INTRODUO
A adolescncia constitui uma fase de vida frequentemente caracterizada por mltiplas experincias
de relacionamento, onde as identidades sexuais e
de gnero emergem e se clarificam (Paul & White,
1990 cit. in Jackson, 1999). No entanto, por vezes,
esta fase igualmente marcada por dinmicas
sociais adversas, como o caso da violncia.
A definio do conceito de violncia tem sido
alvo de alguma controvrsia ao nvel da literatura,
assistindo-se emergncia de diferentes conceptualizaes que originam uma disparidade de dados
de prevalncia (Arriaga & Oskamp, 1999). A esta
falta de uniformizao na enunciao do conceito,
acrescem a variedade de instrumentos e/ou metodologias utilizadas na medio dos comportamentos
violentos, a ausncia de estudos longitudinais, as
diferenas verificadas ao nvel da amostragem

RESUMO
A investigao internacional na rea da violncia nas
relaes ntimas juvenis tem experimentado um crescimento
exponencial, sobretudo nas ltimas duas dcadas. Tambm
em Portugal comeam a surgir alguns estudos a este nvel.
Este artigo pretende constituir uma reviso da literatura
sobre o tema, em que se procura destacar os indicadores
de prevalncia deste tipo de abuso nos jovens, em termos
de vitimizao e perpetrao, dando especial enfoque
relao entre vitimizao, agresso e gnero. Simultaneamente, so alvo de anlise as crenas e atitudes subjacentes
a este tipo de violncia, os factores de risco para a sua
ocorrncia, assim como o impacto a curto, mdio e longo-prazo deste fenmeno na vida dos jovens. Este artigo
encerra com algumas recomendaes a atender em
investigaes futuras, de forma a prover uma compreenso
mais profunda sobre este fenmeno.

ABSTRACT
International research on dating violence relationships
has increased exponentially, especially in the last two
decades. Also in Portugal, some studies have been
conducted in this area. This article intends to present a
review of the current body of literature about this theme,
focused on the prevalence rates of this kind of abuse,
and with a special emphasis on the relationship between
victimization, aggression and gender. Simultaneously,
beliefs and attitudes about this form of violence are
analysed, as well as the risk factors to its occurrence,
and its impact of violence in life of the young persons
involved. This article concludes discussing some suggestions
for future research in order to achieve a better comprehension of this problem.
