Costa Clida Chronicle - July 2016

DEAR READERS

As most of you are probably aware,

our office on Camposol B had to close
due to the lease on the property rented
by Holmes & Pegg ending and no
satisfactory solution could be agreed
between them and Masa. We have
managed to relocate and hopefully we
will be in situ very shortly. Compusurf
have very kindly said that we can
distribute any extra August magazines
from their office on Camposol B;
otherwise the distribution will be the
same as normal.

Please bear with us while everything is

sorted out and if you have any queries
about where and when to pay money
if you usually come into the office to
see Martine, please call either 619 199
407 or 618 451 798. Any calls made
to our landline 968 970 680 will be
diverted to 646 005 017.
When everything is finalized we will
put the information on the blog www.
costacalidachronicle.blogspot.

and

website

We have been asked to mention to

dog owners the importance of cleaning
up after your dog when taking it for
a walk. During this hot weather it is
even more important to keep the smell
and flies down. If you are prepared
and take a plastic bag and scoop with
you whenever you take your dog for
a walk it is easy to pick up anything
left behind by your dog and place it in
a nearby bin. There are some lovely
walks around, but many of these are
spoilt by thoughtless dog owners. Flies
are automatically attracted to faeces
and they can then land on us or food,
potentially spreading various diseases.
Flies love the hot weather and food, so
dog owners Please Pick Up.
On that note, we wish you all a fabulous
August!

As is normal at this time of year a

few of the local businesses are taking

a well-earned break, so please dont
think that they have closed! They will
be open again in September. Bear in
mind that the coastal towns will all be
much busier during August as many
Spanish spend their holidays by the
sea, so your favourite bar or restaurant
may be a lot more crowded and noisier
than usual. The Spanish tend to eat
from 2pm for lunch and not before
10pm in the evening, so it might be
better to avoid those times if you want
to be served reasonably quickly.

for more action to resolve outstanding

cases and to increase the legal security for
future buyers.
Maura Hillen MBE, president of AUAN,
said I am very pleased and delighted to
accept this award, not only for myself, but
on behalf of every member of AUAN who
has also played no small part in defending
the rights of homeowners in Spain, most
especially committee members, past and
present, and those that came before me
as president of AUAN. This award is a
recognition and vindication of their efforts
and perseverance as much as it is of mine.
Mrs Hillen is also Councillor for Tourism &
International Relations in Albox, Almeria
and a Deputy Mayor.

The award to Mrs Maura Hillen, an Irish

national, reflects her work as President
and spokesperson of Abusos Urbanisticos
Almanzora No! (AUAN), which campaigns
for the legalisation of homes in the
Almanzora Valley, where thousands of
properties mostly British owned - have
lacked a final habitation certificate since
they were built some 10 to 15 years ago.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

Under Maura Hillens leadership, AUAN

which in English translates to No to Urban
Planning Abuse in Almanzora lobbies the
Spanish authorities at local, regional and
national level for the legalisation of homes,
to get them properly connected to water
and electricity, with mitigation of the costs
of doing so and information and support
for affected home owners. AUAN has
some 500 members, mostly British but
also Belgian and Irish nationals.
The British Ambassador to Spain, Simon
Manley, said Since 2008, Maura Hillen MBE
has made a tireless contribution towards
resolving the property problems that
affect thousands of British homeowners
in Spain. I am very pleased that Her
Majesty The Queen has approved this
honour, which recognises her dedication
and resilience. Under her leadership, AUAN
is a professionally-run, well-respected
organisation that has secured expert
legal advice and in turn proposed realistic
solutions to the Spanish regional and
national authorities. In March last year,
the Criminal Code was modified following
proposals from AUAN that judges take into
account that most owners purchased in
good faith, and that compensation should
be paid prior to any demolition. That was
a significant step forward in reforming
a legal system that AUAN argued had
failed adequately to recognise the rights
of homeowners or compensate for their
losses.
I know Maura intends to keep campaigning

What Should I Do In Case Of A Car

Accident?
Summer is now here in beautiful, sunny
Spain. With temperatures soaring its a
great feeling, although a tad hot at times
for all expats that live and work in this
tranquilo environment; tranquilo that
is until the influx of tourists from many
countries around the world, especially from
Britain and the rest of Europe.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

Now, more than other times during the

year, one needs to be even more careful
than ever on the roads. With all these extra
cars and drivers, who are perhaps more
used to driving on the left, an increase in
the risk of traffic accidents is inevitable.
1. Make sure your tyre pressures are
correct by checking them at least
once a month.

2. Check your cars radiator level is

topped up; the last thing you want
is for your car to overheat and have
to wait for a breakdown truck on the
edge of a busy motorway!
3. It is illegal to run out of screen wash,
so make sure this is topped up too.
4. Driving with flip-flops or shoes with
no back is not permitted.
5. All seat belts must be worn
and young children need safety
harnesses.

www.costacalidachronicle.com

would say it is a must see film.

All of us have gone through difficult and
challenging times in our lives, maybe
through illness, loss of a job, rejection, or
the loss of a loved one. Who do we turn to
in these circumstances in all our dilemmas?
Well I would of course say prayer, or reach
out to ask someone to pray for you.
Of course you too could purchase this War
Room DVD which tells you everything you
would want to know about prayer and how
to pray. We would be more than willing to
let you borrow our copy.

not just Christians, but anyone who has a

6. Using mobile phones are a definite

no no, including texting, which is
probably worse than speaking.
Should the unthinkable happen, here are
some tips that everyone, from a new driver
to an experienced one, should remember in
the case of an accident:
a. Stay calm and wear the reflective
vest
b. Get to a safe area near the accident
scene, turn on your emergency
flashers and use the two triangles
at the front and rear of your vehicle.
c. Make sure everyone is okay and call
112, if necessary.
d. When it is safe, take pictures of the
vehicles involved, damage, road
signs, etc.
e. Get
statements
and
contact
information from any witnesses.
f.

Complete the accident report: write

down the other drivers licence
number, insurance details, vehicle
information and phone number.
Remember it has to be signed by both
drivers and reported within seven
days; If you need road assistance,
call immediately Liberty Seguros

Well, the summer is really here and it is

very hot indeed! Our dear ladies will not
be doing the Table Top Sale on Camposol
B until September. Most other charities
have done the same. In the meantime, we
are still collecting bric-a-brac in readiness.
We would also like to ask you all to sort
out any broken jewellery or odd earrings
you may have to donate. Our dear friend
Susan in Camposol is very kindly making
new jewellery and is very good at it!
Sadly, Arthur is now suffering from illhealth and is awaiting specialist treatment,
so for the time being we will have to
suspend the visits to the families in need
until his treatment is completed.
We
hope and pray this will not be too long,

Have you ever been?

Do you know?

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

Well, we are getting near the end, for

the time being anyway, of that great
topic the recent and undefined past
tense.
The definition doesnt exactly
trip off the tongue, but I hope that those
who have been reading these articles do
actually know what I mean which is an
achievement in itself.
Of course our first aim should always be
to learn Spanish that is of practical use,
so I thought we could tackle an everyday
kind of question using our new tense and
think about possible answers. Obviously I
dont know who you mix with or what kind
of conversations you have, so Ive gone
for a typical conversation gambit which
we might all say or be faced with at some
time.
Has estado en Inglaterra?
Have you been to England?
Has estado alguna vez en Gales?
Have you ever been to Wales?
Has visitado Madrid?
Have you visited Madrid?
Has visto la Alhambra?
Have you seen the Alhambra Palace?
These are the kinds of things we ask people
when we are getting to know them as we
try to establish common ground.
Of course there is another variation to
these questions which you will commonly
use and hear. In English it is Do you know
? Which in Spanish is Conoces ?
I might say to a Spanish person Has
estado en Inglaterra? or Conoces
Inglaterra? These two questions really

amount to the same thing.

Here we are using the verb conocer which
we have translated as know, but means
this in the sense of to be familiar with.
This is different from the verb saber which
means to know facts.
We can be familiar with places, people and
also tunes, films or books; all of which
would require the verb conocer, whereas
to know statistics, directions or any other
kind of information requires the verb
saber, as in that long-standing favourite,
no s (I dont know).
Going back to the question above about
Madrid, here are some possible responses.
This example is more realistic for us as I
know most of you have been to England
many times.
Has estado en Madrid?
Conoces Madrid?
S, he estado en Madrid.
Yes, Ive been to Madrid.
S, conozco Madrid.
Yes, I know Madrid.

Hace mucho fro.

Its very cold.
(Both statements are true, depending on
the time of year.)
He estado en la autova pero no he
visitado la ciudad.
Ive been on the motorway, but I havent
visited the city.
He estado en el aeropuerto pero no
conozco la ciudad.
Ive been in the airport, but I dont know
the city.
No, no he estado en Madrid.
No I havent been to Madrid.
No he estado nunca en Madrid.
I have never been to Madrid.
No conozco Madrid.
I dont know Madrid.
(Now for that essential phrase aimed at
improving diplomatic and
neighbourly relations!)
Pero me encantara visitar Madrid
algn da!
But I would love to visit Madrid some day!

He estado ah muchas veces.

Ive been there many times.
He estado ah una vez.
Ive been there once.

articles are available as e-books at www.

He estado ah varias veces.

Ive been there several times.
Me encanta.
I love it.
(This is the diplomatic response when
talking to people from Madrid!)
Hace mucho calor.
Its very hot.

Id
just
spent a week

At 8.30am I
drove south,

a
town
which
sits
in a valley
surrounded
by
the
Lower Tatra
Mountains.
With a population of around 75,000 it
seems smaller, especially in the centre.
Being wonderfully pedestrianised in the old
town, I parked my car a mile or so away
and headed through the narrow cobbled
streets to the main square which you see
here.

