1. Introduction
Internship training program is necessary for completion of our degree. Its
necessary for me to complete my internship program about six week in any
manufacturing or service concern industry accordingly with our specialization.
So, I choose banking sector because I have interest in this sector and also the
reason behind choosing this sector is, mostly teachers during their lectures use
example related banks. The basic objective is how to implement my bookish
knowledge in a practical manner. This internship will help me in future because it
makes me punctual and now I can understand how employees work in a stress
environment.

2. Overview of the organization:

2.1 Brief history:
MCB Bank Limited was incorporated by the Adamjee Group on July 9,
1947 in Kolkata in Bengal, under the Indian Companies Act, VII of 1913 as a
limited company. Due to changing scenario of the region, the certificate of
incorporation was issued on 17 August, 1948 with a delay of almost 1 year; the
certificate was issued at Chittagong. The first Head office of the company was
established at Dacca and Mr. G.M. Adamjee was appointed its first chairman.
It

was

incorporated

with

an authorized capital of Rs. 15 million. The Bank

transferred its registered/Head office from Dhaka to Karachi on August 23, 1956
through a special Resolution.

NATIOINALIZATION:
In January 1974, the government of Pakistan nationalized MCB following
the banks (Nationalization) Act 1974, subsequently, in June 1974, Premier Bank
limited merged with MCB.
PRIVATIZATION:
A wave of economic reforms swept Pakistan in the late 1990s introducing
the need for privatization of state owned banks and companies in April 1991,
MCB because Pakistans first privatized Bank, the government of Pakistan
transferred the management of the Bank to Nishat Group, group of leading
industrialists of the country by selling 26% shares of the Bank. With a view to
broaden equity holding the government sold 25% of the paid up capital to the
general public. In terms of agreement between the government of Pakistan and
the Nishat Group additional 24% shares have been purchased by the group
making their holding 50%. As of June 2008, the Nishat Group owns a majority
stake in the bank. 25% was retained by the government.
Now it is fully privatized.
Mian Muhammad Mansha is the Chairman of the group (and also MCB)
and has played instrumental role in its success. In recognition of Mr. Manshas
contribution, the Government of Pakistan has conferred him with "Sitara-eImtiaz", one of the most prestigious civil awards of the country.

classify them according to respective segments. Identification of external and
macro factors that influence buyers and thus change the size and composition of

Political and legal environment:

Banks are strongly affected by the political and legal considerations. This
environment is composed of regulatory agencies and government law that

To protect consumers from unfair business practices adopted by banking
companies

departments. The branch where I complete my internship Mr. Bisharat was
performing these activities.
Remittances:
A major function of any banking system is the transfer of funds from one client or
one place to another. By providing this service to the customer the bank earns a
lot of income in the form of service charges. This department deals with local
currency remittance i.e. remittance from one city to another without actually
carrying the currency. MCB uses following instrument for transferring of money:

Demand Drafts (DD)

Pay Order (PO)

Clearance department:
All the external functions of clearing are carried by NIFT (National Institute of
Facilitation Technology) while the internal operations are performed by clearing

department. It is just like any courier service which takes the cheques of other
banks and delivers the cheques of that branch to it.
Clearing is a system by which banks exchange cheques and other negotiable
instruments drawn on each other within a specified area and securing the
payment for its clients through the clearing house. A clearing house is a general
organization of the banks, basic purpose is balancing the cross obligation in the
form of cheques. When there are many banks in the country each will receive a
number of cheques drawn on other banks, deposited as well. A clearing house is
an organization where these cheques are cleared for avoiding any fraud. These
cheques may be drawn on UBL, HBL, NBP, or any other bank of Pakistan. The
respective officer collects all cheques and enters them in clearing Register. Then
officer put stamps on these cheques and arrange these cheques of different
banks and prepares schedule for them. These cheques are sent to clearing
house. Exchange of cheques takes place through NIFT.

Inward Clearing Books:

The bank uses this book to record all the cheques that are received by any bank
in the first clearing. All details of the cheques are recorded in this book.
Outward Clearing Book:
The bank uses outward clearing register to record all the details of the cheques
that the bank has delivered to other banks for clearing.
Cash Department
In cash department both deposits and withdrawals go side by side. This
department works under the accounts department and deals with cash deposits
and payments. This department maintains the following sheets, books, ledger of
account etc.

3.5 Comments on the organizational structure
The MCB Jalal Pur Jattan Branch is contributing much in the economy as well as
society in which it is working. The customer of the area in which bank is located
are much satisfied because employees are very cooperative and give the
information related the customer problem in a friendly manner. But the most
critical thing I observed is that the dissatisfaction of staff with this organization
because of poor promotion strategy and congesting or a small building. They
complaint that there are too little incentives are paid. Overcrowded or overloaded
workload in many departments of the organization is just an extra burden for the
employees.

