The Pastimes of Lord Rma

brahman kena prakarea

r-narada uvaca - ri Nrada said; brahman - O brhmaa; kena in what; prakarea - way?; rama - Lord Rma; daarathi - the son of
Daaratha; svayam - personally; cakara - did; mokaam - the
liberation; kutra - in what?; yuge - yuga; gautama-yoita - of
Gautama Muni's wife.
ri Nrada said: O brhmaa, how and in what yuga did Lord
Rma, the son of Daaratha, grant liberation to Gautama Muni's wife?

ramavatara sukhada
samasena manoharam
kathayasva maha-bhaga
rotu kautuhala mama
ramavataram - the incarnation of Lord Rma; sukhadam - giving
happiness; samasena - in summary; manoharam - beautiful;

kathayasva - please tell; maha-bhaga - O very fortunate one; rotum to hear; kautuhalam - eagerness; mama - of me.
O very fortunate one, please briefly tell me about the Lord's
handsome and pleasing incarnation as Lord Rma.

tretaya ca mudanvita
r-narayaa uvaca - ri Nryaa i said; brahmaa - by
Brahma; prarthita - requested; viu - Lord Viu; jata - born;
daarathat - from King Daaratha; svayam - personally; kaualyayam in Kaualy; ca - and; bhagavan - the Supreme Personality of
Godhead; tretayam - in Treta-yuga; ca - and; mudanvita - blissful.
ri Nryaa i said: On the demigod Brahm's request, Lord
Viu, the blissful Supreme Personality of Godhead, took birth as the
son of Daaratha and Kaualy.

kaikeyya bharata caiva
rama-tulyo guena ca
lakmaa capi atrughna
sumitraya guarava
kaikeyyam - in Kaikaeyi; bharata - Bharata; ca - and; eva - indeed;
rama-tulya - equal to Rma; guena - in qualities; ca - and;
lakmaa - Lakmaa; ca - also; api - and; atrughna - atrughna;
sumitrayam - in Sumitr; guarava - an ocean of virtues.
Bharata, who was virtuous like Rma, became Kaikeyi's son.
Lakmaa and atrughna, who were oceans of virtue, became the
sons of Sumitr.

vivamitra-preta ca
r-rama ca sa-lakmaa
prayayau mithila ramya
sta-grahaa-hetave
vivamitra-preta - sent by Vivammitra; ca - and; r- rama ri Rma; ca - and; sa-lakmaa - with Lakmaa; prayayau - went;
mithilam - to Mithil; ramyam - beautiful; sta-grahaa-hetave - to
bring Sit.
Sent by Vivammitra Muni, Lord Rma and Lakmaa went to
beautiful Mithil City to gain the hand of Sit.

dva paaa-rupa ca
ramo vartmani kaminm
vivamitra ca papraccha
karaa jagad-vara
dva - seeing; paaa-rupam - a form of stone; ca - and; rama
- Lord Rma; vartmani - on the path; kaminm - beautiful woman;
vivamitram - Vivmitra; ca - and; papraccha - asked; karaam - the
reason; jagad-vara - the master of the universes.
Seeing a stone statue of a beautiful woman by the roadside, Lord
Rma, the master of the universes, asked Vivmitra about her.

ramasya vacana rutva
vivamitro maha-tapa
uvaca tatra dharmiho
rahasya sarvam eva ca
ramasya - of Lord Rma; vacanam - the words; rutva - hearing;
vivamitra - Vivmitra; maha-tapa - very austere; uvaca - said;

tatra - there; dharmiha - saintly; rahasyam - sacret; sarvam - all;


eva - indeed; ca - and.
Hearing Lord Rma's words, the saintly and austere sage
Vivmitra told Him the secret of the statue.

karaa tan-mukhac chrutva
ramo bhuvana-pavana
paspara padagulina
sa babhuva sa padmin
karaam - the reason; tan-mukhac - from his mouth; rutva hearing; rama - Lord Rma; bhuvana-pavana - the purifier of the
worlds; paspara - touched; padagulina - with His toe; sa - she;
babhuva - became; ca - and; padmin - a girl beautiful like a lotus
flower.
Hearing the story from the sage's mouth, Lord Rma, the purifier
of the worlds, touched the statue with His toe, and it suddenly
became a living woman beautiful like a lotus flower.

sa ramam aia ktva
prayayau bhart-mandiram
ubhaia dadau tasmai
bharya samprapya gautama
sa - she; ramam - Lord Rma; aiam - blessing; ktva - doing;
prayayau - went; bhart-mandiram - to her husband's house;
ubhaiam - blessing; dadau - gave; tasmai - to Him; bharyam - wife;
samprapya - attaining; gautama - Gautama Muni.
Blessing Lord Rma, the woman returned to her husband's home.
Regaining his wife, Gautama Muni also blessed Him.

rama ca mithila gatva


dhanur-bhaga ivasya ca
cakara pai-grahaa
staya caiva narada
rama - Lord Rma; ca - and; mithilam - to Mithil; gatva - going;
dhanur-bhagam - breaking the bow; ivasya - of Lord iva; ca - and;
cakara - did; pai-grahaam - takling the hand; staya - of Sit; ca and; eva - indeed; narada - O Nrada.
O Nrada, then Lord Rma went to Mithil, broke Lord iva's bow,
and gained Sit's hand.

ktva vivaha rajendro
bhgu-darpa nihatya ca
ayodhya prayayau ramya
kra-kautuka-magalai
ktva - doing; vivaham - wedding; rajendra - the great king;
bhgu- darpam - the pride of Paraurma; nihatya - breaking; ca - and;
ayodhyam - to Ayodhy; prayayau - went; ramyam - beautiful; krakautuka- magalai - with auspicious pastimes.
After marrying Sit and destroying Paraurma's pride, the great
king Lord Rma returned to beautiful Ayodhy, where He enjoyed
many auspicious pastimes.

raja putra npa kartu
iyea sa tu sadaram
sapta-trthodaka tura
anya muni-pugavan
raja - the king; putram - his son; npam - the king; kartum - to
make; iyea - went; sa - he; tu - indeed; sadaram - respectfully; sapta-

trthodakam - the waters of seven sacred rivers; turam - quickly;


anya - bringing; muni-pugavan - to the great sages.
Then, to prepare for his son's coronation, King Daaratha
respectfully gathered water from seven holy rivers and brought many
great sages to his city.

ktadhivasa r-rama
sarva-magala-samyutam
dva bharata-mata ca
kaikey oka-vihvala
ktadhivasam - the adhivsa ceremony; r-ramam - Lord Rma;
sarva-magala-samyutam - with all auspiciousness; dva - seeing;
bharata-mata - Bharata's mother; ca - and; kaikey - Kaikeyi; okavihvala - overwhelmed with grief.
Then, to prepare for Lord Rma's coronation, King Daaratha
performed the all-auspicious adhivsa ceremony. Seeing this,
Bharata's mother, Kaikeyi, became filled with grief.

varayam asa rajana
purvam ag-kta varam
ramasya vana-vasa ca
rajatva bharatasya ca
varayam asa - stopped; rajanam - the king; purvam - previous;
ag-ktam - accepted; varam - boon; ramasya - of Lord Rma; vana in the forest; vasam - residence; ca - and; rajatvam - kingship;
bharatasya - of Bharata; ca - and.
Kaikeyi stopped King Daaratha and, claiming a previously granted
boon, demanded that Lord Rma be exiled to the forest and Bharata
be crowned king.

vara datu maha-rajo
neyea prema-mohita
dharma-satya-bhavenaivovaca ramo npa sudh
varam - boon; datum - to give; maha-raja - the great king; na not; iyea - went; prema - with love; mohita - fainted; dharma religon; satya - truthfulness; bhavena - with the nature; eva - indeed;
uvaca - spoke; rama - Lord Rma; npam - to the king;
sudh - intelligent.
Without granting the boon, King Daaratha fell unconscious out of
love for his son. Then intelligent Lord Rma told him about the
importance of truthfulness and the rules of religion.

taaga-ata-danena
yat puya labhate nara
tato 'dhika ca labhate
vap-danena nicitam
r-rama uvaca - Lord Rma said; taaganena - by giving a
hundred ponds; yat - what; puyam - piety; labhate - attains; nara a person; tata - than that; adhikam - greater; ca - and; labhate attains; vap-danena - by giving a lake;
nicitam - ascertained.
Lord Rma said: By building a great lake a person attains the same
piety as if he had built a hundred small ponds.
Text 17
daa-vap-pradanena
yat puya labhate nara
tato 'dhika ca labhate
puya kanya-pradanata

daa-vap-pradanena - by giving ten lakes; yat - what; puyam piety; labhate - attains; nara - a person; tata - than that; adhikam more; ca - and; labhate - attains; puyam - piety; kanya- pradanata by giving a daughter.
By giving a daughter to a worthy husband a person attains the
same piety as if he had built ten great lakes.

daa-kanya-pradanena
yat puya labhate nara
tato 'dhika ca labhate
yajaikena naradhipa
daa-kanya-pradanena - by giving ten daughters; yat - what;
puyam - piety; labhate - attains; nara - a person; tata - than that;
adhikam - more; ca - and; labhate - attains; yaja-ekena - with one
yajna; naradhipa - O king.
By performing a single yaja a person attains the same piety as if
he had given ten daughters to worthy husbands.

dasa-yajena yat puya
labhate puya-kj jana
tato 'dhika ca labhate
putrasya-daranena ca
dasa-yajena - with ten yajnas; yat - what; puyam - piety; labhate
- attains; puya-kj - pious; jana - person; tata - thna that; adhikam
- more; ca - and; labhate - attains; putra - of a son; asya - of the face;
daranena - by the sight; ca - and.
By gazing at the face of a pious son a person attains the same
piety as if he had performed ten yajas.

Text 20
darane ata-putraa
yat puya labhate nara
tat puya labhate nuna
puyavan satya-palanat
darane - in the sight; ata-putraam - of a hundred sons; yat what; puyam - piety; labhate - attains; nara - a person; tat - that;
puyam - piety; labhate - attains; nunam - indeed; puyavan - pious;
satya- palanat - by speaking the truth.
By always speaking the truth a person attains the same piety as if
he had gazed at a hundred pious sons.

na hi satyat paro dharmo
nantat pataka param
na hi gaga-sama trtha
na deva kesvat para
na - not; hi - indeed; satyat - than truthfulness; para - better;
dharma - religion; na - not; antat - than lying; patakam - sin; param
- greater; na - not; hi - indeed; gaga - to the Gag; samam - equal;
trtham - holy place; na - not; deva - deity; kesvat - than Lord Ka;
para - better.
No religious principle is better than truthfulness. No sin is wore
than lying. No place is more sacred than the Gag. No deity is above
Lord Ka.
Text 22
nasti dharmat paro bandhur
nasti dharmat para dhanam
dharmat priya para ko va
sva-dharma raka yatnata

na - not; asti - is; dharmat - than religion; para - better; bandhu friend; na - not; asti - is; dharmat - than religon; param - better;
dhanam - wealth; dharmat - than religion; priya - dear; para - more;
ka - who?; va - or; sva-dharmam - own religious principles; raka protect; yatnata - carefully.
No friend more dear than righteousness. No wealth is more
precious than righteousness. What is more dear than righteousness?
Carefully stay on the path of righteousness.
Text 23
sva-dharme rakite tata
avat sarvatra magalam
yaasya su-pratiha ca
pratapa pujana param
sva-dharme - own religious principles; rakite - protected; tata - O
father; avat - always; sarvatra - everywhere; magalam auspiciousness; yaasyam - fame; su-pratiha - a high position; ca and; pratapa - power; pujanam - worship; param - great.
O father, when one follows, always and everywhere, the path of
righteousness, he attains auspiciousness, fame, an exalted post,
power, and respect from others.

caturdaabda dharmea
tyaktva gha-sukha bhraman
vana-vasa kariyami
satyasya palanaya te
caturdaa - fourteen; abdam - years; dharmea - by religion; tyaktva
- renouncing; gha-sukham - the happiness of home; bhraman wandering; vana - in the forest; vasam - residence; kariyami - I will
do; satyasya - of truthfulness; palanaya - to protect; te - of you.
I will leave the happiness of My home. For fourteen years I will
wander in the forest to protect the truthfulness of your word.

