Title:

Assessment Mangonbangon River

Site Location: Mangonbangon River, Tacloban City

Length: 5.5 km
Type: Hydrographic class stream
Elevation: 1 meter above sea level.
River Flow: Starts from Brgy. 110 (Utap) down to the citys sea wall.
Geographical Map: Showing the Mangonbangon River (MR) flow.

Source: Google Map (google.com.ph)

Types of Waste Generated in MR:

Organic or Biodegradable Waste - commonly found in municipal solid

waste (sometimes called biodegradable municipal waste, or BMW) as green

waste, food waste, paper waste, and biodegradable plastics. In the absence
of oxygen, much of this waste will decay to methane by anaerobic digestion.

Litter - consists of waste products that have been disposed improperly,

without consent, at an inappropriate location. To litter means to drop and
leave objects, often man-made, such as aluminum cans, cardboard boxes or
plastic bottles on the ground and leave them there indefinitely or for others
to dispose of as opposed to disposing of them properly.

Sewage - water-carried waste, in solution or suspension that is intended to

be removed from a community. Also known as domestic or
municipal wastewater, it is characterized by volume or rate of flow, physical
condition, chemical and toxic constituents, and its bacteriologic status (which
organisms it contains and in what quantities). It consists mostly of grey
water (from sinks, tubs, showers, dishwashers, and clothes washers), black
water (the water used to flush toilets, combined with the human waste that it
flushes away); soaps and detergents; and toilet paper.

Household Waste - commonly known as trash or garbage, is a waste

type consisting of everyday items that are discarded by the public.

Waste Contributors:
The contributors of waste found in Mangonbangon River are mostly the
households near the site and passersby who throws their litter into the river. The
uncollected waste per household due to alarming range of population per area is
one of the primary source of waste that is generated in the 5.5 km river. Lack of
environmental concern and knowledge on adverse effects of unhealthy rivers (such
as floods and waterborne diseases) and importance of water bodies to humans and
the environment are the problems which the local government unit should address
in order to save Mangonbangon River.

Allocation of Wastewater and Byproducts in

Hospitals and Industries

Activity Site:

EVRMC, MMH, COCA-COLA FEMSA, PEPSI

Findings:
I. Implications of Improper Wastewater Treatment
Wastewater is treated to remove pollutants (contaminants). Wastewater treatment is a process to
improve and purify the water, removing some or all of the contaminants, making it fit for reuse or
discharge back to the environment. Discharge may be to surface water, such as rivers or the ocean, or
to groundwater that lies beneath the land surface of the earth. Properly treating wastewater assures that
acceptable overall water quality is maintained.
Investigations in the water resources have shown that poor operation and maintenance of
wastewater and sewage treatment plants and facilities have a great impact on both the environment and
human health. Ignorance to properly maintain wastewater and sewage treatment infrastructure has led
to effluents with various types of pollutants being deposited into water resources.
II. Hospitals and Industries Explored
A. EASTERN VISAYAS REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER (EVRMC)

A.1 EVRMC Profile

Located in Real Street, Tacloban City, Leyte.
Level 3 (Teaching and training hospital)
Owned by Department of Health
Bed capacity is 275
A.2 Wastewater Status and Programs
The EVRMC wastewater treatment facility generates effluents which is discharged
quarterly with permit from the Environmental Management Bureau Region 8. The process starts
when the influent is put into the wet well wherein oil is separated and the pH is controlled. It
undergoes aeration where dissolved oxygen is tested and then goes to the settling tank where the
sludge is allowed to settle until it will be siphoned by a third party. The remaining water will now
be filtered using a plate and frame filter press and the effluent will be stored until the next
discharge date.

B. COCA-COLA FEMSA

C.1 Coca-Cola Profile

Located in Rotonda, Tacloban City
Owned by FEMSA
Produces and distributes Coca-Cola, Sprite and other trademark beverages of The CocaCola Company in Mexico.
C.2 Wastewater Status and Programs

Created their own wastewater treatment standard through multi-stage and stakeholder
engagement process: first dentified what was in the wastewater by analyzing several
samples of untreated water from different manufacturing operations across their system;
Worked with experts from outside of their system to evaluate aquatic toxicology science
to determine how varying concentrations of certain water quality parameters (acidity,
alkalinity, BOD, etc.) affect aquatic life; reviewed wastewater regulations to learn how
the government was addressing those parameters; and combined all the information to
arrive at the maximum allowable concentrations for each parameter. (Source:
thecocacolacompany.com)
Their internal wastewater treatment standards call for all water discharge to be treated to
those levels. All treated waters are then released in the Cancabato bay.
Adopted Burayan and Mahayahay Creek in the Adopt-Estero-Program of DENR that
called for a collaborative undertaking among communities along esteros.
Has a drinking water treatment emergency mobile plant which may be deployed during
times of disaster to provide communities with access to safe drinking water.

C. PEPSI COLA PRODUCTS PHIL. INC.

D.1 Pepsi Cola Plant Profile

Located in Brgy. Sto. Nino, Tanauan, Leyte
Owned by lead shareholder Lotte Chilsung
PCPPI manufactures and sells well-known brands such as Pepsi-Cola, Mountain Dew, 7Up, Mirinda, Mug, Gatorade, Tropicana, Lipton, Sting and Premier.
D.2 Wastewater Status and Programs

Actively involved in all activities of Water Quality Monitoring.

Employs a total sytems approach to treating and conserving water. These systems apply
a combination of technologies, inclusing membrane bioreactors, reverse osmosis, systems
to reduce water hardness and chlorine levels, UV disinfection, and sand & carbon to
purify water and remove residual color. (Source: pepsico.com)

D. MOTHER OF MERCY HOSPITAL (MMH)

B.1 MMH Profile

Located in B. Aquino Ave., Brgy. 50-B Youngfield, Tacloban City
Level 2

1. Identify which part of the engine represents the system the thermodynamics:
Piston- for intake
Cylinder- for compression
Spark plugs- for power or ignition
Valves- for exhaust
2. Schematic diagram:

3. The piston will not run if there is no inertia.

4. Types of machine/engine discussed:
Gasoline Engine Diesel Engine5. Type of oil used:
Synthetic Motor Oil
Synthetic Blend Motor Oil
High-Mileage Motor Oil
Conventional Motor Oil
6. Who will decide what type of oil to be used:
The owner of the engine/mechanic.
7. Difference on type of oil used
Synthetic Motor Oil
Synthetic motor oil has gone through a chemically engineered process.
Synthetic oil molecules are more uniform in shape with fewer

impurities and better properties than conventional oil molecules. In

general, synthetic oil has better extreme high temperature and low
temperature performance. Synthetic oils are generally formulated with
higher performing additives.

Synthetic Blend Motor Oil

Synthetic blend motor oil uses a mixture of synthetic and conventional
base oils for added resistance to oxidation (compared to conventional
oil) and provide excellent low-temperature properties.

High-Mileage Motor Oil

High-mileage motor oil is specially formulated for late model vehicles
or newer vehicles with over 75,000 miles. High mileage motor oil, with
its unique additives and formulation, helps to reduce oil burn-off, and
helps prevent oil leaks that may occur in older engines.

Conventional Motor Oil

Conventional motor oils can be formulated in a range of viscosity
grades and quality levels. Conventional motor oil is recommended for
drivers with simple engine designs and regular (as opposed to severe)
driving styles.

8. Flow of byproducts:

9. For automatic cars which part that control:
