Battle of White Plains 1776

A Study of the Strategy and Tactics used during

the Campaign
Thesis:

The Battle of White Plains took place in the village of White Plains, New York on October,
28, 1776. Following the retreat of General George Washingtons Continental forces from the city of
New York, General William Howe landed his Crown forces in the county of Westchester with the
intentions of cutting of Washington's escape route. Washington was privy to this information and
established a defensive position in the village of White Plains where the Continental Army had a
small supply depot. Needless to say, Washington would fail to capitalize on holding the high ground.
Nevertheless, Washington would abandon his position and begin his epic retreat into New Jersey. In
terms of General Howe, he did not pursue Washingtons forces thereby allow his to fight another day.
Along with the engagement that took place at the Battle of White Plains, the tactics utilized by both
sides will be explored to further enhance the understanding of the operational failures and success
of both armies.
