Delta Farmers Markets

Bringing communities together

to celebrate all things local

verything you need for a delicious

weekend begins at the North Delta
and Tsawwassen Farmers Markets.
Engage your senses and let the heavenly
aroma of fresh baking and the taste of
seasonal delights transport you. Let the
sounds of lively music and happy market
goers remind you of how much there is to
truly celebrate. With new and expanded
market locations, an impressive lineup
of all-ages entertainment, plus a record
number of vendors, your weekends
with family and friends are sure to be
spectacular.
Over the years, the farmers market
concept has evolved from shopping
experience to multi-faceted community
event, keeping a focus on local, organic
and sustainable. With stepped-up
entertainment and more activities than
ever, this years markets promise to
be celebrated gatherings where local
merchants, farmers and artisans share
their best with residents and tourists
alike.

EXPERIENCE

DELTA

MAY 2016

The Delta Farmers Markets are the

ideal place to take parents, grandparents
and kids for a fun-filled day, where
everyone can engage in something
amazing. We work hard to find ways
to create an expanded and diversified
market experience, notes Anne Janzen
of Farm Fresh Events. As much as we
build the market, the community shapes
the market. Listening to what visitors
need or want to see at their markets is
very important. Janzen appreciates the
enthusiastic response from customers
who request vendors or offer their ideas.
For example, this years markets reflect
a greater demand for gluten-free and
vegan options, as well as more artisan
food vendors representing ethnic
cuisines. Market participants include
farmers, food trucks, artisans, local chefs,
bakers, craftspeople and jewelers.
Moving from a parking lot area to a
fabulous brand-new outdoor celebration
plaza beside the newly opened North
Delta Recreation Centre marks an exciting

turning point for the North Delta Farmers

Market. Perfectly situated next to a grassy
amphitheatre area with a beautiful stone
stage, a waterpark, and new playground,
the location alone is a draw. On a hot
day, families can swim in the outdoor
pool, voted one of the best in the Lower
Mainland, then head over to the market.
With so much going on at the rec
centre, a trip to the market becomes
an extension of a fabulous day, notes
Janzen. And while there are always
activities to take in, you never need a
reason to just lay on the grass and watch
the world go by. Just come to enjoy the
smells that waft through the air, sip on a
wonderful drink, or pick up some flowers
to take home. The market experience
builds on the many family-oriented
events that are already happening in the
community.
For the first time, North Delta and
Tsawwassen Farmers Markets will
have featured vendors hosting
wine, beer and cider tasting,

Dont forget to visit our ONE20 Liquor Store right next door,
with an excellent selection of local craft beer, VQA wines and spirits.

showcasing the Lower

Mainlands newest offerings.
We hope to have both
samples and sales of locally produced beer,
cider and wine at the market soon. Guests
can also expect more rotation of vendors.
Rotating food trucks creates an element of
surprise, notes Janzen, who encourages
the community to check their website
and Facebook page for updates on their
favourite businesses. With shopping local
and organic a key focus at the market, onsite food and chef demonstrations provide
tips to inspire your next meal.
Visitors to North Delta Farmers
Market can enjoy live music presented
by the Corporation of Delta at the newly
developed plaza. Two scheduled Concerts
in the Park include local groups Astros
Collar on June 26 and Bright Young Things
on Aug 7. Visitors are encouraged to bring
the whole family and their out-of-town
guests and celebrate special occasions.
Theres no need to head out of the city
when all your entertainment is easily
accessible in one place with free parking.
We are always looking to partner
with other community groups to create
new and exciting activities that will appeal
to a wide audience, notes Janzen. One
such successful collaboration has been
with Watershed Artworks Society whose
beautiful storefront is located in the
North Delta Rec Centre. Whole Lotta Art
& Food on June 12 will bring together

their fine artisans, customers and market

patrons, creating more variety and more
opportunity for all. When we collaborate,
we always plan for more visitors, more
vendors and more food trucks on those
days, explains Janzen.
Creating alliances with other
community groups creates a win-win
situation for the community. Sharing
community events, particularly through
social media such as Facebook and Twitter,
is a great way to reach out to residents
and visitors. We strive to be neighbourly,
aware of happenings at such organizations
as Delta Community Animal Shelter,
Burns Bog, Delta Assist, Earthwise Society,
Corporation of Delta and more. Working
together, we help each other, notes
Janzen. Over the years, Farm Fresh Events
has also worked closely with Earthwise
Society to help organize vendors and
promote key events including the Olde
Fashioned Christmas Market, Heirloom
Tomato Fest, Spice Road Market, Beefriendly events and more.
Farmers markets have grown
immensely popular in recent years. Most
of us are initially drawn to the idea of a
local market, the romance of it all. Over
time, however, many of us come to realize
that how we spend our money makes
a huge difference in our communities.
Voting with your fork is an idea that has
taken hold across the Lower Mainland, as
our awareness of the actual costs of food

