Lets fight SWINE FLU

Origin
Swine Flu is a respiratory disease, caused by a strain of the influenza virus known as H1N1.
Although, H1N1 is the same strain that causes seasonal outbreaks of flu in humans, the latest type is
different as it is a mutated version containing genetic material that is generally found in strains of the
virus that affect humans, birds and swine (pigs).
Symptoms:
The first symptoms of swine flu are fever (greater than 100F or 37.8C), sore throat, body ache and
fatigue. Some patients have also complained about running nose, diarrhea and vomiting.
But these symptoms alone would not suggest that a person is infected by Swine Flu, as it can be
confirmed only after testing a respiratory specimen, thats taken from the suspected case within the first
four to five days.
So it is important to seek medical help if one feels that he/she has flu.
Precautions:
Stay Home
If you are sick or have any flu-like symptoms, stay home. Do not go to work. Swine flu symptoms may
mimic those of regular flu and cold symptoms.
Contain Your Cough
Cough or sneeze into the crook (inside elbow) of your arm. This way you do not transfer the germs to
your hands and then to every object you touch. Swine flu is very contagious, and can spread easily by
touching an infected object and then touching your face. A flu mask will help you avoid infection in
enclosed spaces.
Wash Hands Frequently
Wash hands constantly to avoid swine flu. Anything you touch may be affected, so keeping hands clean
will help you avoid infection.
Hand Sanitizer
Carry hand sanitizer with you. If you have things others have touched, use your hand sanitizer to avoid
swine flu infection. In addition, avoid shaking hands or other hand to hand contact whenever possible.
Also avoid kissing on the cheek or other face to face contact as a greeting method.
Public Facilities
Touch public handles and pens as little as possible. These are loaded with germs that may carry the
swine flu virus.
Air Travel
When you fly, be most diligent about following these guidelines. Transferring any flu, including swine flu,
is most likely in close quarters like an airplane.
Avoid Crowds
Stay out of crowds as much as possible. Close proximity to other people will heighten your chances of to
get swine flu.

Visit Your Doctor

Get to a doctor immediately if you develop symptoms of swine flu including high fever and body
aches. Swine flu can be deadly, and it is imperative to get to a physician immediately if you think you
have swine flu symptoms and think you might have contracted the swine flu virus.
Kindly find few more very useful Tips and Advice regarding Swine Flu by Dr. Vinay Goyal who is an
MBBS,DRM,DNB (Intensi invist and Thyroid specialist) having clinical experience of over 20 years.
1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).
2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to
eat, bathe or slap).
3. * Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt)... * H1N1 takes 2-3
days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms.
Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a
healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and
powerful preventative method.
4. Similar to 3 above, * clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. * Not
everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but *
blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt
water is very effective in bringing down viral population. *
5. * Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). * If
you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.
6. * Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. * Drinking warm liquids has the same
effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into
the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.
In case of high fever or sore throat please consult doctor immediately and do not come to the office
till the time it gets completely cured.
