Be a Sattvika Karta

The Shastras say : efeeme Meges kece& It means that one should perform one's karma (duty)
to attain chittashuddhi (purity of mind).
Karma is classified as Sattvika, Rajasika, and Tamasika. Only the doer of the Sattvika
Karma i.e. the SattvikaKarta, is sure to attain ChittaShuddhi.
How should a SattvikaKarta be? He should not have any desire for the fruit of the karmas
and should not be haughty that he is the doer (of the karma). At the same time, he should
have the courage and the enthusiasm to perform it. Courage means the ability to complete
the karma without getting disheartened, whatever the obstacle. Enthusiasm is that
mental attitude which gives the doer determination to finish the task at any cost.
There is another important point. Whatever the result of the karma, one should not have
any like or dislike for it. That is, one should have the feeling that it is one's duty to perform
that karma and it has been done. Whatever fruit God assigns to it must be accepted.
Karma performed with such an attitude will not cause any bondage, but will create Chitta
Shuddhi and pave the way for jnana (knowledge). Therefore, everyone must strive to be a
SattvikaKarta.

ASTROLOGICAL WISDOM BY YAGNAVALKYA

The Essentials of Muhoortha 7
OTHER YOGAS

HERE ARE VARIOUS special yogas constituted by

permutations and combinations, the Vara, Nakshatra
and Tithi. This can generate too many groupings, good and
bad. We have the (1) Tithi-Vara Yogas are the combination
of those with Tithi and weekdays. (2) Vara-Tara-Yogas
with the combination of weekdays and nakshatras. (3)
Tithi-Vara-Tara Yogas are those with the combinations
of all the three.
Let us try to examine these one by one. The combination
of specific Tithi on a specific weekday is called the
Tithi-Vara Yoga. As explained earlier, under the topic
of Tithi, Dwadasi on a Sunday, Ekadasi on Monday,
Dasami on Tuesday, Navami on Wednesday, Ashtami
on Thursday, Saptami on Friday and Shasti on Saturday
create Krakachadosha. This can be spotted out easily.
It will be present when the sum of the Tithi and the
weekday add up to 13. It must be remembered that we
have to reckon the weekday by its name, only from one
sunrise to the next. Krakachadosha yoga is generally not
recommended for auspicious events. Tithis Trayodasi,
Chaturdasi, Pournami, Amavasya and Prathama to
Panchami cannot create this Dosha. Krakacha means a
VDZDQGVRLWLVFDSDEOHRIFXWWLQJWKHEHQHFLDOHIIHFWV
of the time selected.
There are divergent views in the constitution of some of
the Tithi-Vara Yogas according to different authorities. We
VKDOOFRQQHRQO\WRWKRVHPRVWO\DFFHSWHGMadhaveeya
lists the following as Adhamayogas that are inauspicious
caused by the combinations of Tithi and Vara.
Sunday with Chaturthi, Shasti, Saptami or Dwadasi.
(4/6/7/12)
Monday with Shasti, Saptami or Ekadasi. (6/7/11)

Tuesday with Panchami, Saptami, Ashtami or

Dasami. (5/7/8/10)
Wednesday with Prathama, Dwiteeya, Ashtami or
Navami. (1/2/8/9)
Thursday with Shasti, Ashtami, Navami or Dwadasi.
(6/8/9/12)
Friday with Dwiteeya, Triteeya, Ashtami, Navami,
Dasami or Ekadasi. (2/3/8/9/10)
Saturday with Saptami, Navami, Ekadasi or
Trayodasi. (7/9/11/13)
However, some authorities take a select group of the above
and term them as Visha or poisonous Yogas as follows.
Sunday with Chaturthi; Monday-Shasti; TuesdaySaptami; Wednesday-Dwiteeya; Thursday-Ashtami;
Friday-Navami and Saturday-Saptami. Muhurtha
Chintamani qualifies Wednesdays Prathama and
Sundays Saptami as Samvartaka. Also, select groups
from some of these go under different nomenclatures like
Dagdha and Hutashana. Opinions differ with regard to
Amirtha and Mrithyu.
Siddhayoga, (Tithi-Vara) which is auspicious is formed
on Tuesday with Jaya Tithis (3/8/13), Wednesday with
Bhadra (2/7/12), Thursday with Poorna (5/10/15), Friday
with Nanda (1/6/11), Saturday with Rikta (4/9/14). Sunday
and Monday are out of this list. Here a contradiction could
be noticed. Wednesday with Dwiteeya is Visha,PDOHF
and simultaneously Siddha WKDW LV EHQHF +RZHYHU

would prevail. Bhadra Tithis on Mondays and Fridays,
Jaya on Wednesdays, Poorna on Thursdays and Rikta on
Saturdays produce auspicious Varayogas.
Coming to Vara Tara Yogas or combination of weekdays
with Nakshatras, Madhaveeya holds the following as
inauspicious. Sunday - Makha, Bharani, Dhanishta,

Aridra, Visaka, Jyeshta, Revati and Poorvashada;
Wednesday - Dhanishta, Moola, Bharani, Aswini,

Mrigasira and Aridra; Friday - Swati, Rohini, Bharani,
Visaka, Chitra, Dhanishta, Pushyami, Aslesha and Makha;
Saturday with Hasta, Pushyami, Uttaraphalguni,
Punarvasu, Chitra, Poorvashada, Uttarashada, Sravana
and Revati.
Two selected combinations, culled out from the above list,
go under the names of Utpaada and Mrityu yogas with a
variant for Tuesdays enlisting Dhanishta and Satabhisha
instead. Likewise another goes under the name of Dagdha
yoga, which is better known as Prabalarishtayoga in
Tamilnadu, yet another under the name of Yamaganda
Yoga. In the Amritadiyoga scheme followed, in Tamilnadu,
under Vara-Tara Yogas, slight variations are seen in the
reckoning of the Amrita, Siddha and Marana yogas.
There are some good combinations also in Vara Tara
Yogas. The following Amritayoga combinations are
auspicious. Sunday- Pushyami, Moola, Hasta; MondayChitra, Sravana, Mrigasira; Tuesday - Aswini, Rohini,
Uttarabhadrapada, Uttarashada, Uttaraphalguni;
Wednesday with Uttarashada Krittika Anuradha;
Thursday- Punarvasu, Poorvashada, Revati; Friday
Uttaraphalguni, Satabhisha, Swati; Saturday - Dhanishta
Swati and Rohini.
In this scheme, the following Tithis also must be included
in the list from Wednesday, to make the rest of the
combinations in the group to qualify for Amritayoga,
making them Tithi-Vara-Tara Yogas. They are Panchami
and Saptami on Wednesday; Trayodasi on Thursday;
Prathama, Shasti and Ekadasi on Friday and Dwadasi,
Saptami and Dwadasi on Saturday.
According to another school, the list varies.
Vara Tara combinations for Sarvaartha Siddhi Yogas
are: Sunday- Uttaraphalguni, Uttarashada, Aslesha,
Hasta, Moola, Uttarabhadrapada and Pushyami;
Monday - Sravana, Rohini, Mrigasira, Pushyami and
Anuradha; Tuesday - Aswini, Krittika, Aslesha and
Uttarabhadrapada; Wednesday - Rohini, Anuradha,
Hasta, Krittika and Mrigasira; Thursday - Revati,
Anuradha, Aswini, Punarvasu and Pushyami; Friday
- Revati, Anuradha, Aswini, Punarvasu and Sravana;
Saturday - Sravana, Rohini and Swati.