production, including transportation,

labour and environmental impact,
continues to grow. Our food choices help
shape the communities we live in.
When we think of local and
sustainable, its important to expand our
definition, notes Janzen. The concept of
local means more than just food, and
extends to people who are interested
in doing something good for their
community, through sharing, volunteering
or participating. Seeing the market
from a holistic standpoint, with people,
products and the environment vitally
interconnected, helps create a vision for
how the market can evolve.

Tsawwassen Farmers Market now
centrally located at 12th and 53A Street
in the courtyard parking lot of RE/

generously provided free parking across
the street.
This wheelchair-accessible venue
is contained by surrounding greenery,
yet tents are visible from the street. The
change from Saturday to Friday was a
carefully considered plan. This new time
offers many advantages, notes Janzen.
Students can enjoy after school activities,
and families can come by to pick up

some gourmet entertaining over
the weekend. With many families

Saturdays filled with activities,

Friday is the ideal time to kick
start the weekend, and meet up with
friends and neighbours.
Vendors offering organic, locally
grown produce such as that grown
by Earthwise Farm in Tsawwassen
are always a draw for residents and
visitors alike. One of the markets most
popular items, non-GMO Chilliwack
corn, is back by popular demand.
Once again, the Tsawwassen Farmers
Market will feature locally grown
produce from participants in the
Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU)
Tsawwassen First Nation Farm School,
a first of its kind program that brings
together sustainable agriculture and
traditional indigenous food systems
to build community. Food is grown
on a 20-acre farm on TFN lands and
features a traditional medicine garden,
mixed fruit orchard, and organic
market garden.
Do you have produce, artisanal items
or special food products to sell? Farm Fresh
Events encourages anyone interested in
volunteering or becoming a vendor at the
North Delta or Tsawwassen Farmers Markets
to get in touch. As with all BC Farmers
Markets, vendors must make it-bake it-or
grow it in order to qualify for participation.
Applications are accepted throughout the
year, and can be found at their website.

Muddy River Landing

Celebrating local

artisans in a
vibrant community

upporting local farms, retailers

and artisans isnt something Delta
residents only do during summer
market days. While thousands of visitors
make a special trip to experience one
of the lower mainlands most popular
attractions, eager to buy one-of-a-kind
products and fresh produce that Delta
is known for, those that live here make
shopping local year round their passion.
Long after the market tents have come
down and the last trucks have rolled out
of town, the community remains loyal to
the businesses that make Delta thrive.
Muddy River Landing joins other
local merchants whose shops line the
busy market circuit and carry products
that are an extension of the market itself.
Local and original, their items are as
enticing to market goers as the highquality crafts, clothing and gourmet food
items theyll find under each awning.

DELTA

MAY 2016

Market days have been important to

the growing store who open their doors
to market visitors, encouraging them
to step inside or explore the tables of
goods set up outside. Its important
for merchants to think outside the box.
Visitors and locals are not after cookie
cutter products. Offering original items
that celebrate our diversity and talent
creates a more vibrant and memorable
shopping experience, co-owner Cathie
Friebel explains.
When Muddy River opened a few
years ago ago in the heart of Ladner
Village, they captivated residents and
visitors alike with their eclectic range
of local items. What started as a popup store in Tsawwassen Town Centre
Mall quickly grew to be a favourite
destination, attracting repeat customers
from as far as North Vancouver and
Vancouver Island. We wanted to
create a Canadiana west coast feel, a
comfortable place where people
feel like theyre entering a
friends home, Friebel

explains. From handmade leather

journals and jewellery to original artwork
by local artists including Anita de Vos,
Gary Nay and Jan Rankin to name a few,
they filled a niche that many had been
searching for.
We have a lot of reasons to
celebrate our First Nations, notes Friebel,
yet we dont see many of their finely
crafted products outside of Gastown.
The Muddy River Landing First Nations
area of the store features spirit boxes,
frames, sunglasses, journals, textiles, and
a new line of moccasins. Importantly,
artisans receive residuals on sales. While
the owner admits she could buy from
suppliers who mass produce goods, she
prefers to support local artisans and keep
the price points low, even if engaging in
fair trade means a lower profit.
Shoppers will also find handmade
home decor and bath and body products
from Delta, Vancouver Island, Kelowna
and beyond. The labels on their signature
soaps from Courtney feature Ladner
photography. A man cave area in the
back of the store carries
collectibles, vintage
bags and clocks, and

novelty items include yo-yos and slinkies.