Text 25
ktva satya ca apatha
icchayanicchayathava
na kuryat palana yo hi
bhasmanta tasya sutakam
ktva - doing; satyam - turthfulness; ca - and; apatham - promise;
icchaya - voluntarily; anicchaya - involuntarily; athava - or; na - not;
kuryat - may do; palanam - protection; ya - one who; hi - indeed;
bhasmantam - into ashes; tasya - of him; sutakam - the birth.
One who voluntarily or involuntarily breaks his promised Lord
burns his life to ashes.
Text 26
kumbhpake ca pacati
yavac candra-divakarau
tato muko bhavet kuh
manava sapta-janmasu
kumbhpake - in hell; ca - and; pacati - burns; yavac - as long as;
candra-divakarau - teh sun and the moon; tata - then; muka - a
dumb man; bhavet - becomes; kuh - a leper; manava - human;
sapta-janmasu - for seven births.
He burns in hell for as long as the sun and moon shine in the sky.
For seven births he is deaf and dumb. For seven births he is a leper.

ity evam uktva r-ramo
vidhaya valkala jaam
prayayau ca maharaye
staya lakmaena ca

ity evam - thus; uktva - speaking; r-rama - Lord Rma; vidhaya


- placing; valkalam - a garment of tree-bark; jaam - matted hair;
prayayau - went; ca - and; maharaye - into the forest; staya - with
Sit; lakmaena - with Lakmaa; ca - and.
After speaking these words, Lord Rma dressed in tree bark,
matted His hair, and went deep into the forest with Sit and
Lakmaa.

putra-okan maha-rajas
tatyaja sva-tanu mune
palanaya pitu satya
ramo babhrama kanane
putra - for his son; okat - out of grief; maha-raja - the great king;
tatyaja - abandoned; sva-tanum - his body; mune - O sage; palanaya for potection; pitu - of the father; satyam - of the truthfulness;
rama - Lord Rma; babhrama - wandered; kanane - in the forest.
O sage, King Daaratha died of grief for his son. Meanwhile Lord
Rma wandered in the forest to preserve the truthfulness of His
father's word.
Texts 29 and 30
kalantare maharaye
bhagin ravaasya ca
bhramant kanane ghore
bhratra sardha su-kautukat
dadara rama kulaa
kamarta rakas tada
pulakacita-sarvag
murcham apa smarea ca
kalantare - in the course of time; maharaye - in the great forest;
bhagin - the sister; ravaasya - of Ravaa; ca - and; bhramant -

wandering; kanane - in the forest; ghore - terrible; bhratra - her


brother; sardham - with; su-kautukat - happily;
dadara - saw; ramam - Lord Rma; kulaa - unchaste; kamarta tortured by lust; rakas - demonness; tada - then; pulakacitasarvag - her bodily hairs erect; murcham - the state of being
overcome; apa - arttained; smarea - with lust; ca - and.
Long after this, as she was wandering in the terrible forest with her
brother, Rvaa's sister, rpaakh, happily gazed on Lord Rma.
The unchaste demonness was at once tormented with lust. The hairs
of her body stood erect with excitement.

r-rama-nikaa gatva
sa-smitovaca kamuk
avad-yauvana-samyuktati-prauha kama-durmada
r-rama-nikaam - the vicinity of Lord Rma; gatva - going; sasmita - smiling; uvaca - spoke; kamuk - lusty; avat - eternal;
yauvana - youth; samyukta - endowed; ati-prauha - bold; kamadurmada - overcome with lust.
Smiling with lust, always youthful rpaakh boldly approached
Lord Rma and spoke to Him.

urpaakhovaca
he rama he ghana-yama
rupa-dhama guanvita
bhavanurakta vanita
ma ghaa su-nirjane
urpaakha uvaca - rpaakh said; he - O; rama - Lord Rma; he
- O; ghana-yama - dark like a monsoon cloud; rupa-dhama - O abode
of handsomeness; guanvita - O virtuous one; bhavanuraktam - filled
with love; vanitam - woman; mam - me; ghaa - please accept; sunirjane - in a secluded place.
rpaakh said: O Rma dark like a monsoon cloud, O abode of
handsomeness, O virtuous one, I have fallen in love with You. Please
take me to a secluded place and accept me.

Text 33
rutva urpaakha-vakya
dharma sasmtya dharmika
uvaca madhura vakya
apa-bhta ca narada
rutva - hearing; urpaakha-vakyam - rpaakh's words;
dharmam - piety; sasmtya - remembering; dharmika - pious; uvaca
- spoke; madhuram - sweet; vakyam - words; apa-bhta - afraid of
being cursed; ca - and; narada - O Nrada.
Hearing rpaakh's words, Lord Rma remembered the path of
righteousness. Afraid that she would curse Him, He spoke sweetly.
Text 34
r-rama uvaca
amba mata sa-bharyo 'ha
abharya gaccha me 'nujam
bhajet priya-jana dukham
itara ca sukhalayam
r-rama uvaca - Lord Rma said; amba - mother; mata - mother;
sa- bharya - with a wife; aham - I am; abharyam - without a wife;
gaccha - go; me - of Me; anujam - to the younger brother; bhajet may worship; priya-janam - beloved; dukham - suffering; itaram otherwise; ca - and; sukhalayam - the abode of happiness.
Lord Rma said: Mother, mother, I am a married man. Go to My
younger brother. He is not married. If you worship a married man you
will not find happiness, but if you worship a man who is not married
you will find him the abode of all happinesses.
Text 35
ramasya vacana rutva
prayayau lakmaa muda
dadara lakmaa anta
kanta ca lakaanvitam
ramasya - of Lord Rma; vacanam - the words; rutva - hearing;
prayayau - went; lakmaam - to Lakmaa; muda - happily; dadara

- saw; lakmaam - Lakmaa; antam - peaceful; kantam handsome; ca - and; lakaanvitam - filled with all virtues.
Hearing Lord Rma's words, rpaakh happily went to
Lakmaa. Gazing at Lakmaa, she could see that He was
handsome, peaceful, and filled with all virtues.
Text 36
ma bhajasva maha-bhagety
uvaca ca puna puna
lakmaas tad-vaca rutva
tam uvaca kutuhalat
mam - me; bhajasva - worship; maha-bhaga - O fortunate one; iti thus; uvaca - said; ca - and; puna - again; puna - and again;
lakmaa - Lakmaa; tad-vaca - her words; rutva - hearing; tam to her; uvaca - spoke; kutuhalat - happily.
Again and again rpaakh begged, O very fortunate one,
please worship me." Hearing her words, Lakmaa cheerfully spoke to
her.
Text 37
r-lakmaa uvaca
vihaya rama sarvea
he muhe dasam icchasi
sta-das ca mat-patn
sta-daso 'ham eva ca
r-lakmaa uvaca - ri Lakmaa said; vihaya - leaving; ramam
- Lord Rma; sarveam - the master of all; he - O; muhe - fool;
dasam - servant; icchasi - you desire; sta-das - a maidservant of
Sit; ca - and; mat-patn - My wife; sta-dasa - a servant of Sit;
aham - I; eva - indeed; ca - and.
ri Lakmaa said: Fool, I am only a servant. I am a servant of
Sit, and she who would be My wife will also serve Sit. Why do you
reject Lord Rma, who is the master of all, and place your desires
upon Me?

Text 38
bhava sta-sapatntva
gaccha rama mad-varam
tava putro bhaviyami
staya ca yatha sat
bhava - become; sta-sapatntvam - the co-wife of Sit; gaccha go; ramam - to Lord Rma; mad-varam - My master; tava - of you;
putra - the son; bhaviyami - I will be; staya - of Sit; ca - and;
yatha - as; sat - chaste.
Go to My master, Lord Rma, marry Him and become Sit's rival. O
saintly one, as I am Sit's son I will be your son also.
Text 39
lakmaasya vaca rutva
kamena hta-manasa
uvaca lakmaa muha
uka-kahoha-taluka
lakmaasya - of Lakmaa; vaca - the words; rutva - hearing;
kamena - with lust; hta-manasa - her heart overcome; uvaca - spoke;
lakmaam - to Lakmaa; muha - bewildered; uka-kahohataluka - her throat, lips, and palate dried-up.
Hearing Lakmaa's words, rpaakh became bewildered. Her
heart filled with lust and her throat, lips, and palate dry, she spoke to
Him.

urpaakhovaca
yadi tyajasi ma muha
kamat svayam upasthitam
yuvayo ca vipatti ca
bhaviyati na saaya
urpaakhovaca - rpaakh said; yadi - if; tyajasi - You abandon;
mam - me; muha - O fool; kamat - out of desire; svayam - personally;
upasthitam - staying; yuvayo - of You both; ca - and; vipatti calamity; ca - and; bhaviyati - will be; na - no; saaya - doubt.

rpaakh said: I come to You of my own accord. Fool, if You


reject me, the two of You will suffer a great calamity. Of this there is
no doubt.

brahma ca mohin tyaktva
vive 'pujyo babhuva sa
rambha-apena daka ca
chaga-muo babhuva sa
brahma - Brahm; ca - and; mohinm - Mohini; tyaktva abandoning; vive - in the world; apujya - not worshiped; babhuva bnecame; sa - he; rambha - of Rambh; apena - by the curse;
daka - Daka; ca - and; chaga-mua - the head of a goat;
babhuva - became; sa - he.
Brahm rejected Mohini. The result was that now no one in the
world worships Brahm. Rambh cursed Daka. The result was that
Daka had to lose his head and accept a goat's head in its place.

svar-vaidya corva-apad
yaja-bhaga-vivarjita
rupa-hna kuvera ca
mena-apena lakmaa
svar-vaidya - the Advini-Kumaras; ca - and; urva-apat - by
Urvasi's curse; yaja-bhaga-vivarjita - bereft of a protion in the
yajnas; rupa-hna - ugly; kuvera - Kuvera; ca - and; mena-apena by Mena's curse; lakmaa - O Lakmaa.
O Lakmaa, it was Urvai's curse that took away the Avinikumra's portion of the yajas. It was Men's curse that made Kuvera
ugly.

kamo ghtac-apena
babhuva bhasmasat ivat
balir madalasa-apad
bhraa-rajyo babhuva ha

kama - Kamadeva; ghtac-apena - by Ghrtaci's curse; babhuva


- became; bhasmasat - ashes; ivat - by Lord iva; bali - Bali;
madalasa-apat - by Madalasa's curse; bhraa-rajya - lost his
kingdom; babhuva - became; ha - indeed.
It was Ghtci's curse that made Lord iva burn Kmadeva to
ashes. It was Madlas's curse that made Bali Mahrja lose his
kingdom.