Nakshatras underlined constitute Amrita Siddhi yoga,

which is considered slightly superior to Sarvaartha Siddhi
Yogas.
There are some forbidden combinations of Tithi and Tara
(Nakshatra and Lunar days). They are called Rikshalungi.
They are: Prathama with Poorvaashaada; Panchami
with Krittika; Ashtami with Poorvabhadrapada; Dasami
with Rohini; Dwadasi with Aslesha and Trayodasi with
Uttaraphalguni.
The following Tithi - Tara combinations are also
forbidden. Dwiteeya - Anuradha; Triteeya - three
Uttaras; Panchami - Makha; Saptami - Hasta, Moola;
Ashtami - Rohini and Trayodasi - Chitra, Swati.
Dwipushkarayoga and Tripushkarayoga
There are two important combinations of Tithi-VaraNakshatra, namely Pushkarayoga and Varayoga. The
occurrence of Dwipushkarayoga and Tripushkarayoga are
indicated in some of the Panchangas. Both of them are
formed only on Sundays, Tuesdays and Saturdays when
the Tithis Dwiteeya, Saptami or Dwadasi also join them.
Dwipushkarayoga is formed on such special days when
the Nakshatras Mrigasira, Chitra or Dhanishta occur.
Tripushkarayoga is formed when Visaka, Uttaraphalguni,
Poorvabhadrapada, Punarvasu, Krittika or Uttarashada
prevail on these Tithi-Vara combines.
The specialty of these two Yogas is that any good or
bad event taking place on Dwipushkara timings has a
tendency to repeat itself further on two occasions and the
happenings on Tripushkara timings, three times, within a
reasonable time. Unless one is not too sure of blessing an
event with remarks, many happy returns of the day these
times are to be avoided for any other occasions. It must
be noted that these Yogas are formed on Bhadra Tithis
(2-7-12) only. Further, the Nakshatras involved in causing
Tripushkarayoga are the Tripaada ones, those of the Sun
and Jupiter, having their three quarters in one sign and the
other quarter in another. Likewise, the Dwipaada or Ardha
Nakshatras of Mars, having their two quarters in one sign
and two quarters in another create the Dwipushkarayoga.
Varayoga

DQGVSHFLF1DNVKDWUDVNanda Tithis on Sundays with
Chitra, Krittika, Aridra, Satabhisha and on Tuesdays with

Apart from these there are combinations of TithiNakshatra or Nakshatra and lunar day and Tithi Rasi
or Rasi and lunar day. There is another set of 28 yogas
called Aanandaadi. This is reckoned by the combination
of the nakshatra and the weekday wherein Abhijith is
also taken for the count. Mainly used for journeys, it is

days from Aananda onwards based on the weekday and
nakshatra in the following pattern.
Sunday + Aswini; Monday + Mrigasira; Tuesday +
Aslesha; Wednesday + Hasta; Thursday + Anuradha;
Friday + Uttarashada and Saturday + Satabhisha, all in
that order.
For example in case of Wednesday, we have to start the
count from Hasta, i.e., Wednesday + Hasta will give
Aanandayoga and Wednesday with Chitra will give
Kaaldandayoga.
One must remember that there are many exceptions
for most of these rules and they are equally important.
Therefore, one must not jump to any hasty decision to
reject or accept any of these Yogas without a discerning

have an aesthetic value. In a way, they even add
lustre to the personality of the wearer. Much more
fascinating, however, is the irresistible lure they hold
as a kind of talisman. This is because of the notion very

be manipulated to advantage with the use of appropriate
gemstones. Occult practitioners prescribe gems which

the maladies and misfortunes diagnosed astro-logically
and its prescription as to the kind, weight and more of

It is seen that Gem Astrology is evolved around two
notions as the base. One is that gemstones have the inherent
SRWHQWLDOWRLQWHUIHUHZLWKFRVPLFLQXHQFHV7KHRWKHULV
that planetary forces control man and direct his activities.
If we are to go by the purists of astrological discipline,
both these premises are suspect. Fundamental tenets of
astrology do not support this view nor does it seem to stem

gems work as talisman is, deep-rooted while instances of
its miraculous results are cited as proof of the pudding by
the practitioners. The issue warrants investigative study
and the truth be vindicated lest astrology as a discipline
be open to be branded as a fraud.

Source of astrological knowledge is the discovery by

the wise sages of yore of the existence of a traceable
relationship between man and cosmos. This knowledge
being beyond ken of senses was actually realised by the
sages through transcendental perception. Whereas men
of science can study only what is perceivable through
senses and hence knowledge of astrology is clearly

findings of ancient sages as recorded in their works

happens to be the only authority to which we can look to in
regard to matters pertaining to astrological truths. Doctrine
of. Karma, the theme on which the later astrological
discipline is evolved, clearly lays down that the present
life is not an isolated chance occurrence but a continuity
from the past leading to a future life; that happenings in
present life are the results of actions in the past life and the
continuity between action and its end is traceable through
time, cutting through the barrier between past and present
life; that every action has to terminate in result, and the
result would be commensurate with the kind of action.
Since the action is already performed and as there is no
means of withdrawing or reaching the force released by the
action, the result is irrevocable and therefore Karmaphala
or Destiny is deterministic.
The logical implication of the tenets of astrology is that
the notion that planets control man is a myth. In truth it is
a myth, but in the same sense that the Sun rises in the east
is a myth. The truth about rotation of the Earth can only
be perceived intellectually and not through direct senses.
Hence the make-believe notion that the Sun rises and sets
which is only indicative of the actual phenomenon of the
Earth's rotation. Much the same way, the results of past
karma manifests in the form of series of changes in man
and his environment. Shifting motions of the heavenly
bodies serve as reliable indicators of the kind of changes
LQWKHRIQJRIWKHOLIHRIPDQ7KHZLVGRPDQGH[SHULHQFH
gained from studies and observations over long periods
by wisemen has percolated, into a system to interpret
the changes in life from a study of changing heavens.
Hence astrological conclusions could only be indicative
as it is based on a study of planetary positions which
themselves are indicative and not causative. In astrological
parlance, Destiny is irrevocable and deterministic whereas
astrological predictions are indi cative and planets are
indicators, while it is past action (Karma) that is causative.
It has been a short step from the belief that planets are
reliable indicators of happenings in the life of man to

