Days Between
eve hit the midway point of 2016, and these are the Days Between. Between what,
you may ask? Well, its summer, so July and August certainly qualify as the days between
spring and autumn. But heres where Im going with this: They only occur once every
four years the days between drupa and Labelexpo, of course.
I sense a relative calm in our industry, or rather, suppliers catching their collective breath. The label
industry was well represented at drupa in Dusseldorf, what is hands-down the worlds largest and most
comprehensive printing and graphic arts trade show. By some accounts, drupa for the first time was a
digital show. For proof, look no further than the presence of HP Inc., who had the distinction of being
the largest exhibitor, taking that title from Heidelberg. And it should be mentioned that Heidelberg had
a strong digital presence at drupa itself, showcasing its Fire line of presses, including the Gallus Labelfire
340 (formerly known as the DCS 340). For the full L&NW drupa recap, go to page 72 of this issue.
But now, during the Days Between, we transition to a far more targeted trade show, Labelexpo, which
returns to the Chicagoland area this September. And if its anything like the 2015 edition in Brussels
which I fully expect it to be it will also be very much a digital show. In addition to digital label
press manufacturer mainstays HP and Xeikon, the flexo press giants are all now in the digital press mix.
Theres the aforementioned Gallus, and also Mark Andy, Nilpeter, Omet and MPS, all with some sort of
digital label printing technology to showcase. And I havent even mentioned the long list of dedicated
standalone inkjet and tabletop players who will also be exhibiting it would take up this whole page.
For a glimpse of what new products and technologies will be on display in Rosemont, check out the
first 2016 L&NW Labelexpo Product Preview on page 80, which is just the start of what will be our
extensive coverage of the show in both print and online.
This is the calm before the storm so to speak, the Days Between. But our industry is never really
calm. The headlines dominating our Industry News section (page 10) show the M&A trend continuing. Northern California-based wine label and logistics specialist G3 Enterprises has acquired Grigsby
Label, also a company with an exemplary wine label reputation, in a case of a strong company getting
stronger in its area of expertise. Meanwhile, Fort Dearborn and Smyth Companies made news with
acquisitions that expand their product offerings. Fort Dearborn just got a lot stronger in the sleeve label
market, and Smyth has added tube labeling to its portfolio.
The label industry does not take the summer off. See you in September.

he weather in Dsseldorf was hot and sultry, there was a major fire in an outlying hall being used to house refugees, police detained three men allegedly planning a terrorist attack
in the city and despite this, nearly all the exhibitors and visitors
your correspondent spoke to seemed happy with the show. Drupa is
unquestionably the star event of 2016, despite the fact that provisional
visitor figures seem to show a dramatic 18% drop in attendance (from
315,000 to 260,000) compared with the previous show in 2012.
The huge increase in exhibitors of label-related equipment needs no
explanation. We all know that labels and packaging are among the few
bright spots on the printing horizon, but even so it was good to see so
many Labelexpo exhibitors also showing at drupa, just a few months
before the Chicago event. Some, like French finishing equipment maker
SMAG, reckoned that drupa came a poor second to Labelexpo in
value for money. Others including Andy Cook, boss of FFEI (hybrid
presses), also opined to the effect that drupa good, Labelexpo better.
IST Metz curing systems are for both narrow and wide web printers,
and for Jochen Hildebrandt of IST the 2016 show was,As good as, but
no, not better than, 2012. Lars Beck, boss and co-owner of diecutting
specialist Kocher + Beck, was more sanguine, confirming that drupa
was proving a big success. A medium-sized booth at drupa can cost an
exhibitor upwards of $300,000 if you include all the extras from airfares
to hotels to hospitality, and one exhibitor who was laughing all the way
to the bank was Pantec, maker of inline hotfoiling equipment. In a tiny
booth with no machinery, just films and photos, CEO Peter Frei told
your correspondent, Weve already seen nearly all the customers and
prospects we expected to see, plus a whole lot of others we didnt even
know about. Its a low investment show for us, and it has really paid off.
Another exhibitor with a smile was Konica Minolta (KM), a newcomer to narrow web digital equipment. The company has already
sold seven of its dry toner digital label presses in Europe, Olaf Lorenz
told your correspondent. How can a new kid on the block manage to
sell into a market where 30 or more competitors are all touting their
wares? We see a gap in the market in the two to four-thousand-dollar
bracket, says Lorenz. There is one major competitor in this price range
(also from Japan, curiously enough) but KM can more than hold its
own in speed and quality. An interesting and for label converters
mildly disconcerting remark from KMs business development manager was that some of their sales have been to brand owners who want
to bring their label converting in-house.
ETI Convertings Max Bayzelon proudly showed his companys
32 Label & Narrow Web
US patent for its diecutting unit, which cuts face material down to
18 microns. He said, It will even work down to 12 microns, but that
needs delicate handling so were saying 18, which is thinner than most
people thought possible. The EU patent is pending for the same unit,
and this Canadian companys business in Europe, and particularly in
France, is doing well, with many Cohesio (make your own labelstock)
lines sold.
ETI Converting has been in the label business for decades; not
so for Grafikontrol, a family-run Italian company making inspection
systems for newspapers and books. A few years ago, seeing which way
the wind was blowing, CEO Paolo de Grandis adapted the product
line to provide inspection for labels and flexible packaging, and these
sectors now make up 80% of his business.

