USA Bowling National Championships Crowned First Titlists Matthew Gierl 300 at Farmingdale Lanes
INDIANAPOLIS The USA Bowling National
Championships determined its first champions at
Western Bowl in the youth team event featuring 12and-under and 15-and-under divisions.
The best three-of-five Baker matches in both divisions, which were taped for broadcast and will be televised on CBS Sports Network, would go four games.
In the U12 division, Coastal South regional winners
Team Georgia faced the Indiana U12 All-Stars, the
Lower Great Lakes regional winner. Team Georgia
would have just one open frame, and closed with four
consecutive strikes, to take Game 1, 199-166.
But the Indiana U12 All-Stars would post progressively higher scores in each following game, taking

Kyle Toyias started the string of strikes and teammates Hayden Smith,
Reece Dunbar and Shayla Gwynn followed his lead.
Throwing a good shot, that makes them want to throw an even better
shot, Kyle Toyia said. This is pretty awesome, Im not gonna lie.
The U15 title match saw another team from Georgia, the Atlanta-based
Strikers representing the South Region, facing Upper Great Lakes champion the Clams from Minnesota.
The Strikers would have just one open frame in the first two games,
posting victories of 217-149 and 239-205 to take a 2-0 lead. The Clams
then posted a clean game themselves for a 234-180 victory.
In Game 4, Faith Hardy watched a 4 pin tumble late in the fourth frame
that would help give her team a lead that Hardy and teammates Jhalen
Embery, Tyrell Ingalls and Dawson Stewart would not relinquish.
We knew (the Clams) were a good team and we just wanted to stay
clean and execute our fundamentals, coach Bill Johnson said about how
his team reacted after losing Game 3. They didnt panic. I doubt even if
they had lost two that they would have panicked. They would just stay
with their game. But being up 2-0, youre not really stressing when you
are executing your shots.
And the team members were there to pick up one another. Each team
member had strings of strikes and different points in the match.
It was a team effort, all of us did well, Stewart said. I was really
nervous, I was just trying not to choke. Being a national title, everybody
watching, the cameras all around us I just tried to not think about it
too much.
Starting last fall, USA Bowling conducted 16 regional events across the
country to determine the 32 teams 16 in U12, 16 in U15 that would
represent their regions at the national tournament.
After 15 games of qualifying, all teams in each division went through
a double-elimination match-play bracket to determine the teams that
would meet for the inaugural national titles. The Baker format is used for
all qualifying, with best two-of-three matches determining which teams
advanced in the bracket.

BOWLING CAMP CONCLUDES
The sixteenth annual Pro Image Bowling Camp
concluded with 37 happy people ready to go home
and practice, practice, practice. To keep the final
day fresh and add fun, a draft was held wherein
each coach chose team members. Each team then
bowled 3 Baker style games to try for the lowest
score. The lowest? That made it a competition of
skills, the objective being to pick off the 10 pin and
then the 7 pin in each frame, or at least come as
close as possible without putting a ball into the gutter. The surviving teams were in a championship
rolloff. (Noel) Vegas Chihuahuas (Roger Shell,
Jake Nappi, Brian Duke and Steven Salberg)
emerged victorious with a 70 score. They each
were awarded $50 off next years camp. Runnerups were the Sand Ants (Keith Luker, Anita Wilson,
Steven Douches, and David Grant) captained by
Tom Gentilella with a 117 score. They each have a
$25 discount for next years camp. The victors
named 14-year-old Nappi as their Most Valuable
Player.
Here are some random notes and observations:
Robert Glover, Secaucus, one of the two 63-yearold campers, started bowling when he retired as a
computer programmer. He wanted to get into something that would be motivational and inspirational.
Additionally, he was given a new bowling ball in a
drawing during the camp. Ive always done everything with intensity. I liked doing things this weekend
with the best teachers. My wife, Elizabeth also started bowling when I did and she put a deposit down for
next year.
By Sunday 14 campers signed up for 2017, which
leaves 28 spots. The coaches were already comparing
calendars to find a common weekend of availability.
While there was no time to poll all campers for their
vocations, among them was a cellist, a dermatologist
and a banker, and all 3 were repeat campers. This is
especially noteworthy for people outside of bowling
who still consider it a blue-collar sport.
Brian Erickson from Grantsburg, Wisconsin was
there in part because a camp he enrolled in closer to
home had been cancelled. He concluded that this was
worth the trip. I met nice people and got good information for my game, he said. They gave me personalized tips. Ill probably come back again next
year.
I never fully appreciated all the behind-the-scenes
people who support Ken Yokobosky in running these
camps until this year. I did some research and realized that, just like credits after a movie, there are
many people who contributed to the success of the 3
days. In addition to Ken Yokobosky and the entire
coaching team, there were:
