SIGNIFICANCE OF ISLAMIC CALENDER IN ISLAM

Monthly calendars play a very important role in scheduling of time and significant events in lives
of their particular followers. There are many types of almanacs made from people of many
different religions and regions for sake of knowing about particular traditions, holidays and
occasions etc. like Gregorian (Christian), and Hijri (Islamic) calendars. All are based on the
shifting of the Moon and contains about 30 days in every month because of the Moons shape
and movements. Islam also shares the similar concept of timetable as the ALLAH Almighty says
in the Holy Quran, verse 10:5:
It is He who made the sun a shining light and the moon a derived light and determined for
it phases that you may know the number of years and account [of time]. ALLAH has not
created this except in truth. He details the signs for a people who know.
In this verse (ayah), ALLAH Almighty has not only told us about the reality that Moons light is
not its own, but in fact resulting from the Sun, but also has made us conscious of importance of
both in determining time and years. All of the information that was revealed about 1400 years
ago has been proved accurate through science nowadays.
Now coming to the Islamic Calendar, unlike charts of many other religions, it has been made
only by ALLAH Almighty.
Verse 9:36 of Holy Quran;

Indeed, the number of months with ALLAH is twelve [lunar] months in the register of
ALLAH [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred.
That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them. And fight against the
disbelievers collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know that ALLAH is
with the righteous (who fear Him).
It means that ever since the beginning of time on world and the arrival of
Hazrat Adam (A.S), the cycle or rotation of time period which Muslims follow at present, had
always been in result. The Islamic calendar that is based entirely on lunar cycles, was initially
introduced in 638 CE by Umar bin al Khattab, who was a close Companion of our beloved
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the second Caliph of Islam.
Therefore, nearly all the Islamic months have some type of specialty and importance engraved in
them. Islam does not have any space for superstitious beliefs. Muslims must not believe in any
inauspicious weeks, days, years, months, there are no things, people, houses or that bring bad
luck. During the Pre Islamic unawareness, the Arabs had a numerous superstitions about
different months. The Messenger of ALLAH Almighty, Prophet (PBUH) demolished all false
and superstitious viewpoint of pre-Islamic times, bringing Islam.
Muslims should avoid all kind of superstitious beliefs concerning those months. They must
understand that bad luck will only overtake those who disobey ALLAH Almighty and Prophet
(PBUH). Any Muslim who does not obey the orders of ALLAH Almighty, who does not perform
the five daily namaz, does not concern for observing roza, does not pay Zakaat , avoid to go for
Hajj , and does not live life according to the Islamic values is the most unfortunate Muslim.