Struggling with top line growth? Seeing increased competition in the label market?
Short run packaging printing is ideal for todays modern narrow web presses.
At Labelexpo Americas, Flint Group will empower you to:
E X P A N D Y O U R C A P A B I L I T I E S into a new market
the wider world of narrow web package printing! An armory of tools and expertise are
available to meet migration requirements, improve consistency in print, manage colour,
improve productivity, and enable increased demand for short run work.
Flexocure ANCORA delivers the lowest possible migration and is compliant with
Swiss Ordinance and Nestle Guidance Note demands. It also provides high performance
on press, excellent colour strength and adhesion to a variety of synthetic substrates.
At Labelexpo 2016 we introduce to North America Flexocure ANCORA 50. A low
migration UV flexo ink for food labels and some specific packaging applications where
low migration inks are required. Flexocure ANCORA 50 complements our existing low
migration ink series which are dedicated to the most stringent food packaging
applications - Flexocure ANCORA for UV flexo, and Lithocure ANCORA for UV offset.
LED curing improves productivity and offers total lower applied cost in UV flexo printing.
LED curing provides clear and tangible benefits such as:
Lower total operating costs due to an estimated 40% reduction of energy cost
and more productivity due to faster printing speeds
Lower heat generation on press so you can run heat sensitive films
No need to clean reflectors and no bulb replacement increasing press uptime.
EkoCure F is an advanced ink formulation enabling full speed production (500 ft/min),
high colour strength, and excellent adhesion to a wide range of label substrates as well as
shrink sleeves. Flint Group Narrow Web offers a full range of LED curing inks under the
EkoCure brand, including offset, screen inks, and a wide range of coatings.
The insert presented in this issue is printed with EkoCure
ANCORA using the extended colour gamut technique.

GREEK GRUMBLES
Many people think the Greek economy is in a right royal mess and
those people are the optimists. So since the label business generally
follows GDP, suppliers must all be going out of business right? Well
no, not if you talk to Joanis Loxas, whose company represents, imports
and distributes labelstock for Herma and diecutting tools for Kocher +
Beck. Helped by his 30-year experience in the business, Joanis knows
almost every Greek label converter personally. So what is the state of
the Greek label market? Its a strange situation, he says. Greek agricultural exports, such as olive oil, used to be shipped out in bulk then
repackaged and labeled in the country of destination. Now, with the
crisis, our producers are learning that margins can be better if they pack
and label their products here. So the label business, despite everything
you read in the newspapers about the Greek economy, is doing okay.
There is no longer any local production of PS labelstock in Greece;
per capita consumption of pressure sensitive labels is only around four
square meters (compared with over 12 square meters in Northern
Europe) so there is plenty of room for growth. Joanis son Haris explains
that the leading label converters have been investing in new presses.
Can they get finance? The answer is yes, for those who can show a
healthy balance sheet. The Greek economy is not out of the woods
yet.The immediate threat of a Grexit (exit from the Euro-zone and/
or the European Union itself) seems to have receded; however it still
looms like a sword of Damocles over the country. But Joanis Loxas remains cautiously optimistic. The label market sector is still a stronghold
within the otherwise heavily depressed Greek market. Its not easy to
predict how much longer it will take for things to get generally better,
36 Label & Narrow Web
but the country will never sink. It can only dive for some time and
eventually re-emerge. Another big element that supports optimism is
the recovery of the tourist industry that also positively affects the label
business. But if you see what happens here in car, real estate, jewelry,
fashion business... its a real disaster. When you know what we Greeks
have been through over the past seven years, things can only get better.
Lets hope hes right. LNW

included the entire lifecycle of the product, the entire cause and effect.
The example he used was smoking. Since we have proof that cigarette
smoking causes cancer, we have to include the cost of treatment. Back
in the 90s the total cost would have been about $10.00 per cigarette.
Today, 20 years later, it might be $20.00 per cigarette. The process to
obtain the additional charges would be assessed in the form of a health
tax. The tobacco company would finally be paying for what they have
caused. I liken this to LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), which establishes
your true carbon footprint. In a sense, this kind of eco-economy also
covers the costs of byproduct, supporting the newest concept of sustainability, a circular economy. I know, Im reaching, but my point is Lester
was very much ahead of the crowd with his concept of total cost.
Lester believes that the worldwide transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy is under way. His statistics support his theory. Ill enumerate below after you understand how he arrives at his conclusions.
Ive written about the demise of the coal industry and the ecological
and economic consequences. I neglected to mention nuclear energy
and the fact that globally this energy source is also in significant decline. If you go back to the 1950s, the US, and in particular, President
Eisenhower, preached Atoms for Peace. By 1996, global nuclear energy had grown to 18% of electricity generation. By 2013 it was less than
11%, and today I believe it is no more than 89% of global generation.
Construction costs have skyrocketed. Permitting has become very complex. Insurance costs alone have made new nuclear facilities impossible
to justify, much less afford. In fact, operating costs have escalated to the point where
economics are also impossible. Finally, the
nail in the coffin on nuclear energy, at least
in my mind, is waste.
How in the world can we design for a
circular economy if we dont have a solution for waste? To be fair, Eisenhower and
Stanton Avery werent concerned about
end of life so I dont want to sound critical.
Ike is one of the reasons I can write what I
want, and Stan is one of the reasons I have
a job. Hah. But, how can anyone in their
right mind design without a solution for
nuclear waste or justify a technology that
has created Three Mile Island, Fukushima,
and Chernobyl. I dont see any poetic

entered the market. This is a true game changer with China making
almost two-thirds of the worlds PVs, more than the United States,
Germany and Japan combined.
Let me close this column with a quick summary:the sunlight striking the earths surface in just one hour delivers enough energy to power
the world economy for one year. Think of that! The key is to harness
this incredible resource. Utilities using fossil energy and conventional
grids are no longer competitive. Solar technology is so cheap, that along
with creative leasing schemes, the return on investment for residential
installation is under two years. Clean air and cheaper electricity and
as The Great Transition reminds us, for low income families, it means
electricity in their homes for the very first time. Tune in for my next
column, which will include an update on the age of wind and what,
according to Lester Brown, the outlook is for fossil energy.

are a lot of companies that are now finding their products elsewhere
online, so a lot of resources are spent chasing down and shutting down
rogue websites, Sherwood notes. A lot of money is being spent on
lawyers, and a great deal of focus is on that, instead of overt protection.
Still, the ability to make a label do more than one function is
something people are very interested in.We employ QR codes or other
codes, proprietary ones, for track and trace. And we can put various
technologies in one label.
For example, we worked with a company that manufactures a nutritional supplement. The label was intaglio-printed for anti-counterfeit
purposes, plus a void-indicating label from the cap down the side of
bottle. On the lower portion it had a QR code with a randomized
unique number on it, so that when scanned with a phone, it would go
to a database and confirm that it was a valid number.
A lot of discussion is taking place about QR codes lately, Sherwood
says. In Asia they are used all the time, but not nearly as much in the
Western world. The rates of use are probably what direct mail is; if
you get a few percent response, thats good. It used to be that you didnt
want to have a proprietary app to read the code on your product. Now
it downloads a companys app.

