for U.S. Congress in Virginia’s 11th district (36% to 23%). Another 41% of voters are
undecided. This represents a significant shift towards Keith Fimian since the March
survey when Pat Herrity was ahead 29% to 17%.

election for United States Congress between Keith Fimian and Pat Herrity?

Pat Herrity’s Negative Attacks Are Backfiring

have an unfavorable opinion of him. His name identification is at 92% among
Republican primary voters. Keith Fimian’s favorable rating (23% to 52%) and name
identification (55% to 92%) have both increased significantly since March. Given Keith
Fimian’s five to one positive rating and lead on the ballot, Pat Herrity’s negative attacks
have not been effective.
Now, I am going to read you a list of names. Will you please tell me if you have a favorable or unfavorable
opinion of each person? If you have no opinion or have never heard of the person, just say so.

A plurality of voters (47%) has a favorable opinion of Pat Herrity, while 18% have an

as a tax and spend politician, his negatives increase.

Conclusions:

Keith Fimian is in a good position to beat Pat Herrity in the Republican primary race for
U.S. Congress. Keith Fimian now enjoys a double-digit advantage over Pat Herrity on
the primary ballot. His favorable rating and name identification have increased
significantly since March. Conversely, Pat Herrity’s favorable rating remains constant
and his negatives have grown now that voters have been made aware of his tax increases.
Voters do not find Pat Herrity’s claims that he cut taxes to be credible. In fact, his
negatives are increasing because they now understand that he raised property taxes.
Clearly, the momentum in this campaign has now swung to Keith Fimian whose record
as a job creator and tax fighter is resonating with voters.

Methodology:

McLaughlin & Associates conducted a survey of 300 likely Republican primary voters in
Virginia’s 11th Congressional District on May 12th and 13th, 2010. All interviews were
conducted via telephone by professional interviewers. Respondents were randomly
selected within predetermined geographic units structured to correlate with actual voter
turnout. The survey of 300 likely Republican primary voters has an accuracy of +/- 5.7%
at a 95% confidence interval.
