AHMEDABAD: Government and Central Public

Sector Undertakings (CPSUs) pay more salary for
entry-level jobs compared
to private companies, but
the salary in private companies increases with experience, shows a study conducted by IIM-Ahmedabad
for the 7th Pay Commission.
The study was commissioned by the 7th Central
Pay Commission and IIM-A
was asked to undertake it,
so that the commission can
revise pay in such a way that
government jobs attract talent.
The study provides
comparison of salaries in the
government sector, CPSUs
and private sectors at the
entry, 3rd, 5th, 10th, 15th,
20th and 25th years of experience. It was submitted to
the 7th Pay Commission in
October last year. It shows
that across a majority of job
roles, government or CPSUs
pay more than private companies at entry-level. For
many jobs, the salary difference narrows and become
more comparable and even
exceeds for private jobs as

MUMBAI: Stocks ruled

higher for the sixth session
as the Sensex added nearly
134 points to end at 27,279 - a fresh over 8-month high
-- as monsoon picked up
and the global recovery
post-Brexit spread cheer.
Rainfall deficit shrank to
6 per cent, sharply down
from 18 per cent in the first
week of June, after substantial rains over the weekend.
Mood was also decidedly
upbeat after it emerged that
central bankers across the
globe are stepping up
stimulus measures to offset
concerns from the shock
Brexit referendum, which
sent global stocks higher.
Market remained in the
green territory throughout.
The 30-share Sensex
ended higher by 133.85
points, or 0.49 per cent, at
27,278.76 -- its highest closing since October 26 last
year. As many as 19 stocks
gained. It had added 747.20
points in the past five sessions. The NSE Nifty ended
up 42.35 points, or 0.51 per

NEW DELHI: Continuing its

upward journey, gold prices
rose by another Rs 260 to Rs

global trend At the Multi
Commodity Exchange, gold
for delivery in far-month October was trading higher by
Rs 260 or 0.82 per cent to
trade at Rs 32,040 per 10 gram
in a business turnover 102
lots. In a similar fashion, the
yellow metal for delivery in
August shot up by Rs 249
to Rs 31,712 per 10 gm in 922
lots. Analysts attributed persistent rise in gold prices at
futures trade to a firming
trend overseas where gold
surged for a fourth day as
investors sought precious
metals as safe-haven assets.
Meanwhile, gold climbed 1.2
per cent to USD 1,357.63 an

highest level in over two
years. (PTI)

have gained experience. For
specialised doctors, however, CPSUs pay more at
entry level, but the salary of
doctors in private hospitals
increases significantly after
three years and continues to
do so, depending on their
specialisation.
Government pays more to
entry-level scientists till midcareer level compared to private sector, because private
sectors value "untested scientists" less but pay more as
here "compensation is driven
by the ability to provide results and this characteristic
rises with number of years

which continue to pay them
less even after years of experience.
"Retention is not a major
concern for this job role in

The study looks at the salary patters of nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, dietitians, lab technicians,

Salary of entry-level

Rupee firms up 5

high of 67.27
MUMBAI: Extending gains
for the fourth straight session, the rupee on Monday
firmed up by another 5 paise
to close at a two-week high
of 67.27 on sustained selling of dollars by banks and
exporters on the back of
higher domestic equities.
Weakness of dollar in the

Exporters and banks preferred to reduce their dollar
position on hopes of foreign
capital inflows into domestic equity markets. The rupee opened higher at 67.23
as against the last Friday's
closing level of 67.32 per
dollar at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market and hovered in a range
of 67.1475 and 67.29 before

their case, government and
PSUs pay more than private

FM expects
better growth
outlook for
sweet spot
India
RAIPUR: Calling India a
"sweet spot" in the subdued global economy, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley
today said indication of
"good rains" will further
boost the country's growth
momentum.
"This time, it looks like
rains are going to be good
and India can grow very
well. There are signs (for
that)," he said addressing
the first national minerals &
mining conclave here.
India clocked 7.6 per cent
growth rate in 2015-16 when
there was a global
slowdown, and deficient
rainfall for two years in a
row, he said.
Jaitley said India is a
"sweet spot" in the global
economy and "growth outlook looks much better with
indications of good rains
this year".
The Finance Minister
added that at a time when
the global economy is slow,
India is an example with its
higher growth rate.
"When the going is
good everybody grows.
But, at such a time (global
downturn) becoming the
fastest growing economy is
an example in itself. It shows
that we are ready and capable to deal with such
changes and perform," he
noted. On the impact of Britain exiting the European Union, the finance minister
said, "We were the least impacted. People feared that
currency and stock markets
will crash, but we saw the
impact for just one day."
This indicates the robustness of the Indian economy
and displays its capacity to
handle changes, Jaitley
said.
On the minerals and mining sector in the country, the
Minister said that government's initiatives in the sector are showing results and
the industry is slowly coming out of the rut.
"This is the beginning
and then too it is showing
growth. Global growth is
weak and when the global
growth comes back to good
levels then this experiment
will also grow further," he
added. (PTI)