If .366 is a stellar batting average, why is it that veteran salespeople
think they can bat a thousand? Why do they think they can close more
sales with less work?
HOW IT WORKS
A trainer works with the team in person or virtually. There are individual meetings with the sales manager and/or the vice president of
sales. There may be assessments of the salespeople at some point, but
first the trainer may want to observe how the team relates to each other
and how the manager interacts with everyone.
If you opt for a virtual sales trainer, you can often save some money,
since the trainer does not have to be on site, stay in a hotel or incur
travel expenses. In this scenario, you will use a web application or company intranet to see and hear each other. If you have multiple locations,
the trainer can do instruction for all locations and then work on skill
building with each person or location.
42 Label & Narrow Web
Here are more advantages of using virtual sales trainers. They can:
1. Adapt to the schedule and selling hours of the team.
2. Suggest online tools and phone apps that have worked for other
clients.
3. Interact with employees who work from home or are on the road.
4. Record sessions for playback or training of future employees.
Whether training happens on site or online, one primary job of
the sales trainer is to help the manager be a more effective leader and
mentor.

s Dion Label Printing heads toward the impressive milestone of being in business for half a century, its a fitting
time to take a look into the operations and capabilities of
the Westfield, MA-based label manufacturer. The company was the
subject of a Narrow Web Profile in the March 2008 issue of Label &
Narrow Web, and much has changed since that visit.
In 1969, John Dion Sr. was faced with a decision to move his family south in order to stay in his role as a middle-level manager with a
printing company. Instead, with a couple printing presses and a tabletop
label press, he decided to start his own business in the cellar of his house.
He gained some local pressure sensitive label customers, and throughout
the 70s, the company grew with a focus on PS labels.
As Dion Label grew, so too did the need for new employees, and
the senior Dion looked no further than his family. So he hired us, his
young kids, recalls John Dion Jr., one of the founders two sons, who is
the companys co-president along with his brother, Dave Dion. When
we started, we were just moving materials, but we eventually learned
how to run the presses. We worked part time, and then we both went
off to college. So my dad hired a few other people and moved the
company out of our house to a rented space in Chicopee, MA, that was
provided by one of our biggest customers at the time, a brush company.
Dion Labels first jobs were manufacturing labels for brush companies printing small, PS labels that would be affixed to hairbrushes
and toothbrushes very much a niche market. This would become a
theme to this day, as Dion prides itself in its diversity in both product
type and markets served.
Steady growth ensued, thanks in part to taking on certain jobs
notable for their complexity and speed-to-market needs. Recalls Dion,
There were certain events that took us a great leap forward. One in
particular was a project we did for Toys-R-Us. This was before digital
printing, and we were printing millions of their
little orange stickers in both small and large quantities with a very quick turnaround. We came up
with a way to make plates both quickly and costeffectively, and efficiently get them on press. And we
shipped these millions of little orange labels all over
the country from out of our little facility.
And that really energized us, Dion says. It
made us realize that we can play in much bigger
markets.
In 1986, Dion Label Printing moved into its
current location in Westfield. At the time, the building was just 15,000 square feet and it housed three
flexo presses. A series of add-ons followed, in terms
of equipment, as well as the size and scope of the
manufacturing facility.
www.labelandnarrowweb.com
DIVERSITY
During its earlier days, a significant source of
revenue for Dion came from the skiing industry.
July/August 2016
According to John Dion, at one point, the company was responsible for
more than half of the North American ski lift ticket printing business.
Thats where we really made our name, he says.
Since its boom in the skiing and recreation arena, Dion Label has
since made its mark in a host of other markets, including OTC pharmaceutical, nutraceuticals, food & beverage, health & beauty, household
products, wine & spirits, craft beer, candle, industrial, decal & permits,
medical and specialty printing.
Today the ski market only accounts for 3% of Dions business, and
the company prides itself on its ability to adapt and innovate as a means
to differentiate from the competition. Whatever we can print with
our presses, diversity of product and customer type has always helped
us thrive, Dion says.
Contributing to the companys growth and success have been key
acquisitions in both personnel and printing equipment. In 2002, Randy
Duhaime joined Dion as general manager, bringing a wealth of print
operations management experience. He was on board when the company acquired its first digital assets.
We started our digital journey in 2005 with the addition of an HP
Indigo WS4050. We had such great success with it, that a year later we
added a second Indigo, Duhaime says.It met our needs better than we
had expected. With its extended color gamut, we were able to match
the colors we were producing with our flexo presses, and thats been
a great asset. Weve since upgraded the presses twice, moving up to a
6000 model and then a 6600, as wed put a lot of miles on the others.
In 2015, Dion made the move to upgrade even further to two HP
Indigo WS6800 models. The presses offer increased output with faster
speeds of up to 130 fpm in enhanced productivity mode (EPM), and
a wider image format is achieved with a print width of 12.59". The
6800 can print materials as thin as 0.0005" (0.5 pt) to as thick as 0.018"
(18 pt), including both pressure sensitive labels and flexible packaging.
We continue to be driven by the needs of our customers, there
is no doubt about it. So we are committed to investing in technology
that helps to better meet their needs, Duhaime says.
Dion takes this same approach to its flexo press acquisitions and
upgrades as well. In whats expanded to become the companys 30,000
square foot facility are two 10" 8-color Propheteer presses and a 13"
8-color Nilpeter press, which was added in response to increasing demands for quality and more print stations.
An MPS 16" 8-color full servo UV press was added in 2008, which
set the stage for Dions most recent press acquisition. In December
2015, a second MPS press was installed an EF-430 that allows printing on 17" wide substrates from thin films to heavy tag. The press uses
both UV and water-based inks and has several rail-mountedaccessories for multiple web configurations. Both of Dions MPS presses are
equipped with AVT video inspection equipment. Ideal for meeting
Dions stringent quality demands, the high-speed, high-resolution linescanners monitor 100% of the web, providing operators with immediate
feedback on possible defects.
Commenting on the initial choice to go with MPS, John Dion
says, We were looking for a press that could print labels comparable
to what we were producing digitally. And after doing our due diligence

including employing those from GMI International. To accommodate
them, Dion put in the effort, and today is the only company in the
US that is GMI-certified for both conventional and digital printing.

A 3D WORLD
New prepress software has allowed companies to visualize exactly how
a product will look on the shelf. Esko Studio allows users to save time
in the development of packaging. Additionally, 3D software enables the
creation of virtual mockups. This can save considerable time, money
and waste down the line.
The goal is to show packaging early in design development, when
it is easier to review a variety of alternatives and to check to avoid
errors, explains de Roeck. Brand owners are able to see the end
result before they spend money and resources into the development
of mockups or short runs. This can go all the way to visualization on
a store shelf, next to competitive products.
www.labelandnarrowweb.com
PREPRESS Software
This software helps brand owners visualize how design tweaks will
affect the product on the shelf. More modern technologies like eye
tracking can be used to validate the ability to attract the consumer
before a label is ever sent to the press.
Accurate prediction reduces waste and inaccurate prediction produces waste, sometimes a lot of waste, says Welch. The key to customer
satisfaction is setting proper expectations of the final result without
surprises. If precise final product prediction is achieved, then waste is
reduced and designers make better decisions sooner.
Eskos 3D software can also help with the development of shrink
sleeve artwork. Applications such as Esko Studio Toolkit for Shrink
Sleeves can automatically resolve art distortion around irregularly
shaped containers and provide a 3D visual of it, adds de Roeck. This
is much faster than the trial and error process needed when testing
mock-ups in a heated shrink sleeve oven.
The advent of 3D design technology opens up a new world of possibilities in the future. According to Esko, implementing asset management has the potential to take form on print, websites and social media
campaigns. We find occasionally that brand owners cannot launch a
promotional campaign because they do not have the product available yet, says de Roeck. Its said that The packaging is the product.
For products on the grocery shelf, no one sees the product; they see
the package. If you cannot show the package on the website if the
packaging is not ready product launches can be delayed. With 3D,
collaborative and asset management software, there could be more ties
between the virtual online and physical worlds.
Welch anticipates PDF becoming the universal platform for package

COMBINING PLATFORMS
Esko has built its brand on partnerships, and the company has designed
its software to take advantage of an open platform. At drupa, Esko coexhibited with X-Rite Pantone and Enfocus to create solutions that
de Roeck says, no one else can match. These brands exist under the
same parent umbrella, which allows more freedom to integrate. In
this case, 1+1+1 is more than three, says de Roeck. Esko has always
provided an open platform to support a broader ecosystem we offer
a more horizontal platform for any application to tie into.
Esko has also rebranded its software system to the Esko Software
Platform. The name change is designed to emphasize advancements in
automation, user experience and open platform. At drupa, Esko was
featured with more than two dozen partners.
According to Krasnovsky, the backbone of HPs prepress software
for the Indigo labels and packaging print server is powered by Esko.

PREPRESS Software
This digital front end (DFE) is used with all HP Indigo labels and
packaging presses, explains Krasnovsky. It features a robust RIP engine, a state-of-the-art color engine to deliver accurate and repeatable
colors across multiple jobs andpresses, as well as a full range of prepress
capabilities, such as basic preflight, step and repeat, finishing marks,
color strips and smart marks. In the case of variable data printing jobs,
the DFE can also be used to perform the composition. The integrated
Color Engine uses an innovative, automatic refinement engine that
enables simultaneous multi-color refinement, covering the full Pantone
library with one click.
HP Indigo utilizes HP SmartStream Designer for variable data
printing, which features an authoring tool for Adobe Illustrator and
InDesign. The HP SmartStream Designer can be easily integrated with
third-party solutions like security partners to add incremental value to
the applications. These solutions work in tandem with Esko Deskpack
products and Esko Automation Engine. While it is not sold by HP
Indigo, it is an important part of many HP Indigo users ecosystems,
says Krasnovsky. Automation Engine integrates and automates all
design and prepress activities in one workflow for HP Indigo labels

ts said that the anilox roll is the heart of flexo. For human beings,
taking care of ones heart is of paramount importance to ensuring
health and longevity. Much like how a proper diet and regular exercise is vital to heart health, a flexographer taking care of anilox rolls
through proper care and storage is pivotal in providing high quality,
defect-free printing.
Todays label customer demands are often tied to pushing converters
to lower prices and shorten job runs. Patrick Potter, vice president of
operations at Flexo Wash, says that these factors have created for converters a dramatic increase in job changeovers and increased inventories,
or both. If the anilox roll is the heart of the flexo printing process and
critical to maintaining a well-run operation, proper cleaning, care, and
maintenance of your anilox inventory is essential to your survival. The
absence of good cleaning practices will lead to increased downtime and
inconsistent print results, he says.
Joe Walczak, president of Sonic Solutions, notes that using a dirty
anilox roll means that color densities on the final product will not
equal those specified for the job. Because of this, he says, the printer
will incur costs in wasted ink, paper, and labor to determine that there
is a problem and then correcting for it. An idle press is not generating
revenue; and an undetected print error could ultimately mean losing
any repeat business from the customer, says Walczak.
In order to avoid the aforementioned downtime, inconsistencies
and potential revenue loss, converters have various anilox cleaning
technologies available to them, supplied by manufacturers dedicated
to delivering the peace of mind that a clean anilox roll provides. What
follows are descriptions of the latest machinery offered from some of
the industrys anilox cleaning experts.
FLEXO WASH
Flexo Wash was founded in 1990 by an inventive Danish label printer
in response to increased demand for improved print quality, as well as
a safe and efficient production process. Centrally located in Louisville,
KY, USA for over 20 years, Flexo Wash, LLC provides Flexo Wash
cleaning technology in North America for the flexographic and gravure printing industries. Todays inks and coatings can be difficult to
clean, even when they are still wet, explains Potter. The longer an ink
or coating has been allowed to dry in the cells, the more difficult the
cleaning process can be. Also, he says, plugged and dirty anilox rolls
create surface tension that prevents cells from accepting and releasing
the correct ink volume. Converters cannot wait to cleaning their rolls
until the anilox can no longer perform. The market is too competitive,
and dirty anilox rolls cause inconsistent print quality, increased downtime, excessive waste and thereby loss of competitiveness.