Founded
by
German
settlers,
its
architecturally easy to see that it once
belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary.
The central square oozes style, grandiose
buildings, traditional restaurants and cafs,
but my favourite building is the old rather
unassuming church at the far end of the
square. It dates back to the year 1303.
Remarkable!
During WW11, Banska Bystrica was at
the centre of anti-Nazi resistance in the
region. After fierce fighting, it was briefly
occupied by the German army, before being
liberated by the Red Army. Sorry, but it
sticks in my throat every time I have to use
that phrase liberated by the Red Army.
Theres a huge gleaming Soviet memorial
which actually stands at one end of this

12

picturesque square. Today, there are mixed

feelings about it, but its nowhere near
as controversial as the Soviet memorial
in central Budapest which I wrote about
previously.

the Black Forest. In 1993, UNESCO quite

rightly classified Banska Stiavnica as a
world heritage site.

I found myself a little caf and sat down

with my coffee/sticky cake and took the
opportunity to get myself back on-line for
the first time in a week. I trolled through
dozens of emails, more than half of them
junk, caught up on what was happening out
in the big bad world, the football scores and
took a depressing look at the stock markets.
Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye,
I noticed an old dear who was looking
somewhat disapprovingly my way. She
was screwing up her nose. Did I smell? No
cant be; Id had a shower before I left my
cottage that morning and had had a bath
every night. I shrugged it off, but it wasnt
until I left the caf later that I sniffed my
jacket and worked it out. I may have been
bodily clean but my clothes after a week
in a little cottage were saturated with the
smell of my open log fire. I was humming.
So what? I rather liked it. I smelled like a
mix of paprika and smoked cheese. Lovely!
I headed back to my hire car, double
checked my road map and then drove the
fifty kilometres to a town that I simply
adore. Banska Stiavnica, population
10,000. I first came here around ten years
ago and keep coming back.

The town was initially based on mining,

with the first inhabitants setting up camp in
the third-century BC. Through the centuries
it was populated primarily by Slovaks and
also skilled German settlers. Throughout
the late Middle Ages, the town became the
major producer of silver and gold in the
Kingdom of Hungary. With that industry
long gone, Banska Stiavnica which is
stuffed full of museums, traditional crafts,
churches and chapels, is a town known for
its rich cultural and historical heritage. Not
a Starbucks, Subway or McDonalds in sight!
I simply wandered the streets for a couple
of hours, with a smile on my face. It really
is exquisite and could so easily have been
hundreds of years ago.

Why do I like it so much?

Does it boast a load of exciting modern
stimulating things to do? Trendy bars
and full on night life? Most definitely not.
I simply love the chocolate box, almost
fairy-tale feel of this medieval town. It is
so very hard to believe it was once part of
communist Czechoslovakia. Its easy to kid
yourself whilst standing in its tiny cobbled
streets that youre in a Germany town near

I slowly walked the three kilometres to my

accommodation Id checked into earlier; an
idyllic rustic farmhouse on the outskirts of
town. Built in the 1800s its now converted
into a pension. Upstairs, my room boasted
wooden beams and lace curtains, whilst
later down in the restaurant I was served
up platefuls of hearty country-style food.
Pitch black and deftly quiet both inside and
out, I slept well that night.
In the morning whilst sipping a brew
from the comfort of my own room, which
joy of joys had its own kettle, I decided,
being in the vicinity, I simply had to go on
a visit. It had been a few years since Id
had the pleasure. A twenty minute drive
cross country, sits the spa village of Sklene
Teplice. It boasts its own, totally natural
underground thermal cave where the
therapeutic waters are 42C - Ill tell you all
about that next month.

BBQ Recipes
Part of the Spanish experience is eating
outside and mainly food from the barbeque.
With the lovely weather and encouraging
the men to pick up the cooking tools, its a
relaxing way to dine. Below are a few more
of my favourite recipes and as ever are
easy to do with a little bit of preparation
so you can relax with your guests. I always
make my own burgers so I know exactly
what is in them and they taste so much
better than shop ones if I do say so myself.
I always fry them first to seal them which
will save them breaking up on the BBQ.
Below is also a sauce to coat the food with
which is very easy to do!
Buen Apetito
Easy BBQ Sauce
One Serving
1 tbsp olive oil
1 small onion, chopped
3 cloves of garlic
cup dark brown sugar
1 cup of tomato sauce
2 tbsp dark soy sauce
Salt and pepper
Heat the oil in a saucepan over medium
heat. Stir in the onion, garlic, brown sugar
and cook until onion is tender and sugar
has melted. Mix in ketchup and soy sauce.
Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, and
simmer 10 minutes.

Honey and Mustard Prawn Skewers

3 limes cut into 8 wedges
3 lemons cut into 8 wedges
18 large prawns
2 tbsp clear honey
1 tsp Dijon mustard
1 pinch dried red chilli flakes crushed

2 tbsp chopped coriander

2 tsp lime zest
2 tsp caster sugar
Finely chop the onion and crush the
garlic. Finely chop the white part of the
lemongrass then place in a large bowl
with the chicken, onion, breadcrumbs,
garlic, coriander, lime zest and sugar. Mix
together and then shape into burgers. Cool
in fridge for 1 hour before cooking on the
BBQ. Serve in a bun with lettuce, mint and
coriander.
Home Made Beef Burgers
500g minced beef
1 large onion
100g bread crumbs
1 egg
Mixed herbs
1 tsp tomato sauce
Beef stock cube
Mustard powder
Salt and Pepper
Olive oil

If using long wooden skewers for the

kebabs soak them in water for 20 minutes
first. Skewer the lemons, limes and prawns
on the sticks allowing 3 to 4 prawns per
stick. Mix the honey, mustard and chilli
flakes and pour over the kebabs and grill
for 3 to 4 minutes.
Lime Chicken Burgers
1 onion
1 clove garlic
1 lemongrass
400g minced chicken
60g white breadcrumbs

Chop onions and fry until golden brown. In

a large bowl mix together bread crumbs,
mince and cooked onions. Add salt and
pepper, mixed herbs and tomato sauce and
mustard powder. Add the stock cube by
sprinkling and mix in well. Finally add the
egg to blend and then make the mixture
into burger shapes. Fry in Olive oil for
about five minutes each side on a medium
heat and finish on the BBQ, this saves the
burgers breaking up.

Spicy Chicken
Buy 1 or 2 pkt of Fajita mix powder. Place in
a bowl and mix around the chicken portions
or legs, do not add water as the juice from
the chicken will make it stick to the skin.

Coat all over and leave to marinate if not

cooking straight away.

An Alien Affair, An Alien Rescue & An

Alien Warning are three consecutive
books, in order of publication, that add up
to a SciFi Trilogy.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

The author, Gordon Mackay, initially

started writing the first book whilst
studying with the Open University and
was in the Royal Air Force as an aircraft
technician. He worked on aircraft such as
the, Vulcan, Shackleton, Tristar, Nimrod
and Tornado. His chosen studies were
biology, medical & nursing. The older of his
two girls was born with a heart defect that
eventually ended her days at the young
age of twelve. Gordon earned himself a
BSc and is halfway to diplomas in both
Nursing & Psychology. Those University
subjects, and others - with his aeronautical
engineering knowledge, play a large part
in his published books. Together, they
add up to an action-packed, humorous,
romantic (with-adult-content) story of
alien-abduction and the imminent dangers
that threaten planet Earth, especially those
who live on it. The underlying theme of the
trilogy is alien-abduction and an action
packed storyline that makes it difficult to
put down the books.

Gordon resides in Southern Spain with his

wife, Phyllis, and are about to take up golf,
especially as both hail from St Andrews.

The first is to try and ensure that animals
receive prompt medical help when needed
and do not suffer unduly. If you are finding
it difficult to get the money together for
some treatment your pet needs, please

Our second aim is to assist with neutering
so that your pets can have quality lives
without the worry of unwanted litters and
puppies.
If you have taken on or rescued a new
dog or cat and would like it treated please
contact us. We can also provide this service
where a feral population is getting out of

What an amazing couple of weeks we

have experienced recently - days have
passed that have left many experiencing
the elation of being winners and of course
the downside is that just as many folk are
having to deal with the disappointment of
losing. From national populations to teams
and individuals, battles have been lost
and won and the winning and the losing
have brought out the best and the worst in
people. The reason is that everyone likes
winning and no-one likes to lose anything.
On the football pitch nations were fighting
for glory as France and Portugal battled it
out for national pride. At Silverstone on
that same Sunday, Hamilton and Rosberg
fought for those precious points to boost
their position on the scoreboard and Andy
Murray was also fighting hard to win the
Wimbledon Mens Singles title.

Post Brexit in the UK, millions are picking

over the bones of the vote to leave the
European Union, Political leaders are
rising and falling in the turmoil and the
uncertainty of the future ahead and in
reality no-one really knows what will
happen next as the UK and Europe enters
into uncharted territory. The winners are
celebrating and the losers are struggling
with their loss, trying to deal with the
bitterness that can so easily spring up in
our hearts when things dont go our way.
This is before the Rio Summer Olympics
even start, where again thousands of
athletes will try and prove that they are
the best in the world and that they are
winners and not losers.
How many times have you heard the words
spoken over you during your lifetime?
Never mind it was the taking part that
was the important thing. But every one
of us took part to win, not to lose!!

20

www.costacalidachronicle.com

Winning is in our make-up. Its in our

blood and if we are honest, we all want to
be on the winners rostrum receiving the
trophy and the victory crown.
Every day of our lives brings us the
opportunity to win or to lose. We make
decisions all the time that promote us to
the winners lounge or the losers shower.
Often the opportunity to go down the
track of winning or losing is outside of our
control when things like sickness affects
our lives. This brings other elements into
play and our winning or losing is not just
about getting well or not, its about how we
deal with the situation that has messed up
our lives, our retirement and our plans for
the future. The concept of losing but still
winning is hard to understand, but even in
times of desperate personal situations we
have the opportunity to climb up onto the
winners rostrum, raise that trophy high
in the air and crack open the magnum of
champagne!
In the Bible, our Christian lives are likened
to running a race and Scripture assures
us that all who run and finish that race of
faith will receive a glorious winners prize eternity with our Heavenly Father. Thats a
prize worth winning.
Sadly, many will miss out on this amazing
reward, because living a life of faith and
trust in God seems totally alien to the
majority living in this so-called modern
world. We trust absolutely in all of our
natural senses and do not need faith
when we can see, touch, hear, smell and
taste things, but to trust in God who we
cannot see; thats different. Faith is having
assurance and confidence in God. Its a
spiritual conviction of reality. I liken it to
a supernatural sense which enables us to
see the invisible things of God.