Antonio extends contract with West

Ham to 2020

UNDATED: Midfielder Michail Antonio has extended

his contract with West Ham United until 2020, the Premier League club said today. After joining from Championship side Nottingham Forest in September, the 26year-old scored eight league goals in 26 appearances.
"I am delighted to have signed a new contract. I have
always believed in my own ability and when I am given
the opportunity I will take it and hopefully I have showed
that," Antonio told the club's website
(www.whufc.com). West Ham, who secured a Europa
League spot for the second successive year after finishing seventh, open their 2016-17 campaign against
Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Aug. 13. (Reuters)

Bulls beat Puneri Paltan in

Pro Kabaddi League

HYDERABAD: Bengaluru Bulls recorded a 29-27 win

over Puneri Paltan in a closely contested match of Pro
Kabaddi Season 4 here on Monday. Mohit Chhillar was
great in defence as he scored six points while Rohit
Kumar turned the game in the last minute with a super
raid and ended up with eight points. Bengaluru Bulls
gained a spot in the league table and jumped to fifth
position with 13 points from four games. Puneri Paltan
suffered their second defeat of the season but remain
top of the table with 20 points from six games. Deepak
Niwas Hooda scored a super raid in the third minute as
Puneri Paltan led 3-1 and reduced Bengaluru Bulls to
four men. Ajay Rathi scored two points in the sixth
minute for the Bulls to tie the game at 3-3. Puneri Paltan
raiders were kept quiet by the Bulls defence as they
could register only one successful raid in the first 10
minutes. (PTI)

SanTina in quarterfinals; Bopanna-Mergea knocked out

LONDON: Roger Federer
felled high-flying Steve
Johnson at Wimbledon on
Monday, knocking the wind
out of the powerhouse with
a 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 win in the
fourth round.
Despite considerable
pre-match hype about Johnson, fresh from victory at the
Nottingham
grasscourt
event, there was to be no
Independence Day party for
the burly American, as Federer showed more than
enough to suggest he remains on track for a record
eighth Wimbledon men's
singles crown.
While Andy Murraysupporting Brits have been
rubbing their hands with
glee over Novak Djokovic's
shock third-round defeat,
the biggest beneficiary of
the Serb's removal may yet
prove to be third seed Federer, who on Monday drew
level with Martina Navratilova on a record 306 Grand
Slam singles match wins.
In the quarter-finals, Federer will play Croatian ninth
seed Marin Cilic who advanced after his opponent,
Japanese fifth seed Kei
Nishikori, retired injured
while trailing 6-1, 5-1.
Meanwhile, Defending

champions Sania Mirza and

Martina Hingis demolished
the challenge of Christina
Mchale and Jelena Ostapenko to move into the quarterfinals but Rohan Bopanna lost a marathon third
round with partner Florin
Mergea to bow out of the
Wimbledon Championships here on Monday.
The top seeded IndoSwiss pair of Sania and
Martina overpowered the
American-Latvia combination 6-1 6-0 in the third round
contest that lasted just 46
minutes.
Dishing out a dominating
performance, Sania and
Martina broke their rivals
five times and saved two
chances they faced in the
match.
Meanwhile, sixth seeds
Bopanna and Mergea lost a
fiercely fought men's doubles third round 6-2 3-6 4-6
7-6(8-6) 6-8 to 10th seeds
Henri Kontinen and John
Peers in two hours and 55
minutes.

GENEVA: The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said

Monday it will decide whether to overturn the ban
against Russia's athletics programme by July 21, two
weeks before the start of the Rio Games. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF)
banned Russia's entire track and field federation following revelations of massive, state-sponsored doping. The suspension first announced in November was
maintained last month, which appeared to all but crush
Russia's hopes of sending athletes to the Games in Rio
de Janeiro, which open on August 5. (AFP)

team will now travel to Tinsukia for the semi-finals.

