(This word is not from the vocabulary list.)

Origins:
Arachnid refers to any wingless, carnivorous arthropod such as spiders, scorpions, mites, and ticks. It originates in the story of
Arachne in Greek mythology.
Arachne, the most skillful weaver of Lydia, challenged Athena to a weaving contest. Athena wove the story of her competition with
Poseidon over the city of Athens, while Arachne chose to use stories about Zeus various affairs. Athena, enraged by the beauty of
Arachnes work and disgusted by her disrespect of Zeus, destroyed the tapestry and loom. Arachne felt no shame and believed this to
be her victory over the goddess. Athena touched Arachnes head, filling her with guilt but it was too much for her mortal mind. Griefstricken, Arachne hung herself. Athena took pity on Arachne and brought her back to life in the form of a spider so she could continue
her passion for weaving.