apena mitrakeya ca
hta-bharyo bhaspati
mama apat tatha ramo
hta-bharyo bhaviyati
apena - by the curse; mitrakeya - of Mitrakesi; ca - and; htabharya - wife was abducted; bhaspati - Brhaspati; mama - of me;
apat - by the curse; tatha - so; rama - Lord Rma; hta-bharya abducted wife; bhaviyati - will be.
It was Mitrakei's curse that caused Bhaspati's wife to be
abducted. Now my curse will cause Rma's wife to be abducted also.
Text 45
kamatura yauvana-stha
bharya svayam upasthitam
na tyajed dharma-bhta ca
ruta madhyandine pura
iti tyaktva vipad-grasta
paratra naraka vrajet
kamaturam - totrmented by lust; yauvana-stham - young;
bharyam - wife; svayam - personally; upasthitam - approasched; na not; tyajet - should reject; dharma-bhta - afraid of religion; ca - and;
rutam - heard; madhyandine - in the Madhyandina-sruti; pura previously; iti - thus; tyaktva - rejecting; vipad-grasta - grabbed by
calamity; paratra - in another place; narakam - to hell; vrajet - may
go.
A person who fears to disobey the rules of religion should never
reject a passionate young woman who voluntarily approaches him.
This I have heard in the Madhyandina-ruti. If he rejects her, calamity
grabs him. In the next life he goes to hell.

rutva urpaakha-vakya
ardha-candrea lakmaa
ciccheda nasika tasya
kura-dharea llaya

yaja to Lord iva, a yaja that will stop all

The yaja called Dhanur-yaja (the yaja of the bow), where
abundant food and charity are distributed, ends all nightmares and

In the past Lord iva gave this bow to Nandivara. Saintly
Nandivara performed the yaja, became perfect, and then gave the
bow to Bsura.

Bsura performed the yaja, became perfect, and at Pukaratirtha gave the bow to Paraurma. Paraurma, who is an ocean of

O king, that very strong bow is a thousand hands long and ten
hands thick. It was built according to Lord iva's wish.

When placed in this bow, the pupata arrow becomes invincible.


Nothing can stop it. Only Lord Nryaa can stop it.

In this yaja you should worship both Lord iva and his bow. You
should invite everyone and perform this yaja at once.

The demigod Brahm resides at the root of this bow. Lord

Akrra remembered Lord Ka's lotus feet again and again. In his

dnovaca priya dine
sukha-sambhoga-matrea - with enjoyment; yayau - went; nidram to sleep; ca - and; radhika - Rdh; dva - seeing; svapnam - dream;

beloved; dine - in the day.
After enjoying many pastimes, ri Rdh fell asleep, saw
something in a dream, and awakened in the day. Distraught, She
spoke to Her lover.

Then a splendid jewel mirror suddenly turned black like kajjala, fell
from My hand, and broke into many pieces.

hara - necklace; me - of Me; ratna-saraam - of precious jewels;
chinna - broken; bhutva - becoming; ca - and; vakasa - of the

dhara-tale - to the ground.
Then the precious jewel necklace on My breast broke apart. Then
My lotus flower became black and fell to the ground.

rudanti ca kaa kaam
saudha-puttalika - the deities in thr temple; sarva - all; ntyanti dance; ca - and; hasanti - laugh; ca - and; asphotayanti - clap hands;
gayanti - sing; rudanti - weep; ca - and; kaam - moment; kaam after moment.
Then the demigods' deities in the temple began to dance. One
moment laughed, another moment they clapped their hands and
sang, and the next moment they wept.

Then I saw a fearful great black wheel rising and falling as it
turned in the sky.

Frightened, overwhelmed with grief, and Her lips, throat, and
palate dry, Goddess Rdh spoke these words and fell at Lord Ka's
feet.

bodhayam asa tat kaam
rutva - hearing; svapnam - the dream; jagannatha - the master
of the universes; devm - to the goddess; ktva - doing; sva-vakasi to His chest; adhyatmikena yogena - with the transcendental
knowledge of yoga; bodhayam asa - enlightened; tat - that; kaam moment.
Hearing of this dream, Lord Ka, the master of the universes,
held Goddess Rdh to His chest and taught Her the science of
spiritual enlightenment.

Enlightened by Lord Ka, Goddess Rdh became free of grief.

pastime lake.

ri Nryaa i said: Seeing that beautiful and passionate Rdh


was troubled with the prospect of losing His company, Lord Ka
became filled with love for Her. He held Her to His chest and took Her
to a pastime lake.

An ocean of mercy, Lord Ka mercifully enjoyed pastimes with
Goddess Rdh. They were like a sapphire and a topaz together.

Rdh. Lord Ka, the jewel of the rsa dance, the king of they who
taste nectar, dove into a beautiful jewel-ocean
of rsa dance pastimes.

satyam - truth; virate - stopped; na - not; manorathe - desire.
Then ri Rdh, the queen of the rsa dance, spoke to Lord Ka,
the king of the rsa dance. Although Their amorous pastimes had
stopped, ri Rdh's desires had not.

ri Rdh said: O master, when You are present I blossom with
happiness. When You are gone I wilt and die. When You are present I
am like a flower happy at the rising of the sun.

When You are present I am like a lamp shining at night. When You

When You are present I am like a splendid full moon. When You are

padmin - a lake of lotuses; yatha - like.
When You are present I am like a sacred fire fed with oblations of
ghee. When You are gone I am like a lotus-lake barren and empty in
the wintertime.

cinta - of anxiety; jvara - fever; jara - old age; grasta - grabbed;

- gripped by darkness; dhara - the earth; yatha - like.
When You are gone I am seized by a fever of despair. I am like the
earth when it is seized by darkness after both sun and moon have set.

When You are gone My youthful beauty perishes. I am like the
stars that fade at sunrise.

When You, the king of the rsa dance, are present, the gopis
become beautiful. They become like a gold necklace set with a
glittering jewel.

O king of Vraja, when You are present the great kings shine with
great splendor. They become like many stars shining beside the moon
in the sky.

