HOISTING SYSTEM

DRILLING TECHNOLOGY
CHAPTER III. CIRCULATING SYSTEM
Drilling fluid (mud) functions:

Clean the hole

Cools and lubricate the bit
Protect the walls of the wellbore
Controls formation pressure
Lifts cuttings to the surface that carries downhole information

Mud conditioning equipment:

Shale shaker
Degasser
Hydroclyclone system
o Desander (40 microns)
o Desilter (20 microns)
o Mud Cleaner (7 microns)
o Centrifuge (2-5 microns)

CHAPTER IV. WELL CONTROL SYSTEM

Kick happens when formation (reservoir) pressure is higher than hydrostatic
(wellbore) pressure.
Blowout happens when kick fluids reaches the rig floor

BOP stack types:

Surface BOP
Subsea BOP (for floating rigs)

Basic BOP types:

Annular preventer main preventer, first one to be closed

Ram preventers:

Pipe ram pipe is present

Blind ram no pipe is present
Shear ram if cutting of pipe is necessary
VBR ram adjustable to any pipe sizes

Other well control equipments:

BOP control panel

Choke line
Choke manifold
Choke manifold control panel
Mud-gas separator
Flare line
Flare pit

Operation
When preventers are closed, kick fluids will pass through choke line then to choke
manifold. Then it will go to mud-gas separator to separate kick fluids from drilling
mud. Gas will go to flare line and will be burn in the flare pit. Separated drilling mud
will be reconditioned so it can be used again for circulation.

CHAPTER V. ROTARY SYSTEM

Kelly system

Top drive system

Top drive advantages

Reduces drilling time
Rotates drill string efficiently
Handles pipe efficiently

Variable rotating power

Allows rotation at any time
Rapid response to well kicks
Reaming and back reaming
Reduces number of connection required
Crew does not need to lay down pipe between wells

Top drive disadvantages

More expensive to maintain
Very large
Drilling line wears faster
More difficult to move on land rigs must be disassembled

Mud motor

Powered by drilling mud

Used in directional drilling
Only the drill bit rotates not the whole drill string

CHAPTER VI. WELL MONITORING

Drilling operations must be constantly monitored to avoid major drilling problems

GOAL
Give early indications of reservoir potential and warned for formation problems

Sample Parameters:

ROP (RATE OF PENETRATION)

GAS CONTENT OF MUD

WOB (WEIGHT ON BIT)

PUMP RATE PUMP PRESSURE

MUD PIT-LEVEL