Adding to the eclectic assortment are cedar
wood postcards and Edward Gorey colouring
books. Locally made stencilled signs and
wooden jewellery boxes from Vancouver
Island artists are also for sale. Supporting the
Barefoot Venus line, featuring Vanilla Shake
creamy cleansing wash and Coconut bliss
Mango butter bath bliss, enables Friebel to

empower other female entrepreneurs.

Visitors to Ladner are often surprised to
discover the unique treasures that line the
shelves of local merchants, and coming home
with something handmade makes shopping
extra special. From retro and vintage to
upscale and ultra-modern, the quirky array of
goods reflects the fun, feel-good community
attitude that locals have come to love.

Delivering a British Isles

seaside links golf experience

Kings Links by the sea

unny Delta has long set the gold

standard for golf courses in the
Lower Mainland with its panoramic
views and beautifully manicured fairways.
Located adjacent to Boundary Bay and
just ten minutes from the Alex Fraser
Bridge and the George Massey Tunnel,
Kings Links par 72 championship golf
course is one of the communitys hidden
gems. Take the drive down a country road
and discover a place where wind sweeps
across the fescue grasses, and coastal
mountains are the backdrop to a pictureperfect day.
Kings Links by the sea 6,865-yard
championship golf course is built in the
tradition of seaside links courses found
throughout the British Isles and caters
to all skill levels. Undulating greens,
well kept fairways and windswept
terrain bring a distinct Scottish Golfing
experience to Delta. While not a long
course, changeable winds demand a

skilful approach and careful planning.

Most Kings Links members are higher
handicap, above 10s, but still find the
course comfortable and come out to play
2-3 times per week. Over the years, the
course has adapted to be more userfriendly, with widened fairways and some
fescue cut back.
A big part of the golf experience is
being surrounded by nature and enjoying
a great view. When the Newells, owners
of Kings Links, planned the construction
of their new clubhouse, their goal was to
maximize the 360-degree view and create
a homelike ambiance that their members
would love. Partnering with local builder
Brian Hilder, they set out to painstakingly
plan every feature.
Oversized floor-to-ceiling windows
in the clubhouse capture views of Mount
Baker, Boundary Bay and the San Juan
Islands, and a hidden hydraulic system
helps protect against winds that blow

off the sea across the open course. The

clubhouses Scottish theme can be
seen in the dark greens and rich wood
paneling, and an oversized fireplace and
richly padded leather chairs create a
British pub aesthetic. A waiting area with
armchairs and a dramatic high bookcase
add a cozy feel. Other features include
an outdoor 80-capacity deck, natural
wood oak brushed flooring, and a unique
ceiling support of galvanized steel beams
and cedar wood. Framed pictures of
famous golf tournaments, many donated
by members who have played or caddied
on tours in the US, line the walls.
We continue to tweak the features
of the clubhouse and the course itself,
keeping an eye on ways to make our
members experience wonderful, notes
Maria Newell. The chefs in the clubhouses
modern full kitchen offer a rotating
seasonal menu featuring locally
sourced ingredients, including

Urban Bee Supplies

Caring for bees

is easy & surprisingly

beneficial to all

oing from taking care of peoples

hair needs to caring for the
requirements of bees was not
such a leap for Urban Bee Supplies owner
Lindsay Dault. Eight years later, her
enthusiasm for beekeeping is not only
contagious, it hasnt waned a bit.
Beekeeping is like meditation
for me. When Im stressed out I put on
my suit, get my hive tool and go do an
inspection, says Dault. The minute I
open the hive its just me and the bees.
I listen and watch and get caught up in
whats happening. Above that, honey
bees are incredibly fascinating there is so
much to learn. They are the most amazing
creatures in the world.
The work and education that Dault
and beekeepers across Canada provide
is vital to the survival of bees. Honeybees
do much more than just make honey.
One third of our diet depends on honey
bee pollination. Honey bees provide 80

16

EXPERIENCE

DELTA

MAY 2016

per cent of pollination for vegetable, fruit,

seed and flower crops. They also pollinate
the forage crops fed to dairy and meat
animals.
If our winged friends dont have
access to nesting sites, protein and
carbohydrates, they cannot survive.
We need a large variety of food to
meet our nutritional needs, and the bees
are no different. The best thing people
can do to help the bees is plant food for
them... in the form of flowers, says Dault.
Our bees are all kept in urban areas,
where the bees have a large variety of
food to choose from. Because of this, our
bees are incredibly healthy and we dont
have to deal with many of the issues that
large-scale pollinators do.
In addition to supplying the sweet
substance and a huge array of other
products, Urban Bee also teaches many
local families how to get started in honey
production. The avid beekeeper loves

sharing her knowledge about bees.