ANILOX Cleaners
SONIC SOLUTIONS
According to Sonic Solutions president Joe Walczak, the reason that
anilox maintenance has grown over the last 20 years is because of the
use of water-based inks and increased line counts. Water-based inks
leave a clear and hard resin in the porous cavities of the ceramics in an
anilox rolls cells, he says. Over time, the resin builds upon itself and
slowly steals cell volume.
Based in Mokena, IL, USA, Sonic Solutions method of anilox
cleaning uses ultrasonic technology. Walczak explains,Cleaning the
anilox cells out thoroughly and safely is a lot harder than it might seem.
But the physics of ultrasonics make it the best process to reliably remove
100% of the foreign matter from the cells.
Increased line count anilox rolls have resulted in cells that are proportionately smaller and thus harder to clean. At Sonic Solutions, we
responded by changing the ultrasonic frequency level on all of our
products from 43 kHz to 68 kHz. This means a smaller air bubble is
created that effectively enters the smaller cells and safely and gently
pulls out the built-up dirt, Walczak says.
Walczak points out that label printers often struggle with cleaning
rolls after they use certain opaque whites, metallic adhesives and coatings. Ultrasonic cleaning blasts through these with relative ease, he
says. Most printers already realize the importance of cleaning anilox
rolls. The trend weve seen is that printers are cleaning their anilox rolls
after every press run, assuring that the anilox will not be the cause of
any problems on the next print job. The first comment coming from
our detractors is that this will damage a roll, but thats really not true. If
the roll is cleaned after each use, then the roll isnt getting all that dirty,
plus the built-up contents of the cells are still relatively soft. For these
reasons, the cleaning time is pretty short approximately five minutes
of soaking and then a brief application of ultrasonics. There is minimal
impact on the anilox, explains Walczak.
Sonic Solutions recently introduced its Phoenix Series, which is
providing its customers with a better and safer ultrasonic cleaning process. Also, Walczak says, with the Phoenix line, we can now offer the
industrys best sleeve cleaning option. In the past, costly wash and blast
systems were the only alternative. Now we can easily and economically
stretch the process to accommodate any size sleeve, typically at half the
cost of the other processes.
www.labelandnarrowweb.com

ANILOX Cleaners
According to Walczak, ultrasonic cleaning is the best cleaning process in the marketplace. Its the same process used in hospital operating
rooms as well as NASA environments that rely on 100% cleaning of
their tools and products, he says. Sonic Solutions equipment works
much the same way. Weve only added one step the soaking process.
Everything else works the same. We intentionally made the system
easy and simple to operate with minimal input and variability to the
user. We tell our customers all the time, Its not sexybut it works.
The equipment consists of the ultrasonic tank and generator along
with a rotating unit and support bar. All functions and variables are
preset at what Walczak says are the safest levels in the industry. Just a
few switches turn certain functions on and off for the generator, heater
and rotating unit. With the Phoenix series, the generator is outside of
the tank, allowing for safer generator function and also ease of replacing the generator by simply unplugging it and plugging in a new one.
with an advanced laser sensor, the powerhead detects the rolls characteristics diameter, length, surface to optimize the rotation speed
and powerhead movement pattern to provide consistent deep cleaning

ANILOX Cleaners
APEX INTERNATIONAL
Apex International, the anilox roll manufacturer known for its patented GTT technology based on open slalom ink channels, has recently
launched its Opticlean line of anilox cleaning equipment. The system
features two rubber rollers at the bottom of the cleaning tank with
the anilox rotating on top. This results in perfect cleaning, according to Markus Pflgl, Apexs technical engineer and the developer of
Opticlean, because the cleaning agent is not only dripping off the roll
surface with only little time for weakening the dried ink in the cells,
but it is sprayed between the anilox surface and the rubber rollers.
This guarantees full coverage of the surface with a very homogenous distribution and the rubber renews the cleaning agent within
the cells at each turn and brings also a kind of pressure to release the
dried inks easier and faster, Pflgl explains. This is why the Opticlean
is the perfect solution for very high screen rollers and is most probably
the fastest cleaning machine available.
Pflgl points out that when you lay down the anilox only on top
of the two rubber rollers, you can achieve absolute flexibility in format
sizes. He says, If you have different printing presses and sizes or types
such as sleeves or rollers of aniloxes, you can have perfect cleaning
without touching or adjusting anything within the washing tank. No
axles or bearings have to be adjusted for each wash.
Opticlean has three cycles: washing with a chemical agent, rinsing
with high-pressured water and then drying with pressured air. Pflgl
says,All three cycles are fully automatic and you only have to push one
button to start the machine. When the procedure is done, the machine
signals that it is ready for the next roll. Of course you can program the
cleaning and cycle times depending on the situation with each anilox
roll. Apex also has a new system for sealing anilox sleeves at their sides
for easy handling. Explains Pflgl, These are pneumatic expansion
adapters, so that even with wide sleeves they can be handled easily by
only one operator. LNW