Luckless Nishikori
faces injury deja vu
LONDON: Bad luck seems
to follow Japan's Kei
Nishikori around at Wimbledon. For the second consecutive year injury, and not
an opponent, knocked the
fifth seed out of the world's
most famous tennis tournament. Last year the 2014 US
Open runner-up had to bow
out of the grasscourt championships before his second-round match against
Santiago Giraldo because of
a calf strain he picked up in
the Halle warm-up tournament.
It was a case of deja vu
on Monday as Nishikori,
facing Croatia's Marin Cilic
for a place in the quarter-fi-

nals, was sidelined by a rib

injury which had also
forced him out of Halle.
"It's the same injury I
had in Halle. It's been not
recovering well these two
weeks," said Nishikori,
who quit before his second-round match at the
German event.
"After the third round
here, it's got worse. I was
in too much pain on the
court. I couldn't really compete today." Nishikori's involvement in Monday's
match was kept to a minimum during the opening
exchanges with Cilic who
beat him to the Flushing
Meadows title. (Reuters)

CALGARY (CANADA): It
was double bonanza for India at the Canada Open as B
Sai Praneeth and Rio-bound
men's doubles pair of Manu
Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy
clinched twin crowns after
winning their respective title clash at the USD 55,000
Grand Prix badminton tournament here.
Praneeth dished out a
dominating game to defeat
Korea's Lee Hyun Il 21-12
21-10 in the men's singles
final that lasted less than half
an hour on Sunday at the
Markin MacPhail Centre.
Top seed Manu and
Sumeeth Reddy, who became the first Indian men's
doubles pair to qualify for
the Rio Olympics, received
a big boost when they defeated local combo of Adrian Liu and Toby Ng 21-8 2114 in a lop-sided final here.
Plagued by injuries and
indifferent form, Praneeth
has been making early exits
from tournaments for quite

a few years now. Of course,

he had occasional burst of
brilliance from time to time
like when he stunned 2003
All England Champion Muhammad Hafiz Hashim of
Malaysia at Thailand Open
Grand Prix Gold tournament
in June, 2013 or ruining the
farewell party of Indonesia's
Taufik Hidayat, a former
World and Olympic champion, in the first round of
Djarum Indonesia Open in
2013.
In fact, at the All England
Championships this year,
Praneeth had defeated twotime Olympic silver medallist Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia in the first round.
However, despite all these
sparks of excellence, a title
always eluded him.
But on Sunday, all that
changed as the Andhra
Pradesh lad stood at the
podium with his maiden
Grand Prix crown at his
hands.
World No. 37 Praneeth

hardly broke any sweat

against Lee, leading all
throughout right from the
start to end in both the
games. The third seeded
Korean couldn't put up any
fight against the Indian, who
jumped to a 10-2 lead in the
opening game and then kept
moving ahead to pocket the
game comfortably.
In the second game, Praneeth surged to a 8-0 lead
and then kept moving ahead
to slam the door on the Korean.
On Saturday, Lee had
defeated top seed Jayaram
of India 21-9 21-8 in the semifinals, while Praneeth had
eked out a difficult 22-20 1921 21-12 win over France's
Brice Leverdez.
World No. 23 Manu and
Sumeeth, who had beaten
Indonesia's Andrei Adistia
and Canada's Dong Adam
(Xingyu) 21-15 21-19 on Saturday, also didn't face much
challenge from Adrian and
Toby. (PTI)

Will never curb Virats aggression: Kumble

BENGALURU: He will be
the "last person to curb"
skipper Virat Kohli's on-field
aggression but newly appointed chief coach Anil
Kumble made it clear that as
"ambassadors of India" the
players should also be
aware that there exists a
"thin line" which needs to
be respected.
"I love his aggression. I
was also no different as I
was very aggressive. But we
were probably very different
in terms of how we came
across in the field. But you
don't want to curb aggression. I will be the last person to curb someone's natural instincts," Kumble said
at the pre-departure press

conference ahead of India's

tour of West Indies.
However, he also had a
note of caution for all the
aggressive players, including Kohli.
"But we all know how
important it is to be ambassadors of India and part of
the Indian cricket team. That
everybody understands.
We will ensure there is a thin
line and I hope everybody
knows that. I won't certainly
curb anyone's natural instincts," Kumble said with
Kohli by his side.
Asked about the expectations from the upcoming
four-Test series in the Caribbean, India's highest ever
wicket-taker said that the

idea would always be to try

for a victory as no team
thinks in any other fashion.
"As a coach, you want
the team to win and prepare
them to the best of their ability. To ensure that all areas
are covered. Skill-wise as
well as strategy wise so that
they are able to assess any
situation and find a solution
on their own. Good part is
that we are playing a lot of
Test cricket and we will be
able to assess the shortcomings if any and try to plug
that. We will be playing 17
Tests, starting with West
Indies and then New Zealand, England and Australia
at home.
"The goal is to remain

