HvZ Returns for third year!

Members of the UOW Rotaract Club,

are once again, beginning to prepare for
their flagship event, Humans vs. Zombies,
which will take place at the University of
Wollongong main campus, on Saturday
April 4th, from 9:30am.

The Lord Mayor of Wollongong, Gordon Bradbery, with event

The event which attempts to simulate

a small scale zombie appocalypse, has
been has been extremely successful for
the group, grossing in excess of $3000,
winning various awards and, capturing
the imagination of thousands.

The club remains committed to using the event to promote

and support Rotary Interationals End Polio Now campaign,
which aims to riase much needed funds to erradicate the last
1% of polio cases world-wide.
Described by Pete Doran, the Clubs and Societies Program
coordinator at UOW, as one of the best events on Campus,
the unique event gives UOW students an opportunity to
get involved with student life, have a lot of fun and, raise
funds towards such an important cause, he said, going on to
describe the Rotaract club as one of UOWs most charitable
and active clubs.
Entering into its third year, the tagline, the event that wont
die, is becoming more and more apt. With a new generation

of club members continuing the event. Cameron McLeod, the current club President, has described watching
the event come together, as one of the highlights of his time in the club.

Watching a small group of dedicated volunteers come together and contribute to a life changing, international cause has been the highlight of my time as President of the UOW Rotaract Club. Not only is it amazing fun to be a part of the initiative, but it allows us to raise both awareness of Polio and fundraise to assist
in its eradication!, he said.
Rotary clubs across the globe made polio eradication their top priority in 1985, launching PolioPlus and
comitting an initial pledge of US$120 million. Since then Rotary has been at the forefront of the global polio
eradication effort, which has reduced polio endemic courntires from 125, in 1988, to just 3 today. Since
1985, Rotary clubs Internationally have contributed US$1.2 billion towards the cause and members have
logged countless volunteer hours to help immunize more than two billion children in 122 countries.

Overall, remarkable progress has been achieved in the fight against polio. Since 1988, the number of polio
cases has been reduced from 350,000 a year to fewer than 700 cases in 2011. The Americas were declared
free from polio in 1994, the Western Pacific region in 2000, and Europe in 2002.
A highly infectious disease, polio still strikes children mainly under the age of five in parts of Africa and South
Asia. Polio can cause paralysis and sometimes death. There is no cure for polio, but for as little as 60 cents
worth of oral vaccine, a child can be protected from the disease for life.

Humans vs Zombies was a great way to not only promote fun and friendship amongst young people but also
support the great work that Rotary is doing across the globe to try and eradicate Polio and the devastating
impact it has on young people and their families. The University of Wollongong Rotaract Club deserve a big
round of applause for their efforts in establishing this event - Ryan Park, MP for Keira.

It has been my absolute pleasure, as the Rotary sponsor to the UOW Rotaract Club, to be able to watch each
year as the club puts on a wonderful and fun day at the Univeristy of Wollongong, through its Humans vs
Zombies event, which combines a very worthwhile fundraising activity with a fantastic cause. Each year the
club has raised invalueable funds to assist with the eradication of polio throughout the world.
For every dollar this event raises, the Bill Gates Foundation donates $2. To date the UOW Rotaract club have
raised over $3,500, which means that they have in effect raised $10,500, where this amount will purchase
around 13,500 vaccinations for children throughout the world.
The UOW Rotaract club Past President, Aidan Simmons was the instigator in bringing this very worthwhile
activity to the Illawarra and he should be commended.
This is now an annual event and I hope that the proceeds will always be given to the Polio Plus program. Alfred Harley, OAM.