PROMOTIONAL Labels
This louder label announces new products, pricing, discounts, giveaways and more.
hile the goal of many labels is to pop off the shelf, the
role of the promotional label is to attract consumers to
something new or different about an item. These labels
tend to involve shorter runs and have color-sensitive features to draw
attention. In advertising a company or service, these labels might be
found on hand sanitizers, confectionery bags, water bottles, magnets,
stickers, among others.
Promotional labels will often include in-mold labeling (IML), as
well. These labels will be featured on cups and other assorted drink
ware, especially when promoting a movie, concert or sporting event.
Other promotional labels include shelf talkers, which call out to the
consumer, or coupons that accompany a product. These may come in
the form of inserts, peel-offsknown as piggy-back labels, or removable sticker ads.
These labels serve an effective role in the marketplace. The usage
of instant redeemable coupons (IRCs) have a high rate of success,
as they attract attention and provide cost savings. According to Kim
Hensley, a product manager with Mactac Roll Label, recent research
from a Promotional Marketing Association report finds that instant onpackaging coupon redemptions have increased by 33%. Additionally,
Inmars 2014 coupon trends report states that in the food industry
redemption rates section, IRCs are at a high of 23.85% compared to
the traditional newspaper at 0.3%; for non-food items, IRCs have a
redemption rate of 32.67%.
If a consumer is looking at several products side-by-side, the one
64 Label & Narrow Web
with the promotional offer will move off the store shelves faster than
the products without, explains Hensley. If it is a coupon label, the
consumer feels good about their purchase because they received an
additional savings. It really sets you apart from the competition.
Promotional labels can come in many forms, as well. There is a
wide variety of media, some of which is very different from the typical pressure sensitive labelstock, says Victor Gomez, sales manager of
Industrial Solutions, Epson America. For example, IML and confectionery bags are unsupported films, sometimes very thin. Shelf talkers
may be printed on card stock that is single or double sided, or on
durable materials like Tyvek. In applications like shelf talkers, there are
no adhesives, but where an adhesive is needed, like stick-on coupons
or bumper stickers, the choice of adhesives is much more varied. Many
promotional labels are delivered in sheet form and applied to the finished product in a secondary process, rather than in roll form (IML,
stickers, retail, etc.). Some markets, such as pharmaceutical, have specific
regulations for the way promotional labels are made, the content allowed and how they are to be used.
According to David Grossman, chief operating officer of Durham,
NC, USA-based Logo Label Printing, the content of the label is louder, shouting out something new or different about the product. There
may be no difference in the size, shape or material.
Promotional labels commonly stray away from the typical imagery
and color schemes, and experiment with sizes, materials and colors that
are unique to attract new customers. In many cases, these labels will

setup costs. Customers can just send a file or multiple files and they
can be run as a batch at higher volumes, providing them with more
cost-effective pricing.
Customization is everything right now, explains Grossman of
Logo Label Printing. From the smallest to the largest companies, they
are asking for custom labels in the form of either private label or within
their own product name. Cokes program with individual names on the
bottles is a perfect example. Everyone wants to do that now. We used
to print labels for water bottles for a local Mercedes dealer. Within a
case of water, each bottle had a label with a different model car on it.
If clients were considering a specific model, they would get a water
bottle with that model on the label. Only digital printing can do that.
Logo Label Printing specializes in promotional labels, with the
end uses ranging from trade shows, car dealerships and special events.
Grossman says that these labels represent a significant part of his business. The companys digital capabilities have allowed it to thrive in this
market. Logo Label Printing features three different digital printing
technologies under one roof an EFI Jetrion inkjet press, an HP Indigo
wet toner digital press, and a Xeikon press using dry toner technology.
From our perspective, the ability to simplify the process of variable data printing with digital technology has been a huge boost,
says Grossman. The process is quick and simple. All that we need is a
spreadsheet and away we go. We base the press that we will use on the
material and the complexity of the graphics, along with cost restrictions
that the client may have. We can give our clients the option that best
meets all of their requirements.
According to Gomez, variable data printing for direct marketing
enables the oxymoron of mass customization. Promotional label
highlights often include text, images, consecutive or unique numbers,
bar codes, QR codes or any other form of variable data. In addition,
the ability to track data on items like discount coupons could tell
brands how effective certain promotions were in reaching its desired
customer base.
Customization leads to more effective messaging, explains Gomez.
Promotional labels can be deployed in support of localized events
like concerts and festivals. They can also be adapted to events that

went somewhere else and its even easier for a sales person to not follow

themes with strong growth potential such as 3D printing, functional
printing and packaging printing proved to be the right decision. Be
it publication, commercial, packaging or industrial printing printing
technology offers matching solutions for all of these applications while
opening up new lines of business and business models at the same time.
The print industry is constantly re-inventing itself and offers a wealth
of high-potential facets. And this is precisely what drupa 2016 has very
impressively shown. We were able to experience a highly innovative
industry here in the 19 exhibition halls, one that has succeeded in
moving out of the valley of tears and grasping the future by the neck,
said Claus Bolza-Schnemann, chairman of the drupa Committee and
chairman of the board at Koenig & Bauer AG.