the notion that these heavenly bodies control man and

therefore need to be propitiated in order to prosper. This
is a notion fathered by the priest-astronomers of yore who
were the custodians of the secret knowledge, to ensure that
WKHLULQXHQFHZRXOGEHEHQLJQ7KLVLVUHHFWHGEYWKH
fact that authoritative texts on astrology make no reference
to the subject of propitiating planets. Even the description
of the form (swaroopa) of planets in these works are mere
embodiments of the nature (guna) attributed to these
planets and there is no attempt at deifying them as objects
of worship Whereas it is religious works like Vishnu
Purana. Garuda Parana and other Puranas that copious
references are made to planetary worship. Instructions
with regard to performance of poojas, havanas, etc., are
contained mostly in these religious works which are aimed
to appease planets and invoke their favour. Moreover
we cannot overlook that one of the pre-requisites of
astrological rule is that it should be valid for all time and
should have universal application. Whereas the remedial
measures advocated have religious base and therefore their
applicability cease to be universal.
Prescription of performance of Swayamvara Parvati Pooja
to precipitate marriage or Vishnu Sahasranama recitation
to beget issue to a Muslim or a Wesetrner would be
irrelevant. On the other hand the horoscope of a native of
any religion, nationality or period is subjected to the same
treatment for purposes of delineation. Thus there is enough
evidence to establish that the remedial measures such
as mantra (pooja, etc), moola (herbs) and mani (gems),
prescribed as astrological, are in truth religion-based and
have no sanction of astrology. It so happens that astrology
has remained part of the warp and web of Hindu social
fabric for so long that it would be unrewarding to attempt
to segragate the astrological threads from that of religion
and social customs. However, these directives although
being religion-based become meaningful when we view
them in their proper perspective.
The ultimate purpose of directives with regard to Hindu
Way of Life was to ensure a well-knit healthy society that
would offer congenial environment to self-development
and generate inner power by the individual so that he
can progress towards spiritual evolution. Accordingly
prescription of remedial measures to the suffering served
as crutches to the invalid sou! and helped it recoup and
attain strength. Since faith was an essential factor in this
matter, religious-base suited the purpose better than that
of reason and logic that happen to be the mainstay of
astrology. Rites and rituals of religion cannot, therefore,
be subject of reasoning and analysis; for those who believe
in them, no explanation would be necessary ; for those

say that these remedial measures are aimed at providinginner strength to man to cope with results of destiny and

crystals and stone formulations are sensitive to cosmic
rays and therefore are effective in restoring biological
rhythms within the body by their use. Certain crystals
are sensitive to radio waves is a well-established fact
that they are used in transmission receiver gadgets. With
regard to human body, it is observed that an organism to
survive, even for a while, must not only synchronize its
rhythms; it must co-ordinate them with the outer world.
Here we see two basic elements at work. One is the
biological clock which regulates processes within the
organism; the second is the synchronizer or timer which
links the processess to a point in the biological clock's
daily cycle. The timer or synchronizer is an external

sages. Biological rhythms ebb and surge throughout the
body. Sleep-wake cycle controlled by the brain is the most
familiar biological rhythm in man. Many of the rhythms
like body temperature, oxygen consumption, heart beats,
adrenal gland secretion, kidney excretion, blood count,
cell division and reproduction cycle are so pronounced
that time could almost be measured by them. Whenever
any of these biological rhythms go out of beat, normal
functioning of the body and mind gets affected. Medical
treatment is a mechanical means of restoring the beat to
its original rhythm. Among other means of restoring this
rhythm, gems are cited as one. In the same way a lens can
focus the rays of the Sun on to a point, gemstones also

practical utility. At best it is comparable to a prescription
of aspirin. Consequently, even indiscriminate application
of gem therapy would go unnoticed and blessedly cause

scheme. To begin with, astrology is an investigative
discipline and not a curative one. The notion that gems

can be used to effectively manipulate the working of

destiny to one's advantage is unfounded and the concept
itself is alien to basic doctrine of astrology. Gem therapy
being curative in character does not fall within the scope
of astrological discipline and like ther therapies such as
acupuncture this also would be safer and more effective
in the hands of medical men acquainted with astrological
diagnosis.

Gem-astrologers did not appear to have any authoritative

guideline for purposes of prescription of gems. When a
planet is weak, the gem is prescribed as a protection and
in respect of a horoscope wherein a planet is well placed,
it is said to augment its results. Rahu and Mars are the

as an insurance is the opinion expressed by some of the
gem-astrologers.

Directing our study to the actual users of gems, it is

observed that the fascination for wearing gems mounted
on rings is more evident in Eastern part of the country than
in other areas. Coral (pravala) easily outnumbers any other
gem with gomedha closely following with Cat's eye and
moonstone lagging far behind. It is intriguing that other
gems are rarely used although they represent powerful
planets like Jupiter, Saturn, Venus, the Sun and Mercury.
The only plausible explanation could be that these gems
are comparatively more expensive and a few may afford
them even if they were to be prescribed. When questioned

astrologer they consulted prescribed it and they invested
in gems as an insurance against risk, and have no regrets.

It is to to the credit of some leading dealers in precious

and semi-precious stones that they have taken initiative to
project the image of astrology by sponsoring astrological
consultations and organising seminars periodically and
have contributed in a big way in awakening interest
in astrology and aiding the profession of astrology to
a considerable extent. Perhaps this could account, in a

Gem Astrology. Since customer gets his money's worth
of precious stone and even an improper application is
practically harmless to the user, the highbrows among
men of astrological discipline need not get worked up
even though the practice is against canons of astrology
in its strict sense. (FOR)

American History in 1779
Saturn and Mars transit in Scorpio has an important
impact on American history. In the year 1779, Mars and
Saturn were retrograde in the sign of Scorpio. Apparently
Jupiter was also in retrograde motion in Leo. Mars turned
retrograde on 7th April 1779.
This peculiar transit is quite similar to that occurring
now in the year 2016 when all the major planets will
be retrograde (Saturn, Mars and Jupiter). There may be
changes in American leadership and a prolonged political
cold war.
As Saturn-Mars transit the sign of Scorpio, Sun will
oppose them from the sign of Taurus. The exact opposition
will occur on 3rd June 2016. Sun will be in the constellation

HE FORTHCOMING YEAR Durmukhi throws up

lots of interesting possibilities with the thoughts of
a sinister Mars-Saturn conjunction looming large over
the world. Two sinister conjunctions viz., Mars-Saturn
and Jupiter-Rahu vitiate the cosmic landscape adding to
the woes of a troubled world which is looking for succor,
economically, socially and politically. What does the
Hindu year Durmukhi, hold for the world? This we will
try to unravel in the course of this article.
There are three methods by which prospects for the
forthcoming year can be forecast. They are as follows:
1.

Forecasts based on Lunar year

2.

Forecasts based on Solar Year and

3.