Why do we need faith to believe in

things we can see?
To stand and believe in faith that there is
a God who truly loves us more than we
can understand means that we have to
look past what our natural senses are
showing us and trust God with our lives
when we encounter situations where there
is nothing else to hold on to but Him.
The Apostle Paul, as he nears the end of
his physical life, writes in 2 Timothy 4: 6
8, For I am already being poured out
like a drink offering and the time for my
departure is near. I have fought the good
fight. I have finished the race. I have kept
the faith. Now there is in store for me the
crown of righteousness, which the Lord,
the righteous Judge, will award to me on
that day and not only to me, but also to
all who have longed for His appearing.
Have you got faith for the race of life?
Its a win/win situation for now and for
eternity. Dont just be satisfied with where
you are at. You could stay there forever!
Look forward and keep your eyes fixed on
the winning tape and your heavenly Father
will be cheering you on all the way to the
rostrum.

Costa Clida Chronicle - July 2016

At the time of writing we are well into July

and whoever controls the heating knob
has turned it up to FULL! Temperatures
are approaching 40C, hot sticky nights
and tempers on edge on the streets with
ALL of Madrid at the coast! Hey - its only
six weeks and far more preferable than 3
months of cold, wet, ice and snow in the
UK.
New foster dog arrives this week our
third. Its hard to let them go, but we
know we are helping in a very small way.
Consider fostering if you cannot take on a
full commitment to a four legged friend.
I am not going to get into an in/out Brexit
debate, but just to say what a mess.
No plan, no leaders of government or
opposition. Europe must be smiling at the
utter mess.
TV News
Summer always seems to be a quiet time
for news and new developments in the TV
world, so rather than repeat the issues of
the last few months I thought I would try
to give a simple guide to UK TV reception
in Spain.
For domestic use there are three ways
to get TV signals to television screens:
normal TV antenna, satellite dish and
internet feed.

Satellite
transmissions
are
the
primary way to receive UK TV. Signals
are beamed up to a satellite and then
broadcast back down to earth to an area
called the footprint. In simple terms the
satellite transmission is pointed at a central
location and the further away from that
location you get the weaker the signals get
and the bigger the satellite dish is needed
to get enough signal to decode to a TV
picture. In the case of UK TV, the centre
of transmission is Birmingham and by the
time it gets to Southern Spain the signals
are very weak and hence the need for huge
dishes seen on many UK owned properties.
With the right equipment TV reception
is good. There are two satellite systems in
operation FREESAT and SKY.
FREESAT channels are uncoded and open
for everyone to receive, whereas SKY code
theirs and subscriptions, in one form or
another, are needed to open the channels.
The last way to receive UK TV is from an
internet connection. This is a relatively
new way to watch UK TV, but I predict it
will be the only way in 10 or so years time.

(Satellites just cost so much to build/

launch and maintain and the mobile phone
companies want the TDT frequencies used
at present for TV transmissions)
Internet TV is in its infancy and there are
lots of different ways to receive it, but as
a general rule, reliable inclusive packs will
cost a subscription. These need not be
huge, but the systems must be maintained.
One of the big problems in Spain is getting
a fast enough, reliable and consistent
internet supply. Improvements are being
made continually and it will come to all, but
not every internet supply is at present good
enough to watch TV.
Rainbow Satellites have an inclusive
internet TV package that is easy to use with
no computer or geek operator needed to
watch an inclusive pack of TV, films and box
sets.
That is a simple guide to TV in Spain. It is
a specialised subject, so if you are thinking
of installing a system, get a reliable expert
in to discuss both your requirements and
possible solutions.
Thats it for this month I am returning to
the pool with a glass of wine and enjoying
the reason I live in Spain warm relaxation.

Spain has a nationwide digital TV service

with reception from a normal TV antenna
just like your TV antenna on your
chimney back in the UK where it is called
FREEVIEW in Spain it is called TDT. These
transmissions from transmitters dotted
all over the country have a fairly short

range (which is why we cannot receive

the UK signals and in Spain transmit some
20 odd TV channels BUT all in Spanish
no UK channels. Having said that TDT
does have dual language facility where if
a programme is bought in from abroad
and many are, including films, the original
language is available alongside the Spanish
dubbed version. If you just install TDT, you
will, most of the time, be able to find an
English language programme/film, but the
choice is limited.

World Water Week 28th August to 2nd

September
This important event in Stockholm is the
annual focal point for the globes water
issues. It is organized by SIWI. This year,
the theme is Water for Sustainable
Growth. It is also the 20th jubilee of the
Stockholm Junior Water Prize. In 2015,
over 3,000 individuals and close to
300 convening organizations from 130
countries participated in the event.

2016 is a critical year for addressing the

role of water in the post-2015 development
agenda. That agenda has been developed
through two pivotal events:
1. The adoption of the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDG) by the UN
General Assembly, charting the worlds
development course through 2030.
2. A new global climate agreement
adopted by COP 21 in Paris with important
implications for water related mitigation
and adaptation to climate change. 2015
was also the year of world summits on
disaster risk reduction and finance for
development. These events have profound
importance
for
water
development,
stewardship and management.

Experts,
practitioners,
decisionmakers, business innovators and young
professionals from a range of sectors and
countries come to Stockholm to network,
exchange ideas, foster new thinking and
develop solutions to the most pressing
water-related challenges of today.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

Water is key to our future prosperity

and together we can achieve a water
wise world.
The 2016 World Water Week programme
consists of more than 140 events of
different formats and covering a range of
subjects. During the 90-minute convenor
events, the most relevant topics relating
to Water for Sustainable Growth
will be discussed i.e. Financing, 2030
Agenda, Integrity, Gender issues, Climate
Change, Energy, Sanitation, Food, Conflict
Resolution, Water Management.

Plant of the month of August is the

Citronella (cymbopogom citratus) par
excellence. Its strong lemon fragrance can
be used to keep away flies and mosquitoes;
something much needed at this time of
year.

Informed by the World Water Development

Report 2016, the UN focused on water
and jobs at World Water Day in March
2016 as one of the key future water issues
- making a contribution to better the lives
of millions of people by maintaining and
creating meaningful jobs related to water
and wastewater development, service
provision, protection and management.
The World Water Week in Stockholm
will echo and follow up on the UN water
and jobs theme, but do so in the broader
context of sustainable growth and thus
directly and indirectly contribute to the
(proposed) SDG 8 to promote sustained,
inclusive and sustainable growth, full and
productive employment and decent work
for all. The theme will address sustainable
growth for all by focusing on inclusiveness
in terms of the societal and human
dimensions in all regions of the world.

The word Citronella describes the tropical

tree and fragrant grass, as well as the oil
that is extracted from the grass. Citronella
Oil is very popular around the world as an
all natural mosquito and tick repellant
and a number of sprays, candles, and
other products feature it prominently.
The
Citronella,
also
known
as
lemon grass, is well
known for its great
medicinal properties
as well as for use
in the kitchen, as it
is highly digestible.
Citronella
can

complaints
as
it
is
antispasmodic,

While the primary focus will be the water

for sustainable growth, World Water
Week will also follow up more generally
on the implementation of the water related
SDGs and the new climate agreement.
Firmly placed at the intersection between
policy, research and practice World Water
Week is also a natural place for exploring
new ideas and perspectives in the area of
water and sustainable growth between a
diverse set of actors.
Founded in 1991, the Stockholm
International Water Institute (SIWI)
provides and promotes water wise
solutions for sustainable development
in five thematic areas: water governance,
transboundary water management, climate
change and water, the water-energy-food
nexus and water economics.
In
June
2016
SIWIs
four-year
partnership with Botswanas Department
of Water Affairs, spanning from capacity
building to the development of a
water pricing strategy, was awarded a
certificate of excellence by the countrys
government. Botswana is a semi-arid
country set to experience increasing
water scarcity. In the capital Gaborone,
water restrictions have had to be
instituted because of water shortages and
national water agencies account for their
performance to stakeholders (such as
farmers associations, agricultural training
and research institutes, local councillors,
and mining companies) and incorporate
their views into annual work plans. It is
an unusual event participants interact
directly with the Minister and directors of
water agencies.

antiseptic,
astringent,
antibacterial,
antifungal and can be used as an
antidepressant, sedative or tonic.
Citronella can be found as a potted plant
during the summer months and it seeds
all year. The time to plant it out is in late
spring. The seeds can be planted in very
well drained soil in both the ground and
pots.
Organic manure is recommended and it
should also be fumigated whenever you
can and can be grown with plants that we
use in the kitchen. Citronella does not
usually want a lot of water and always try
to check the soil before watering, hence
the importance of good drainage where it
is planted.

outside the present Cehegin.

When
the Moors invaded at the start of the 8th
Century, while the two towns of Mula
and Begastri are named in the Treaty of
Teodmiro of 713, nothing of significance
seems to have existed in the area
between. Indeed, it was only around the
10th to 12th Centuries that a settlement
developed at Bullas during a period of
prosperity for the region under the Moors.
On the dominant El Castellar hill to the
south of Bullas are the remains of a
Moorish castle of the time, with another,
small castle in the town itself. In the
mid-12th Century, there may have been a
collection of houses by this small castle in
the Plaza Vieja, together with a mosque
and nearby cemetery. Today, the only
remains of the castle are stone blocks
incorporated in houses in Calle Peseta.
In the cellars of some of these houses
are remains of the old town walls.

When the Christian Reconquest arrived

in the mid-13th Century, Mula was given
authority over Bullas, whose Arab
population joined an uprising in 1264.

