Drug and alcohol effects in an organization

Introduction
Alcohol and Drug abuse at the workplace poses a great challenge to the growth and
development of the hospitality and tourism industry in Kenya. Presently, about 200 million
people or 5 per cent of the worlds population aged 15 to 64 use drugs. In Kenya it is
estimated that 5,835,007 of the youth population abuse drugs. common predictors of
adolescent drug, and alcohol. Alcohol and other drug use among adolescents has been a
public problem for decades. However, it seems that the problem is increasing more every
year. Although, some adolescents make it through these years with, on balance, more positive
experiences, but as the writer indicated more negative experiences of alcohol and drugs are on
the rise. Substance abuse can lead to serious problems such as poor schoolwork, loss of
friends, problems at home, and lasting legal problems. Alcohol and drug abuse is a leading
cause of teen death or injury related to car crashes, suicides, violence, and drowning.
Adolescences experience tragic consequences and others develop chronic problems of abuse
and dependence. In the absence of detailed government regulations on drinking at the
workplace, employers are left to create their own voluntary policies, which may vary
significantly in scope and effectiveness. While legislation intended to prohibit or control the
abuse of alcohol and drugs at the workplace is vital, preventive approaches should also be
intensified. Legislation and national policy with respect to the prevention, reduction and
management of alcohol and drug-related problems in the workplace should be determined
after consultation with the most representative employers' and workers' organizations and

other experts.

Causes of drug and substance abuse

Drug abuse is one of the major social problems in Kenya with common and easily
identifiable manifestations in public health. Half of drug abusers in Kenya are aged between
10-19 years with over 60% residing in urban areas and 21% in rural areas
The main root causes of drug and substance abuse in society include: poverty, corruption
and break down of traditional values. Among the effects of drug and substance abuse in
Kenya include: increase in crime levels including domestic violence, risky sexual behaviors
and practices including increased exposure to HIV/AIDS. In a nationwide survey conducted
by NACADA Authority in 2007, statistics indicated that lifetime prevalence rate for alcohol
was 39% and the prevalence rate then was 13% for people aged between 15 64 years.
Alcohol consumption and abuse is influenced by factors including gender, family history
and parental influence. Men are at a higher risk of heavy drinking and developing alcohol
use disorders. However, the number of women who drink, abuse, and become dependent on
alcohol is on the rise. Commonly abused drugs in Kenya were alcohol, bhang, glue, khat
(miraa) and psychotropic drugs. The prevalence of HIV/AIDS among injection drug users is
estimated at 68-88 percent. The UNODC report documents a relationship between injecting
drug use and HIV/AIDS. Nairobi and Coast provinces were most affected with an estimated
10,000 heroin users in Nairobi and 8,000 in Coast province. The Government of Kenya has
introduced a drug control component in its system for the performance appraisal of civil
servants, who are now required to carry out a drug control activity as one of their duties.

This measure is expected to contribute significantly to advocacy, training and drug abuse
prevention. A number of African countries have established or are in the process of
establishing integrated national Programmes to combat drug trafficking, drug abuse and
associated transnational organized crime. Employers have two important reasons for
wanting to establish alcohol and other drug-free workplace programs. First and foremost,
employers are concerned about the health, safety, and wellbeing of their employees. Second,
alcohol and other drug abuse costs businesses billions of shillings each year in increased
medical claims, medical disability costs, decreased productivity, injuries, theft, and
absenteeism.
Recommendation
There are many kinds of therapy that are used with teens to help them learn how to cope without
drugs and alcohol. Studies show that it is not as important what kind of program a teen attends,
but that they feel supported and safe while learning a new skill set. Family therapy is also helpful
for many teens who are trying to live without drugs and alcohol (Rowe, 2011). However, there
are systems that are in place to help the teens should be put in place to help them before getting
to the point of becoming alcohol and drug abusers. One may agree that family support, educating
the parents will help them understand what the children are going through.
Conclusion
There are so many things that adolescents have to deal with on a day to day journey. But as
parents it is imperative that the Word of God is instilled in them. Communication is very
important. And realize that each child is different. We can not as adults continue to see the youths
become victims of such destructive habits. Not only is it destroying them but also it can make the

human race become so weak. This is what we are, Although parents, schools, and the federal
government are trying to get children and teenagers to just say no to drugs, more than
$25billion worth of cigarette, alcohol, and prescription drug advertising is effectively working to
get them to just say yes to smoking, drinking, and other drugs