We offer a few different courses,
weekend cram sessions, BCHPA certified
courses, wax and lotions classes, and
private beekeeping consultations, says
Dault. All our beekeeping courses are
recommended to anyone wanting to get
into the hobby, as there is so much to
learn.

Artists in the Village

s Picasso famously once said,

Every child is an artist, the
problem is staying an artist
when you grow up. One of the best ways
to unleash our creativity as adults is by
surrounding ourselves with like-minded
people who support and encourage each
other.
When Mary Ann Burrows founded
Artists in the Village Society in fall
2014 with help from other local artists,
including The Crows Nest Art Studio
owner Megan Anderson, the timing
couldnt have been more perfect. With
a goal to help create an environment
that fostered an artistic culture in the
village, she set out to bring kindred spirits
together to inspire creativity within each
other and the community through artistic
connection, expression and awareness.
Little did Mary Ann know that her
non-profit society would quickly grow
to over 100 members, a groundswell
of artists working in all mediums. The
result was a creative tsunami that

Creating artistic community

through shared inspiration

Ladner continues to experience today.

An emerging sense of who we are and
what we can be has added a new energy
and dimension to an already unique and
vibrant community.
The volunteer run society offers key
benefits to both artists and businesses
alike. Importantly, artists have a chance
to get out of their studios and network.
Mary Ann explains Our society provides
a welcome gathering for those who
value creativity, opportunity, and
sharing knowledge, in a respectful and
supportive space. Monthly meetings
provide opportunities to learn from
fellow artists and guest speakers, while
year-round special events engage
the public, building awareness and
appreciation of the arts. Social media
plays a key role in promoting the societys
events and members work.
Artists of all levels are invited to
sketch with Artists in the Village painting
and drawing group who organize
monthly plein air painting excursions

around Delta. Businesses are invited to

host a location in exchange for a warm
cup of coffee. Sweet Sunday Sketch
encourages artists to sketch, take a photo
and send their work to be featured on the
societys website.
Last years inaugural Grand Prix
of Art presented by Travellingbrush.
com and hosted by Artists in the
Village and the Corporation of Delta
marked a turning point for the society
and the community as a whole. Made
possible through partnership with
numerous local organizations, the muchanticipated outdoor art event attracted
an astounding 100 artists from across
the lower mainland, eager to participate
in the three hour plein air painting
competition. Visitors engaged with
artists painting at select locations around
Ladner and were also given the chance to
view final works for purchase at an exhibit
held later the same day. This years
Grand Prix of Art will take place on
July 17 and promises to draw even

Another key event was the Shine Art
Show & Sale organized by a passionate
team of volunteers last November. Members
working in a variety of mediums, from oil
and acrylics to encaustics and wood, brought
their collective talent together under one
roof in the bright and spacious Celebration
Hall of Ladner United Church.
The Society is encouraged by the
growing number of generous companies
who support keeping art alive in the
community. Benefits to businesses include
prime sponsorship opportunities, a link to

the website, recognition on social media, and

the opportunity to work with local artists
and contribute to the cultural growth of the
village.
As an experienced businesswoman

Mary Ann brings vision and passion to
Artists in the Village. She is the co-founder

family foundation providing yearly grants

Ladner Artisan Chocolates

An artisans approach to chocolate

making in the heart of the village

ts only fitting that an oldfashioned family run chocolate

shop would find a home in
one of the Lower Mainlands quaintest
communities. Step inside and feast your
eyes on baskets filled with handmade
creamy delights. From their specialty
styled truffles to bark, tiger butter and
wine-based jellies and syrups, youre
sure to discover a heavenly taste to melt
your troubles away. The newly expanded
business located in the retail storefront of
Grapes 4 U, the owners award-winning
wine u-brew hobby shop, makes this
location a one stop for lifes simple
pleasures.
Most people dont consider opening
a chocolate shop after retiring, but for
chocolatier Laurence Catterall, his passion
for food comes naturally. He fondly
recalls his days in England exploring
the good life with his fellow fat lads, a
group of friends with a shared passion
for all things gourmet. Exploring and
sampling cheeses, sausages, and wine,
they would often cover several towns in
one day, shopping, tasting and critiquing
their finds. Catterall notes that on these
journeys he was surprised to discover
how so-called high quality chocolates