In 1855, in less

died from cholera and another 163
from the same cause in 1885, when
the inhabitants of Mula tried to stop
the people of Bullas using the waters
of the Rio Mula in consequence.
In
1887, chickenpox, cholera and smallpox
killed over 400! Incredibly, Bullas still
continued to develop and in mid-century
was recorded as having 966 houses of
two floors, six mills and an olive oil mill,
four brandy factories, one tile factory and
two inns.

downs. At the beginning of the century,

vines were devastated by disease and
there was even a revolt against local
taxes in 1916-17, but the Caravaca to
Murcia railway began construction in
1922, being completed in 1932, although
it is now closed and its track a walking
and cycling route known as the Via
Verde. Bullas even became renowned
nationally when one of its sons, Diego
Flomesta Moya, was the sole survivor
of a battle in Morocco in 1921, but he
starved to death when he refused to
tell his Moroccan captors the location of
the Spanish cannons. He is said to be
the only Bullas native who has a street
named after him in Murcia City.
In the Spanish Civil War, Bullas was in
the Republican zone. Of the 2,000 who
were mobilised from the town, about
one-tenth failed to return. Subsequently,
the towns population fell by over 1000
between 1935 and 1940 with substantial
outmigration thereafter. It was in the
1960s that economic revival began
with a new drinking water and sewerage
system established. Since then, the path
has been generally upwards, even if the
first recorded royal visit in the towns
history, of King Juan Carlos, followed
the economic damage caused by heavy
snowfall in the 1980s! Today, agriculture
and especially the wine industry, remain
very important, but the economy has
diversified somewhat with numerous
local crafts also in evidence. Even so,
in very recent years, Bullas, like many
similarly situated places has found it has
a battle to retain its population given its
size, location and limited industrial base.
Thus, while the years between 1981 and
2011 saw a slow but consistent growth
from 9,666 to 12,244 inhabitants, the
period to 2015 has seen a reversal with
a fall to 11,753. However, this in no
way detracts from the towns charm and
offering to the visitor and it is well worth
a good look.

Thereafter, Christian settlers came and
the Arab population disappeared, some
heading to the area around Granada which
was still under the Moors control. Along
with Caravaca and Mula, Bullas then
passed under the control of the Knights
Templar. If, in 1347, it was decreed that a
new castle should be built in Bullas, this
regrettably did not foresee the ravages
of pestilence which decimated the area
so badly, that even in 1593, only three
families were recorded as living in Bullas.
Things seem to have picked up in the 17th
Century with the population recorded
as 170 in 1660 despite the ravages of
plague and floods in mid-century. From
1444, Bullas had been under the control
of Cehegin, but gained its independence
in 1689, flourishing to the extent that the
population grew to around 3400 by the
end of the 18th Century. New buildings
were constructed at this time such as the
Church, the Town Hall and the Prison,
with perhaps no more than 25 families
being significant landowners.

Zacchaeus was unpopular, Thomas doubted,
Paul had poor health, and Timothy was timid.
The 12 men Jesus asked to be His apostles could
have offered lots of reasons why they were not
fit to serve. They were common men with no
special standing in the eyes of the world, yet
when Jesus called, they came:
When Jesus calls us to follow Him, Hes not
looking for the smartest or the strongest or the
most brave. He doesnt check our rsum, or
call our list of references.
Scripture is full of stories of women and men
who were used powerfully by God despite their
lack of experience or expertise. How about you?
Is God asking you to accept an assignment that
seems far beyond your comfort zone? Are you
afraid that you might fail? Are you afraid that
you might succeed?
Take heart those whom Jesus chose to be His

changed the world not because of themselves,
but because of the One who empowered them.
They were part of something wonderful.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE We Help

People
We are ever thankful for the generosity of
people in the area. Your support enables
us to continue to help the less fortunate
whose lives are eased somewhat with not
only the food we provide for them, but also
the clothing, furniture, bedding and even
basic toiletries.

(type mad.mazarron in the search box at

the top of the Facebook page).

Last month we took delivery of almost 4000

kilos of food from El Banco de Alimentos
de la Region de Murcia (The Murcia Region
Food Bank) for whom we are authorised
distributors. This was gratefully received on
behalf of our clients and will be distributed
during the months to come. We currently
have over 200 people registered and we
provide over 60 bags of food every month
as well as other essential items.

Could we once again appeal for toiletries

such as toothpaste, shampoo, shower gel
and sanitary towels please? Baby wipes
and other baby products are also welcome
to enable us to give these items to our
families on our aid days. These items can
all be left at our various pick-up points and
donation bins. These are all listed on our
Facebook page mentioned above.

Both our shops are closing for the month

of August as the temperatures soar, but
our dedicated volunteer transport team
and outreach team are still working hard
as always. If you have any donations for
us, please call Badr on 603 389 006

Could we once again ask our supporters

and the readers of this article to LIKE us
on our Facebook page? News of all the
aid days, shop opening times, events and
photos can be seen there on https://

We were thrilled to be involved with the

Summer Fte on Camposol A where some
of our donated clothes were modelled
by the lovely ladies there. Many thanks
to Marge, one of our founding members,
for her on-going and truly indispensable
support. A great time was had by all and

Well the summer is truly here with high

temperatures and long sunny days, but it
has not stopped our regulars from coming
along and enjoying their morning at
Forget Me Not we must not forget our
volunteers, as we couldnt function without
them; a BIG thank you to all.

We would also like to take this opportunity

to thank Marjorie and Mike Drummond
who raised a fabulous 160 for Forget
Me Not from a Golf Tournament that was
held at Camposol Golf Club and also to the
Golf Club who donated 30 from their Quiz
Night.
The Forget Me Not Volunteers organised
a fabulous lunch to celebrate 4th July
when everyone took a little something
for the lunch table. Trevis Bar came up
trumps again and donated a tray of mixed
sandwiches and we send a big thank you to
Trevis; you are always so generous. This
was very much enjoyed by all.
Something we forgot to mention in last
months piece and I apologise for this,
which was to thank Age Concern and Mags
for letting us join forces in the festivities
at the Street Party of 1st June. It was an
enormous success.

we raised some well needed funds too.

Well done to all involved!

Thank you to all our generous donators,

supporters and especially to our caring and
kind-hearted volunteers who give their
time selflessly in order to improve the lives
of others.
If you would like more information about
what we do, or would like to get involved
please get in touch via Facebook, email
madmazarron@live.com or call 634

Also, last but not least, thank you to the

Leos who have been volunteering over the
last few weeks and are doing a sterling job.
Again, if anyone feels that they could spare
a couple of hours on a Monday morning or
additional help on our Friday Table Top
Sale, you will be very welcome, or just pop
in for a cup of tea or coffee and see how
we work.
Forget Me Not meets at the Cultural
Centre on Camposol B 10.30am-1.30pm
every Monday.

Costa Clida Chronicle - July 2016

Part I
Full of excitement and expectation and
after weeks of meetings and planning, the
famous five met up to organise the jam
sandwiches and pop needed before their
summer adventure.
Sorry, this is not Enid Blytons Famous
Five story, but the yachts, Lotti, Berti,
Ganty, Gemini J and Baltic Moon from
the SAMM Cruising Group with their 18
crew members and their cruise to Ibiza
and Formentera.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

Lotti packed
aboard four
trolley loads
of
water,

and
food;

on
a two week
sail.
With
each
crew
m e m b e r
bringing
a

homemade
dish
with
them, they
would only need to top up with some fresh
meat, vegetables and fruit mid-cruise.
Starting from 3 different marinas, San
Pedro, Torrevieja and Thomas Maestre
and because two boats had somewhat
inexperienced owner/skippers and crews,
the plan was to sail to Calpe on June 8th
and across to the islands on June 9th in
flotilla. Both legs are around 62 nautical
miles and about 12 hours depending on
the weather. Once on the islands each boat
could go its own way and meet up again
for a birthday celebration after a week and
then at the end for the return crossing.
Baltic Moon, restricted by the bridge
opening times at Thomas Maestre, left a
day early for Santa Pola. An early start was
needed for the others, so at 5am on the 8th,
Lotti, Berti and Gemini J left San Pedro

40

and found a
favourable
wind which
gave a great
sail
until
9am
when
it dropped,
so
they

3pm
then a final

to

62
miles at an
average
of
just
under
5 knots - perfect. Ganty had also left
Torrevieja at 5am, so arrived earlier and
secured a berth for the night, but there was
none for Baltic Moon, so she continued to
Morayra. The other three anchored behind
the Punta de Ifach Rock which turned out
to be a bad decision as nobody had any
sleep due to a bad swell all night.

5am the next morning was when the the

plan went wrong. Ganty called to report
their engine would not start and Baltic
Moon called with battery problems so
both were stuck for the day. Lotti, Berti
and Gemini J weighed anchor to find the
bay blocked by a large fishing fleet, but
managed to thread their way through
them to start their crossing. Oh the joys
of boating!
The highlight of the day was encountering
a pod of about 30 small dolphins or perhaps
porpoise, the largest group any of us had
ever seen. They spent 20 minutes playing
around the three boats, diving under,
swimming on their
backs and leaping
clear of the water; a
great experience. We
arrived in Cala Saona
on Formentera after
12 hours, had dinner
then crashed out
absolutely shattered
after
36
hours
without sleep.
Next morning, we
on
Lotti
inflated
the tender, fitted
the outboard, which

