Epoxy Asphalt
Overview

Overview

First developed in 1950s.

Tough thermoset polymer formed by combining

two components epoxy resin + curing agent
asphalt.

Gained popularity in 1967 when used to pave the

San Mateo Bridge, San Francisco.

Two manufactures in the world Chemco Systems

(US) & Jurong Ningwu (China).

Applications extended by Jurong Ningwu.

Key features

Key Features
Unrivaled strength

Excellent bond with substrate

Marshall stability of 40-80kN

5 8 times stronger that regular PMA

Advantage: Resists shoving / delamination

Benefit: Lower maintenance cost

Key Features
Durability

Service life well exceeding 30 - 40 years

Non reactive performance was hardly affected

even after 15 day immersion of acid, alkali, salt and
oil

Studies shown that NJ Epoxy Asphalt retained its

excellent crack resistance and bonding strength
even after 15 years

The aggregate on the surface will not sink and

smoothen over time retain porosity

Advantage: Resists rutting; less susceptible to

skidding

Benefit: Lower maintenance cost, lower accident

rates

Key Features
Fatigue resistant

Youngs modulus up to 80Mpa at ambient

temperature

Elongation at break up to 280%

10 30 times more fatigue resistant than common

grades of PMA.

Advantage: Resists cracking when subjected to

repeated loads over a period of time.

Benefit: Lower maintenance cost

Key Features
Performs even at extreme temperatures

No flow-ability at 300; Not brittle at

temperatures up to -40

Advantage: Resists shoving / cracking at extreme

temperatures

Benefit: Lower maintenance cost

Key Features
Fast curing

Road is ready for use as soon as the mat reaches

ambient temperatures - approx. 2 hours

Full curing requires 2-6 weeks

Advantage: less lane closures

Benefit: faster turnaround times

Key Features
Less materials required

Base course can be eliminated

Advantage: Reduced construction costs; smaller

carbon footprint

Benefit: lower costs; enhanced corporate image

Key Features
Environment friendly

Lower emissions

No VOC emissions

Smaller carbon footprint

Lower mixing temp.

PMA
Epoxy Asphalt

Less materials required

180C
149-177C
120C

Advantage: Smaller carbon footprint

Benefit: Enhances corporate image

Key Features
Easily mixed

Easily mixed and applied by local construction

crew

Using conventional batch plant equipment and

paving equipment with minimal lane closures.

Requires less energy can be mixed at cooler

temperatures.
- Common PMA:
170 - 180C
- NJ Epoxy Asphalt: 120 - 130C

Advantage: Drop-in solution

Benefit: Low switching costs

25mm (after compaction) leveling course
- Levels out the steel bolts on deck

Paving process
Orthotropic steel deck
0.07mm inorganic zinc coating
0.68mm hot epoxy bond coat
25mm (after compaction) leveling course
0.45mm hot epoxy bond coat

Orthotropic steel deck
0.07mm inorganic zinc coating
0.68mm hot epoxy bond coat
25mm (after compaction) leveling course
0.45mm hot epoxy bond coat
25mm (after compaction) wearing course
- Serves as a sacrificial layer

- Easily replaceable after it wears out

Compacting
Stages

Compacting stages
1. Breakdown stage

Use of vibratory steel wheeled roller for more effective compacting

2. Intermediate stage
3. Final stage

Compacting stages
1. Breakdown stage
2. Intermediate stage

Use of pneumatic tyred roller

3. Final stage

Compacting stages
1. Breakdown stage
2. Intermediate stage
3. Final stage

Use of non vibratory steel wheeled roller

Compacting stages
1. Breakdown stage
2. Intermediate stage
3. Final stage
Note: Each stage is only completed after 3 passes by the rollers

Setting
Temperatures

Setting temperatures
Breakdown stage compaction must be complete before asphalt mixture drops below 82C
Final stage compaction must be complete before asphalt mixture drops below 65C
Ready to use - when mat reaches ambient temperature
Full curing - requires 2 6 weeks