Inclusive methodology

The Tamil astrological classic Varshadi Nool gives a few

broad hints about Durmukhi Year. Agricultural activities
will be prosperous and a good harvest can be expected.
Considering this factor, this is an ideal year for investment
in agriculture and agricultural related activities. The second
half of the Durmukhi year viz., November 16 to March17
will yield copious rains.Products which are white in colour
could become scarce. To give a couple of examples, Salt
and Cotton, which are white in colour, could become
scarce.
The Navanayagar theory is one which gives clues on
how the year could be for the masses. The king of the
year is Venus. As the lunar year commences on April
7, 2016 at 16.54 IST which is a Thursday, the Pratipada

Mars is the lord of clouds (Megadipathi) as well as lord

be destruction all-round on account of natural calamities.
Besides this there will be aparadoxical situation wherein

Now we will take a close look at Indias independence
chart. The present dasa is that of Moon who is the lord of
third house place in own house in Cancer. It is in close
conjunction with Mercury and forms a square with 11thlord
Jupiter.
Growth in media, transport, telecommunication and IT
enabled services will be supported by Dasa lord Moon.
India will move into a new era of bullet trains and lots of
existing trains will get converted into High-speed trains.
The quality of services available inside the trains will
show considerable improvement. High speed internet will

be laid all over the country. All government initiatives
will be brought to the notice of the public through emails
and TV channels.
The Indian space programme will receive a major boost.
India is on the verge of becoming a world leader in space
technology. Further in this period, foundation will be laid
for manufacture of passenger aircraft. Empowerment
of women through reservation will be implemented as
dasa lord Moon occupies a feminine sign Cancer in the
company of another feminine planet, Venus.
In this connection, mention needs to be made about the
swearing in ceremony chart of Sri Narendra Modi. Modiji
became the Prime Minister of India on 26th May 2014 at
18.10 pm. The odd features of this chart are as follows:Usually Bharani nakshatra is never preferred for

thesedoshas are alleviated by the aspect of Jupiter on the
ascendant and presence of the yogakaraka Saturn in the
ascendant. Mercury in the 9th is also a strong point of the
chart. The presence of Mercury and Jupiter in the 3rd from
Moon aspecting the 3rd from lagna has already given a
very strong impetus to Indias foreign policy. The subperiod of Sunin the mahadasha of Venus will operate from
6th April 2016 to 1st April 2017 in the swearing-in chart.
As Sun is in the 8th, there is a dire necessity to exercise
caution in all security-related matters. Having said that the
possibility of a national mourning cannot be ruled out in
this period as Sun occupies the 8th in the coronation chart
and its sub-period operates during the Durmukhi year. The

good governance to the nation. As the lord of 2nd occupies
the 12th, a daridra yoga is given rise to. The 11th lord in
the 8th is also a curse. Consequently, the Union Budgets
will introduce more and more taxes creating frustration
and disappointment in the minds of the public. According
to Chanakya, the king ought not to collect more than onefourth of income by way of taxes. In the case of the present
government, the taxes levied will be disproportionately
high and the public especially the salaried class will be put
to considerable hardship. The lunar year chart also shows
the conjunction of Sun (12th lord) with Moon (11th lord)
and Venus (2nd lord). This means that the prosperity of
the nation will be seriously challenged by an oppressive
taxation regime. Simplification of direct taxes and
introduction of a friendly tax payer regime will remain
more of rhetoric and in practice, the canons of taxation
will be shylock-like.
In the solar year chart, the 5th lord Saturn joins the 2nd lord
Mars and at the navamsa level, these planets happen to
occupy their own houses. In the lunar year chart the 5th
lord Saturn joins the 3rd lord Mars and occupies the 3rd.
A combined reading of these two charts shows that the
sensex, which is indicative of the mood of the stock market,
will have a bullish undertone throughout Durmukhi year.
By the time Durmukhi year comes to an end, the sensex
will be in the range of 28,000-30,000. The nifty will also
show healthy growth. Stocks of banking companies would
get affected as Jupiter is in conjunction with Rahu in the
12th house. The banks would be forced to declare their real
NPA levels in their balance sheet. However, once Jupiter
enters Virgo, banking sector will gain added momentum
and prices of bank shares will show an upward growth. As
the 3rd lord occupies the 3rd, shares of telecommunication,
aviation and software companies will show strong growth.
Venus as lord of 2nd and9th is exalted in the 7th. Stocks of

Coming to the commodities market, let us analyze how
the gold prices would behave in the Durmukhi year. In the
lunar year chart there is mutual interchange between Sun
(12th lord) and Jupiter (7th lord). Both Sun and Jupiter are

gets over.
The interpretation of mundane events from the lunar year
chart complements the same when it is read with reference
to the solar chart. In some parts of India such as Karnataka
and Andhra Pradesh, precedence is given to the Moon
whereas in states likeTamilnadu and Kerala, it is the Sun
which is primary to reading of panchangas. A third method
is what is known as inclusive methodology. This method
can be better understood by reading the book, A Nations
Prophecyby Dr. Ravi Rao, wherein he explains in detail
how this system works. I will now explain the principles
underlying the Inclusive Method in brief. For every
country there is an ascendant, which is deduced either
from its Independence chart or the Republic chart. If the
transits on a particular day are read having that ascendant
as the basis, we can forecast what is going to happento a
nation using that chart for that particular year. For India,
Taurus is the ascendant in the IndependenceDaychart,
while Pisces rises on Republic day. If you draw a chart,
map out all the planets and take the ascendant as Pisces or
Taurus for instance, you can infer what is going to happen
to India, during the year. Likewise, for all nations you can

necessary to take all precautions to ensure that people at

our sportsmen. This will be an exceptionally good year

quadrants exposes the country to both man-made and

The 27th degree of Leo rises in Kabul, Afghanistan. Here
again violence and unrest of an ethnic nature threaten the
solidarity of the country. The course of Durmukhi could
take this nation into a state of lawlessness.Afghanistans
rising sign is usually taken as Aries and this conjunction
takes place in the 8th house. A major earthquake will hit
Afghanistan. It will be the country which could greatly
get affected by the Mars-Saturn conjunction. A change of
government appears likely.
United States of America
The 10th degree of Aries rises in Washington DC. As
the lord of 10th moves into the 8th forming a conjunction
with the 8th lord, there is a compelling need to reinforce
security for the people at the helm of the affairs. Jupiter
is a planet of purity, wisdom, spirituality and knowledge
whereas Rahu denotes impurity, naivety, materiality and
illusions; by its very nature Rahu is opposed to Jupiter.
No wonder, this conjunction is termed as Guru Chandala

There is an interesting 3 planet conjunction in the
7th in Indias lunar chart. These three planets are Sun
(as 12th lord), Moon as 11th lord and Venus as 2nd lord.
This conjunction would facilitate heavy investments into
rail and roads, thereby promoting greater connectivity
to remote places. Foreign investments would also come
into India in a big way. Measures would be taken to bring
money stashed in tax havens and Swiss Banks into India.
Some kind of an amnesty scheme would be introduced
which will enable black money holders to bring their funds

The Dreaded Mars-Saturn Conjunction in August 2016

(continued from 11)