had been tested as part of our pre-trip

preparations and set off for Sabina town to
check the forecast and watch a Euro 2016
match. After 10 minutes the outboard
died and could not be re-started. I cant
remember which of the colourful names
we decided to call the outboard thereafter!
All three boats left at 4pm and had a nice
sail to Porroig bay on Ibiza for another
peaceful night. We heard that Ganty and
Baltic Moon had crossed during the day.
Saturday was another lazy morning then
we on Lotti and Berti had a great sail at
speeds of up to 6 knots to Cala Tarida,
passing through the channel between
Ibiza and the small Islote Vendranell en
route. Shortly after we arrived there was
a wedding on the beach, then around
8pm we saw how the rich and famous
live. A massive, metallic grey, super yacht
anchored across the mouth of the bay so
its helicopter could land on the helipad and
disgorge the owner. Ten minutes later the
boat left slowly and gracefully disappeared
into the dusk. Baltic Moon joined Gemini
J in Porroig and Ganty, whose crew had
traced the source of their engine problems
to a loose connection, went to marina
Bonifach in Ibiza town where there was
another wedding being held on the beach obviously a popular idea on Ibiza.
Sunday we two continued on to Cala Basa
and, with a calm sea, were able to slip
through the shallow channel between Isla
Conejera and Ibiza, arriving at 1.30pm
so some crew could go ashore to watch
the Grand Prix. We again were joined by
Gemini J and after it got dark another
super yacht was guided in to a safe
anchorage by its tender. Ganty stayed
in Ibiza town and Baltic Moon, with reoccurring battery problems went to San
Antonio marina.
On Monday we and Berti set out early for
Cala Salada where we, on Lotti, enjoyed
a Full English brunch. All boats, except
Ganty, made their way to San Antonio
marina during the day for the planned
get-together to celebrate the birthday of
Gemini Js skipper. After the meal the
adventurous ones stayed out to see some
of San Antonios infamous night life, rolling
home, no doubt due to the affects of being
on a rocking boat for a while, in the early
hours.
Tuesday Lotti left San Antonio to sail the
15 miles to Cala Portinatx, a really beautiful
little bay and meet Ganty who was coming
anti-clockwise round Ibiza. A very hard
sail beating into 18-23knot winds and 1.5
meter swells took 6 hours. Dinner, then
ashore to a bar for the skipper, but bed
for the crew as he had worked us so hard.

We are so

again. This
is their 6th

Both

from a rare

This years summer camps will be made up
of Norwegians, Swiss, Dutch, British and
Spanish kids - a truly international venue!
What about the horses!
Weve had our first summer colic. Sandros wasnt too good so out came our vet,
Jos. Lois was a perfect helper, whilst Libby lent a hand feeding the others. Happy
to say all are now well and looking forward
to meeting our summer visitors.

Bruxism: (Grinding of teeth during sleep)

A sleep disorder treated by Dentists.
After calling for an appointment because
you think you need a filling the dentist may
take a look at your mouth and say: You
probably suffer from a sleep disorder.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

You may have had headaches for several

years that you did not attribute to your
mouth which may be a consequence of the
disorder Bruxism. What gives it away is
a wear on your teeth possibly caused by
clenching and grinding your teeth, a habit
unconsciously performed whilst sleeping.
Usually, when I have to give a diagnosis
of Bruxism, patients look at me as if Im
crazy. The involuntary habit of grinding and
clenching teeth without chewing, affects
between 15% and 20% of the population.
People who have the condition of Bruxism
often also experience headaches and aches
in the muscles of mastication, neck, teeth

44

sharpens as Hypertrophy prolongs time

and pressure.

and ears.
Why does Bruxism occur?
Even today we do not know exactly why this
disorder occurs, but we know that it has
multiple triggers. Mainly it is associated with
stress and sleep disturbances or somnias
and although these factors are unclear its
sufficient to say that the clenching and
tooth grinding are signs and symptoms
of part of a pathological entity. However,
this often happens in the same family; a
pattern of wear and squeaking persists
suggesting that Bruxism has a genetic
component although the investigations are
still inconclusive.
Does Bruxism happen when you grind
your teeth regularly?
The big problem with Bruxism is that
every time you press or grind your teeth
the active muscles of mastication produce
three situations:

Hypertrophy Muscles (increased muscle

size by increasing the size of their fibres).
This increases the force which they are able
to tighten, so wear and erosions on teeth

A break or crack in some muscle fibres

producing contractures in the shoulders,
neck or facial muscles causing pain and
discomfort.
The mandibular joint (between the jaw
and head) causes pain and sounds when
opening and closing the mouth. Dislocation
and ear disorders like Tinnitus may develop.
Clenching Your Teeth When Sleeping
If you push and grind your teeth during
the day this is primary Bruxism. If
clenching occurs whilst sleeping at night,
you will suffer secondary Bruxism at night.
Studies show physiology of sleep in order
to discover this disorder.

Bruxism is the relationship between sleep

physiology which is a topic for another
article. It is believed that an imbalance
between direct and indirect neural pathways
of the basal ganglia (a group of structures
linked to the thalamus-mass of grey
matter in the fore brain relaying sensory
information) occurs in the base of the brain
and affects co-ordination of movement.
In other words there are a number of
phenomena during phases of sleep that
end up generating tooth clenching.
Occlusion Splint
Treatment of Bruxism is an entity produced
by many factors. Today there is no
specific strategy to manage Bruxism, but
treatment is usually with the use of a splint
occlusion or occlusal plate. Originally this is
built as a device that is placed between the
upper and lower teeth to prevent or slow
down wear and abrasions on the teeth. It
places the jaw in a relaxed position, which
allows muscle recovery and Hypertrophy
resulting in a decrease in pressure.
The diagnosis and treatment of Bruxism
is simple. Remember, its always better to
be safe than sorry, consult your trusted
Dentist.

Petition Calls for UK to Guarantee

Pensioners Healthcare
The Brexit petition on the UK governments
website calls for British authorities to
commit to healthcare arrangements for its
retired citizens living in EU member States,
including Spain.
The petition, which has only just been
launched, has netted 3,340 signatures, but
it needs 10,000 before the UK government
is obliged to respond and 100,000 before it
is required to debate the issue in Hansard.
It is gradually finding its way around social
networks.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

Currently, in Spain, any British national in

receipt of a State pension from the UK or
over State retirement age is entitled to use
the medical services free of charge, with
prescriptions payable at discounted rates up
to a maximum of 8 a month. The British
government pays Spain 4,200 a year per
head to cover, or at least help towards the
bulk of, its pensioners healthcare in Spain.
Knowing they were covered by the joint
arrangement, few pensioners bought health
insurance when they moved to Spain. Whilst
insurance to fund private healthcare in the
UK meant better quality and quicker service
with no waiting lists, Spains health service
ranks second from top in Europe and waiting
lists are very short compared with those of
Britains NHS. Some have chosen private
health insurance so they can attend clinics
run by northern Europeans who are more
likely to speak English fluently, but those
who have never had the need and have
aged since they resettled in Spain know
they would be unable to afford prohibitive
premiums due to pre-existing conditions
suffered since emigrating or, even if they are
healthy, merely because of their age.
Non-pensioners from EU countries living in
most regions in Spain are able to access free
healthcare if they have been registered as
a resident since before April 2012 and earn
less than 100,000 a year.
Gibraltar Calls for Second Brexit/
Bremain Referendum
96% of its voters backed Remain. The
enclave is in talks with Scotland, since the
Chief Ministers of each say it is unfair that
their people should be forced out of the
single market and free movement agreement
without their consent.

48

There are concerns about Spains continued

threats that the Rock would not be able to
enjoy free movement of workers unless it
agreed to joint sovereignty. The advantages
of being within the EU are enormous for
Gibraltars inhabitants. Gibraltar is exempt
from the Common Agricultural Policy
(CAP), the application of intra-state IVA,
the Customs Union and the Common Trade
Policy (CTP).
Gibraltar has been British for 303 years
and in 2002 the people living there
overwhelmingly rejected a potential joint
sovereignty agreement, saying they want to
remain British.
Petition Online For Government to Allow
Joint UK-Spanish Nationality to Brits
Following Brexit
A petition on Change.org is calling for the
Spanish government to allow dual nationality
to Brits living in Spain after 10 years of
residence. The petition, which gathered
over 3,000 signatures in its first two days,
points out that a Brexit could leave British
nationals living in Spain in legal limbo, which
may lead to many deciding they had no
choice but to become Spanish.
Although Spain allows dual nationality to
anyone from its former colonies including the
Latin American countries, the Philippines,
Equatorial Guinea, Portugal and Andorra,
citizens from anywhere else have to renounce
their nationality of birth in order to obtain
a Spanish passport. Britain, by contrast,
allows Spaniards living there to become dual
UK and Spanish citizens after five years.
To obtain Spanish nationality, applicants
need to have lived in Spain for 10 years
and take a cultural test, which covers brief
outlines of the political structure, famous
people, basic geography and day-to-day law.
The law on joint nationality could easily be
changed, since a new ruling last year means
that anyone, anywhere in the world, who
can trace their direct ancestry back to the
Sephardic Jews deported from Spain during
the Inquisition in 1492, is automatically
entitled to joint Spanish citizenship.
Barcelona Bans Segways On Seafront
Barcelona city council has banned Segways
and other similar vehicles from the seafront
until October 1st. The promenade between
the Hotel Vela and the C/ Marina is now
pedestrian-only. The
move
has
proven
unpopular with the
companies
which
hire
out
Segways.
They say they never
cause problems with
pedestrians on the
esplanade
because
they run guided tours
with
experienced
instructors.
Fines of up to 90 are
applied for offenders,
or to the hire company

www.costacalidachronicle.com

if the user is not the owner, which also means

the companies will be liable for customers
behavior.
Riding these vehicles in a dangerous or
inconsiderate fashion - including breaking
the speed limit - will attract fines of up to
1,125.
It is not clear whether the seafront ban on
personal mobility vehicles also includes
mobility scooters, although some vehicles
may be allowed, but legal requirements such
as proper working lights and public liability
insurance are likely to be applied.
In Benidorm, mobility scooter hire firms are
now required to ask for proof of disability
before letting customers rent them and,
without this proof, only let them be used by
customers of a certain age.
Spanish Airlines Want To Scrap Passport
Control At Departure Gates
Airlines operating in Spain have urged the
Ministry of Transport to scrap the requirement
for passengers to show their passports or
national ID cards at the departure gates,
in order to speed up the boarding process.
They have also called for more human and
financial resources to be employed to make
searches, checks and general handling
quicker, especially at passport control where
queues tend to build up in summer.
Spain is one of just four countries within
the 26 nations in the Schengen zone, along
with Italy, Portugal and the Czech Republic,
where passports or ID cards have to be
shown at the boarding gates, and this slows
proceedings down by an average of five
minutes even on flights which are not busy.
Passengers flying into Spain from the UK,
however, would still need to show their
passports at the boarding gates and continue
to do so when flying from Spain to the UK at
passport control before exiting the building,
since Britain is not in the passport-free
Schengen zone.
Tuberculosis Outbreak At Castelln
Primary School
Three children in reception class have been
found to be carriers, although only one of
them so far has developed the disease,
according to regional health authorities.
Pupils were tested after a child was admitted
to Castelln General Hospital in May, where
he remains in isolation.
Eight In 10 Spaniards Seek Flexible
Working Hours To Spend Quality Time
With Their Pets
Four in 10 Spaniards take some of their
annual leave from work to spend time with
a brand-new pet and help them settle in and
as many as 80% have asked their bosses for
more flexible hours so they can have quality
time with their pets. A quarter of pet-owners
said they would even change their job to
ensure they could work their office hours
around their pet. 40% say they think of
their pets more often than they think of their
partners and actually love them more than
their other halves!

for looking after the entrance tickets and
Brian for taking all the photographs. The
entertainment was provided by Terry J who
soon had everyone up dancing and singing
along.