O son of Nanda, when You are present Nanda and Yaod become
beautiful. They become like trees with fruit-laden branches.

O king of Gokula, when You are present the people of Gokula
become beautiful. They shine with happiness like loyal subjects in the
presence of their king.

svarge - in Svarga; amaravatau - in Amaravati.

O king of the rsa dance, when You are present the rsa dance
becomes beautiful and charming. It shines like Svargaloka's
Amarvati City in the presence of Indra.

balavan kear yatha
vndavanasya - of Vndvana; vkaam - of the trees; tvam - You;
ca - and; obha - beauty; pati - master; gati - goal; anyeam - of
others; ca - and; vananam - forests; ca - and; balavan - powerful;
kear - lion; yatha - like.
You are the master, the glory, and the goal of Vndvana's trees.
To them You are like a lion, the strongest of all who live in the forest.

kroant vyakula yatha
tvaya - You; vina - without; yaoda - Yaod; ca - and;
nimagna - plunged; oka-sagare - in an ocean of grief; aprapya - not

When You are gone Yaod is plunged in an ocean of grief. She
becomes like a cow weeping over a lost calf.

yatha dhanya-samuhaka
andolayanti - shakes; nandasya - of Nanda; praa - the life breath;
dagdham - burned; ca - and; manasam - the mind; tvaya - You; vina -

without; tapta-patre - in a pot on a fire; yatha - as; dhanya-samuhaka


- rice.
When You are gone Nanda's life trembles. His mind and heart
become like rice boiling in a pot.

O Nrada, as a sharp ax cuts trees, so spiritual knowledge cuts
down all illusions.

At Pukara-tirtha, for a hundred lifetimes of Indra, during the
Padma-kalpa, the demigod Brahm performed severe austerities.
Seeing that Brahm was unable to move and was so emaciated that
his body was only bones, Lord Ka, who is an ocean of mercy,
mercifully and respectfully taught him part of this spiritual knowledge.

O Nrada, when Sanat-kumra performed austerities for a hundred
lifetimes of Indra, Lord Ka taught him a part of this knowledge,
and when Lord ea performed severe austerities for a very long
time, Lord Ka taught Him a part of this knowledge also.

To Kapila Muni, who performed long and severe austerities in the


Himalayas, at Pukara-tirtha, and on the sun planet, Lord Ka

Please listen and I will tell you what Lord Ka, who is an ocean of
mercy, said to the grieving Rdh at that beautiful pastime-lake.

Seeing that sweet Rdh was dejected, Lord Ka held Her to His
chest. Then Lord Ka, the guru of the yogis, taught Her something
of the spiritual science of yoga.

When the pot is broken, the reflection of the sun or the moon in a
pot of water is no longer seen. In the same way, when the karmic
reactions of the individual living entity are broken, he returns to Me.

In the world of ivaloka You expand as Lord iva's divine consort,
who is the root of matter. Because she killed a demon named Durga,

r-narayaa uvaca - ri Nryaa i said; ktva - doing; kram
- pastimes; samutthaya - rising; pupa-talpat - from the couch of
flowers; puratana - the ancient Supreme Personality of Godhead;
nidritam - asleep; praa-sadm - dear as life; bodhayam asa awakened; tat - that; kaam - moment.
ri Nryaa i said: When the pastimes came to an end, the
Supreme Personality of Godhead rose from the couch of flowers and
wakened His sleeping beloved, who is more dear to Him than life.

anta ca madhusudana

vastracalena - with the corner of the garment; sasktya - making;


ktva - doing; tan-nirmalam - clean; mukham - face; uvaca - spoke;
madhuram - sweet; antam - peaceful; antam - peaceful; ca - and;
madhusudana - Lord Ka.
Wiping Her face with the edge of His garment, Lord Ka spoke
sweet and gentle words to gentle ri Rdh.

r-ka uvaca - ri Ka said; ayi - O; tiha - stay; kaam - a
momwnt; rase - in the rsa dance; rasevari - O queen of the rsa
dance; uci-smite - O girl with the splendid smile; vraja - go;
vndavanam - to Vndvana; va - or; api - also; vrajam - Vraja; vraja go; vrajevari - O queen of Vraja.
Lord Ka said: O girl with the beautiful smile, O queen of the
rsa dance, please stay for a moment in the rsa dance circle, and
then, O queen of Vraja, You may go to Vraja or Vndvana.

sarvatra grama-devata
rasadhihat-dev - the queen of the rsa dance; tvam - You;
rasam - the rsa dance; rase - in the rsa dance; kuru - please do;
kaam - a moment; grame - in village; grame - after village; yatha as; santi - are; sarvatra - everywhere; grama-devata - the village
deities.

You are the queen of the rsa dance. For a moment please preside
over a rsa dance in this place, as the local deities preside over the
activities in village after village.

priyali-nivahai - many dear friends; sardham - with; kaam - a
moment; candana-kananam - a sandal grove; kaam - a moment; va
- or; campaka-vanam - a campaka grove; gaccha - go; va - or; tiha stay; sundari - O beautiful one.

With Your dear friends go for a while to the sandalwood grove, or


the campaka grove, or stay here, O beautiful one.

kaam - for a moment; gham - home; ca - and; yasyami - I will

moment; mam - to Me; praa-vallabhe - O girl more dear than life.
I must return home for a while. I have some urgent business there.
O girl more dear than life, please happily allow Me to go.

kutra sthatu kama priye

praadhihat-dev - the ruler of My life; tvam - You;


praa - life; ca - and; tvayi - in You; santi - are; me - of Me; pra living; vihaya - abandoning; praan - life; ca - and; kutra - where?;
sthatum - to stay; kama - able; priye - O beloved.
You rule My life. My life stays in You. O dear one, if I relinquish My
life, how can I live?

tvayi - in You; ma - My; manasam - heart and mind; avat - always;
tvam - You; me - of Me; sasara-vasana - the desire; tvatta - than You;
mama - of Me; priya - dear; na - not; asti - is; tvam - You; eva - indeed;
akarat - than Lord iva; priya - dear.
My heart and mind reside in You. You are My desire. No one is more
dear to Me than You. You are more dear to Me than even Lord iva
himself.

tva ca praadhika sati
ity uktva ta samaliya
bhagavan gantum udyata
praa - life; me - of Me; akara - Lord iva; satyam - in truth;
tvam - You; ca - and; praadhika - more than life; sati - O saintly one;
iti - thus; uktva - speaking; tam - Her; samaliya - embracing;
bhagavan - the Supreme Personality of Godhead; gantum - to go;
udyata - prepared.
Lord iva is My very life, but You, O beautiful one, are more than
life to Me.
After speaking these words, the Supreme Personality of Godhead
embraced ri Rdh and then prepared to depart.

sarvaja sarva-sadhana
atma pata ca sarvea
sarvopakara-karaka
akrura - of Akrra; agamanam - the arrival; jatva - knowing;
sarvaja - all-knowing; sarva-sadhana - all-powerful; atma - the
Supreme Personality of Godhead;
pata - the protector; ca - and; sarveam - of all; sarvopakara-karaka the benefactor of all.
Lord Ka, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the all-powerful
and all-knowing protector and benefactor of all, understood that
Akrra had already come to Vndvana.

utsuka bhinna-manasam
uvaca radhika dev
hdayena viduyata
dva - seeing; tam - Him; eva - indeed; gacchantam - coming;
utsukam - eager; bhinna-manasam - in His heart prepared to depart;
uvaca - spoke; radhika dev - Goddess Rdh; hdayena - with a
heart; viduyata - trembling.
Observing that Lord Ka had decided to depart, with a trembling
heart Goddess Rdh spoke.

beloveds; mama - of Me; he - O; ka - Ka; he - O; rama-natha master of the goddess of fortune; vrajea - O king of Vraja; ma don't; vraja - go; vrajam - to Vraja.
ri Rdh said: O master, O best of lovers, You are most dear to
Me. O Ka, O master of the goddess of fortune, O king of Vraja,
please don't go to Vraja.

payami bhinna-manasam

gata saubhagyam eva ca
adhuna - now; tvam - You; praa-natha - O master of My life;
payami - I see; bhinna-manasam - decided to go; gate - gone; tvayi when You are; mama - of Me; prema - the love; gatam - gone;
saubhagyam - good fortune; eva - indeed; ca - and.
O master of My life, I see that You have decided to depart. When
You go You will no longer love Me. Then My good fortune will also be
gone.

kva yasi ma vinikipya
gabhre oka-sagare
viraha-vyakula dna
tvayy eva \caraagatam
kva - where?; yasi - You go; mam - Me; vinikipya - leaving;
gabhre - deep; \coka-sagare - in an ocean of grief; viraha - by
absence; vyakulam - tormented; dnam - poor; tvayi - in You; eva indeed; \caraagatam - taken shelter.
Where must You go? You will throw Me into a deep ocean of grief.
Although I have taken shelter of You and surrendered to You, You will
torment Me by leaving.

yasyami kananantaram

na - not; yasyami - I will go; puna - again; geham - home; yasyami
- I will go; kananantaram - to another forest; ka - O Ka; ka O Ka; iti - thus; ka - O Ka; iti - thus; gayam - singing; gayam
- and singing; diva-ni\cam - day and night.
I will not return home. I will go to another forest. Day and night I
will sing, Ka! Ka! Ka!"

na yasyamy athavaraya
yasyami kama-sagare
tatra tvat-kamana ktva
tyakyami ca kalevaram
na - not; yasyami - I will go; athava - or; arayam - to a forest;
yasyami - I will go; kama-sagare - in the ocean of desires; tatra - there;
tvat - of You; kamanam - the desire; ktva - doing; tyakyami - I will
abandon; ca - and; kalevaram - this body.
Perhaps I will not go to another forest. Perhaps I will go to the
ocean of desires. There, desiring only You, I will give up this body.

yatha - as; aka\ca - the sky; yatha - as; atma - the Self; ca - and;
yatha - as; candra - the moon; yatha - as; ravi - the sun; tatha - so;
tvam - You; yasi - go; mat-par\cve - to My side; nibaddha - bound;
vasana - by the garment; acale - to the corner.

As the sky, the sun, the moon, the air, and the Supersoul always
follow Me, may You always follow Me, always by My side, the corners
of Our garments tied together.

ktva me dna-vatsala
na yukta hi parityaktu
dna ma araagatam
adhuna - now; yasi - You go; nairayam - hopeless despair; ktva creating; me - of Me; dna-vatsala - O Lord affectionate to the poor
and suffering; na - not; yukta - right; hi - indeed; parityaktum - to
leave; dnam - poor; mam - Me; araagatam - taken shelter and
surrendered to You.
O master who loves the poor, You will push Me into despair and
then depart. It is not right for You abandon unhappy Me, who have
taken shelter of You and surrendered to You.

yat-pada-padma dhyayante
brahma-viu-ivadaya
tva mayaya gopa-vea
katha janami matsar
yat-pada-padmam - whose lotus feet; dhyayante - meditate;
brahma-viu-ivadaya - headed by Brahm, Viu, and iva; tvam You; mayaya - with Your potency; gopa-veam - the appearance of a
gopa; katham - why?; janami - I know; matsar - envious.
How can I, an envious woman, understand You, whose Yogamy
potency makes You seem an ordinary gopa, You, on whose lotus feet
the demigods headed by Brahm, Viu, and iva meditate?

aparadha-sahasrakam
yad ukta pati-bhavena
cabhimanena tat kama

ktam - don; yat - what; deva - O Lord; durtam - sin; aparadhasahasrakam - a thousand offenses; yat - what; uktam - spoken; patibhavena - with the idea of being a lover; ca - and; abhimanena - with
pride; tat - that; kama - please forgive.
O master, please forgive the thousand offensive, arrogant words I
spoke, thinking You were only My lover.

cur-bhuta ca mad-garvo
dur-bhuto manoratha
vijatam atma-saubhagya
kim anyat kathayami te
cur-bhuta - crushed into pieces; ca - and; mad-garva - My
pride; dur-bhuta - thrown far away; manoratha - desire; vijatam known; atma-saubhagyam - My own ood fortune; kim - what?; anyat other; kathayami - I say; te - to You.
Now My pride is crushed into pieces. Now desires are thrown far
away. Now I know how fortunate I was. What more can I say to You?

jatva garga-mukhac chrutva
mohita tava mayaya
tva ca vaktu na aknomi
prema va bhakti-paata
jatva - understand; garga-mukhat - from Garga Muni's mouth;
rutva - hearing; mohita - bewildered; tava - of You; mayaya - by the
potency; tvam - You; ca - and; vaktum - 6to say; na - not; aknomi able; prema - with love; va - or; bhakti-paata - with ropes of love.
Overcome with love, bound with ropes of love, and bewildered by
Your Yogamy even though I had heard the truth from Garga Muni's
mouth, I had no power to speak to You in the right way.

yasi cen ma parityajya
sa-kalako bhaviyasi
tvat-putra-pautra nayanti
brahma-kopanalena ca

yasi - You go; cet - if; mam - to Me; parityajya - leaving; sa-kalaka
- contaminated with sin; bhaviyasi - You will be; tvat-putra - Your
sons; pautra - and grandchildren; nayanti - will perish; brahmakopanalena - by the fire of brhmaa's anger; ca - and.
If You abandon Me You will become contaminated with sin. The fire
of a brhmaa's curse will kill Your children and grandchildren.

kaa yuga-ata manye
tva vina praa-vallabham
katha atabda tva tyaktva
bibharmi jvana prabho
kaam - a moment; yuga-atam - a hundsred yugas; manye - I
think; tvam - You; vina - without; praa-vallabham - more dear than
life; katham - why?; atabdam - a hundred years; tvam - You; tyaktva leaving; bibharmi - I maintain; jvanam - live; prabha - O Lord.
You are more dear to Me than life. Without You I will think each
moment is a hundred yugas. O master, how can I stay alive without
You for a hundred years?

ity uktva radhika kopat
papata dhara-tale
murcha samprapa sahasa
jahara cetana mune
iti - thus; uktva - saying; radhika - Rdh; kopat - angrily;
papata - fell; dhara-tale - to the ground; murcham - fainting;
samprapa - attained; sahasa - at once; jahara - lost; cetanam consciousness; mune - O sage.
After angrily speaking these words, ri Rdh suddenly fainted and
fell to the ground.

kas ta murchita dva

kpaya ca kpa-nidhi
cetana karayitva ca
vasayam asa vakasi
ka - Lord Ka; tam - Her; murchitam - fainted; dva seeing; kpaya - with mercy; ca - and; kpa-nidhi - an ocean of
mercy; cetanam - consciousness; karayitva - causing; ca - and;
vasayam asa - held; vakasi - to His chest.
Seeing that Rdh had fallen unconscious, Lord Ka, who is an
ocean of mercy, mercifully revived Her and held Her to His chest.
Text 27
bodhayam asa vividha
yogai oka-vikhaalai
tathapi oka tyaktu ca
na aaka uci-smita
bodhayam asa - awakened; vividham - various; yogai - with yoga;
oka-vikhaalai - breaking grief; tathapi - still; okam - grief;
tyaktum - to abandon; ca - and; na - not; aaka - was able; uci-smita
- the girl with the beautiful smile.
Then Lord Ka enlightened Her with many spiritual teachings
meant to break grief. Still, Rdh with the beautiful smile could not
give up Her grief.

samanya-vastu-vileo
na okaya kevalam
dehatmano ca viccheda
kva sukhaya prakalpate
samanya - general; vastu - things; vilea - absence; nam - of
people; okaya - for grief; kevalam - only; deha - of the body; atmano
- and soul; ca - and; viccheda - separation; kva - where>; sukhaya for happiness; prakalpate - is proper.
Even the loss of ordinary things makes people unhappy. How can
the soul's loss of the body bring happiness?

na yayau tatra divase
vraja-rajo vraja prati
kra-sarovarabhyasa
prayayau radhaya saha
na - not; yayau - went; tatra - there; divase - day; vraja-raja - the
king of Vraja; vrajam - to Vraja; prati - to; kra - pastime; sarovara lake; abhyasam - effort; prayayau - went; radhaya - Rdh; saha with.
On that day Lord Ka, the king of Vraja, did not return to Vraja.
Instead He took Rdh to a pastime lake.

cakara ca taya saha
vijahau viraha-jvala
rase rasevar muda
tatra - there; gatva - going; puna - again; kram - pastimes;
cakara - did; ca - and; taya - Her; saha - with; vijahau - abandoned;
viraha - of separation; jvalam - the fire; rase - in the rsa dance;
rasevar - the queen of the Rdh; muda - happily.
There He again enjoyed pastimes with Her. Enjoying in the rsa
dance, ri Rdh, the queen of the rsa dance, escaped the flames of
her imminent separation from Lord Ka.

pupa-candana-carcita
pupa-candana-talpe ca
tasthau rahasi narada
radha - Rdh; sa - She; svamina - master; sardham - with; pupacandana-carcita - anounted with flowers and sandal paste; pupacandana-talpe - on a couch of flowers and sandal paste; ca - and;
tasthau - stayed; rahasi - in secluded place; narada - O Nrada.
O Nrada, in that secluded place ri Rdh, who was decorated
with flowers and anointed with sandal paste, stayed with Her lover,

Lord Ka, on a couch decorated with flowers and anointed with


sandal paste.