The second drekkana of Scorpio is ruled byJupiter. Thus

watery element becomes more prominent during this
period. This calls for caution against disasters pertaining
to watery areas such as beaches, oceans, deep-sea
earthquakes and a tendency for Tsunami. Incidencessuch
as drowning of cruise, inferno, damage to the ports are also
indicated. Sea military exercise is also expected.
The second drekkana of Scorpio is explained by Brihat
Jataka as The second drekkana of Scorpio represents
a woman fond of home and happiness for her husbands
sake and covered with serpents with a body resembling
DWRUWRLVHDQGDSRW. A differentexplanation for the 2nd
drekkana is indicative of a dominant woman leadership
in the changing political landscape.

the Sun is in the constellation of Rohini depicting the

in South America, Mexico, Cuba, Chile, Brazil, parts of

North Africa, Egypt and Middle East countries, could be.
In India Gujarat, Madya Pradesh, Bhopal and Kerala are
likely to be affected.
Conclusion
Saturn-Mars conjunction is a normal phenomenon.
However Saturn-Mars-Jupiter in retrogression is a rare
phenomenon. When such a combination occurred last on
7th April 1779 in the constellation of Anuradha, Jupiter
was in Leo in the constellation of Uttara. This year the
phenomena will take place when Mars retrogrades from
17th April 2016. Mars will be in Anuradha 4 and Saturn in
Jyestha 2nd with Jupiter in Pubba 2nd. This rare planetary
position can cause considerable world chaos.

Let me pause here for a moment to say that the cloud of
aversion against astrology on the part of self-imposed
rationalists and pseudo-scientists of modern times is being
wiped off; thanks to the efforts of our 'Thrylokyadeepa' the
great DR. B. V. RAMAN. Astrology is being recognised as
a science because of his infallible astrological predictions
having been corroborated by the modern scientific
researches. I am also equally proud of the success of
our Indian Scientists 'who have won over the sending of
satellite 'Rohini'. True, it is the success of modern science.
But we cannot forget their failure also in the prior attempts
to send satellite 'Bhaskara'. It was the result of mistakes in
calculation and of mechanical defects. Still the science is
not deprecated or depreciated by anybody. The principles
hold good and it remains as a science. The same is the case
18 APRIL 2016

with Astrology. Because of the mistakes committed by an

astrologer in calculating and consequently his prediction
fails, that cannot be attributed to the wrong conclusion
that astrology is not a science.
I would like to proclaim that astrology is more a science
than any of the sciences and I will hold aloft the battle
against those who sneez at astrology. I want scholars
in astrology to hold aloft the same. Our Rishis with
their naked but powerful eyes had long long before,
even before the Christ, found out the natural attractions
between planets, especially the attraction by the Sun

require a Newton to give the law of attraction for Rig Veda

Before going into the Prasana Marga which is unique
in the delineation of 'Prasna' let us examine the earlier
contributions of Kerala to this science of astrology.
Of the two Aryabhatas, the earlier Aryabhata I who is
said to have lived in A.D. 499 and who is the author of

and (6) Yukthibhasha. It is really wonderful to know that
Tantrasangraham ZDV ZULWWHQ ZLWKLQ YH GD\V LQ$'
1502 by Neelakanta. There is evidence to prove that this
Neelakanta was none other than Kelannoor Neelakanta
Somayaji. The said author was a commentator of
Aryabhateeyam and in that commentary he has stated
that he is the disciple of Damodara, son of Parameswara,
who found out the calculation of Drigganitham. In

suggestion that for the study of Trigonometry in College

classes, this Tantrasangraham may be prescribed as a text,

as that is a better work than any of the present prescribed
texts. At about this period of Tantrasangraham there was
another work Sadrathnamala by Sankara Varman. Even
according to great scholars, this work is considered to be
a celebrated one. In Vol. Ill of "Transactions of the Royal
Asiatic Society of Great Britian and Irland" the author says
that there are innumerable inventions in Sadrathnamala
which could not be even dream of by the contemporaries
of other countries. Wisely said by Colbrooke, in praise of
Keralite astrology, that Kerala is the cradle of astrology.
Ganakasuchika of the Govindabbatta of Kerala is another
remarkable authority. In the High School classes we
were taught about the application of the Greek letter
'pi' equivalent to 22/7 for finding out the radius or
circumference of a circle. That this principle was not Greek
and Latin to our astrologers of the past is proved from our
Karanapaddhathi which is also a valuable contribution of
Kerala to the cause of astrology.
We cannot forget the yeoman service rendered by
'Vararuchi' the celebrated scholar responsible for what
we call in Kerala 'Paralperu and Vakyam and Jyavu'. That
is worth commending because of the easiest possible
method of calculation the world has ever seen. I have
already invited your attention to 'Drigganitha Paddhathi'.
At this point we are reminded of the prior mode of
calculation known as 'Parahttham'. Digganitham was
only an improvement on 'Parahitham'. In spite of that, the
accuracy of calculation in Drigganitham, was disputed
and sometime back in 1939 Puliyoor Purushothaman
Namboodiri published a work called Ganitha Nirn'ayam
in which he has invented a method for calculation, another
improvement on 'Drigganitham'. It is germane to mention
here that even that cannot claim to be perfect and that
late Areekulangara Narayana Panikker, after strenuous
experiments had found out a more accurate mode of
calculation. Unfortunately for us, that work has not seen
the light of the day, for that great scholar passed away
before completion of the work for sending it to press. It
may be news to you that there is a beautiful commentary
Sarabodhini for Leelavathi of Bhaskaracharya by the
said scholar in his inimitable expression. I feel proud to
say that it was during the per iod when I was studying as
his disciple and it was because of my pressure that the
work was completed and I took the initiative in editing
the work which was published by me in the periodical
Jyothishamasika in the year 1949-50.
In the contribution of Kerala to the science of Astrology
in its practice and prediction, the community of Panikers

THE ASTROLOGICAL eMAGAZINE

from which I hail, has got an inseparable role, so that the

name Paniker' has become a synonym for an astrologer. In
Kerala, whenever one requires astrological consultation,
people say that a Paniker 'may be brought, meaning
thereby an astrologer. The legend is that this community
was once a sect of Kerala Brahmins which later became
outcaste. And that is how we have lost the topmost
status of Brahmin in the hierarchy of castes; but still the
Brahmanyam is kept alive and followed by us by the
practice of astrology. Still, where astrologers of different
castes assemble for a 'Devaprasna', the right to perform
the preliminaries and to commence the 'prasna' is in the
Paniker.
For the practice of astrology in Kerala, the foundation is
laid by the study of Sanskrit and it is only after attaining
a good command of the language, the astrological texts
are taught. Of course, primary lessons in 'ganitham' are
taught from early childhood and the commencement
of what is called 'Kavidiyidal'. And it is only after one
becomes well versed in the calculations of the planetary
positions, the texts for prediction are taught. Finding out
the planetary positions or 'graha-ganitham' is of a peculiar
type in Kerala. From time immemorial it is done by
using shells called 'Kavidi' in Malayalam or 'Varatika'
in Sanskrit. This method of calculation is blessed with
certain advantages. It does not require any paper, pen or
SHQFLO$Q\OHQJWK\JXUHFRQWDLQLQJWHQRUPRUHGLJLWV
can be easily added, subtracted, multiplied, divided, etc.,
etc., within the least time required. It is a noteworthy
phenomenon that for a Keralite astrologer 'Kavjdisarchi'
a small cloth bag containing not less than 321 shells is

be the length of that. An astrologer having poetic talents
can show magic in calculation. I know my grandfather
the great Kokkozhikode Koru Paniker used to prepare
horoscopes of single slokas, putting the whole 'grahasthiti',
date and time of birth, balance of Dasa, etc., in one
Sanskrit sloka. You may be aware that the last word
'Ayurarogyasoukhyam' in the Narayaneeya of Melpathur
Bhattapada is the Kaiidina (or number of days passed in
the Kaliyuga) on which the work was completed. There
is a story about the two intellectual giants Punnasseri
Nambi and Kaikulangara Rama Warier. Kaikulangara once
visited Punnesseri when he found that some students were
learning ganitham by using the 'Kavidi'. Kaikulangara

