I chose to do two cartoons instead of just one because I felt they were both related to the stuff we
have been learning about, especially since one of them is for female inequality and one is for male
inequality. For the first I think it is relevant because it is saying that no one will be discriminated against
for their race and gender, but that is because everyone else that wasnt of that race and gender was already
discriminated against when getting the job. This cartoon shows describes how some of the job
opportunities can be judging their applicants and I felt like this applies very much to what we have been
learning because some of the things we read about was how some people wouldnt get hired because they
were female or they wouldnt get treated the same because they were black males and not white males.
That part I think ties in perfectly with the passage that we read from Maya Angelou. If you were to look at
this from a white males point of view I think it would look different. I think that you would just think that
they happened to hire some really great people who were all your same race and gender, I dont really
think they would have realized what they were doing because of the caption. I think the second cartoon
with the female is also very relatable to this topic in class because it is showing that even though she is
getting the same opportunity to be interviewed she really isnt because she is having to sit on the ground,
showing that she is less than the man who is in charge. I also like how the caption says that she isnt
getting discriminated against even though she clearly is because she is on the floor and he is in his chair
behind a desk looking down on her. If you were to look at this from his point of view I think it would look
like him just conveniently not having another chair for her and him just thinking he was better because he
was the boss and he could do whatever he wanted in regards to her fate with him.

Cartoon 1:
1. Creators Name: Loren Fisherman
2. Creations Title: Inequality Cartoon 6 of 161
3. What do you think is the main point or message of this work? I think the main point is trying to
tell us that too many places definitely discriminate based on age, sex, and race, which is why all
of the employees are young white males.
4. Why do you think so? I think this cartoon is trying to tell us that those are the most successful
people and they are better than others because they look like that. Society has created an image in
our minds of what successful people look like and so they are the ones who might be more likely
to get hired.
5. What evidence/support/technique does the artist bring to bear to help bolster his/her message? I
think the fact that this is in color so you can clearly tell that all these people are the same race
supports their idea. I also think that their use of lack of variation shows that they are all the same.
They are all wearing the same color suit and all look the same; one of the only differences is the
colors of the ties and hair change from person to person.
6. How might what was happening at the time the artist lived have impacted this message? This
might have been when people were still realizing that white males were getting more jobs/jobs
easier than blacks and females so they created this to help bring awareness. It might have
impacted the message also because it was so near to home for so many people.
7. What assumptions does the artist make about you? How do those assumptions affect the work?
The artist is assuming that I have noticed this trend and want to change it or think that it is wrong.
They are trying to pull me in because I might have not been offered a job because of my race or
gender.
8. Imagine how someone different from yourself might react to this work. Explain why their
reaction might be so. Someone who still thought that white males were superior might think that
that would be a good place to work because it would have the most successful people in it. They
would agree that it is a good place to work and they wouldnt understand the irony behind the
cartoon.
Cartoon 2:
1. Creators Name: Mike Flanagan
2. Creations Title: Inequality Cartoon 1 of 5
3. What do you think is the main point or message of this work? I think this one is to say that they
believe that men are better than women.
4. Why do you think so? I think this because she is sitting on the ground while he is up in his chair
looking down on her. He is even saying that she isnt being judged because she is female while
we can clearly see that she is.

5. What evidence/support/technique does the artist bring to bear to help bolster his/her message?
The artist shows him in a nice suit behind a big desk in his chair while she is sitting on the floor
with her hair kind of flying behind her in a plain black dress. His tone that he is using is also a
little demeaning because it feels like he is saying she is dumb for asking such a silly question that
is true that he refuses to acknowledge is true.
6. How might what was happening at the time the artist lived have impacted this message? It might
be when feminism was becoming a huge thing and they wanted to show why it was so important.
It also might have been when people were realizing that women were not in very many high up
positions while men were.
7. What assumptions does the artist make about you? How do those assumptions affect the work?
The artist is assuming that I feel the same way as the woman is feeling. I think this will affect the
work because it will make you have more empathy for the woman because we can all remember a
time when if felt like the world was judging us just for being women.
8. Imagine how someone different from yourself might react to this work. Explain why their
reaction might be so. Someone who though women were less than men might think that this is an
appropriate cartoon. They might agree with the feeling that women are inferior to men so they
will like the suggesting that they are.
