Design Value
V = 2 f b d
0.095b d
ACI 11.2.1.1
0.5V = f b d
0.048b d
ACI 11.4.6.1
Maximum
V + V = 10 f b d
0.48b d
ACI 11.4.7.9
0.104b d
ACI 8.13.8
By substituting d/n for s (where n= 2, 3, 4), the above equation can be written as:
V = A f n
Thus, for No 3 U-stirrups @ s= d/2 with fy = 60000 psi and = 0.75
Vs = 0.75(0.22)602 = 19.8 kips, say 20 kips
The values Vs given in Table 02 may be used to select shear reinforcement with Grade
60 rebars.
Table 02: Values of Vs (fy= 60 ksi).

*Valid for stirrups with 2 legs (double the tabulated values for 4 legs, etc).
It should be noted that the values of Vs are not dependent on the member size nor on the
concrete strength.
In the above equation b and d are in inches and the resulting shear in kips.
Design example:
Simplified design of a beam (Shear design)
Solution: The example illustrates the simple procedure for selecting stirrups design
values for Vc and Vs.
(1) Design data: fc = 4,000 psi, fy = 60,000 psi, Wu = 7 kips/ft.
(2) Beam dimensions: bw = 12 in, d = 24 in.
(3) Calculations:
Vu @ column centerline:
Vu @ face of support:
(Vc+Vs)max:
Vc:
Vc/2:
@ d/3 = 8 in.:
use 5 @ 12 in.
A more practical solution may be to eliminate the 2 @ 8 in. and use 9 @ 6 in. and 5 @ 12
in.
