Wassily Kandinsky

December 4, 1866 December 13, 1944

Wassily Kandisky was a Russian artist born in the 1800s to upper class partents.
Through his artwork he enjoyed engaging people with their sight, sound, and emotions. He
believed that nature would interrupt what he was trying to do. He used abstractions mainly in his
paintings and to express the inner necessity of the artist.
Kandinsky was famous for multiple pieces of artwork. When I look at his artwork I get
fascinated with all of the abstract colors that he used. One of my favorite pieces of his work is
Moscow 1 (Red Square) (1916) that he did for his former partner Munter. I really enjoyed all of
the colors that he used and how he visualized the city. His artwork is very unique compared to
any other artist. The color choices and the way he visualizes things are very unique. All of his
artwork seemed to symbolize something significant in his life. He expressed a lot of his emotions
through his paintings. When I saw his Moscow 1 it made me feel sad. Like I could feel his
emotions through the painting. It seemed as though he had a lot going on in this painting to
symbolize a lot of emotions he was feeling at the time. He had multiple pieces of artwork
however they all seem to generally have the same style as each other.
Kandinsky was born from parents from different ethnic backgrounds. His mother was
Lydia Ticheeva a musican, and his father was Silvestrovich Kandsinsky, a tea merchant. His
parents divorced when he was only 5 years old, and at that time he went to live with his aunt.
While living with her he learned to piano and cello in grammar school, as well as studying
drawing. Even when he was a young boy he enjoyed being an artist. He went and finished law

school and graduated with honors as his family wished. He married his cousin Anna Chimyakina
in 1892.
In 1896 he abruptly had a career change after he viewed the exhibition of French
Impressionist in Moscow the previous year. He chose to abandon his law career and move to
Moscow to pursue his life as an artist. He was accepted to a private painting school which led
him to his ultimate status as the father of abstract art.
Kandinsky frequently taught art classes and ended up moving in with one of his students
before his divorce from his wife was finalized. World War 1 took him back to Russia where he
was influenced by the Constructivist Movement. It was based on hard lines, dots, and geometry.
While Kandinsky was there he met a young lady named Nina Ardreevskaya, the daughter of a
General in the Russian Army. They had a son together that only lived to be 3 years old.
In the late 1930s Kandinsky moved to Paris in the suburbs with Nina. When the Germans
invaded France in 1940 he fled to the Pyrenees. He later returned to Neuilly where he lived a
very dark secluded depressed life because his paintings werent selling. He died from
cerebrovascular disease in Neuilly-sur-Seine France, on December 13,1944.
The New York auction has made well over 20 million dollars from his artwork. While he
believed that each time period had its own stamp on artistic expression; his interpretations and
color through musical and spiritual sensibilities altered artist landscape from the 20th century
going forward. He made a huge impression on the form of art and will be greatly remembered.