In June we had The Ladies Day which was

held at The Club House, Camposol. There
were 160 ladies who had a great afternoon
and thoroughly enjoyed themselves with
an excellent buffet and superb bar service.
The Fashion Show, clothes provided
by Age Concern, MAD and MABs, was a
great success and there were plenty of
bargains to be bought afterwards. Thanks
to Pat Hankinson for doing a brilliant job
compering and keeping the models in order.
Thanks also go to Yvonne for organising

The 6 course meal, which included wine,
beer and water, was excellent and served
very promptly. The music was provided
by Rob Sweeney, who did a very good job
and soon had nearly everybody dancing (I
couldnt as I was too full!) All too soon the
coaches arrived to take everyone home,
tired, but having had an enjoyable evening.
Next Book Swaps are on 6th & 20th
September at 10am, when you can
exchange books, jigsaws and magazines.
This is held on Camposol B, in the old ICA
centre on the dual carriageway.

We also had the Summer Ball which was

held at The Hotel La Cumbre in Puerto
de Mazarrn. I think this was the best
one held there so far. Over 200 people
attended, the majority wearing their best
bib and tucker, as they used to say. The
room and tables looked as lovely as ever
in pink and white. The views from the
terraces must be some of the best locally
and this is where the champagne reception
took place and where the photos were
taken. These photos can be viewed on the

Costa Clida Chronicle - July 2016

Why is it so important?
If you do not make a will the inheritance
process will be much longer, complicated,
expensive and in the worst scenario, your
inheritors will need to start proceedings.
The Tax Office will require more official
documents to complete the inheritance
process.
Your inheritors will also need more legal
assistance to take care of these matters
while they are suffering your loss.
In addition, there is a new European
regulation regarding these matters that
increases the importance of signing a
will. This is the UE Regulation 650/2012
which came into force on 17th August
2015 that states if you are living in Spain
permanently the Notary must include a
clause in your will saying that you choose
your national law as the applicable one to
your inheritance process. It must be noted
that this regulation affects everyone even
if you made a will before this regulation
came into force.
What should I do if I have signed
my Spanish will before this new
Regulation came into effect?
You need to check your will to see if you
stated to choose your national law in
your will. If you can see this clause in

the document you can relax; your will is

completely effective in Spain. However,
it is more than likely this clause does not
exist in your will and you will need to sign
a new one to include this clause.
If I have not chosen my national law
as the applicable one to my inheritance
process, how could this affect me?
It is strongly recommend that you speak
to a Lawyer as soon as possible. They will
expertly check your existing will to check if
you have chosen your national law or not.
If it is not there and you wish this to be
added, they can arrange for you to amend
your existing will.

We can deal with your situation in your

behalf. We are expert lawyers who are
used to dealing with these matters. If you
find yourself in this situation and you would
like us to check you will for you, please
contact us. If you need more information
on these matters, please call and make an
appointment. Always make sure you deal
with certified lawyers who are a member
of the BAR.
Corral & Alcaraz Law Firm
Lawyers, Barristers & Accountants

As you may know, the British (for

example) regulation and the Spanish one
are dissimilar. The main difference is that
the Spanish must follow the legitimacy
rules, while if you are British, you are free
to name as heir the person(s) you choose.
It means that if you have not chosen your
preferred law and you are married with
children and you have named as heir your
husband/wife in order he/she will be the
whole owner of your property, you should
know that this is not going to happen after
your death. According to the Spanish
law, your husband/wife only can use the
property (he/she will have a life interest
on the property), but the children will be
the owners in equal parts. As a user of
the property, your wife/husband cannot
sell the property or modify it without the
agreement of all the owners.
The situation is more complicated if you
want to leave your assets in Spain to
a friend, or just to one of your children.
That is not possible in Spain. A relative
will always take president because of the
Spanish legitimacy rules, so unless your
relative renounces in your friend/childs
favour, your will wont become effective.

Important
Matters
You
Should
Consider Before Signing A Spanish
Will, Even If You Have An Existing Will
It is likely that you have never thought
about making a will when you are
considering buying a property in Spain.
Your focus is probably more on buying
the correct property at the right price
and enjoying all the benefits of living in
the sun. However, if you buy a property
in Spain you should bear in mind that you
will need to make a will regarding your
Spanish property. This is vital, not only for
you but also for your inheritors.

One day in winter, as St Francis was going

help to detect early signs of corns,
bunions or infections.
2. Clipping, cutting and cleaning of
the toe nails prevents them from
growing inwards, which can cause
infection.
3. The elimination of dirt and bacteria
from your feet will also prevent nail
diseases, disorders and foot odours.

Pedicures are a great way to provide

Costa Clida Chronicle - July 2016

Part 1
Where to take it
Irresponsible disposal of rubbish can create
as many problems as illegal dumping of
rubbish.
How many people dump items that could
have gone in the recycling bins into the
general rubbish bins?
How many times have you gone to put
your rubbish in the bins only to nd it full
of cardboard boxes, plastics or garden
waste?

Make-up remover pads, baby wipes,

household cleaning wipes, many of which
advertisers encourage us to ush away
after use, do not break down in water;
much better to bin them.
The incorrect disposal of cooking oil by
tipping it down the sink can cause problems
in the sewers, especially if there has also
been the incorrect disposal of wipes down
the toilet. Cooking fats and oils that have
been poured down the sink, then solidify
and form a fatberg, blocking sewers and
causing sewerage back-ups; not a nice
thing to deal with. Furthermore, fatbergs
provide food for rats and cockroaches thus
assisting their breeding.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

The rubbish bin areas on Camposol are not

the place to dump unwanted furniture or
household items. Dumping of these items
can attract vermin and provide a breeding
ground for cockroaches and other insects.
There are a number of garden waste
skips and recycling points provided on
Camposol. There is also an Ecoparque
within a 10 minute drive as well as a
Mobile Collection service.

The pruning of the palm trees along

Avenida De Los Covachos was completed
within 3 days. This included pruning trees
on all six roundabouts in the sector.
The team also toured around the sector
collecting donated concrete ornaments,
the main one being a large ornate fountain
which we have erected in the triangle. Its
a pity we dont have a power and water
supply to the fountain as it would be quite
spectacular.

Hi everyone
This year is going so quickly. Were now
into August and hopefully over the worst
of the heat. We are now looking forward to
our Tarragona mini break as it promises to
be a really fantastic trip.

We helped a resident along Calle Babinas

clear away a small mountain of builders
rubble from the area directly in front of his
house, which will enable him to plant up
the area.
We met with residents who have requested
group assistance in the supply of gravel.
Two of the three residents are prepared to
lay the gravel themselves. The third one
would like the group to lay the gravel. The
total requirement is 20 tons.
We look favourably on projects where the
local residents want to be actively involved,
as this frees up the Gardening Group to
improve other areas.
You will be aware now that our new
website is up and running; much more
contemporary and user friendly.
We
managed to rectify the issue of the
insurance cover of the group van and trailer

facility. We are currently endeavouring to

secure liability insurance for the volunteers
when they are out and about. The new
website allows residents to request projects
by completing a simple online form which
will be automatically sent to a nominated
committee member for further evaluation
and discussion. One resident has come
up with a very good idea - The Lamp Post
Club. We will be having further discussions
with the resident and asking residents to
join the club - adopt the area between
lamp posts to create mini-gardens and
generally improve their local environment.
The group will contribute towards the
purchase of plants etc. More info online at

summer, there is still quite a bit of activity
around the sector. The Road Team was out
around the sector doing minor repairs on
several roads and a couple of hours was
spent in the campo, collecting a ton of
rocks to border the Calle Alcivaras project.
A second trip to collect another ton was
arranged to complete the bordering.

Summer is heating up and the ferals are

mainly staying out of the way and using
the heat of the day to sleep. A few kittens
are about, but compared to the same
time last year there are very few, which
is a good for everyone and of course the
welfare of the community cats here.
During August CKK will only be trapping
cats under certain circumstances (sickness
etc) mainly due to the extreme heat
getting trapped can cause cats extreme
stress and as cats cannot sweat they can
easily become over heated and collapse.
Some of the ferals have had kittens and

British Deputy Ambassador nnd Consul

Listen To EU Referendum Concerns
In a meeting on Tuesday 19th July local
British residents had the chance to put
their concerns about the outcome of the
recent EU Referendum to the Deputy
Ambassador, Tim Hemmings, and Consul
for Alicante, Sarah-Jane Morris. The British
Embassy representatives promised to
keep them up to date with developments
concerning the UKs exit from the European
Union.
The meeting discussed the practical
implications of the referendum outcome and
was hosted by the provincial government
of Alicante. Local government officials,
hoteliers and legal specialists spoke to the
recently appointed Mr Hemmings about the
key issues facing British nationals in Spain
after the EU membership referendum. The
meeting
also
heard
the
views
of
representatives from local English speaking
associations.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

Tim Hemmings reassured British residents

that they would Not experience any
immediate changes in their circumstances.
Recognising the high number of Brits living
in the Valencia region, he explained that the
rights of both British and Spanish citizens
to live, work and study in each others
countries had not changed and the UK would
remain a full member of the EU until exit
negotiations were completed. The Deputy
Ambassador emphasized the strong trade
and investment links between the UK and
Spain and said that the UKs relationship
with Spain would remain close after the
UKs exit from the EU.
Alicante Consul Sarah-Jane Morris added,
We are committed to listening to the
concerns of British nationals in Spain,
following the referendum.
It is also
important that we keep British nationals upto-date with any changes as we negotiate
our exit from the EU.

Referendum means for British nationals

the suffering these defenseless animals
have endured is beyond me. However,
the before and after photos of Maya and
Dinky Doo are what make it all worthwhile
and Maya is now in pony heaven with her
lush green grass.

A
s
mentioned
in previous
articles the
stable door is firmly bolted. We are
way over-subscribed with our equines and
have more waiting to come in. We are still
desperately searching for a secure piece of
land with a casita on to enable us to help

Two of our ponies have also moved on

to pastures new (there is a pun there
somewhere!!!) I have been assured they
are loving the lush, green grass and I
am sure those bellies will be looking very
rotund!!

As usual I will be on Camposol B Car Park

on Mondays 11.30am-1.30pm when you
can drop off any donations. Visit our shops
in Roldan or Mazarrn Town opposite the
Medical Centre, where donations can also
be dropped off 10.30am-2pm.

The Hazards of Heat

High summer temperatures may be a
welcome change for those looking to relax
on the beach this summer, but higher
temperatures pose an often hidden risk,
especially to vehicles and road safety.
The most vulnerable parts of the vehicle
in extreme temperatures are tyres, brakes
and shock absorbers, all of which are crucial
to keeping a moving vehicle under control
and stopping safely. Driving with tyres with
low pressure increases the probability of a
blowout by up to 60%, shortens its life by
up to 15% and increases fuel consumption
by up to 7%.

Remember not to exceed the maximum

permitted load, not only for the vehicle, but
also for the tyres. Weight should be evenly
distributed, with heavier items nearest the
ground and as near to the centre of the
vehicle as possible, maintaining a centre
of gravity wherever possible. Once loaded,
remember to adjust the tyre pressure as
per the manufacturers recommendations
and increase the pressure once the vehicle
is unloaded.
Never carry loose items in the interior
of the vehicle as these could become
projectiles in the event of heavy braking
or a collision and can seriously injure the
occupants of the car.

Europe-wide forces throughout the year,

including an exchange programme run
through the European Police College,
where information and knowledge on
practices and operations are shared
through the continent.
Guardia Officer Invents Life Saving
Device
A Guardia Civil traffic officer, Jorge Torre
Sarmiento, assisted by a marketing and
design expert, Roberto Prez Marijun,
has invented a device which should speed
up the time in which other road users are
advised of the presence of a disabled or
broken down vehicle, thus saving lives.

If carrying a protruding load, remember

not to exceed the permitted dimensions,
use a V20 warning sign on the rear and
make sure that lights and number plates
remain unobstructed at all times.

With the intense external heat, the engine

loses up to 15% power and potentially
even more as it drives the cooling and air
conditioning systems.
If the brakes overheat, this in turn can
increase consumption of brake fluid and
can cause a phenomenon known as
fading, which reduces the ability to slow
the vehicle down.
In order to reduce these factors and keep
your vehicle at its optimum, make sure
you frequently check tyres, brakes, shock
absorbers, oil, brake and coolant levels.
The battery, lights and air conditioning
should all be checked regularly, especially
before a long journey. If this seems like a
daunting task, you can always call into your
local maintenance garage and ask them
to do the checks for you. Many garages
already offer a comprehensive summer
service, although many drivers dont
realise that this is equally as important as
a winter service.
Aside from the safety aspects of the
vehicle, one common maintenance call
during summer is for the failure of air
conditioning units. Experts say that these
should be checked at least once a year
and before the summer, as for most of the
cooler months the units lay dormant and
can fail over time without being noticed.
Sometimes, the presence of an unpleasant
odour is an indicator of a failure of the
air conditioning. Air conditioning that is
working too hard can not only increase
the mechanical strain. An average air
conditioning unit will cool the vehicles
interior to around 22C and cooling the air
to 20C will increase fuel consumption by
up to 20%.
It is important to ensure that your vehicle
is correctly loaded before a summer trip.

European Police Patrolling in Spain

Once Again
Officers
from
the
French
National
Gendarmerie have joined colleagues
from the Guardia Civil in Spain as part
of the summer tourism operations aimed
at maintaining a safer environment for
international and domestic tourists in the
country.
French officers have been welcomed to the
Alicante town of Altea, amongst some of
the most popular tourist destinations for
French visitors. The Spanish Government
has implemented the 2016 plan, which has
proved a huge success in previous years,
not only because foreign visitors feel more
at ease when they see their own national
police, but shared intelligence through
the European-wide collaboration has been
proven to lead to a reduction in organised
crime across the continent.

In addition to the European assistance,

Spain also strengthens the presence of its
own security services in the tourist-rich
towns, including relocating officers from
the Guardia Civil and the police and the
opening of specially adapted offices where
tourists can be dealt with in their own
native language. The Valencia regional
police also increase controls in tourist
areas and so with the collaboration of all
forces, not only is security increased, but
the impact and risk of crime decreases.

When a vehicle becomes disabled, due

to an incident or break down, the driver
will often put on hazard lights, attempt to
restart the vehicle, call for assistance from
their breakdown or insurance service, put
on a high visibility vest, go to the boot
and place warning triangles on the road
advising of the presence of the disabled
vehicle. This process can take 8-10
minutes, during which time the vehicle is
left in a vulnerable position, presenting a
potential hazard to other road users and
the vehicles occupants.
In order to try to alleviate this problem
of vulnerability, made worse at night time
or when the vehicle has no power for the
hazard lights, the officer has invented
a device called Help-Flash which can
be used as a first indicator of a hazard
whilst the correct procedure of laying out
triangles is being carried out.
Jorge Torre Sarmiento has a number of
successful patents to his name, such as
a girolina, a device that allows young
children and the elderly to sharpen pencils
without any effort; a device for Formula
1 engineering teams to change tyres in
a matter of minutes by removing all of
the bolts at the same time and a set of
tweezers for a specific type of clothing.
Help-Flash is a small emergency light,
powered by a conventional battery,
which emits a flashing light visible for up
to a kilometre away. It is activated by a
magnetic support and can also be used
as a flashlight. Stored in the glove box,
the device can be activated in seconds
and placed on the exterior of the vehicle,
allowing the driver to then place warning
triangles and make the vehicle occupants
secure.

Costa Clida Chronicle - July 2016

Mid-Summer Thoughts
We are just half way through the summer
- another hot one. This month I would like
to talk about some wonderful national and
natural parks in Spain.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

I
had
the
pleasure
of
visiting
the
very
largest
natural park
in Spain, the
second largest
in Europe, just
a few weeks
ago and have
fallen in love
with it; surely
it will not be
my last visit.
The
Sierra
de
Cazorla,
Segura
y Las Villas,
approximately
214.000 hectares, is found

82

in the northern part of

the province
of Jaen, but
also in the
provinces of
Granada and
Albacete.
The town of
Cazorla
is
close to the
entrance to
the park and
seems
to
be
vertical
rather than
horizontal. Walking
from
place
to place is
great exercise, but the
views of the castle, from Moorish times and
the surrounding peaks, where circling buzzards play on thermals, are well worth the
effort. One wonders at the lonely towers
found throughout the park, perched high
on rocky crags, until you realize that the
importance of this area is in the water. Two
very important Spanish rivers are born in
these mountains; the splendid Guadalquivir, which flows majestically and navigable
through Sevilla, until reaching the Atlantic, but there is small, rapid and very cold
water, rushing over rock, through pine and
oak forests and the Segura, which wends
its way east to Guardamar in Alicante and
the Mediterranean. There are many other
smaller rivers and the park has hundreds of
kilometres of beautiful hiking trails; some
more challenging into the hills, others an
easy stroll along one
of the many rivers,
for example along
the River Borosa.
Other villages beckon, like La Iruela,
Arroyo Fro and beyond, into the province of Albacete with
Elche de la Sierra.
Tourism is important,
so hotels and rural
lodgings are plentiful, as are camping
sites. The gastrono-

my is amazing. One surprising thing about

Andaluca, for someone coming from Murcia, is that with each beer or glass of wine,
you receive a tapa, a delectable little dish
of something to eat; an economical way to
have lunch. Order a couple of caas and
your lunch is included in the price!

The town of Cazorla is also famous for its

Blues Festival at the beginning of July and
was the main reason for my visit. Artistes
from New Orleans, Mississippi, Chicago,
New York, Austin, among many others,
converge on this small out-of-the-way town
in the mountains, for 3 days of non-stop
music. Well worth putting into your agenda
for next July. Let Dragontours help you
plan for an Autumn or winter escapade to
one of the lovely spa hotels located in this
park, along with a few excursions in a 4x4,
accompanied by a knowledgeable guide
from the area. This way you are almost
guaranteed a view of some of the elusive
wildlife living in the park from deer, to Valverde lizards, to indigenous mouflons and
myriad bird life.
Some other suggestions for the summer:
Bi-weekly trips to Benidorm and enjoy a
great day out, visiting the market, pubs
and beaches this diverse city has to offer.
Visit the Fuentes del Algar.
Trip to Mojacar on August 12th.
September 20th to Jumilla for our annual
grape-stomping and wine tasting tour.
September 23rd the great battle between
the Carthaginean and Roman forces, for
the fun-packed fiesta in Cartagena.
Keep an eye on our Facebook page, to
keep up with news and latest information.

