SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE

-Action is being done within speaking moment


In the simple present tense use verb with s and verb with out s
(Vs, Vo)
-(Vs) is only for third person singular while (Vo) is for 1 st, 2nd, and 3rd
person plural
Pattern: SUBJECT + MAIN VERB
Examples:
He/She jumps over the fence. (Vs)
Hannah plays badminton. (Vs)
They dance well. (Vo)
CONTEXTUAL EXPRESSIONS:
1) HABITUAL/ Repetitive Action (ex. Always, often, sometimes, rarely,
once, twice)
Examples:
I usually wake up early.
We take a bath four times a week.
2)NARRATIVE/ Reportorial Past
Examples:
She wins the award in the last contest.
John scores a point in the last game.
3) CURRENT Frame of Mind
Examples:
I feel like flying.
I feel like an elephant.

4) ACCEPTED Observations

Examples:
Cheetah is the fastest land animal.
Fruits and vegetables contain a lot of vitamins.
5) IMMEDIACY as signaled by adverbs (ex. today, right now, at this time)
Examples:
Right now, He is busy and can't meet you.
At this time, I go out.
6) IMPERATIVES & Speaking Lines (commands, requests, direct quotes)
Examples:
Take this chair to the room.
Please go down the stairs Jim.
7) EXPECTED course of Action
Examples:
When they come, we will begin.
The teacher instructs her to prepare five minutes before the time.

PRESENT PROGRESSIVE TENSE

- Action is still in progress in my speaking moment.


Pattern: Am/ is/ Are + Verb+ -ing
Examples:
He/She is jumping over the fence.
Hannah is playing badminton.
They are dancing in the room.
When to use Present Progressive tense?
-To talk about something happening now.
Ex.
I am reading a book.
We are having a party.
-Refer to things happening around now.
Ex.
I'm working on my project.
Susan is teaching in the university.
-Talk about things that will happen in the near future.
Ex.
I'm baking cookies this afternoon.
He is joining us for church tonight.
Negative pattern for present progressive:
Form: Subject + auxiliary verb + not+ main verb-ing + object
Adding of not after is, are and am.
Positive: I am watching tv.
Negative: I am not watching tv.

PRESENT PERFECT TENSE

The action was done before my speaking moment and it is perfected


in my speaking moment
Has/have + Ven (Past participle)
Ex.
- My cousin has played football for three hours.
-He has written a letter to Maria.

PRESENT PERFECT PROGRESSIVE


- The action is being done before my speaking moment and it is still
being done until my speaking moment.
- has or have + been + Ving (present participle)
Ex:
My cousin has been playing football since this morning.
Duration From The Past Until Now
Ex:
They have been talking for the last hour.
She has been working in that company for three years.
Recently, Lately
Ex:
Recently, I have been feeling really tired.
She has been watching television lately.
SIMPLE PAST

- Action done before speaking moment and completed in definite time before
speaking moment.
-Easiest form because the verb doesn't depend on the subject.
Pattern: subject + past form of verb (Ved Vd)
Ex:
I danced gracefully yesterday.(Vd)
My mom cooked hotdog a while ago.(Ved)
She played well. (Ved)
Contextual Expressions
1. Past associations
-The events are relegated (to put in less important) to the experiences of
the speaker. The speaker no longer considers the events as part of his "now".
Ex:
The man molded the clay into a human figure and gave it to the
children.
2. Definite time/year/part of the day in the past
Ex:
At 1:00 p.m., she cleared a way for the car.
That day, a man shouted in front of the house.
3. Daily or frequent or repetitive occurrence
Ex:
Every hour, he tried to balance the ball.
Day after day, she stood at the flagpole.
4. With "later, after", and adverbs expressing passage of time
Ex:
Later, she went into a mall to be happy.
After the game, all the players were tired.
5. Span of time

Ex:
For one day, he went without a food.
For three hours, he stood steadily on the platform.

6. Remote immediacy
Ex:
I just loved the sound you made.
Now, everyone wanted to be happy.

Definition:
Indicates that an action was completed (finished or perfected) at some
point in the past before something else happened.
Had + past participle
It is used to make clear that one event happened before another in the
past
It does not matter which event is mentioned first the tense makes it
clear which one happened first

Past Perfect + just


just is used with the past perfect to refer to an event that was only a
short time earlier than before now.