produce labels. Incredibly fast, it combines full color single pass inkjet
output with an integrated laser diecutter, Clendenning said.
Industrial inkjet specialist Durst unveiled its new corrugated packaging and display printing segment at drupa, highlighted by the new
Rho 130 SPC which is based on the latest generation of single-pass
printing systems which Durst is already using in the label printing segment, for instance, with the Tau 330. The single-pass UV inkjet label
printing system alone has been installed for 60 clients within the space
of a year. Its success is based not just on its performance, but also on the
configuration and automation options that allow end-to-end production and, with low-migration UV inks, also support its use on primary
packaging. At drupa, Durst presented the Tau 330 in combination with
a laser finishing system (LFS) and provided information about the new
Tau 330E standalone model which, with a pigment ink system, offers
a cost-effective gateway to digital production. The Tau 330E is an
introductory-level machine, said Richard Thomas, business development manager, Durst Americas. It is designed for providing better
laydown of ink and higher color strength, and allows our customers
to be very fierce competitors in the market. It cuts ink costs by 25%.
The Bobst range of equipment and services resonated extraordinarily well with visitors to drupa, resulting in sales at the show exceeding both expectations and the total recorded at Bobsts record breaking
drupa four years ago. Buyers were attracted to all aspects of the Bobst
portfolio, and showed particularly strong interest in the new M6 Digital
Flexo press, as well as in mid- and high-range converting for sheetfed
carton manufacturing and in services such as online troubleshooting.
Todd Blumsack,VP, Business Unit Web Fed at Bobst North America
Inc., noted that Bobsts acquisition of Gidue added new flexo solutions
to Bobsts narrow web portfolio, and Bobst is introducing more products to the market. At the end of last year, Bobst acquired Gidue, adding their narrow web flexo solutions to our portfolio, said Blumsack.
Our new M6 is designed for folding carton and flexible packaging.
The CL750D narrow web coder was launched here this year. The
MW85F is our new CI press designed for narrow web. It is designed
for short runs, and offers Smart GPS, which is patented by Bobst and
helps with quick turnarounds. It is now adapted to the MW85F. The
RS 6002 and RZS 6003 are two gravure stations with drive-in ink
rollers. The reaction has been incredible for the M6 in North America,
with an amazing number of machines sold before and during the show,
Blumsack added. The CL750D and MW85F have gone over exceptionally well. With Digital Flexo and Revo, we are exceptionally well
positioned for the label and narrow web market.
AVT introduced a set of next-generation solutions and technologies,
including new digital press inspection and control solutions such as the
new Helios D inspection system, designed specifically for digital label
presses; new inline color management solutions; a new cloud-based
quality standards and automation platform; inspection solutions for
label and corrugated boards, driven by AVTs alliance with Erhardt +
Leimer (E+L); and web inspection platforms such as the new Turbo
HD line for label and packaging applications.
At drupa, AVT premiered the Helios D digital press inspection, an
automatic, 100% print inspection solution designed to meet the specific
needs of digital printing in the labels and narrow web markets. Based on
AVTs proven, well-established Helios product line, Helios D supports
all stages of digital production workflow, including the identification
of specific defects like missing nozzles, ink dripping spots, and color
changes as soon as they occur. The result is reduced waste, enhanced
production and comprehensive process monitoring.
EFI presented its largest drupa tradeshow exhibit to date, featuring the worldwide launch of several new platforms and products.
EFIs drupa exhibit addressed customers key opportunities for future
growth with accelerated, streamlined production workflows and valuable Imaging of Things opportunities. The focused was on delivering greater customization and appeal in everything from signage and
packaging to dcor, apparel and industrial manufacturing.
The focus EFI has placed in R&D to improve every part of the
digital production chain results in a unique breakthrough and innovative offering that we are very excited to present at the worlds largest
printing tradeshow, said Guy Gecht, EFIs CEO. The breakthrough
new platforms we are showing for the first time could be game changers for customers as the world moves from long runs to customized,
on-demand manufacturing.
In addition to its own drupa presence, Esko supported many partner
exhibits, events and seminars, underscoring its position as a market
leader and innovator in packaging management, design, prepress and
production.Working with such an extensive partner network provides
us with a diverse and unparalleled view of industry trends, challenges
and opportunities, said Philippe Adam, vice president of global marketing at Esko. Its a reality today that the packaging production workflow
gets more and more complex. Esko solutions alone will not solve all
industry challenges, but as the preferred open platform at the heart
of a multi-faceted production workflow, the integrated ecosystem of
partner solutions is the foundation on which our common customers build future-proof businesses. he added. That way, we assure our
solutions perform to the best of their ability and address the biggest
market-driven opportunity: to simplify the packaging production process - Packaging Simplified. Together with our partners, we create the
best possible end user experience and support growth and profitability.

highlight at ETIs drupa booth. We demonstrated the Pellicut diecutting station, which is able to diecut on very thin recyclable liner, said
Shingel. This allows for more labels per roll so there are fewer roll
changes and less transportation. It is very interesting. We have seen
particularly strong interest in the US and Europe. We have had presentations every hour and they have been very successful.
Flint Group showcased a wide range of inks and services at drupa 2016. Sheetfed LED is a most exciting development for us, said
Michael Kellen,VP sales, sheetfed, North America. LED continues to
grow in inks and coatings, and it is a transformational opportunity for
printers. We have developed our XCURA inks for LED. And LED is
becoming increasingly critical for the future of commercial and package printers. Our LED coatings are another frontier, and it is a market
that is developing very quickly.
Deanna Klemesrud, global marketing director Brand & Promo,
Flint Group Packaging & Narrow Web, discussed the new XtraMile
global packaging program and Vivo Color Solutions launched at drupa.
XtraMile is our services solution program for our customers who want
to increase their bottom line through increased productivity, reduced
waste, training and environmental concerns, explained Klemesrud.
Our teams do a pressroom audit, including prepress. It is a real partnership with our customers, who can make these improvements that
will benefit their bottom line. Vivo Color Solutions is our new color
management system.
Filip Weymans, director segment marketing, Labels & Packaging at
Xeikon, said the combination of Xeikon and Flint Group is proving to
be powerful. Many printers want broader diversification in the market,
and we bring a new offering to Flint Groups customers, Weymans
said. Digital is now a mainstream technology in self-adhesive labels,
where Flint Group Narrow Web is number one in the market. We focus
on document printing, labels and packaging and also folding cartons.
Among the highlights for Xeikon was its new Fusion technology.
Fusion is a new technology within our toolbox. If you think about
the world of digital, there is a need for one platform that offers all embellishments, which is what our Fusion technology offers, Weymans
added. We did a technology demonstration and we already announced
our first pilot site. We have our workflow, color and software tools.
Xeikon is creating a solution for the broader segment of the label
market. Xeikon also celebrated during the show the sale of a Xeikon
3300 to Benelux label printing leader Label Products.
Matthieu Carni, business development manager at Siegwerk, talked
about Siegwerks entry into the world of digital inks for the label and
narrow web market with its SicuraJet series of inks. Siegwerk is entering the digital market, beginning with UV inkjet for narrow web
and labels and directly on packaging, Carli reported. We have been
working on inkjet inks for three years, and we are already commercial.
It is a fragmented market, but it will grow. We have partnerships with
some OEMs, and we have a lab and pilot production unit in France
near our UV and energy curing lab. We can formulate our ink, test it
and run it on a production line.
Drupa will continue its four-year cycle and the next staging is
scheduled from June 23 July 3, 2020 in Dsseldorf, Germany. LNW