July Competition, Aguilon

Los Amigos Golf Society July competition
was held at one of the societys favourite
courses, Aguilon. Remarkably the date
seemed to clash with world consultation

of society members were either at the
doctors or the hospital with complaints
as interesting and varied as in-growing
toe nails, tennis elbow, knee and hip
joint problems, sciatica and athletes foot

Winner Division 1: the always reliable

June saw the resignations of the Board

of Directors of both local football teams,
Mazarrn FC and CD Bala Azul with
outgoing
Mazarrn
President
Jose

replacement to take the Club forward. At
the time of writing we have heard that
Mazarrn FC has a new President and that
the team was registered with the Murcia

hours before the deadline which is great
news for all its loyal supporters. Full details

Mazarrn FC has an excellent set up with
junior teams from 5-18 years in addition
to the senior team which will take its place

It was also announced that one thousand
copies of this t-shirt will be available for

The event took place in the City of Culture,
Santiago de Compostela.

Summer evening bowling continues with

September in Madrid.

Stage 20 is the nearest the race will come

stage sees the remaining riders face a
gruelling 184km route featuring a special
category climb, 3 x 2nd category climbs
and a 3rd category climb, ending with a
climb of 22kms, a slope of 1280 metres
and an average gradient of 5.72%.

This years Vuelta features 21 stages,

Last Race Day of the SAMM Spring

Series 2016
Sunday June 19th marked the last race day
of what has been a memorable SAMM
Spring Season.

The first race started in calm conditions

and, apart from being drenched by spray
from the jet-skiers, was fairly uneventful.
The four laps were completed in 30 minutes
and it was decided to increase the distance
between the buoys for the second as the
wind was beginning to pick up.

It was a closely fought race for the top

three places and the results could have
been different if the regular skippers on
Conny and Sirocco had been around for
the last race day. Each boat was able to
discard their worst three results so that 10
of the 13 counted.

Everybody had a good start and Cuatro

and RS Quba were neck and neck for much
of the race. All was going well until the 2nd
lap when Dos capsized on the downward
leg and retired. The RS Quba and Cuatro
continued to battle it out as Tres gained
on them inch by inch. The increased wind
speed made for an exciting race which was

Cuatro (Jack Moss, Di Hardwick and Derek

This was Johns first race outing in his new

Costa Clida Chronicle - July 2016

July saw the Los Reyes Society having

their last event before the summer break.
It may have been a bit on the warm
side, but everyone enjoyed and survived
the proceedings. The venue was the
tremendous Roda Golf Complex which was
prepared to its usual high standard.

Format for the day was 4-man teams doing

a waltz or a one two three scoring set up.
To make this a format where all teams have
a good chance of winning, it is vital that
teams are very balanced handicap wise.
We think we achieved this with there being
only 6 points between the four teams.
The day was sponsored by one of our long
term relationships with Luz del Sol who
provided us with a terrific trophy, the LDS
Waltz Challenge Cup. The winning team
captain, Glenn Shaky Read, led his team
of Karen and Kevin Jones plus Toddi Adams
to a one point win with a score of 68; a
narrow win but well deserved, as were the
performances from the other teams.

Costa Clida Chronicle - July 2016

A strong pound is not always good for

an economy; it makes exports expensive
and imports cheaper, causing a balance of
payments deficit. The same principle can
apply to Spanish property sales as I will
explain;
A large proportion of properties for sale in
the area are owned by British expats. After
checking our recent sales, it reveals around
65% of those vendors were repatriating
the proceeds of their property sale back to
the UK. With the exchange rate working in
their favour, many of those vendors were
happy to take a 10-20% reduction on their
property price and still convert their funds
into the same amount of UK pounds that
they would have had if theyd accepted
the full price for their property when the
exchange was at 1.44!
Last year when the pound was very strong,
owners repatriating to the UK were not
only very reluctant to accept an offer,
but a considerable number were actually
increasing the price of their property in
anticipation of a sale which would result
in them having to pay 1.44 for one UK
pound! In effect, buyers, this time last
year, were not getting better prices due
to vendors holding out for the full asking
price.

Post referendum, there has been a

slowdown in forward bookings for
September and October, but presently
there are still many prospective buyers in
rental and hotel accommodation looking to
find their Spanish property bargain. Walkins are a daily occurrence.
August has traditionally been a quiet
month due to holidays, but, as the dust
settles and the initial shock of Brexit fades
away, buyers will return. We anticipate
our diaries for September and October will
eventually begin to fill-up.
Most currency market analysts are
predicting a weaker Euro by the end of the
year, due to an anticipated Italian Banking
crisis and poor productivity figures for 3rd
and 4th quarters. Germany, France and
Italy are suffering particularly and the UK
will see higher growth than most of Europe
according to the IMF.
If you want to take advantage of the
low pound and put your property on
the market for a quick sale, now is a
good time to contact an agent.

In August 2015 the UK pound would

buy 1.37! Today it trades at 1.20!
Last year in July the pound had peaked at
1.44 it had been climbing for several
months, falling back to 1.26 in March
2016 prior to the EU Referendum. In the
days leading up to 23rd June, the pound
climbed a little to 1.31 as the currency
markets anticipated the UK would vote to
remain in the EU. The polls predicted
wrongly and the pound fell back to
1.15 a week after Brexit.

Coping With Strong Winds

by Dick Handscombe
Many expat gardeners in Spain have gardens
in exposed positions and have to cope with
regular or occasional strong gusty winds
that dry out the open garden soil and flower
pots, roll pots over and cause damage to
plants, even uprooting or snapping them
off. Such situations include mountain tops
and exposed ridges, narrow valleys, the top
of coastal cliff faces and penthouse terraces.
The gardening problems associated with
such sites were listed as equal fourth
together with the need for gardening with
less water when we did a readership survey
some years ago.
21 Practical Ideas
1. Preserve any windswept trees that
have survived years of storms as
appropriate features of you future
garden. Just cut off any unsightly
and misshapen branches, but think
before you cut out dead branches.
It may be them that adds shape and
atmosphere to the tree.

In association with Costa Clida International Radio and www.angloINFO.com

2. If a small copse of pine or holm oak

or pine trees has survived, keep
them as a valuable windbreak. If
you decide to fell some of the trees
around the outside to create space,
or in the centre to create a woodland
glade, recognise that you might be
changing the aerofoil characteristics
of the copse or even creating a
chimney effect in the centre. If one
or other occurs, the total copse
might be felled in the next gale force
winds, especially if the soil is soft
after heavy rains. The shape and
degree of leaning of natural trees in
the area will give you an idea of the
severity of past gales.

94

3. If you have no natural windbreak

consider planting a double row of
one metre high lawsonia, juniper,
taxus or evergreen oak trees. Ensure
that they are well staked and guyed
from day one. If in a very exposed
position re-guy as they grow.
4. An alternative to a screen of trees
is to construct a wall two or three
metres high, but ensure that the
foundations are strong and wider
than the wall so that the wall has
a broad base (e.g. of a metre) and
a narrower top (e.g. 40cms). Basic
urbanisation walls can be blown over
in strong winds.

5. Plant only deep-rooted specimen

trees and ensure that they are
strongly guyed on four sides. Avoid
acacias
and
eucalyptus
trees.
Occasionally one sees amazingly
tall deciduous trees on penthouse
terraces. You will find that their roots
have been trained to cover much of
the terrace and are guyed with thick
wire ropes.
6. Purchase heavy grade earthenware,
ceramic or concrete based pots
and containers. Lighter ones can
overturn,
break
and
damage
treasured plants especially if allowed
to dry out. A combination of strong
winds and blazing sun can easily dry
out even big pots in a day unless
precautions are taken.
7. Seal pots with waterproof paint
or varnish and add planting gel to
the potting compost to reduce the
natural evaporation of water.
8. Construct your main sitting-out
terrace on the downwind side of the
house and a secondary terrace on
the windy side for use on calm days,
especially if that is where you have
the best vistas.
9. Construct Dutch style reinforced
glass windbreaks at strategic points
in the garden that you can sit behind
and still enjoy the best garden views.
Plant some aromatic and colourful
plants downwind of the screen.
10. Similarly, glaze in nayas or covered
terraces on the windy sides of the
house so that you can sit in the sun
and enjoy views on the windiest of
days.
11. Plant plants that grow naturally
as a tight bush or an open tree to
minimise wind damage. Try the
following plants for instance:
12. Consider planting more succulents;
cacti, agaves and aloes that have
strong natural structures. Look
around to see what survives in other
gardens in your area and on local
mountainsides or cliffs.
13. Mulch as much as possible, as
bare earth soon dries out in windy
situations and hoed or raked areas
can be eroded by the wind creating
a parched hard packed and cracked

surface.
14. Install an economic drip irrigation
system to each plant and water at
night.
15. Add features to the garden that will
withstand strong winds if correctly
constructed e.g. rock grottoes,
rocky outcrops, rockeries, terraces
with a stone sundial or bird bath.
If you construct a pond, do so in
a sheltered part of the garden as
strong winds can whip off water
physically and by evaporation.
16. If you have a pool or Jacuzzi, invest
in a strongly constructed cover to
enable them to be used without a
wetsuit or windproof clothing. If you
can afford an all- weather swimming
cover you can also try to grow some
semi-tropical plants inside.
17. Plant internal hedges as internal
windbreaks
and
plant
them
downwind.
18. Low growing plants can be protected
by a semicircle of rocks. One sees
ancient vineyards and melons
protected in this way around the
Mediterranean Costas and Islands.
19. Protect young plants with cloches 7 litre water bottles with the bottom
cut out and held down by canes in
the middle and around the outside
are an inexpensive solution.
20. Develop a Japanese-style garden
using raked areas of gravel,
chippings or sand with artistically
placed rocks as the main features of
the garden rather than plants.
21. If totally demoralised, move to a
more sheltered situation!
Gardening should be a joy as well as a
challenge. Some challenges can eat up
retirement years rather than enhance
them!
I hope these ideas help you to develop
easily maintained and interesting gardens
in potentially hostile situations. Naturally,
what is possible will also be effected by the
depth of soil you have. If shallow, deepen
and enrich where you wish to plant up.