These two Acharyas were contemporaries and both were

equally famous for their profundity of knowledge in
Sanskrit, Astrology, Ayurveda and Other sastras and were
dedicated to the inexorable loyalty to the propagation of the
same, really following Adhithibodhacharanapracharanihi;
Dashaschathasthraprapranayanmpadkibhihi as characterised
in Naishadheeya Mahakavya. Both of them were great
commentators. Punnesseri was walking Encyclopedia.
Almost all the later famous scholars of Malabar were
his disciples. His famous commentary Uparathnasikha
in Malayalam for Prasnamargam is more popular
and valued than the text itself in Kerala, though his
Sanskrit commentary could not attract much popularity.
Kaikulangara Rama Warier is a name no astrologer can
forget. He was really a 'Savyasachi' in all respects in
the true meaning of that word. Not a single sastra or
Sanskrit kavya remains for which there is no commentary
by Kaikulangara. His commentary for Varahamihira's
Horasastra is a monument for his scholarship, versatility
and sharp critical analysis of the subject leading the
astrologer to arrive at the truth. No commentary is so
exhaustive than this where all other Horas of Garga, Maya,
Parasara, Yavana, etc., are profusely quoted and criticized.
He ends his Hora Sastra Commentary with this :

Now, Hora is free from sorrow. We are happy.

Sorrow is only for the Acharya who has gone to
Heaven without seeing me). When you go deep into
his commentary, you will also join with this view
and you will not take it as stemmed out of sheer
audacity or impudence.
For Varahamihira Hora there is the celebrated Sanskrit
commentary Dasadhyayee by the eminent Govinda
Somayaji. True, the commentary is only for ten chapters,
but that serves the purpose for the whole text itself. That
is the beauty of that. It is really an outstanding work
enriched in original thoughts untrammelled by anybody
else and astonishingly illuminating even to the modern
science. That is why it is said that to make an attempt of
prediction without studying Dasadhyayee is imagining to
cross an ocean without a boat.

There are still more innumerable works from Kerala

on various astrological aspects. Authors like Haridatha,
Mangalesseri, etc., etc., and works like Venuaroham,
Karnotharam, Uparagakriyakramam, ilbrasarochayam,
Laghubhaskaree-yam, Ganithasaram, Prasnasaram,
Sundarajaprasnam, Chandrachayaganitham,
Anushtanapaddathi, Prasnareethi, etc. ;etc, are only a
few outstanding in the annals "of Kerala's contribution
to astrology.
The system of 'Prasnam' is yet another characteristic
peculiar to Kerala astrology. I am not conniving at the
division 'Shadangas' of which Prasna is one. But the
practice of 'Prasna' as an art as well as science, can only
be seen in Kerala. It is ia this context the great author of
Prasnamarga comes to the scene. He was a Namboodiri
Brahmin belonging to a place, called Edakkad in
North Malabar. This is made clear in his work in the
Mangalacharana itself.

work in Malayalam called Pramakuzhikkadu. This
work Prasnamarga gives the methods of performing
Ashtamangala Prasna, Deva Prasna, Tamboola Prasna,
etc. Recently you must have been acquainted with this.
Thanks to the efforts of Dr. B. V. RAMAN for giving an
English translation of Prasnamarga.
I am told that in North India the method of Jathaka alone
is practised and not Prasna, so that one who has no jathaka
or who does not know his date of birth and time may

relief. Prasna is a unique method in every aspect, a Kerala
product, rooted in Kerala and stems from the value and
culture of Kerala. No date, no time, no nakshatra, no
tithi, nothing about the consultor prichaka is required.
Prasna, you know, is question or puzzle. The moment the
consultor comes and asks, the place where he stands for
asking the questions, the 'nimitham', the astrologer's own
'Swasagathi', 'deepalaksha-nam', etc., are available in any
case and afford to give the Lagna and the predictions.

Predictions in Prasna are fundamentally based on the same
mode of 'Jathaka'. But for a Kerala astrologer not even
the 'grahaehakra' is a a prerequisite. He can calculate the
Lagna as stated before or by rotating the 'Kavidf in deep

mantras and then taking a handful of that and dividing

commence by no less inexorable loyalty to truth. That is
why in predictions Kerala astrologers stand foremost. It is
a formidable task, no doubt. And this power of prediction
by 'Prasna* cannot be easily acquired by anybody. For that
the astrologer must be a true 'Daivajna' for which what is
the mode of life he has to undergo, etc., are the mandates
of Prasnamarga. It is just like a decree for mandatory
injunction that the author gives the directions.
The astrologer has to lead a strict life of a 'Thapaswee'.

learning of original texts of Varahamibira, Prasnamarga,

the next essential indispensable thing. The calculation

the characteristics of astrology in Kerala. Above all, comes
the strict compliance of a sort of 'thapasya' with devotion to

native. Venus is the bosom friend of Saturn and hence he
becomes very powerful in Venusian horoscopes, i.e., in
the horoscopes of Libra and Taurus Lagnas.
According to our scriptures, Saturn is the son of the
Sun. As per their (Saturn and the Sun) qualities and
characteristics, both are diametrically opposed to each

why Saturn is allotted Capricorn and Aquarius, the signs
just opposite to those of the two luminaries.

house is unfavourable rather than his situation. Saturn in
the 12th house casts his aspect over the 6th house, which is
the house of diseases. If the Sun is posited in the 6th house,
the person is surely destined to have a diseased body.

Saturn-gifted people usually have adventures in their lives.

They face sudden changes (good and bad) in life. They
are wise and held in high esteem in society, rich owners
of landed property, dashing and successful in political
affairs. They have to face many obstacles and dangers
through false friends.

Now I am tracing the results of the position of Saturn in

various houses according to canons of Hindu Astrology.
The house position, his ownership and aspects on other
planets and houses and the aspect he receives from other
planets should be studied very minutely.

This planet has a very important role in horoscopy. Hence

the right position, ownership and aspect he receives from
other planets must be studied very carefully.
Saturn is the most important and biggest planet among
celestial bodies in Indian Astrology and it remains in
one sign for 30 months, Saturn rules over Capricorn
and Aquarius, the 10th and the 11th signs of the Zodiac

(i) In the 1st house Saturn makes the native hard-working.

