Computer Science: From ISTE Standards

Plan and teach computer science lessons/units using effective and engaging practices and
methodologies:
Select a variety of real-world computing problems and project-based methodologies that
support active and authentic learning and provide opportunities for creative and innovative
thinking and problem solving
Demonstrate the use of a variety of collaborative groupings in lesson plans/units and
assessments
Design activities that require students to effectively describe computing artifacts and
communicate results using multiple forms of media
Develop lessons and methods that engage and empower learners from diverse cultural and
linguistic backgrounds
Identify problematic concepts and constructs in computer science and appropriate strategies to
address them
Design and implement developmentally appropriate learning opportunities supporting the
diverse needs of all learners
Create and implement multiple forms of assessment and use resulting data to capture student
learning, provide remediation, and shape classroom instruction. (source)

20 Grade level learners

Culture: 5 students with diverse cultural backgrounds
Personality: Learners range in personality types based on a previous Meyers-Briggs
personality test. There are 3 highly introverted individuals; 3 individuals high on the intuitive
scale; 7 individuals were high on the thinking scale; 11 students were high on the judging
scale
MI Theory: Learners in this course show preferences for the visual, logical, kinesthetic
intelligences
Brief pre-test on the students understanding of how technology impacts the modern world.
Teacher will lead in in-class discussion of technology in modern society and include probing
open-ended questions about leaders from several cultural areas.

Content: Students will be able to select their own influential leader in technology (hardware
or software) based on their research.
Process: Students may work in groups or individually. Students will be required to include
one activity for their fellow students to complete of their choice, either technology-based or
text-based, and can include puzzles or other activities to help teach other students about
their individual and the impact on modern society.
Product: Students will create a multimedia presentation using either Capzles or Prezi.
Students have options for elements to include in the presentation, but will also have
minimum element requirements. Students may include static photos, videos, music, and
textual documents. Students will also include one activity to help fellow classmates learn

about their influential leader. Students may include puzzles or activities and links will be
provided to Cube Creator and Puzzlemaker.

How will you

differentiate?
(Readiness,
Interest,
Learning Profile)

Readiness: Teacher-led discussion and pre-test on general ideas of computer technology in

modern society.
Interest: Survey given at beginning of lesson/course
Learning Profile: Multiple intelligence test given at beginning of year; Meyers-Briggs
personality test given at beginning of year.

Students are free to

Students will be allowed to work

in groups of two or may work
individually. Using the Capzles or
Prezi websites, students may
choose the type of media used to
illustrate the key points of their
influential leader with minimum
requirements. Students may add
additional items above minimum
requirements. Students may
select any individual influential
leader in technology (hardware or
software) that may be of any
culture.

PostAssessment
(How will you

In a 5-day period, students will independently or in groups of two, research influential leaders
in the field of technology. The students will create a multimedia presentation using either
Capzles or Prezi presentation software. Student will use internet resources for text, videos,
photos, images, music or sounds clips, or other graphic materials to complete the projects.
Students may also use Cube Creator or Puzzlemaker to create learning materials to embed in
their presentation or as handouts for their presentation to help engage their fellow students
to learn about their influential leader.
Students will be given a resource page with links to the presentation software and tutorials,
Cube Creator and Puzzlemaker, and some suggested research resources.
Student assessment will be based upon the final Capzles or Prezi presentation and a
specified rubric. Students will be given the rubric ahead of time with minimum content
requirements and media elements. Capzles or Prezi presentations will be posted to a class
wiki page to share viewpoints and perspectives on technological leaders and their influences
on modern society. Other students will view the presentations and share comments on the
presentations and the leaders presented.
Students will be required to submit a reflection paper within their presentation (by each
group member) on what they learned about the leader they chose and the impact the leader
had on modern society. The paper will include a reflection on the multimedia software they
used and the impact of the presentation software for displaying their topics which should
allow for information necessary to revise the lesson for future students.
Student participating in groups will be required to submit a peer evaluation form assessing
each students input on the project.
