THE ORDER OF WORSHIP

The Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost

PRELUDE

Lectionary 18

CONFESSION OF SINS AND PROCLAMATION OF FORGIVENESS

Holy Communion (ELW 3)

INTRODUCTION
Todays texts offer instruction and encouragement for all who are
occasionally overwhelmed by the unhappy business of life. Jesus urges
us to take care and be on guard against all kinds of greed. We who have
died with Christ in holy baptism have also been raised with him and are
encouraged to elevate our thinking, seeking the things that are above. To
that end we seek the sustenance of the Lords supper and the
encouragement of Gods word.
CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags
and a cry room are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed.
An usher will gladly provide you with assistance.
As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate
all cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service.
We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion
registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so
that we may record your presence with us.
PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW
God of abundance, you have poured out a large measure of earthly
blessings: our table is richly furnished, our cup overflows, and we live in
safety and security. Teach us to set our hearts on you and not material
blessings. Keep us from becoming captivated by prosperity, and grant us in
wisdom to use your blessings to your glory and to service of humankind;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gather Us In

Jeffrey Honore

In the name of the Father, and of the (+) Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Let us pray.
Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from
whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the
inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily
magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Let us confess our sins.
Silence for reflection and self-examination.
Gracious God,
We confess that we have turned in toward ourselves and have turned
away from you and from our neighbors. We are truly sorry and
humbly repent. In your compassion forgive us our sins, known and
unknown, things we have done and things we have failed to do. Turn us
again to you and uphold us by your Spirit, so that we may live and
serve you in newness of life through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.
God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and
made us alive together with Christ. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins
are forgiven. By grace you have been saved. Almighty God give you faith
through the Holy Spirit that Christ may live in your hearts and that his love
may show forth in your lives. Amen.

CANTICLE OF PRAISE

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray. Benevolent God, you are the source, the guide, and the goal of
our lives. Teach us to love what is worth loving, to reject what is offensive
to you, and to treasure what is precious in your sight, through Jesus Christ,
our Savior and Lord. Amen.
Please be seated.
A MESSAGE FOR OUR CHILDREN
FIRST READING Hosea 11:1-11
1

When Israel was a child, I loved him,

and out of Egypt I called my son.
2
The more I called them,
the more they went from me;
they kept sacrificing to the Baals,
and offering incense to idols.
3

Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk,

I took them up in my arms;
but they did not know that I healed them.
4
I led them with cords of human kindness,
with bands of love.
I was to them like those
who lift infants to their cheeks.
I bent down to them and fed them.
5

They shall return to the land of Egypt,

and Assyria shall be their king,
because they have refused to return to me.
6
The sword rages in their cities,
it consumes their oracle-priests,
and devours because of their schemes.
7
My people are bent on turning away from me.
To the Most High they call,
but he does not raise them up at all.
8

How can I give you up, Ephraim?

How can I hand you over, O Israel?
How can I make you like Admah?
How can I treat you like Zeboiim?

My heart recoils within me;

my compassion grows warm and tender.
9
I will not execute my fierce anger;
I will not again destroy Ephraim;
for I am God and no mortal,
the Holy One in your midst,
and I will not come in wrath.

You led them | on a straight path

to go to a city where | they might dwell.
8
Let them give thanks to you, LORD, for your | steadfast love
and your wonderful works | for all people.
9
For you satisfy the | thirsty soul
and fill the hungry | with good things.
43
Whoever is wise will pon- | der these things,
and consider well the LORDs | steadfast love. R

10

They shall go after the LORD,

who roars like a lion;
when he roars,
his children shall come trembling from the west.
11
They shall come trembling like birds from Egypt,
and like doves from the land of Assyria;
and I will return them to their homes, says the LORD.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

SECOND READING: Colossians 3:1-11

1

So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are
above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on
things that are above, not on things that are on earth, 3for you have died,
and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4When Christ who is your life is
revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory.
5Put to death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly: fornication, impurity,
passion, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry). 6On account of these the
wrath of God is coming on those who are disobedient. 7These are the ways
you also once followed, when you were living that life. 8But now you must
get rid of all such thingsanger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive
language from your mouth. 9Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have
stripped off the old self with its practices 10and have clothed yourselves
with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the
image of its creator. 11In that renewal there is no longer Greek and Jew,
circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but
Christ is all and in all!
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Give thanks to the LORD, for the | LORD is good,

for Gods mercy en- | dures forever.
2
Let the redeemed of the | LORD proclaim
that God redeemed them from the hand | of the foe,
3
gathering them in | from the lands;
from the east and from the west, from the north and | from the
south.
4
Some wandered in | desert wastes;
they found no path to a city where | they might dwell.
5
They were hun- | gry and thirsty;
their spirits lan- | guished within them.
6
Then in their trouble they cried | to the LORD,
and you delivered them from | their distress. R

Please rise for the reading of the gospel.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

GOSPEL: Luke 12:13-21

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

The holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Luke.

Glory to you, O Lord.

Rooted in Christ and rising to serve, let us pray for the church, the world,
and all in need.
Please sit or kneel as you are able.

13

Someone in the crowd said to [Jesus,] Teacher, tell my brother to divide

the family inheritance with me. 14But he said to him, Friend, who set me
to be a judge or arbitrator over you? 15And he said to them, Take care! Be
on your guard against all kinds of greed; for ones life does not consist in
the abundance of possessions. 16Then he told them a parable: The land of
a rich man produced abundantly. 17And he thought to himself, What should
I do, for I have no place to store my crops? 18Then he said, I will do this: I
will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my
grain and my goods. 19And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample
goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry. 20But God said to
him, You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And
the things you have prepared, whose will they be? 21So it is with those who
store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God.
The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.
Please be seated.
SERMON Pastor Charles Peterson
Please stand to sing the hymn.

Each petition ends with:

Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.
Pastor may offer other prayers.
We lift our prayers to you, O God, trusting your promise to hear us; through
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
RITE OF ANOINTING FOR HEALING
Brothers and sisters, James writes: Is any one of you sick? Let him call the
elders of the church to prayer over him and anoint him with oil in the name
of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well;
the Lord will raise him up.
I invite you to come forward for anointing and prayer in the name of the
Lord.
Worshippers may come forward.
The minister will anoint each with the sign of the cross, praying:

HYMN OF THE DAY: My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less (ELW 597)

CREED
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, Gods only Son, our Lord, who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at
the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and
the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life
everlasting.

Almighty God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit uphold you, fill you with grace,
and heal your every ill.
Amen.
When all have returned to their seats, the congregation stands
to share the peace of the risen Christ.
PEACE
The peace of Christ be with you always.
And also with you.

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK

Dominic, founder of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), died 1221
Monday, August 08, 2016
Dominic was a Spanish priest who saw the wealth of the clergy as a
stumbling block for the church, so he formed a movement, the Order of
Preachers (commonly called Dominicans) devoted to itinerant preaching
and living in poverty.