often fell short. How a chocolate looks on

the outside is not always an indicator of
taste. His curiosity would later lead him
to explore the art of chocolate making
in greater depth and learn the craft
firsthand.
Today, the chocolatier takes
special pride in explaining to guests his
artisanal approach to quality and detail,
noting there are many components that
contribute to the experience of enjoying
chocolate. Structure, texture, design, and
production method are all important,
and temperature, timing and sequence
are critical to producing exceptional
taste. For example, to make a chocolate
ganache consisting of butter and cream,
the process involves dry heat to melt the
chocolate, followed by cooling, melting a
bit more, then cooling correctly. Effective
tempering is essential to creating an
optimal texture.
The craft of making chocolate needs
to be experienced hands on, explains
the mostly self-taught chocolatier. Trying
new approaches, learning and watching
are important. A handmade artisanal
approach means not working with large
scale molds and equipment like those
used by mainstream industry chocolate

makers. Its about producing smaller

batches using fresh premium ingredients
with no additives to yield one-of-kind
results with a shorter shelf life.
People come in with preconceived
ideas about how chocolates should
taste, notes Catterall. They might
normally prefer 70% cacao or think
white chocolate is too sweet, yet they
are often surprised when they try our
chocolates. He encourages customers to
be open and try something new. With an
impressive array of sweet and savoury
combinations, with truffle flavours such
as milk chocolate salted caramel, dark
chocolate raspberry rolled in coconut,
and dark chocolate mocha, visitors are
sure to find something they love. Take a
boxed selection home, or let them put
together the perfect artisanal gift basket
for a wedding, corporate gift or any
special occasion.
When it comes to expanding his
product line, experimentation with
flavours is important. New chocolate
combinations we may see soon include
smoked hickory salt and habenero. New
products include a coconut bar, along
with new molded and hand rolled variety
truffles. His signature product? A white

chocolate lemon truffle consisting of chocolate cream ganache

dipped in white Belgian chocolate, reminiscent of lemon meringue
pie, is a customer favourite.
As business grows, so do plans to reach out to the community
with special events and workshops. Future directions include
chocolate experience workshops for those interested in trying their
hand at the craft. There are also plans for carrying their own brand
of fairtrade organic locally roasted coffee in store, and exploring
opportunities to partner with local businesses to fill their gift baskets
with complementary products.

Earthwise Society

ucked away in Tsawwassens

Boundary Bay, far from the noise
of the city, lies a beautiful threeacre natural treasure of biodiversity that
has inspired a new generation to live
better. A magical place where adults
come to re-establish their connection
with the earth, and children gaze in
wonder at the beauty of the flowers and
blue sky above. A sacred space where
everyone is invited to come together
to learn, grow, and take responsibility
for cultivating a more sustainable
community.
The Earthwise Society which
operates the Boundary Bay Earthwise
Garden and organic Earthwise Farm plays
a vital role in educating residents and
visitors alike on models for sustainable

The two acre Earthwise organic
demonstration farm which models small
agriculture for urban communities,
reflects todays larger trend towards
community-based farming. With growing
public awareness of the ecological and
economic impact of food production,
many of us are seeking local food
alternatives that are healthier and
sustainable. The popularity of farmers
markets, along with an increased
pressure for grocers to stock local goods,
also points to this trend. Importantly, the
farm experience helps us see firsthand
where our food comes from and shows us
how we too can grow our food chemicalfree. Local fresh sheets indicating which
certified organic produce is in season are
available at the farm store. A Community

landscape. A visit there will allow you to
explore native plants, a butterfly garden
and more. Learn Earthwise gardening
tips, such as composting, natural pest

species and reduce water usage.
Education is the cornerstone of
the Earthwise Society. Through our

we are cultivating a new generation of

For over a decade, The Delta Bike
Company or Delta Bikes located in
the heart of Tsawwassen has offered
more to cyclists than just service and
convenience. Situated in the hub of
Tsawwassens bustling coffee shops and
just minutes from Centennial Beach, its
a landmark location where cyclists of all
levels come to see whats new, discover
the best routes, and plan their day with a
free Delta cycling map. Locals appreciate
the convenience of having Delta Bikes so
close to where they live. And although
the vast majority of customers live
nearby, others come from across the

Sincere customer service is what

Cycling has grown in popularity

on
GSTrebate
rental properties

ith the very hot housing

market in Vancouver and
across the Lower Mainland,
individuals are turning more towards
establishing rental properties across
varying neighbourhoods to earn cash
flow on their properties while they let
their investments increase in value. We,
at Pacific Chartered Advisors LLP, find
that many people who are investing in
the real estate market either through
individual holdings or within a corporate
structure are being caught off-guard by
a little known technicality within the GST
rebate system upon purchase of a new
rental property.
The issue at hand is that many
investors who are purchasing new
residential properties with the intent to
use as a rental property, may actually
be under-paying upon finalizing the
transaction. The reason for this is that
developers will often include a credit
for a GST rebate in the final price which,
if the investor is purchasing for rental
purposes, they are not entitled to receive.
The harm to the investor is that the CRA
can assess for the inappropriately claimed
new housing rebate plus interest and
penalties. While many investors currently
may not be faced with this problem,
remember that the CRA may come back

through a new housing rebate audit

several years after closing.
For the average real estate investor
this is often an honest mistake as
normally, in most sale agreements, the
developer usually assumes that the buyer
is eligible for the housing rebate and
includes the rebate in the stated purchase
price. The developer will often do this
as it is to their advantage since it allows
them to be more competitive in the
marketplace and advertise the properties
for sale at a lower price. For purchasers
who are investing in rental real estate this
places them at a disadvantage.
When buying new real estate with
the intent to rent, under the Excise Tax
Act of Canada (GST/HST), the purchaser
is ineligible for the new housing rebate
as the property will not be used as a
primary place of residence. The purchaser
could qualify for the rental rebate, but
unfortunately there is no ruling that
allows a developer to include this credit
in the final sales price. An application
for the GST rebate can only be made
after the sale has been completed.
For the individual investor, this is
disadvantageous as the property must
be paid for in full, a separate application
submitted for the rebate after purchase,
followed by a waiting period for the

application to be approved.
With the CRA scrutinizing even more
frequently the numerous transactions
that are occurring on a daily basis, it is
important that the individual investor
be prepared for any potential errors with
the GST rebate. To avoid any unnecessary
penalties, the correct approach is to pay
the full price plus GST on closing then
separately apply to CRA for the rental
rebate after the purchase has been
finalized and wait for CRA approval.
While this approach is tedious and
places more strain on cash flow, it will
save concern about being subject to
repaying the GST rebate plus interest
and penalties down the road. As always,
remember to consult a qualified tax
professional with regards to potential
exposure.

Alongside You programs are founded
on the principle that psychological care is
just as important as physical care. When
we intentionally set aside time in our lives
to create, we can significantly impact our

to manage a range of issues including

post-traumatic stress, depression, chronic
pain, psychosis, and schizophrenia to

was designed to offer an inclusive and

extension to all their programs.
For Andrew and his wife Meg, both

creative, their business fulfills their vision
for integrating art and healing. The
Creative Arts Program features activities
designed for all abilities and comfort
levels. Open studio time is available to
everyone, regardless of age, ability or
diagnosis, to experiment and have fun.
Specialized programs are also available
to provide more accessible and suitable
options for those individuals with unique
needs or challenges.
We are not art therapists, explains
Neufeld. Unlike traditional art therapy
programs which guide patients through
healing, individuals come to the studio
to simply create, relax and express

themselves. The therapeutic element is

the expression of art. Interaction with
others fosters personal growth and
builds self-confidence. In the studio, its
not unusual to see seniors, teens, local
artists and children working side by side
which creates a diverse and dynamic
environment.
Neufeld notes, Our brains and
bodies have an innate ability to heal us.
It is about finding the right opportunity
for that to happen. When we create,
we are encouraged to express our
thoughts and emotions, and find a path
to transformation and wellness. Art can
help those struggling with family issues
or facing emotional difficulties such as
the death of a loved one. For example,
learning to scrapbook to document
someones life can offer tremendous
comfort and healing.

Andrew and his wife fulfilled their

Houwelings Tomatoes

Strengthening local economy with

a vision for sustainability

upporting local food producers is

an idea that has gained momentum
in recent years. Influenced by the
Canadian bestseller The 100-mile Diet,
many have taken up the challenge to seek
locally sourced food, resulting in a greater
demand for fresher and tastier produce.
The question is, how can we enjoy superior
products year round when we depend on a
northern crop cycle? In northern climates,
nursery planting typically happens in
December and January and harvesting
begins at the end of March. Products are
carried through to the end of November,
leaving three to four months with virtually
no production. These holes are typically
filled with imported products from the US
or Mexico.
With 10 acres under lights in winter,
Houwelings Tomatoes family-owned
greenhouse nursery feeds a huge
appetite for local freshness. Originally,
proprietor Casey Houweling and his
father Cornelius, a hard-working Dutch
immigrant and horticulturist, purchased
their Delta farmland in the mid 80s

