DISNEYS POP CENTURY RESORT

BRIGHT SUN GAMING
[NORMAL INTRO]
Today were talking about Disneys Pop Century Resort the Legendary Years. Not
gonna lie this is kind of a creepy one.
Right so, in the early to mid 90s Disney took a gamble on a relatively new idea and
opened 3 value priced resorts. These were Disneys All Star Sports Resort, Disneys
All Star Music and Disneys All Star Movies Resort. I just said that. These turned out to
be very successful and a good pay off. So Disney wanted to step it up a little. So in
the year 2000 Disney announced they would build the largest value resort on
property that housed a staggering 5760 rooms displaced in 20 buildings.
This planned resort was to be built right outside of Disneys ESPN Sports Complex.
The resort was to be divided by 2 distinct sections. These were the Legendary Years
and the Classic Years. The Legendary Years was going to have oversized props that
were themed from the 1900s to the 1940s. The Classic Years side would be the same
only that would be themed from the 1950s to the 1990s. These separate sections
would be divided by Hourglass lake. A bridge named the Generation Gap would
connect the two. In addition, the buildings would have an extra floor then the other
value resorts.
Construction started in 1999 on both halfs. The resort was officially set to open in
2001. But sometime in June of that year Disney announce they would postpone the
opening until March of 2002. This was done because Disney stated they had
concerns over the appearance of a parcelly completed property. Then came the
devastating events of 9/11. A sever drop in tourism occurred which meant a great
loss of visitors the Walt Disney Resort. This caused Disney to partially close sections
of existing resorts to cut costs. Disney also announced the March 2002 opening date
for pop century would be cancelled.
Construction then resumed on the Classic Years as the Legendary Years side sat
uncompleted as Disney had no need for the 2880 value rooms. Then on December
14th 2003, Disneys Pop Century resort opened officially to the public. Reviews were
fairly popular as the resort was well themed and had a cheap price as low as $77 a
night.
The Legendary Years side on the other hand was roughly about 35% complete. Only
2 guests buildings were constructed along with small utility buildings and the main
lobby. Outlines and even the foundation of the other buildings could be seen on the
ground. Piping and electrical for those buildings would also be seen in the ground for
the future buildings. As for the already built buildings, they were only an empty shell
as only the pluming and some electrical was installed. The guest buildings were
empty shells. The lobby was also presumed to be completely empty inside as well.
Some of the props for the hotel were also seen on the left side of the lobby. Parking
lots were also completely constructed.
Guest starting spotting the abandon building across hour Glass Lake which lead to
some complaints about the new hotel. A chain linked fence was used to keep guests

off the legendary years site. The generation gap bridge was kept open but when you
reached the other end of it tall and dense foliage was grown to hide the building from
view. With Pop Century doing very well, Disney announced that the Legendary Years
would open in 2007. Strangely enough and no reason given, no work ever resumed
on the resort.
So what happened to the resort? Well, in 2005 The Nickelodeon Suits Resort
opened. We all know how I feel about this hotel, but the fact of the matter is Disney
took notice that people loved the family suits. So in 2006 Disney introduced brand
new family suits in the All Star Music Resort. Now with that in, it became a huge
success. This actually could have been the reason that Disney didnt move forward
with the 2007 opening date of the Legendary Years.
So with the great success of the Family Suits, Disney announced in May of 2010
that a brand new resort would be built to occupy the Legendary Years site. The resort
would house 1,120 family suits and since they Legendary Years site had 2 buildings
with normal rooms constructed, the new resort would have 864 normal rooms. As
well When construction began Disney actually decided to use the existing buildings.
The new suite buildings would go exactly where the original outlines of where the
original buildings were supposed to go. The new resort was to be named Disneys Art
of Animation Resort.
7 Buildings make up the Suits and 3 buildings were used for the standard rooms.
Both existing buildings were used along with one new building to make up the
Standard rooms area. You can actually tell by the color of the roofs on whats new.
Disneys Art Of Animation officially opened to the public on May 31 2012.
Personally I like the resort, it had the largest pool on property and you can hear
music underwater, which is pretty cool. The suits are reasonably priced at around
what youd pay for a standard room in a moderate hotel. Honestly I really dont like
the oversized props in the value resorts, sure its fun but I find it pretty tacky. I mean
there really is no elegant value resort because when I think of a Disney Resort I think
for Grand Floridian of Port Orleans because I think Disney Hotels are some of the
most elegant. Disney cant seem to build anything with out slapping a pre existing
Disney brand on it. What happened to being original I dont know maybe Im just
stupid.