SUSTAINABLE INKS
Siegwerk
Siegburg, Germany
n Siegwerk is now offering its second generation of sustainable
water-based inks for paper and board applications UniXYL. The
new product range is partially based on natural resins and provides an
environmentally friendly alternative to conventional inks.
Water-based inks have grown
in popularity and demand.They
are characterized by low VOC
(volatile organic compounds)
emissions and lack of flammability, making it easier to comply with relevant regulations.
Siegwerk combines this technology with a basis of renewable
components. The result is the UniXYL series sustainable inks offering
an environmental benefit. The bio-based resin contained in UniXYL
inks is obtained from lignocellulosic bio-mass, which is available in
feedstocks from forestry.
While the new ink range is water-based and also contains bio-mass
components, customers benefit from the same level of performance
compared to conventional water-based inks.
Siegwerk produces its water-based and eco-friendly inks in a dedicated laboratory at its Technical Center in Annemasse (France). The
hybrid technology of the new UniXYL ink range modified biopolymers combined with standard oil-derived acrylic polymers used
as a binder goes back to the development of the UniRICS product
line, which was launched in 2011.

COLOR MEASUREMENT
X-Rite Pantone
Grand Rapids, MI, USA
n X-Rite and its subsidiary Pantone LLC have announced the
X-Rite eXact Xp, a new option in the companys eXact spectrophotometer platform. The eXact Xp is designed to help package printers
and converters more accurately measure color on flexible film materials. Printers, ink and premedia suppliers, and brands can use this new
handheld device to better understand, control and manage colors on
flexible film materials across the entire packaging supply chain.
Even the most sophisticated converters can find it challenging to
measure color on flexible film substrates. For some types of films, the
orientation of the measurement instrument relative to the films extrusion direction can impact results. With the eXact Xp, X-Rite has
addressed this challenge, introducing special enhancements that help
users accurately and consistently measure on a variety of film substrates,
including lamination materials and base structures.
The X-Rite eXact Xp supports the measurement modes M0, M1,
M2 and has all of the same features as the other devices in the eXact
Family of spectrophotometers, including X-Rite eXact Scan. It fully
supports ISO color measurement standards and measurements are compatible with common measurement modes of the standard eXact on
printed materials. The eXact Xp is also supported with existing eXact
Family software and applications.

POUCH FILM
Toray Plastics (America)
North Kingstown, RI, USA
n Toray Plastics has introduced Barrialox SBR2, a new highbarrier, transparent, aluminum oxide-coated polyester film for retort
pouch applications. The product is made in Japan by Torays sister
company, Toray Advanced Film Co., Ltd. The retort pouch, which is
used to package cooked, sterilized food, has gained acceptance among
consumers who value the convenience of microwaveable meals and
on-the-go foods.
Barrialox SBR2 film offers CPGs and converters a new generation
of ALOX-coated film, featuring thermal stability and enhanced mechanical properties. The high-strength and dimensional stability enables
it to withstand the rigors of the converting process and the intense high
heat and pressure of retort sterilization. The films strength and resilience
contributes to the production of a finished, post-retort pouch that has
excellent oxygen- and moisture-barrier durability. Typical value, flat
sheet oxygen- and moisture-barrier transmission rates for Barrialox
SBR2 are 0.01cc/100 in. and 0.02grams/100 in, respectively.
Barrialox SBR2 resists pinholing, flex-cracking, and scuffing and
abrasion, making it a preferred choice over more delicate aluminum
oxide-coated films. In standard laminations, SBR2 is reverse-printed to
create a colorful, attractive package that can be microwaved. To manufacture a pouch with added convenience and high heat-seal strengths,
Barrialox SBR2 can be laminated with Torays TreaTear DR72 film.
TreaTear DR72 is a directional-tear CPP sealant film that provides an

easy, straight tear for opening the package. Barrialox SBR2 can also be
used in the manufacture of non-retort clear packaging and in lidding
lamination applications.

SYRINGE LABELS
Schreiner MediPharm
Blauvelt, NY, USA
n Schreiner MediPharm, in close cooperation with the Clinical
Trial Supplies Unit of Sanofi in Montpellier, France, has developed a
solution for blinding syringes during clinical study trials.
To best guarantee valid and
compliant results during clinical
trials, it is important to neutralize
investigational products to ensure
that an active drug and placebo
cannot be distinguished from one
another. At the same time, there
is a legal obligation to provide
extensive product information in
different languages for drugs being tested. This presents a particular
challenge for labeling, especially when transparent containers with small
radii are involved.
For use in clinical trials, the label must provide sufficient space for
compulsory text. In addition, it must ensure that each investigational
product has the same appearance, even in transparent syringe barrels.
Depending on the required amount of text, a one- or two-layered
wrap design each of which allows double-sided printing per layer
of film is used for the syringe. Accomplishing this requires extensive,
high opacity printing of the transparent material.
The product solutions that have been developed are based on a
particularly long, one-layered wrap-around label named Pharma-Wrap,