40

EXPERIENCE

DELTA

MAY 2016

and ran a 6-acre greenhouse to grow

beefsteak tomatoes, one of the largest
of its kind. To learn the art and science of
growing, Casey spent time in Holland, the
mecca of the nursery industry. Within 10
years, Houwelings mastery under glass
hydroponic greenhouses operations
covered 50 acres, including both tomato
production and seedling propagation.
Why is local better? A shortened
supply chain is key. While you can grow
the same product in Mexico under lights,
tomatoes must be picked a week earlier
to allow for ripening and transportation
which compromises taste. Visit any
farmers market and youll experience
the delicious difference. All things being
equal, youve got a better chance of
delivering a superior product when
youre that much closer. Houwelings
tomatoes are picked at their peak and
transported to local stores within a few
days. Imported tomatoes are picked
prematurely, loaded onto trucks, and sent
to a processing facility where they are
exposed to ethylene, a natural ripening

gas. While colour breaks, flavours are

not well developed. Moreover, tomatoes
trucked long distances in cooled
chambers can also lose flavour.
While we are in the farming
business, we are not in the factory
farming business, notes Bell. Managing
the greenhouse operation is really
about managing climatic conditions.
We are trying our best to control the
environment, but were never replacing
the natural elements of growing. The idea
is to create an environment thats optimal
for plant and fruit growth. While solar
power options make sense for year-round
sunny tomato growing regions such as
California, there are other sustainability
options that are very important.
Houwelings computer controlled
irrigation designed to limit water usage is
key. Irrigation water not used by plants is
captured and reused so it doesnt simply
get washed out into the water table. We
can treat our irrigation water in a
managed system, so if there are
any issues, it doesnt recirculate

Delta Hospital
Auxiliary Society

n 2015, 500 Delta Hospital Auxiliary volunteers donated approximately 100,000 hours. Calculated at minimum wage, that
would be an awesome financial donation as well as the service it represents. Add to this the funds generated by the four
businesses run by our volunteers and we were able to fund and support programs, equipment and bursaries over the
past year of $750,000. These include the new Pre Admission Clinic, co-funded with the Foundation and slated to begin
construction in Spring, 2016 as well as a state of the art bus for Mountain View Manor - just approved. At the same time we
have to this point saved $1.9 million of the $2.4 we committed to raise toward the new diagnostic wing at Delta Hospital.
Pretty amazing accomplishments!

those at risk or with disabilities to live
independently in their own homes. This
service provides quick assistance wherever
personal support is needed, especially in
a medical emergency. The Lifeline Units
goal is to assist seniors and individuals
with disabilities to reside independently
with a medical alert system that works 24 hours a day, 365 days
a year.

Since 1977 the Auxiliary Gift Shop, and

its staff of enthusiastic volunteers, has
been selling personal essentials, gifts and
magazines to patients and staff in the
hospital.

Our monthly fees are very competitive. Please call the Delta Lifeline office for
further information. Any profit realized from Lifeline is reinvested into care
and comfort of Delta Hospital patients.

Thrift Store

The Dogwood Gift Shop, situated in the

main lobby of the hospital, is a little jewel.
It sparkles with a wonderful selection of
jewelry, clothing, accessories, handbags,
wallets, slippers, socks and giftware as well as knitted
items, toiletries, snacks and magazines. It has many
customers from within the hospital; staff, patients and
their visitors, but also a diverse group of shoppers who
make our Dogwood Gift Shop a regular stop for their
shopping needs.

For more than forty years the Auxiliary Thrift
Store has been a fixture in Ladner, providing
the stuff of life to residents and visitors to
Delta. Daily, dedicated volunteers sort,
price, display and sell gently used items of
household, clothing and furniture donated
mindfully by a generous community. On any
given day you might find a pair of teak and
leather chairs, an Alex Colville print, a faux
fur coat, a Jimmy Choo purse, a vintage LP or
book or a raku pottery vase with crackle glaze. Treasures are to be
found on a daily basis as well as reasonably priced items for ordinary household
needs. For many of our customers, its all about the thrill of the chase for that
unique item. Plus they are supporting our mission as all proceeds go to patient
care and comfort and leading edge medical equipment for Delta Hospital.
In 2015, the Delta Hospital Thrift Shop was voted the Best Thrift Shop in Delta by
the community!

The Courtyard Cafe in the main foyer of

Delta Hospital is another of the seven units
comprising the Delta Hospital Auxiliary.
The Cafe whose proceeds are invested to
support Delta Hospital is operated by the
Auxiliary.
The cafe provides a restful gathering
place for patients, visitors, staff and volunteers. Our
Cafe staff always offer conversation, smiles and a hearty,
imaginative menu at very reasonable prices. While you
sip your coffee, enjoy a sandwich or share a treat with a
friend, the Cafe area also invites you to experience the
peace and tranquility of the adjacent Courtyard Gardens;
a delightful search at one of the Vendors tables (another
program run by the Auxiliary); or a stroll through our
wonderfulGift Shop.
Check out the great daily specials at our COURTYARD CAFE!

into crops, notes Bell.