Such persons usually get success after the 36th year of life.
From the 1st house Saturn aspects the 3rd, the 7th and the
10th houses and if these aspects fall on his own or exalted
sign the native becomes more courageous, prominent and
successful in his career, and if on other signs, there is less
success and much struggle in life, disorder in health and
unhappy marriage.

From the 2nd house Saturn aspects the 4th, the 8th and

(iii) In the 3rd house, Saturn becomes powerful and
gives good wealth, travel, happiness from brothers and
personality to the native. The native puts in sincere
labour in his work and gets success. Saturn aspects the
5th, the 9th and the 12th houses from this place The 5th
house aspect gives interest in mechanical lines and some
engineers have Saturn in their 3rd house. Aspect over the
9th house indicates career where travelling is necessary.
Thus powerful Saturn in the 3rd can make the native a
sales engineer. The aspect of Saturn over the 12th house
denotes much more expenditure and fear of secret enemies.

aspects from Jupiter, Venus and if he is powerful then very
good results are achieved by the native. Saturn aspects the

6th indicates obstacles in life and struggle with enemies.
His aspect on the 10th denotes dependence on others till
36th year and aspect over the 1st house or Lagna denotes
blackishness iu face and a sensitive nature.
(v) Saturn in the 5th house gives bad results in aspect
of issues, sons, speculation and education. The native
becomes short-tempered, selfish and mentally weak.
Saturn casts his aspect over the 7th, the 11th and the 2nd

marriage, on the llth house good income after struggle
and on the 2nd house hindrance in accumulation of wealth

From this place the aspect of Saturn falls on the 9th, the

The aspect on the 1st house indicates laborious and hard
work to gain position in life; on the 5th house his aspect

aspect on the 8th house gives long life.

fondness for occult sciences, secret enemies, and

In any horoscope if Saturn is found in the 1st, the 4th, the
7th or the 10th house identical with his own or exaltation
sign, then Sasa Yoga is formed. This is one of the Pancha
Maha Purusha Yogas. The native in whose horoscope
this yoga is found becomes a leader, wealthy, healthy and
powerful politically. His character will be questionable
and he rises to the highest position and achieves all the
comforts in life.
As for conjunctions, I would state here that the Sun-Saturn
conjunction is not good in any horoscope. It denotes
disorder in health and much unrest and struggle in life.

Saturn-Moon conjunction is also bad for the native. It
denotes struggle, a sensitive nature and poverty. Saturn
becomes more powerful when he conjoins his bosom
friends Venus and Mercury.
Saturn-Rahu conjunction is also said to be good and makes
the native fortunate and successful in life. Saturn with
Ketu is not favourable to the native.
Saturn is very powerful in the horoscopes of persons
born in Taurus or Libra Lagnas. - Any body born in these

Yesterday (March 2016 issue of The AeM) we learnt

who can help Rama by dispelling the darkness in his heart

If children refuse to go to school and keep sleeping, or

complaining about food, do not seek work, and do not
accept any responsibility, wont the parent feel concerned?
So much of prelude is given here, instead of simply saying
Rama had doubts and Vasishtha cleared them. Sometimes,
books may appear very small, especially Vedanta books.
Because the publishers do not want people to get deterred
by the size of the book, they print small books to entice
readers to purchase them. Once you open the book, you
see that the print is very small and the margins
are very small. It is the same with some printed
editions of the Bhagavad Gita. Likewise, Sage
Valmiki was not concerned about the size of
the book. He explained the subject in detail.
Rama just then entered his sixteenth year. He
was at the critical teenage juncture. He was
WKHHOGHVWVRQ+HZDVZHOOTXDOLHG+H
was understood to be the future king.
Vedanta never says that one has to
leave home and renounce everything.
We must know the truth. Yoga
Vashishta explains it.
Dasaratha feels very anxious. He
cannot make the situation public. He
cannot openly ask Vashishta. Now the
secret has come out. Vashishta has not
said anything openly. He has been trying
for a while to correct the situation. Rajo
Guna is necessary in a small measure
to even learn Vedanta. Kings have the

to attain Satva Guna. Once it is attained, one should not
fall back into Rajo Guna. What you have attained with
discipline, you must not lose. In the presence of Guru when
you are listening to His words of advice, you must preserve
your Satva Guna. Vashishta wanted to teach Vedanta to
Rama. He needed it. But Vashishta was not convinced
that Rama was quite ready. Some Gurus sometimes send
disciples to approach another guru to learn certain things.
Vashishta perhaps had made his efforts. And yet, Rama
remained in this condition. Does Vashishta not know? He
was simply waiting for the right time. If you cannot give
the proper medicine, then you have to take the patient to

Sometimes a baby deer does not show fear when a

tiger approaches it, out of innocence and ignorance of
impending danger. It will remain still instead of running
away. Surprised at this behavior, sometimes the tiger feels
pity and begins to fondle the deer. The adult deer will try to
teach the baby to be afraid of tigers and lions. The parent
deer will risk its own life to protect the baby deer from an
attacking tiger or lion. Deer generally can smell danger and
will run.
The baby deer remains while the rest of
them run
away. The pack of mature deer come back
to get the
baby, noticing its absence, to take it with
them.
Rama is here compared to a baby deer. The
enlightened entertain no fear. We fear about
the future of the children. Sadguru shows us
the way to get out of such fears.
Rama is not afraid of even losing the kingdom.
The worst that Dasaratha can do to him
is to refuse the kingdom. Rama is not
bothered. Is the Sun rising because
he is receiving a salary? No. If the
Sun does not rise, who suffers? Not
the Sun. We do. We do not realize
the value of the time of sunrise.
European countries know what it is
not to enjoy sunlight for months. We
should at least be awake at the time
of sunrise. Whether or not you have
had your bath by then or not, whether
or not you are sitting in meditation or prayer,
at least be awake before sunrise.
Sage Viswamitra asks Rama to be brought to court and
make sure that he attains the highest state of liberation.
When one has an easy job, where the boss is kind, and

Rama is lost in meditation. He neglects to take a bath. That
is not a fault. But if you eat breakfast without brushing
your teeth, it is a fault. You must follow the rules of
cleanliness and hygiene. Every instant you must pay rent
to God for the use of this body. You must keep praying
for forgiveness every time you fail to follow rules. You
cannot arrogantly claim that the body is yours. Food given

