FIELDWORK #1
LAYING OUT OF SIMPLE CURVE

I.

OBJECTIVE

To layout a simple horizontal curve using method of deflection angles with all points
on the curve visible from point of curve.
II.

PROBLEM

Given the data below, layout a simple curve with all points on the curve visible from
point of curvature and prepare a field note containing the details of every station in
the curve.
Given:
Back Tangent Azimuth = 270
Forward Tangent Azimuth = 302
Station V = 13 + 995m
Degree of Curve = 4
Length of full station = 1.5 m
III.
INSTRUMENTS
Transit
Tape
Stakes
Flag markers or chaining pins
Paper for making station points
IV.
PROCEDURE
1. Set the instrument at station P.C.
1 | Page

2. Zero the horizontal circle and tighten the upper clamp.

3. Sight on station P.I. Tighten the lower clamp and loosen the upper clamp.
4. To locate station 1, swing the telescope by deflection angle , and tighten
upper clamp. The rear tape man position tape readily c, on station P.C. the
head tape man holds the zero end of and makes adjustment until it is in the
line of sight of the telescope.
5. To locate station 2, loosen upper clamp and adjust the horizontal circle
reading 2. After having made the adjustment, tighten the upper clamp again.
The rear tape man position the c reading of the tape, where c is the chord
distance of a 20-m arc. The head tape man holds the zero end of tape and
make adjustments until it is in the line of sight of the telescope. The head
tape man flags the point with a marker.
6. To locate intermediate stations, repeat step 5.
7. Check the distance between the last intermediate station and station P.C by
length c and the deflection angle equal to I.