Treating water takes care of
any impurities, and irrigation
water also cuts down on fertilizer use as
well. Any fertilizer that plants dont use is
left in the water which allows irrigation
recipes to be topped up, thereby avoiding
agricultural run-off.
Houwelings also generates their own
power. Each of their two co-generation
natural gas combustion engines produces
4.4 megawatts of electricity, and the waste
by-product is heat and co2. The captured
heat warms greenhouses and the co2 is
used for plant fertilization. Condensate is
also produced in the process, producing
water for irrigation.
The companys significant investment
in the biological control of pests in their
herbicide-free greenhouses reduces the
need for pesticides. For example, micro
parasitic wasps help control whiteflies,
and natural substances such as cinnamon
and peppermint are also used. A closed
environment with a concentration of plants
allows for greater use of natural elements
and minimizes any risk to surrounding ecosystems.

Atlantic bumblebees are also

important at the nursery where all
pollination is done naturally. Worker bees,
like loyal foot soldiers, are brought in to
do their job, and beehives are carefully
protected to avoid any queen escapes.
Using bees for sustainable gardening
and farming is an idea Delta residents
embrace. Feed the Bees community
campaign fosters awareness of supporting
a healthy and sustainable bee population,
encouraging residents and businesses to
plant gardens that feed pollinators and
promote biodiversity. Earthwise Societys
Bee Friendly Plant Sale & Fair is also a
popular community event.
Houwelings Tomatoes reflect the care,
quality and mindset of a family-run business
with sustainable business practices that
reach beyond the environment. Creating
stronger communities by shortening supply
chains, engaging in local business, and
providing employment are all important.
We value being part of the community
and do our best to contribute, notes Chief
Marketing Officer David Bell. Look for
Houwelings Tomatoes at the Ladner Village
Market this summer!

Applewood Country Gifts

& Tea Room

A taste just like grandmas in the

heart of North Delta

ip from a fine bone China teacup and

let the sweet smell of baking take
you back to a simpler time. Discover
a place where families and friends gather
to celebrate lifes precious moments and
daily cares disappear like steam from a
kettle.
Applewood offers a quiet escape,
a place to unwind and unplug from
modern life. Every day we are discovered
by someone who is surprised to see an
old-fashioned tea room in the heart of
North Delta, notes owner Kym Sutton.
Traditions and spending time with family
and friends is what Applewood is all
about. Customers are invited to relax in a
peaceful ambiance, turn their phones off,
and enjoy some quiet time.
What started as a bakery by two
women entrepreneurs over 23 years ago
has become one of North Deltas best
kept secrets. As customers, Kym and her
husband were first drawn to the charms
of the bakery years ago. When youve
worked all week, done all the jobs around

the house, its the kind of place you can

go to and relax, notes Sutton. When a
for sale sign appeared one day, she knew
it was an opportunity she couldnt pass
up. Expanding to include a tea room
made perfect sense, and today their
lunch service and traditional tea draw
loyal customers from across the Lower
Mainland. This year Kym celebrates seven
years and the business has become a
labour of love.
Over the years, the Applewood
customer profile has changed. More
mothers are coming to enjoy the
Traditional Afternoon Tea for children,
instilling the value of quiet time for a
new generation. Elderly patrons engage
in lively discussions, comparing todays
dinner rules with those of the past.
Applewoods traditional homemade
favourites include sticky toffee pudding
and scones with the works, complete
with pot of jam and Devon cream.
Among the vast selection of black teas,
favourites include Buckingham Palace

Garden Party and Cream Earl Grey. Others

include Oolong, Jasmine with flowers
and Last Mango in Paris. Gluten-free tea
service is also available.
Applewood carries a range of
traditional tea items, including the
owners hand sewn tea cosies, kitchen
items, whimsical clocks, wall hangings,
and over 50 teas. Keeping grandparents
in mind, they also have a childrens gift
section. Staff keep an eye on the little
things that count, like anticipating what
regulars will order and selecting their
favourite teacup. Probably what Im
most proud of are the celebration of life
ceremonies here at Applewood, notes
Sutton, recalling one particular customer
who comes regularly to celebrate
her mothers life. Milestones such as
weddings, baby showers, graduation
parties and birthdays are also celebrated.
Customer service means simple things
like counting change back and showing
appreciation for our elderly customers.