What Truth is, will be known. Rama will be happy

internally and externally. Rama himself had once said, I
speak as if I am cheerful. But in reality I have concerns.
One should not pretend or act crazy. I am going into detail
because I want you to have a proper understanding of
this subject. That is the reason I repeat myself. Each day
the audience here is different. Hence, every day I have to
caution you. Once, the Guru assures you that you are on the
right track, you may proceed with your spiritual practices.
Viswamitra assures Dasaratha that there is a certain heat
in Ramas body due to his anxiety. He will regain his
glow soon and his paleness will vanish with the help of
Vedanta. Rama will realize the purpose of his existence
as well as his duties.
If one is enlightened, and goes away to the Himalayas,
people will adjust to the fact after a short time. But one
should not remain here and act in an inappropriate manner
that troubles everyone.
Viswamitra continues to assure that Rama will lead a
wonderful life, explore into the source of this Creation,
which is illusion, and will ultimately reach the highest
state. He will transcend joy and sorrow. He will have an
objective and broad perspective. He will be free from all
DZVLQSHUVRQDOLW\+HZLOOKDYHHTXDQLPLW\:HVHHWKDW
even in the end he was willing to forgive Ravana if he were
to apologize for his wrongdoing. Rama told Sita bluntly
that as a king it was his duty to save a woman in trouble.
He built the bridge across the ocean. He established
Dharma in Lanka. He changed evil into good by making
Vibhishana the king. Viswamitra had no doubt in his own
wisdom and assured that he would easily cure Rama of
his predicament.
Rama is in a most detached state of mind. Viswamitra is not
concerned about Ramas condition. He fully understands
it. One who knows everything has no fear. Other people
had concluded that Rama is useless now. They were
convinced that he has lost all his capabilities. They speak
of him as if he has fallen from glory. Viswamitra does not
feel so. He knows that Rama is in a state of dispassion
born from discretion. Hence, he is not worried.
Sometimes when God does not satisfy your desire, you

People thought Ramas condition may be a kind of disease.

But actually it is not. This is the awakening of spiritual
knowledge. Prabodha Chandrodaya is a wonderful work
translated in many languages. Please read it. It explains
about spiritual Sadhana and Moha/delusion. It presents all

Ramas dispassion gives enlightenment to the world. That
is what Viswamitra has realized. Dense clouds gather but
the breeze blows them away. The breeze of knowledge
will blow away Ramas doubts. We, not Rama, gain the
fruit. Only a proper understanding will blow the clouds of
delusion away. A scientist who develops detachment, like
a karma yogi, does research to help the world. Viswamitra
rues that dance and entertainment was arranged to get
Rama out of his depressed mood but all those efforts
were in vain.
Blind belief is not encouraged in Vedanta. You must

that state is reached, you feel total rest. Srama is tiredness.
Asrama removes it.
Viswamitra continues that we are all here. What do we
lack? What do we desire from the world that we have not
yet attained? Just as we have found the highest state of
repose, Rama will also obtain it.
Before correcting yourself, do not try to correct others.

consumed Amrita/the nectar of immortality. He will be free
from disease and sorrow. Like deities, he will be free from
decay. Once Truth is experienced, that is the result. We
must always speak the truth. That is the highest austerity,
endorsed even by the Vedas. The purpose of this austerity
is to obtain the highest Truth. Truth has to be directly
experienced. Rama henceforth will be joyful and smiling.
After losing Sita, Rama says, for four months we have to

at peace within. He was not grinning, showing his teeth.

But he was composed. He made plans on how to conduct

warfare when the time comes. This is the result of having
gained knowledge about the highest Truth.
Currently he had just returned from a pilgrimage, where
he keenly observed the ways of the world. Sage Suka
was not taking food or water. He was only sipping water
when someone offered it. It was not as if he was having
a heavy meal in secret, at night. Yet, He was strong and
hefty. That is result of Yoga. Rama has become emaciated
now. Once he acquires knowledge, Rama will regain his
strength and vigor.
Sri Lalita Sahasranama declares that chanting it will grant
good health and vigor.
Viswamitra stated that Rama would regain his radiance
if he were brought here. He will begin practicing all his
SUHVFULEHGGXWLHVZLWKRXWDQ\DZRURPLVVLRQ:HZRUN

wholeheartedly perform his duties, without expecting
any result. Once Rama is fully enlightened, he will have

When the umbrella is removed, the shade goes away. So
once he returns to worldly affairs, will he not fall back into
materialistic ways would be one of the questions that may
arise. No. He will follow dharma strictly. He will have a
composed mind that sees God in everything and everyone.
7KHIDPRXVWKHLQIDPRXVWKHVHOVKWKHXQVHOVKWKH
noble, and the sinful, all exist in the world. The Bhagavad
Gita says that those who are enlightened will look upon
a scholar, a fool, a dog, and one who eats dogs, all as
equal. Is it possible for one to view alike a noble soul and

a criminal? To properly understand this statement, you

have to study the commentaries. The consciousness that
exists in all is the same. The attributes are different as per
the different manifestations. Who should be approached,
and who should be avoided, Rama will know. He will
not treat gold and a piece of wood differently. But he
will know the science of cause and effect. He will know
the secret composition of different substances. At the end
of all exploration of all the truths in the world, it will be
understood by Rama that God alone is the ultimate source
of everything that happens.
When Dasaratha heard this, he felt very happy. Rama was
beckoned a second time and was on his way. He had not
yet arrived.
Rama always addressed his father as king. Only rarely
he treated him as his father. He gives due respect to
royalty and authority. Rama now came to know who
were all present at the court. Sage Vashishta and Sage
9LVZDPLWUDZHUHSUHVHQW5DPDIHOWFRQGHQWWKDWQRZKH
could express his doubts clearly and openly and receive
proper answers.
It is not good to discuss personal problems with outsiders.
Rama was not sharing his woes with others. It is not wise.
It is likely to cause harm.
Finally Rama was spotted at a distance. He appeared very
calm and composed. The guard fetched Rama. Rama came
greeting those whom he saw on the way. He arrived at the
assembly. We will continue tomorrow.

Timings for
Rahukala, Gulikakala and Yamakantaka
12 hours of the day and 12 hours of
the night are divided into 8 sections
each having duration of 90 minutes
or 1 hours each. The seven
Upagrahas kaala, paridhi, dhooma,
ardhaprahara, yamakantaka,
indrachaapa and Maandi take
over by turns their ruler-ship of the
seven sections, each day, leaving
one to Rahu. The period ruled by
Rahu is called Raahukala which is
generally considered inauspicious.
The timings of the ruler-ship of
Raahukala for the seven weekdays
are furnished in the table below.
The timings given are for days
when the sunrise is 06.00 AM and
sunset 06.00 PM. For calculating
the exact duration of the period
of Raahukalam, on any day, the
duration of the daytime must be
DVFHUWDLQHGUVWDQGWKDWKDVWREH
divided by 8. The result arrived

Weekday

will denote the duration of the

each of the 8 sections for the day.
For example take a Sunday having
the sunrise at 06.20 AM and
sunset at 05.40 PM. The duration
of the daytime will then be only
11h.20m.., or 680minutes. Divided
by 8 the sectional value will
be only 85 minutes. Raahukala
generally for Sunday is from 16.30
to 18 hrs. In this case Raahukala
must therefore be only for 85
minutes. It would commence 85
minutes before the actual unset
of the day namely, 05.40 AM.
Therefore the Raahukala for the
day will be from 16h.15m, to
17h.40m. It has to be worked out
accordingly for the periods of other
Upagrahas also. Gulikakala is
considered auspicious. Regarding
Ya m a k a n t a k a , p o p u l a r l y
considered inauspicious, opinions
however, differ.