consistent and win as many

matches as you don't go
into a match thinking that
you cannot win it," the legendary leg-spinner said.
Kumble also assured that
off-spinner Ravichandran
Ashwin's injury on his right
arm was "not very serious"
although it is being monitored by the physio.
Meanwhile, skipper Virat
Kohli aptly stated that the
coming days will be an indicator as to how they have
shaped up as a Test unit.
"This is the perfect situation and opportunity to
challenge and assess ourselves as a Test team. These
months will define how we
play as a Test team in com-

ing years," Kohli said at the

pre-departure media conference ahead of Indian team's
tour of the West Indies.
Hailing Anil Kumble's
appointment as the team's
head coach, the Indian skipper said that now they have
a man, who can also tell them
how to win Test matches
abroad.
"It is a huge boost for us
that Anil bhai is our coach.
Bowlers will feel more support due to his presence.
Especially as he is someone
who has won so many
matches for the country and
knows what it requires to
win matches both India and
abroad," Kohli said praising
Kumble. (PTI)

Giggs lauds
Pogba
MANCHESTER: Manchester United legend Ryan
Giggs was full of praise for
French midfield sensation
Paul Pogba, who remains a
huge transfer target for
many top football clubs
across Europe.
The Juventus attacking
midfielder is the most highly coveted footballer in Europe at the moment, with
Manchester United looking
to seal his return, while
Spanish giants Real Madrid
and Barcelona are also interested in signing the 23year-old.
He left United for free in
2012 to join Juventus, where
he has blossomed into a
star. Bringing him back to
England would be an expensive exercise for United, but
new chief coach Jose Mourinho could be tempted to
spend around $130 million
for Pogba, who scored in
France's 5-2 quarter-final
win over Iceland at Euro
2016 on Sunday.
Giggs' departure from
United after 29 years of service was confirmed on Saturday, but he would be happy
to see Pogba return, stating
that the Frenchman has
"everything" to his game.
He's (Pogba) a talented
player. He can shoot with
both feet, pass the ball with
both feet and you don't realise how big he is, Giggs
was quoted as saying by
ITV on Sunday.
"Physically he's immense, he's strong, he's
quick, and he's got everything." United face an uphill battle to sign the Frenchman, with his agent Mino
Raiola previously commenting that Real Madrid were
leading in the race for Pogba's signature.
Pogba made 48 appearances in all competitions for
Juventus this past season,
helping the club clinch a
Serie A and Coppa Italia double. (IANS)

MADRID: Vicente del Bosque will not be continuing

as Spain's chief coach, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RSFF) announced on Monday. In a meeting
with RSFF president Angel Maria Villar, the veteran
coach "expressed his wishes to not to continue at the
front of the national team", said the statement. It added
that Villar considers del Bosque "an icon of Spanish
football" and offered him the chance to continue working in the RSFF and he "answered affirmatively". The
65-year-old coach did not want to announce his retirement after the team was eliminated from the UEFA Euro
2016 competition, and wanting to speak with Villar first.
The Real Madrid legend coached Spain to 2010 World
Cup and 2012 Euro titles in a glorious eight-year run.
Del Bosque has led the Spanish team through 114
matches, with 87 victories, ten draws, and 17 losses.

KARACHI: Pakistan Cricket Board

(PCB) chairman Shaharyar Khan has
suggested that the country should get
a higher percentage of profits from
games against arch-rivals India at International Cricket Council (ICC)
events.
Khan believes this is one of the
ways to raise funds after the terrorravaged country was stripped off hosting international cricket and there are
still no signs of the deadlock being
broken with the Board of Control for
Cricket in India (BCCI) in terms of bilateral series.

"Pakistan continues to play India

in ICC events. The interest and finances that these generate are unparalleled. Tickets for the World Cup
matches in Adelaide and Calcutta sold
out quicker than other major sporting
events - Wimbledon, the Olympics
being two examples," Khan said in a
paper to PCB's directors which was
accessed by espncricinfo.
"The financial income in ICC championships benefits enormously from
India-Pakistan clashes. Currently, all
members benefit from the windfall from
these matches. (The) Chairman pro-

posed that Pakistan should be given

a higher percentage of this income."
Khan presented the proposals at
the ICCs recent annual conference in
Edinburgh.
He also urged the ICC asking them
to compensate the board for having
to arrange home fixture in other countries.
They have had to play most of their
home matches in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) which has placed a huge
burden on the board. This in turn is
affecting the development of the game
in the nation, the paper stated. (IANS)
