BACK TO THE PRINCIPLES TO RISE

AS A GLOBAL CITIZEN
The world is filled with a very complex problem. Racism, terrorism,
corruption, indifference towards fellow human beings, and the list goes on.
Solution is something very precious but sustainable solutions is the most valuable
solution. Most people sometimes shackled by his own ego and did not know that
they can be part of a sustainable solution, therefore we must expand the horizons
and continue to learn to be part of a community that thinks globally and holds
local wisdom with pride.
Global citizenship means seeing yourself as part of a collective. It means
taking responsibility for global issues. A global citizen is someone who identifies
with being part of an emerging world community and whose actions contribute to
building this community's values and practices. This person places their identity
of being part of a global community above that of their identity as a citizen of a
particular nation or place. A global citizen understands that their actions have an
impact here and around the world. A global citizen acts to build a sustainable
world. (Ibalytsky 2015)
One of the ways to be a global citizen is to be a social entrepreneur. Social
entrepreneurs are individuals with innovative solutions to societys most pressing
social problems. They are ambitious and persistent, tackling major social issues
and offering new ideas for wide-scale change. Rather than leaving societal needs
to the government or business sectors, social entrepreneurs find what is not
working and solve the problem by changing the system, spreading the solution,
and persuading entire societies to move in different directions. Just as
entrepreneurs change the face of business, social entrepreneurs act as the change
agents for society, seizing opportunities others miss to improve systems, invent
new approaches, and create solutions to change society for the better. While a
business entrepreneur might create entirely new industries, a social entrepreneur

develops innovative solutions to social problems and then implements them on a

large scale. (anonymous 2016)
Locally rooted, Globaly respected is the motto of Gadjah Mada University.
To be tall, a tree must have a strong root. To become a university that has huge
implications for the world, Gadjah Mada University must improve Indonesias
independency and sovereignty by providing sustainable solutions to various
problems both for Indonesia and the world. Gadjah mada University is considered
to be the best university in Indonesia with its identity as peoples university and
university of Pancasila. Gadjah Mada University has a major role in increasing
peoples quality of life in the field of technology, health, socioeconomics, and
agriculture. In addition, Gadjah Mada University has a role to realize the values of
Pancasila. Pancasila is not meant to be a decoration, but it is to be realized and
implemented as a daily basis. (Prayogi 2016)
As an Indonesian citizen we have to look up to Pancasila. Pancasila is
fundamental for us to be a global citizen. MPR Decree no. II / MPR / 1978 on
Ekaprasetia Pancakarsa outlines five principles of Pancasila to 36 points of
practice as a practical guide for the implementation of Pancasila. As for the
second principle the points are: Acknowledging equality, equal rights and equal
obligations between fellow human beings ; Mutual love our fellow humans ;
Develop an attitude of tolerance; Not arbitrarily against others ; Upholding the
values of humanity ; Carry out humanitarian activities ; Brave to stand for truth
and justice ; Indonesian nation feels itself as part of the whole human race, so
attitude of mutual respect and cooperation with other nations is developed.
(Alwanhayat 2015) These points should be every Indonesian citizens principle to
be a global citizen because the idea of global citizenship does not contrast with
Pancasila.
