a professional from an organisation and ask for help and they will tell you
some steps you should take. Then you should contact a company / agency that will help
you take action against the company.
13. If you feel you have been fired unjustly, who should you contact?
Contact the manager of the company and ask them to give you a viable reason to why
you were fired, and if they cannot give you an answer or the answer is just made up and
fake, you should file a complaint against the company.