4.4 Detail description of departments

Account department:
Every transaction which takes place in all departments is forwarded to account
department so this department tally all such transaction and maintain ledger of
each department. The branch where I complete my internship Mr. Bisharat was
performing such activities.
Remittances

Customer service department:

Unfortunately I did not more work (except fed) in cash department due to the
restriction from manager side. He did not allow the internee to go in the cash
department. So I have no idea about the procedure of cash deposit or any other
cash department related things.

4.7 Summary of learning

4.7.1 Skills & Qualifications gained from internship
Before doing internship I have never gone to bank and no idea about procedure
that use in bank earlier. But now I have completed my internship program that
helps me how to change my behavior according to the environment e.g.
I have gained practical experience and a lot of information through
internship.
Through workings of many departments. I observed the procedures,
before doing this we just say its very easy but now I observed all
activities and I can say its really difficult.
I have observed different application of accounting practically
How officer deal with customer in a friendly manner.
How to work under pressure
How to manage the office
My communication skill improved during internship program
Gain work experience practically

[Anum rafique] 08020920-035

[FMAS] Page 50

MCB
Level of efficiency increase.
Respect the work regulations
Time management, internship makes me punctual
fulfill the instructions of your advisor as well as you can
Perform your work in a healthy and secure mode

4.7.2 Kind of responsibilities undertaken during

4.7.3 Internship influence the Future career plans

Internship is necessary for the completion of degree, but I have learnt many
things which will be helpful for me in future.
Before applying for a new job, internship proved to be more useful
& beneficial for me

[Anum rafique] 08020920-035

[FMAS] Page 51

MCB
This practical knowledge would supports in dealing with people as
well as ease to understand the behavior of customer and institution
relationship.
This internship proved as a great personality developer for me in following ways
which could leave a great impact on my future;

Gained work experience

Got confidence of doing job
Help me to decide weather banking would be suitable for me or not.
Learnt how to deal with customer
How class room knowledge implement in practical life
How to do work in stress environment
Behavior with senior and junior as well

As a result I would surely be getting a greater position in my future career.

4.7.4 Correlation of activities with classroom work

Basic purpose of internship is to apply the knowledge practically that we have
learnt in class rooms. Classroom knowledge little bit related with practical
knowledge. In class rooms teachers told us about the terms & conditions as well
as the procedures of doing work but there is some differs from theoretical
knowledge. Class room Lectures cant give us real view but this internship
helped us to understand the reality of what we study in classrooms. As a student
of business administration it would be perfect for me mean I have seen
practically and implement which I learnt in class room. Basic things that I have
already read in class room are correlated with those activities that I have
performed during internship. Our teachers used examples of different banks
while delivering their lectures. Mostly activities relate with subject Money &
Banking and fundamental of accounts as well. In which we study about credit
and debit the account, make entries, demand draft, pay order, different types of
cheques & other product & services of banks.

conclusion of the report:

5.1 Conclusion

As I have studied and analyzed MCB Bank Ltd I found out that this a good bank
as its working, management is concerned.
First of all the reason of this is that there is no directive style in the management
of MCB and which shows that there is decentralization in the Bank and every
branch manager can take decision according to the situation.
MCB is providing their customers with wide range of services including online
banking, virtual banking and some of their new products in the pipeline; include
ATM network etc shows that MCB Bank is taking good care of their customers.
MCB Bank made heavy investments, towards enhancing its capabilities in the
area of automation and technology. MCB is well positioned to meet client needs,
with improved competitive advantage.

5.2 general observations:

During my internship at MCB I have observed that some people are over
burdened and some people used to sit idle for most of their working hours. There
should be work load analysis for all employees and work load should be
distributed respectively keeping in view the capacities and capabilities of
employees. The bank should improve its online transaction system and intranet.
As system failure is encountered often.
New marketing strategies should be developed to attract customers. A research
cell should continuously try to gather information about the present action of its
competitors and their expected future actions. So in this way more effective

[Anum rafique] 08020920-035

[FMAS] Page 53

MCB
strategies can be formulated.
The performance reward linkages should be made strong as it said, A happy
employee deliver more than he receive from organization. MCB Bank limited
should become specific about its competitors, so that it can understand who its
competitor is in the first degree and who is in the second degree. Then the firstdegree competitors should be watched closely. MCB should continuously
conduct its financial analysis and compare it with that of other banks. In this way
consciousness about the banks financial matters will tend to improve. More
training and development programs should be launched in order to clear the
concepts of employees about new products and banking techniques.
Internees are not considered as a part of the organization so are not allotted as
such assignments. Theres no proper arrangement for guidance of internees.
And from the financial and when I conduct comparative analysis with other banks
I found that it is somewhat better than others, so I can say that MCB Bank is
performing very well.

5.3 SWOT analysis

Strength:
MCB is the first Pakistani privatized bank and because of its quality
management, marketing, innovation in products and services is
performing well in financial market.
Has established a good reputation in the banking market
Flexibility with the changing environment
Safe and secure investments venture
Innovative and new technology adapter
Well Equipped and fully secure environment

[FMAS] Page 54

MCB
Modernized banking (online + Internet)
MCB Mainly operated by manshas group.
The bank has efficient IT infrastructure and networ4k of on line
branches.
MCB is in its over 63 years of operation. It has a network of over 1,000
branches all over the country with business establishments in
Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Bahrain.
Being the senior bank in Pakistan it is highly recognized all over
Pakistan and it is very well known among its customers
Strong customer relationship.
MCB is also providing mobile banking for best satisfaction of customer.
At present it has the largest ATM network in Pakistan.
The bank has huge amount of assets
The bank is involved in different investing activities where there is a
huge amount of output available for the bank that bank can use for its
growth
MCB has a very senior and dedicated work force as well as young and
creative staff; those are big asset for the bank.
Weakness:
The majority of people are not well aware about the products of MCB.
Therefore it should advertise extensively especially RTC and Master
Cards.
In MCB there is lack of specialized skill because of job rotation policy
of human resource department. The bank should concentrate upon
increasing its abilities on individual service basis.
Mismanagement of time is another big mistake in MCB branches, the
bank official time of closing is 5:30pm but due mismanaging of time

[Anum rafique] 08020920-035

[FMAS] Page 55

MCB
allocation and work the staff is normally on their seats till 7:00 or 8:00
clock.
Slow improvement and acceptance of technological changes
More emphasis on deposit accumulation and less on their mobilization
Networking problems regarding ATM
Weak MIS interconnectivity among the Division
No mobile ATM services in rural areas
Though Muslim Commercial Bank installed computer yet the system
has not totally shifted on computer. Manual procedure is still there
hence computer facility is not fully availed. It should be fully availed
and system should be fully computerized.
The large number of customers of MCB is uneducated.
The old staff resists adopting change like adoption of new technology.
Less job satisfaction of employees.
Promotions generally on seniority basis.
As most of the employees are young they have more tendencies to
switch the organization and to seek more opportunities.
Opportunity:
Greater potential and opportunities for Credit Division if Liberal Policies
being adopted.
Can grab more market share for its RTCs, remittances and foreign
exchange department through effective promotional and liberal policies.
Adoption of information technology will improve the customer services.
Establishing more Foreign Branches
Local Setup should be expanded.
Internet Banking
Some more innovative products and services should be introduced.

[Anum rafique] 08020920-035

[FMAS] Page 56

MCB
Since the Bank has an extensive networks of branches so if the bank can
be able to computerize all of its branches then it can be able to capture

The bank has already large number of customers by providing better and
better services to their existing customers, but word of mouth can also be
helpful in increasing the number of customers to have a competitive
advantage over its growing number of competitors.
Since the Bank is earning a lot of profit per annum so by increasing the
employees salaries and providing incentives the Bank can produce more
loyal employees that can increase the productivity.

6. Recommendations:

From the Quantum of the profit and its financial data it can be easily
judged that after privatization, MCB is performing well. Its deposits are
growing day by day and so its profitability. The controlling body is
responsible for the productive performance of the Bank.
Following are my observation and suggestion to improve the efficiency for
the development of the bank.
Bank should give some more incentive to its employees in order to
remove the conflict between lower and higher officers and should try to
improve the working condition of the bank.
As such system should be designed that every employee who has some
problems with his officers can communicate it to the higher management
and some steps must be taken to improve that.
Recruitments should be strictly on merit basis and induction should be
after proper and extensive training.
Old and lazy staff should be replaced by young, qualified and energetic
staff.
Foreign branches should be opened in order to capture the international
market and to earn international repute for the bank.
Working environment, equipment, furniture and staff dressing should be
according to the modern banking style.
Proper attention should be paid to upgrade customer services.
Bank should adopt the global organizational banking structure to meet the

Internees should also be considered part of the organization, and should
be given some practical work as well in order to give them a more detailed
knowledge regarding work.
IT department should be made efficient. Computer software should be well
maintained and monitored in order to prevent delays in work. Software
problems should be managed.
