Herbmed Plus: A Novel Herbal Formulation for the Management of Kidney

Stones
The invention offers a simple and novel herbal formulation
for the management of kidney stones. This herbal
formulation has also been tested on patients suffering from
recurrent kidney stone at an exploratory level and had
shown promising results by decreasing urinary parameters
like calcium, oxalate, phosphorous, saturation index and
increase in Citrate, Magnesium & potassium.
Preclinical safety of this formulation is seen in rodents and
found satisfactory. In the preclinical efficacy study with
ethylene glycol model, Herbmed plus has shown decrease
in urinary crystals of various stones and reno-protective
activity in histopathology against standard herbal medicine
& potassium-magnesium-citrate.
Kidney Stone formation is one of the painful urologic disorders that occur in approximately 12% of
the global population, and its recurrence rate in males is 70-81% and 47-60% in females. These
calculi (stones) create problems by blocking the flow of urine and cause severe pain termed as
renal colic when they move along the ureter and if neglected may cause total kidney damage.
In India, the prevalence of kidney stones is 15 per cent and approximately 5 to 7 million
population is suffering from this painful disease. The occurrence of disease is high in the
northern, north western and central region of the Country. The incidences of kidney stones are
moderate in Deccan Plateau and less in Southern India.
Presently, there is no specific medical treatment available for this problem and surgery is the only
choice of treatment that also has limitations & complications. Allopathic drugs can be prescribed
for a very short period for managing the pain but they cannot prevent the formation of kidney
stones. Recently the use of traditional medicine has gained popularity worldwide. The traditional
system of medicines has been widely used in India and is one of the ancient systems of
medicines. This system includes herbal and mineral preparations.
In the market many herbal preparations are available for the management of kidney stones
problem but very few preparations have been tested scientifically.
This formulation is scientifically tested following all the norms and has shown promising results in
the management of kidney stones.

Salient Features

Scientifically tested herbal formulation

Exhibit promising anti-urolithiatic and analgesic activity without any adverse effect in
asymptomatic renal calculi
Reduced the size and density of renal calculi, thereby helping in expulsion
Lessen the pain caused by renal stones when compared to placebo
The formulation can be a drug of choice in future for small, non-obstructive renal calculi,
however, for further confirmation a phase III study is needed

Clinical Trials
A prospective, phase II, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was
successfully conducted in India after taking the necessary approvals.
For this trial 120 patients were screened out which 84 patients were recruited after confirmation of
calculi of size 4-9 mm by non-contrast computerized tomography (CT scan) before and after
completion of the treatment. The results were analyzed by student T-test and Chi-square test.

Test Results
65 patients completed the trial of total 84 recruited
patients. In the treatment group there was 21.34%
reduction in the surface area of calculi (p < 0.02)
while in the placebo group 8.98% increase a in the
size of calculi was observed. The rate of expulsion
was significantly higher in the treatment group as
compared to placebo group. Also, there was
significant reduction and increase in the density of
renal calculi in treated group & placebo group
respectively.
